• Store XML data in Core Data

  Hi, is there any easy way of store XML data into core data? Currently, my app just pulls the values from the XML file directly, however, this isn't efficient for XML files which holds over 100 entries, thus storing the data in Core Data would be the best option. XML file is called/downloaded/parsed ever time the app opens. With the Core Data, the XML data would be downloaded ever 3600 seconds or so, and refresh the current data in the core data, to reduce the loading time when opening the app. Any ideas on how I can do this? Having reviewed the developer documentation, it doesn't look very tasty.

• Synchronize Data between a Silverlight ListBox and a User Control

  One of the great things about XAML is the powerful data-binding capabilities. If you load up a list box with a collection of objects, you can display detail data about each object without writing any C# or VB.NET code. Take a look at Figure 1 that shows a collection of Product objects in a list box. When you click on a list box you bind the current Product object selected in the list box to a set of controls in a user control with just a very simple Binding statement in XAML.  Figure 1: Synchronizing a ListBox to a User Control is easy with Data Binding Product and Products Classes To illustrate this data binding feature I am going to just create some local data instead of using a WCF service. The code below shows a Product class that has three properties, namely, ProductId, ProductName and Price. This class also has a constructor that takes 3 parameters and allows us to set the 3 properties in an instance of our Product class. This is very basic XAML that just creates a text block and a text box control for each of the three properties in the Product class. I added this namespace and assigned it a namespace prefix of “src” as shown in the line below: xmlns:src="clr-namespace:SL_SyncListBoxAndUserControl_CS" Next, to use the data from an instance of the Products collection, you create a UserControl.Resources section in the XAML and add a tag that creates an instance of the Products class and assigns it a key of “productCollection”.   <UserControl.Resources>    <src:Products x:Key="productCollection" />  </UserControl.Resources> Next, you bind the list box to this productCollection object using the ItemsSource property. You bind the ItemsSource of the list box to the static resource named productCollection. In the XAML below I used the ProductName property. <ListBox x:Name="lstData"         ItemsSource="{Binding             Source={StaticResource productCollection}}"         DisplayMemberPath="ProductName" /> You now need to create an instance of the ucProduct user contol below the list box. You do this by once again referencing the “src” namespace and typing in the name of the user control. You then set the DataContext property on this user control to a binding. The binding uses the ElementName attribute to bind to the list box name, in this case “lstData”. The Path of the data is SelectedItem. These two attributes together tell Silverlight to bind the DataContext to the selected item of the list box. That selected item is a Product object. So, once this is bound, the bindings on each text box in the user control are updated and display the current product information. <src:ucProduct x:Name="prodDetail"               DataContext="{Binding ElementName=lstData,                                      Path=SelectedItem}" /> Summary Once you understand the basics of data binding in XAML, you eliminate a lot code that is otherwise needed to move data into controls and out of controls back into an object. Connecting two controls together is easy by just binding using the ElementName and Path properties of the Binding markup extension. Another good tip out of this blog is use user controls and set the DataContext of the user control to have all of the data on the user control update through the bindings.   I have written a Python module, and I have two versions: a pure Python implementation and a C extension. I've written the __init__.py file so that it tries to import the C extension, and if that fails, it imports the pure Python code (is that reasonable?). Now, I'd like to know what is the best way to distribute this module (e.g. write setup.py) so it can be easily used by people with or without the facility to build, or use, the C extension, just by running: python setup.py install My experience is limited, but I see two possible cases: User does not have MS Visual Studio, or the GCC compiler suite, installed on their machine, to build the C extension User is running IronPython, Jython, or anything other than CPython. I only have used CPython. So I'm not sure how I could distribute this module so that it would work smoothly and be easy to install on those platforms, if they're unable to use the C extension.

• WPF MenuItem ViewModel Command

  Hi, I am fairly new to WPF and am struggling a little with a scenario. I have a menu which has menu items. When one of these menu items gets clicked a method needs to be called that will do something based upon the text displayed associated with that menu item. So for example, the menu item's content was "test" so I would need to do something with "test". FYI, this "something" directly affects a collection on the ViewModel. This is easy to achieve using the click event and no ViewModel, but I was trying to implement MVVM using an explicit ViewModel. So I started to look into Commands but cannot see how I would pass anything from the View back into the Command in the ViewModel. Any suggestions on what I should be doing here? Thanks

• Stack overflow in xp cmd console

  I am using an older program whose source code I cannot see. I am using the cmd.exe console in windows xp. The program ran with no problems on an xp machine last year, while a stack overflow code 2000 error was observed on a different xp machine (easy fix - use the machine that works). I tried running the program on the previously working machine lately, and now am getting the same error. No changes to the os were made and I did not change the service pack version. Any ideas on how to get around this stack overflow error so I can use the program? Dosbox will at least open the program, however it does not run to completion. Thanks!

• Adding video and flash functionality to the Ajax Control Toolkit HTMLEditor

  Greetings, I'm looking for a way to extend the functionality of the HTMLEditor control that the Ajax Control Toolkit supplies for ASP.net. I would like to add video and flash functionality to the editor (buttons, allowed tags, etc). To my knowledge, this is rather easy: plop in an tag with the correct parameters and it just works; I have videos running in the preview window of the editor. Unfortunately, the tag is stripped away when saving the HTML-code and updating it in the database. Hence, I would like to ask if there is any way of adding this functionality apart from manually adding the changes in the source control repository of the Ajax Control Toolkit and recompiling it. If this is not possible, but can offer some help concerning the implementation of this in the source code, it would also be much appreciated. Thank you for your time :)

  I use echo in Upstart scripts to log things: script echo "main: some data" >> log end script post-start script echo "post-start: another data" >> log end script Now these two run in parallel, so in the logs I often see: main: post-start: some data another data This is not critical, so I won't employ proper synching, but thought I'd turn auto flush ON to at least reduce this effect. Is there an easy way to do that? Update: yes, flushing will not properly fix it, but I've seen it help such situations to some degree, and this is all I need in this case. It's just that I don't know how to do it in Shell

• Loading WPF satellite resources dynamically

  Hello! I've read about satellite-assemblies being used in WPF localizations. However, I would like to ask if there is a way to load the satellite-assemblies without following the pre-defined directory structure that depends on the language (ex. If the system language is English, the WPF application looks for the satellite-assembly inside the "en-US" subfolder). This is because I would like to simply swap the satellite-assemblies when distributing the software package without having to create a specific folder per language that would hold the assemblies. I would just like to have the satellite-assembly and the main executable in the same directory. Is this possible and is there even an easy way to do this like simply loading the resource file on application startup once? Thanks!

• Working out global tab order algorithmically?

  We have a proprietry system where we can configure fields on indiviual forms. However these fields have a global tab order (we cannot specify for a specific form). We have a bunch of forms (35 in total) which share a lot of different fields. Each form has a specific tab/edit order that needs to be configured. Example: Form 1 has fields A,B,C,D in that order. Form 2 has fields E,F,G,A in that order. Form 3 has fields E,B,H,I in that order. The global tab orders would be E,F,G,A,B,C,D,H,I Notice how A needs to come before B yet after G. Is there any easy way to work this out using the tab order lists for each form? I need to merge this tab order information into a single global tab order list. I have over 200 fields in total and it is near impossible to do by hand.

• Dictionary returning a default value if the key does not exist

  I find myself using the current pattern quite often in my code nowadays var dictionary = new Dictionary<type, IList<othertype>>(); // Add stuff to dictionary var somethingElse = dictionary.ContainsKey(key) ? dictionary[key] : new List<othertype>(); // Do work with the somethingelse variable Or sometimes var dictionary = new Dictionary<type, IList<othertype>>(); // Add stuff to dictionary IList<othertype> somethingElse; if(!dictionary.TryGetValue(key, out somethingElse) { somethingElse = new List<othertype>(); } Both of these ways feel quite roundabout. What I really would like is something like dictionary.GetValueOrDefault(key) Now, I could write an extension method for the dictionary class that does this for me, but I figured that I might be missing something that already exists. SO, is there a way to do this in a way that is more "easy on the eyes" without writing an extension method to dictionary?

• Tree View WIKI replacement solution for SharePoint like Confluence?

  Hi to all, I keep my Process Documents on SVN and I want to create a Wiki page includes the information about these files. We use SharePoint in the company for basic document sharing and team sites. As it is mentioned in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/256407/what-are-your-biggest-complaints-about-sharepoint SharePoint Wiki lacks of usability. I need an easy to use wiki tool which is capable of showing the content like WikiPedia contents and it would be great if I could have the SharePoint tree view and Active Directory authentication also. I googled it and found Atlassian's Confluence and it seems that this product is capable of the requirements. We use Jira for issue tracking, so we can use it's reporting in dashboards. I need and it has a Wiki part which displays wiki pages in tree view. It should be like Does anyone used Confluence or have an idea for other products which meets my requirements

• Accessing one process's memory contents from another module

  I am developing a virtual device driver such that the user can write to the driver a process' pid and a virtual address, and the module will use these two values to get the memory contents of the target process. I am wondering if there is any easy functions that can fetch user page's data at this virtual address. I have tried get_user but this is not possible because the modules executing get_user at another process's context. I also tried to use ptrace_readdata, however, it seems that the file at /kernel/ptrace.c leaves a function access_process_vm undefined and also I don't know how to compile the source code of my module with this file (the linker seaches file in /linux/include by default). I am wondering if there are any other solutions...

• Dual booting on separate hard drives

  I have windows XP professional installed on 1 hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 on my second hard drive. On start up the computer completely skips the grub menu and boots straight into 10.10. I have tried running os-prober with the windows hard drive mounted and then updating grub but it didnt work. Any ideas? I have changed the boot order so that the HDD with xp on it is first however the computer still booted into linux. I tried running grub-install /dev/sda and got this /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 32 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. Please ask its authors not to store data in the boot track.. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 33 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. No error reported I checked using disk utility and the code for my xp hard drive is sdb so i ran the camand grub-install /dev/sdb shich gave me this Installation finished. No error reported. So i rebooted but it still didnt work. Any other ideas? • Load balancing a console application or service

  So it's easy to load balance an ASP.NET web application. You set up a load balancer between two servers, and if the web server isn't responding on Port 80, it won't receive requests. Are there any proven techniques for doing this for a C# console application or Windows service that takes actions of its own volition? Are there any frameworks for knowing if peer processes are alive or dead, doing heartbeats, etc? I've been experimenting a bit with NServiceBus and it seems like, for certain kinds of applications, it would help to have most of the work done as a response to an event, which makes it more like a web application, actually, and therefore easier to scale and load balance with multiple processes, but I feel like that's a half-baked solution since in most cases there usually needs to be some concept of a "master" process that's responsible for getting work started.

• ClickOnce and mageUI adding custom file folder problems

  What I do: Publishing .Net 3.5 application via VS, or msbuild (whatever), and now I need to insert to the published application separate directory (Modules - not added as a reference to the project - our project architecture does not allow this). So I'm copying the folder to published location then runs mageUI.exe select the application manifest and then the problems starts. As I press the populate button it's adding also hidden directory? So I remove the directory, after I want to save the manifest file I get the "Warning MSB3110: Assembly 'NAME.Shell.application.deploy' has mismatched identity 'NAME.Shell.application', expected file name: 'NAME.Shell.application.application'". Did you have the same problems, according to http://smartclient.codeplex.com/Project/Download/FileDownload.aspx?DownloadId=5060 it should be easy as 1-2-3 but it's not.

• Method to capture a screenshot of user's browser to aid in bug reporting

  I'm looking for a way to make it easy for technically unsophisticated users to submit screenshots of their browser to me, to aid in debugging web application problems. There will be a button on all pages inside a web application they can use to report problems, which I would like to submit a screenshot (among other things). http://www.snapabug.com/ is very close to what I want, but I need to be able to customize a few things that service won't let me. Production environment is LAMP. I expect there must be something Flash-based that can do this, but I've not been able to find something. Thanks!

  In the query the top part is getting all the years that will run in the stored procedure. • Get IFrame parent url or referrer using javascript or php

  I am creating a widget that would load in a IFrame and users will be able to place the widget on their own website. How would I get the URL of the website that is using the IFrame in javascript and/or PHP? The IFrame loads a php file. I have tried "parent.top.location.href" and "parent.document.referrer" in the IFrame page but that is undefined. I have also tried to echo "$_Server[referrer]" in the IFrame page and that did return the IFrame parent URL, but how easy is it for someone to manipulate the referrer variable? I dont want to get misleading information.
