• Getting websites to detect our mobile browser

  I've been asked to find out a sensible way to make the majority of popular websites detect our browser - which is functionally complete, but is running on rather constrained hardware - as a "mobile" browser. The idea is that the heaviest popular websites seem to have mobile versions, which render much faster and fit better on the screen. I've looked at the inverse question, which tells me that there isn't an obvious standard way of doing it - http://www.brainhandles.com/techno-thoughts/detecting-mobile-browsers is a case in point. This is borne out by looking at a variety of User-Agent strings from popular mobile and desktop browsers. So far the best idea we can come up with is to add "Mobile" to the string somewhere, since this is the main visible difference between Safari for iPad/iPhone and for Windows/Mac. Does anyone have a better idea?

• Inaccurate Logarithm in Python

  I work daily with Python 2.4 at my company. I used the versatile logarithm function 'log' from the standard math library, and when I entered log(2**31, 2) it returned 31.000000000000004, which struck me as a bit odd. I did the same thing with other powers of 2, and it worked perfectly. I ran 'log10(2**31) / log10(2)' and I got a round 31.0 I tried running the same original function in Python 3.0.1, assuming that it was fixed in a more advanced version. Why does this happen? Is it possible that there are some inaccuracies in mathematical functions in Python?

• Verify mail server connection programmatically

  I'm using custom SMTP servers and would like to verify the connection when user enters his own server credentials. Exactly the same type of check as Adobe CF and Railo allow to do when adding mail server. Sure, this does not guarantee that delivery will be working, but at least to check that entered server/username/pass are valid. I can see one tricky way: try to send the email with cfmail and check the mail log. But I believe that it can be done with more elegant. Is there any Java library available with standard ACF/Railo distro to help me? How would I use them? Examples are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  I know there are already many questions like mine but I found no answer which works in Java. So I write a new question. I have text files with content like this: key1 = "This is a \"test\" text with escapes using '\\' characters"; key2 = 'It must work with \'single\' quotes and "double" quotes'; I need a regular expression which matches the values in the double-quotes (or single-quotes). This regular expression must support the escaped quotes and escaped backslashes. The regular expression must work with Java standard Pattern/Matcher classes.

• Wrapping with Dependency Properties

  I've got a Windows Forms control that I'm wrapping with a WindowsFormsHost-derived class to access WPF's data binding functionality. The Forms control exposes properties that indicate its state, along with the standard property-changed event notifier. For example, a Zoom property on the Forms control is accompanied with a ZoomChanged event. In the WindowsFormsHost wrapper, I'm using a DependencyProperty to represent the underlying Windows Forms control property. Binding works as expected going to the control; however, I'm not sure how to correctly propogate property changes from the wrapped control back out to binding subscribers (i.e., the Windows Form control changes its Zoom property and raises the ZoomChanged event). Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Should I be using a different approach?

  I have a business plan & money to hire a developer - the essentials involve simple online games for children (played via traditional computer over the internet) such that their scores are uploaded to a database that can be viewed via a nice portal. What I don't know is: what technologies I would want my developer to know (the only somewhat unusual requirement I have is that the games have relatively accurate timing of keypresses/mouse presses) how much I should expect to pay (in general, what is the appropriate range) how many hours a program of the complexity of a simple tower defense -type game should take to develop (to be clear, the idea is not to implement TD, but rather other games of similar complexity) whether I should go with capable acquaintances, some online kind of online web-dev bidding site, or just try to find a capable undergraduate at the local university who I can wow with his/her first big paycheck, how I should communicate the software's specifications to my hired developer...   Hello I have an object that has a lot of attributes, each one with it's getter and setter. Each attribute has a non primitive type, that I don't know at runtime. For example, what I have is this: public class a{ private typeA attr1; private typeB attr2; public typeA getAttr1(){ return attr1; } public typeB getAttr2(){ return attr2; } public void setAttr1(typeA at){ attr1 = at; } public void setAttr2(typeB at){ attr2 = at; } } public class typeA{ public typeA(){ // doesn't matter } } public class typeB{ public typeB(){ // doesn't matter } } So, using reflection, I obtained the setter method for an attribute. Setting a value in the standard way is something like this: a test = new a(); a.setAttr1(new typeA()); But how can I do this using reflection? I already got the setAttr1() method using reflection, but I don't know how to create a new typeA object to be inserted in the setter.

• How to maintain tabs when pasting in Vim

  I use the tab key to indent my python code in Vim, but whenever I copy and paste a block Vim replaces every tab with 4 spaces, which raises an IndentationError I tried setting :set paste as suggested in related questions but it makes no difference Other sites suggest pasting 'tabless' code and using the visual editor to re-indent, but this is asking for trouble when it comes to large blocks Are there any settings I can apply to vim to maintain tabs on copy/paste? • Allow native DLL to output stdout / stderr in c# console application

  I have a native DLL which outputs via stdout / stderr. I have a C# console application which calls this DLL and outputs binary data to a parent C# application which started the C# console exe, processing stdout / stderr. Currently when I call the C# exe it works just fine (the DLL hooks up to the stdout of my console application and puts its data in just fine). Is this by design (and shouldn't be broken in future .NET framework versions)? Are there limitations on my managed code's deployment with this strategy (full-trust, permission requirements, GAC issues, etc)? I can't seem to find any documentation about stdout with a managed exe and an unmanaged dll both putting data in that standard output on MSDN. Thanks,

  Hello everyone, I am just switching from Ant to Maven and am trying to figure out the best practice to set up a EAR file based Enterprise project? Lets say I want to create a pretty standard project with a jar file for the EJBs, a WAR file for the Web tier and the encapsulating EAR file, with the corresponding deployment descriptors. How would I go about it? Create the project with archetypeArtifactId=maven-archetype-webapp liek a war file and extend from there? What is the best project structure (and POM file example) for this? • How to shrink-to-fit an std::vector in a memory-efficient way?

  I would like to 'shrink-to-fit' an std::vector, to reduce its capacity to its exact size, so that additional memory is freed. The standard trick seems to be the one described here: template< typename T, class Allocator > void shrink_capacity(std::vector<T,Allocator>& v) { std::vector<T,Allocator>(v.begin(),v.end()).swap(v); } The whole point of shrink-to-fit is to save memory, but doesn't this method first create a deep copy and then swaps the instances? So at some point -- when the copy is constructed -- the memory usage is doubled? If that is the case, is there a more memory-friendly method of shrink-to-fit? (In my case the vector is really big and I cannot afford to have both the original plus a copy of it in memory at any time.)

I'm intending to use Git for CVS, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around CVS in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards.   I am trying to set up error handling for a MS-Access application. The standard method to do this seems to be with an On Error statement in each subroutine/function. It seems simpler to me to use the Form_Error function to catch all the runtime errors in that form as opposed to an On Error statement for each sub/function called by an event on that form. (Obviously, for code in modules, there is no Form_Error function and therefore the only method is the On Error statement) What are the pros and cons of using On Error vs Form_Error?

• Development deployment: how to achive edit-and-reload with JSP pages?

  Out project uses WebLogic as web-server and uses mostly JSP for user interface. With standard setup it is possible to copy edited JSP files into the exploded deployment directory and WebLogic will automatically pick them up, recompile and serve new content through HTTP. However, is it possible to avoid copying at all, so that I just save a file in my editor and it is immediately (well, after a couple of seconds for recompilation) visible? The project uses Apache Ant as building tool. I would imagine what I want would be possible with symlinks (since this is for deployment only I don't care about cross-platformity), but then I don't see how it is possible to symlink lots of files at once with Ant. So, how do I achieve save-JSP-hit-F5-in-browser functionality either with some setting in WebLogic; or with symlinking JSPs using Apache Ant (instead of copying them as is done now); or something else completely?

Any help will be appreciated.

  I am trying to program a very standard JS behavior for a link using an HREF onClick handler, and I am facing a strange problem caused by what I believe to be focus/touch mode behavior on Android. Sometimes when I click on the link, instead of executing the action, it simply becomes selected/focused, with either just a focus rectangle or even also with a filled focus rectangle (selected as opposed to just focused?). • A way to avoid deriving from the provider classes in mvc authentication

  Looking for the best practice for authentication in MVC I unfortunately didn't find the clear answer to my question. Thinking of the problem I tried to imagine some priciples that could be useful in my design. Well, I would like to use a base AccountController class I want to place all the tables such as "Users", Roles, Rights etc into my own database. But I wouldn't like to implement the standard aspnetdb design (which can be easy got by using aspnet_regsql) So the main question is can I do this without deriving abstract classes like MembershipProvider, RoleProvider etc? What I would prefer not to do is implement all the abstract methods from these classes. The second question is still about the best practice for authentication e.g. for the small projects, for the large ones?

• Storing expression references to data base

  I have standard arithmetic expressions sotred as strings eg. "WIDTH * 2 + HEIGHT * 2" In this example WIDTH and HEIGHT references other objects in my system and the literals WIDTH and HEIGHT refers to a property (Name) on those objects. The problem I'm having is when the Name property on an expression object changes the expression won't match anymore. One solution I came up with is to instead of storing "WIDTH * 2 + HEIGHT * 2" i store "{ID_OF_WIDTH} * 2 + {ID_OF_HEIGHT} * 2" And let my parser be able to parse this new syntax and implement an interface or such on referenced objects IExpressionReference { string IdentifierName { get; } } Anyone have a better/alternative solution to my problem?

• Integrating a ClickOnce app with Outlook

  I have a ClickOnce app that used to be run by users with Power User privileges. So to integrate to outlook (e.g. syncing of emails, appointments and addresses) I used a 3rd party component from Add-In Express, which includes an ActiveX DLL. So when the user would download my app, I'd register the ActiveX DLL (if it wasn't already registered) and then would just interop with it in the application. Well, now the users had their privileges changed to standard limited User. Which means that they can't register DLLs (since it writes to the registry keys that are off limit). And the integration with Outlook fails, of course. What are some of options to integrate with Outlook for my situation?
