• Why can't I view a specific websites?

  I am a netwrok administrator at a small company (22 PC) and i have a problem, and i don't know which could be the cause. I can't access a specific website from the LAN. I have a server which has 2 NICs(one to ISP and one to LAN). I have installed on the server (Bind DNS server and DHCP server) Debian 6 Server. I want to mention that "nslookup mcel.co.mz", and "dig my_site" is not working perfectly, I can't access the site from inside the LAN. I can't send emails to person that are located in that domain. When I dig mcel.co.mz @8.8.8.8 the domain is resolved. Why can't I view a specific websites? www.mcel.co.mz Why can't send email to person that are on some domains? @mcel.co.mz I don't have any rule configured in Debian Server which wouldn't let me acces the site. I am the only one responsable with the IT department. Lowly,

• Database for Ubuntu

  I am trying Ubuntu 12.04 booted from a DVD disk before I install it. I currently havwe windows 8 (which I hate) and I have a couple of Data base programs with my movies, hundreds of movies, in them. Is there a database available for Ubuntu that is compatible with Microsoft Database? There are too much data in the current database file for me to have to rewrite the program. So far, I love the Ubuntu 12.04. I have been able to access my microsoft works spreadsheet files and documents with no problem. And I like the thuderbird email and just about everything else about Ubuntu 12.04. I just need to be able to access my database files and to write lables and envelopes. Thanks. Toby J Paris, TN

• Feedback/bug tracking system for an alpha/beta phase website? [on hold]

  I'm developing a website and it's closing onto a private alpha/beta phase. It will be exposed to a small selected group of individuals who will provide a fair amount of feedback. What options do I have for this feedback system? I would certainly like to make it collaborative (excluding email). I could mock up a really simple message board, but would rather use my time elsewhere. The feedback will mainly consist of feature suggestions and bug reports. Edit: Actually, would prefer if it's a free hosted service.

• How do I get Ubuntu One on Win7 to authenticate my login?

  I just got a new computer running Windows 7 home premium, I used to have Ubuntu One working great on my Ubuntu desktop, but now, running win7, I know my login email address and password is correct, but it still says 'Authentication failed'. Googling the problem, looks like it may be because a device was removed from my list of devices, but the only device listed is my previous Ubuntu workstation, and nothing has been removed. I also checked the windows firewall and Ubuntu One is allowed on all interfaces on incoming and outgoing, and still authentication fails. Web login to my Ubuntu One account works fine.

• USB Mouse stutters periodically

  I'm using an HP dv6000 (not sure of exact model) with a pretty basic Logitech wireless laptop mouse. From time to time, the USB mouse will be very stuttery and less responsive. Not all clicks register and the motion is not smooth. It seems like it's related to the notify-osd coming up when I get an IM or Email or whatever else, but it happens other times as well. It's not the whole computer becoming less responsive, because if I use the touch pad during one of these fits, it works perfectly smooth. I've replaced the batteries in the mouse and have tried different USB ports with better line of sight, etc. I can't figure out what's going on. Any thoughts?

• Can I set Ubuntu 12.10 to automatically reboot to Windows once only?

  Is there some way when I'm in Ubuntu 12.10 that I can set it to reboot automatically to Windows just once, so that when I'm in Windows I can reboot and it will automatically boot back into Ubuntu? I need this because often when I travel I access my home computer for email and other personal info that I don't want to travel with or leave to the tender mercies of the "cloud". On rare occasions, I need to temporarily boot into Windows 7 to do something Windows-specific, but then I want to be able to boot back into Ubuntu because that's where most of my computing takes place. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Bill

Now I'm getting people who haven't made any attempt to learn the code, email me their code, and expect me to trace it through for them. I'm sure anyone with a half-popular blog gets similar requests. What's the best way to deal with this scenario? I want to put together a boilerplate response including these points: How far have you gone with this on your own?   I'm looking for some small programming projects that I can give potential employees to gauge their programming abilities. These will be programmers straight out of college. I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. One example would be to take this paragraph of text and return a list of alphabetized unique words. After each word tell me how many times the word appeared and in what sentance(s) the word appreared in. Anyone have any good suggestions?

• IP fail-over address. Do i need it?

  I received an email from my web hosting provider where i have 2 dedicated servers saying that from now on I have to pay for my IP fail-over addresses. The server we have hosts a tool used internally by our company. Traffic to it is quite low. No more than 3 people will use it at the same time. If something happens we can wait a day to have the tool up and running again. Is it worth having these fail-over addresses? thanks

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04.1 and run Gnome Shell. I am consistently getting a pop up window prompting me for my Gmail address book authentication. The window pops up the moment I type something into gnome shell after hitting the super key. I'm assuming that Ubuntu wants to search my address book for people to include in the search. I have opened up the settings and deleted my account from the online accounts section and rebooted, nothing seems to stop the popup. Where is it getting my email address from? Most importantly, how to I stop this super annoying popup from appearing?

• Skype webcam won't work

  I am a very new Ubuntu 12.04 user and would like to install Skype. It used to be available from Ubuntu Software Centre but it is no longer available from there. So I downloaded it and installed same. The Ubuntu SC Installed section does not list it But Ubuntu Tweak does. Skype works for sound only but no webcam = Logitec QuickCam Express 046d:0928. Could you please help to make it work. According what I read it should work out of the box BUT it does not. Your advise/help by email to [email protected] would be most appreciated. • Help! Requesting a change of URL on Yahoo Directory!

  I submitted a couple websites on yahoo directory a month ago. For some reason, the url they listed was not the url I asked for, they listed the Japanese version instead of the submitted English version (this is a English directory so obviously it is a mistake). I requested changes and was accepted. But the reality is they promised a change but it was never really done. I contacted them again and again through the 'request a change in URL' form, but there is no answer. Is there any effective way that I can get to them? preferably a phone number or email?   At Pass Summit 2011 a new project was announced. It’s a Microsoft SQL Azure Lab and its codename is Microsoft “Data Explorer”. According to the official blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dataexplorer/), this new tool provides an innovative way to acquire new knowledge from the data that interest you. In a nutshell, Data Explorer allows you to combine data from multiple sources, to publish and share the result. In addition, you can generate data streams in the RESTful open format (Open Data Protocol), and they can then be used by other applications. Nonetheless we can still use Excel or PowerPivot to analyze the results. Sources can be varied: Excel spreadsheets, text files, databases, Windows Azure Marketplace, etc.. For those who are not familiar with this resource, I strongly suggest you to keep an eye on the data services available to the Marketplace: https://datamarket.azure.com/browse/Data To tell the truth, as I read the above blog post, I was tempted to think of the Data Explorer as a "SSIS on Azure" addressed to the Power User. In fact, reading the response from Tim Mallalieu (Group Program Manager of Data Explorer) to the comment made to his post, I had a positive response to my first impression: “…we originally thinking of ourselves as Self-Service ETL. As we talked to more folks and started partnering with other teams we realized that would be an area that we can add value but that there were more opportunities emerging.” The typical operations of the ETL phase ( processing and organization of data in different formats) can be obtained thanks to Data Explorer Mashup. This is an image of the tool: The flexibility in the manipulation of information is given by Data Explorer Formula Language. This is a formula-based Excel-style specific language: Anyone wishing to know more can check the project page in addition to aforementioned blog: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlazurelabs/labs/dataexplorer.aspx In light of this new project, there is no doubt about the intention of Microsoft to get closer and closer to the Power User, providing him flexible and very easy to use tools for data analysis. But this would inevitably lead to anarchical data management... What do you think about that?

  The three-step JCP evolution consists of the following JSRs: • JSR 348, JCP transparency • JSR 355, Merging the two existing Executive Committees • JSR 358, complex issues moved postponed from JSR 348 The JSR 348 is already completed and JSR 355 is scheduled to be complete later this year. JSR 358 was recently filed and plans to revise several items such as modify the JSPA, Process Document, and a large number of complex issues. Because of the nature and scope of work, the Expert Group consists of representatives from all companies in the Executive Committee. Following the process set by JSR 348, all the work is done in open at jsr358.java.net. All the email discussions are here and JIRA here. Read Patrick Curran's blog for more details as well. The JSR review ballot ends on Jul 9th however the work has already happening for the past few months. Now is your chance to contribute and make JCP more effective!
