• Learning to program on punchcards

  I'd like to try programming with punch cards once in my life. How can I do this? I'm in my 30s, and grew up entirely in the PC era, programming on computers with screens and keyboards. I want to experience the way my father and grandfather used to work. I imagine the hardware (and probably the cards themselves) are no longer manufactured. Are there any universities or museums with functioning punch card readers anymore? I'm in Boston, but I'm willing to travel to do this. I asked MetaFilter, and I got some mixed answers (along with a lot of "no, don't do this" nay-saying). I did get a pointer to the Retro-Computing Society Of Rhode Island, but I haven't received a response to my email to them yet.

• C# calendar needs BL for real-time reminders?

  The calendar is done and now we are wanting to add email, SMS and voice-call reminders. We are using jQuery, C#, .Net & SQL Server 08. No restrictions on our options. I know how to add the API calls and services to initiate these reminders. I am asking for advise about how to approach a reliable timely listener service that knows to call the service or API for the reminder before an appointment. EG. SMS: "You have a conference call in 30 minutes."

• How to access UbuntOne when it asks for default keyring which has never been set?

  I am trying to set up UbuntuOne on a new computer and after I enter the email and password, it asks for the keyring 'default'. I don't know what it is and I never set it. Makes it difficult to enter so it seems to be a counterproductive security default. I understand that if autologin is set the keyring is called. I tried setting the main user to need a password but if I reboot it doesn't ask for the password so it sort of autoboots still. So How do I set the keyring default password? If I can't set it I can't install UbuntOne

  I am running wordpress with woocommerce and theme_my_login plugins. When a user registers on my site it sends them a confirmation email and then they can click to activate account. Problem is when the user goes to login they get an error of incorrect password. If the user uses the forgot password link and resets the password then they can login without any errors. What might cause this problem? Is the password being encrypted with the wrong method?   I am thinking of going directly to companies and then giving them resume directly rather than by email. I know 60% of comapnies don't like it but there is still 40% of getting into something. My few friends have landed the jobs this way. I just want to know that when i reach the company , should i ask the receptionist for manager and talk directly to manager or first i should talk to receptionsist and tell her what i want. May be receptionist won't call the manager if she knew my intenstion. how should i proceed. Please help. I am thinking even if i can get some free internship for 2-3 months even that will be good. so that i can get my foot in. Is that ok to ask for internship or company may have problem with that

• Wordpress login area for downloads

  I need to create a page that requires users to log in with a username / email and password to access it, and then depending on who the user is, they get links to one more files they can download. No need for a 'register' page - users will be added on the back-end. Can anyone recommend the best approach for this? Are there good plugins to handle this kind of thing? Thanks in advance for any guidance. It's Wordpress 3.8.1 by the way.

• Servlet 3.1 Early Draft Now Available

  JSR 340 has released an Early Draft of the Servlet 3.1 specification. Other than the usual clarifications and javadoc updates, ProtocolHandler and WebConnection are new classes that encapsulates the protocol upgrade processing. This will typically be used for upgrading an HTTP connection to a WebSocket. Section 2.3.3.5 in the specification provide more details on it. Section 3.7 explain non-blocking request processing by the Web container. ReadListener and WriteListener are new interfaces that represents a call-back mechanism to read and write data without blocking. As with other Java EE 7 specifications, progress can be tracked at servlet-spec.java.net. The Expert Group discussions are archived and you can participate by sending an email to [email protected].

  I want to integrate my Google contacts, calender and Gmail to Unity. And I don´t want to use Thunderbird or even worse Evolution. Is there a possibility like in GNOME 3.xx? A lightweight contact / calendar / mail app (maybe one app for contact, one for calendar) would be welcome. Edit: I want to use the calender to sync my appointments with google - e.g. I open my "ubuntu-calender", make a new appointment and it syncs with google calendar. Also return way. The same with contacts. I want a see and edit all my contacts in an app and have them sync with google. Where people were looking for a specific command or set of steps to fix a problem they had encountered. So we thought it would be a good idea to create a series of small posts that deal with these "How do I" question directly. We will use a simple example each time, that shows exactly what commands and procedures should be used to address a given problem. • Good interview programming projects

  I'm looking for some small programming projects that I can give potential employees to gauge their programming abilities. These will be programmers straight out of college. I'm looking for projects that would take someone a couple of hours and they would email back their answers post-interview. One example would be to take this paragraph of text and return a list of alphabetized unique words. After each word tell me how many times the word appeared and in what sentance(s) the word appreared in. Anyone have any good suggestions?

• Password Authentication Problems

  I am new to Ubuntu, am extremely delighted with the performance and speed, as compared to Windows 7-However, I messed up, I think...when I booted my USB disc, I set a password, as directed, and when Ubuntu booted up I tried to reset my password via User Accounts to "None". Now, the Password Authentication window prevents me from downloading software, (Audacity and my Ubuntu updates. Also, I've tried to boot into GRUB and the Recovery Console, as directed; however, the PC bypasses GRUB and boots into Ubuntu instead. Also, when attempting to use the terminal as directed to change the password, I'm given a password prompt there also. If the problem is on my end, could you email/reset my password? My PC is an emachines EL1358G. I am otherwise happy with Ubuntu!

  Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long. A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.   How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?

• Created Custom Report in Google Analytics, Primary Account Doesn't See It?

  A client shared access with me to their Google Analytics account. I created a custom report which shows up under Custom Reporting for me. I assumed they would also see this report since it was in their account but they sent me a screen shot showing there's no custom report listed. I have already sent them the shortcut link to the custom report configuration. This seems to be the way to share custom reports along with dashboards in GA now. Do custom reports only appear to the accounts (email) that created them? I would think everyone who had access to the account would see the custom report.
