• Custom date time picker for Windows Forms that is locked to GMT time

  Using Visual Studio 2008, c#, .net 2.0. I have a Windows Forms client application that contains a scheduling UI section, currently this is housed only in the London office with the standard datetime picker control, the selected time is saved in a UK database (GMT) and a London based server aapplication processes the schedules. There is a requirement to roll the client out to various global locations, Hong Kong, New York etc and allow them to setup schedules that run according to GMT time on the London server. I'll have a label on screen saying "note schedules are GMT" what I need is a good way to present a datetime picker that always shows and is in sync with the database server's GMT time regardless of where the client app is running globally. Suggestions on how to acheive this? thanks.

• How can I determine if jquery tab is shown because of user click or from tab rotation

  I've been using the jQuery UI tabs for a bit now and an interesting request has come up. The current tab setup is using the rotation feature. I need to find a way to determine if the tab is shown because of the result of the rotation itself, or because a user physically clicked the tab. I've wired up all of the standard events, show and select and they fire regardless of the source of the tab change. Does anyone have any ideas? Basically I'd like to do something additional if the user clicked the tab, but not if the tab changes by itself via the rotation. If I wire up the click even to the tabs themselves it doesn't seem to get fired at all, I'm assuming because the tabs widget is using that event itself.

• How to convert DateTime string into a Format string

  With .NET, I have "Thursday, April 10, 2008 1:30:00 PM" and I want "dddd, dd MMMM, yyyy h:m:s t", "6:09:01 PM" and want ""hh:mm:ss tt", "Fri 29 Aug" and want "ddd d MMM", and so on. It seems I should be able to use DateTimeFormatInfo in some way. I figured I can format the date with each pattern returned by GetAllDateTimePatterns, and when the original date string and the formated date string match then I have the format. Yet, I want to generate custom formats, not the standard formats. I want the format string. I do not want the date. I have both the DateTime value and the formatted string value for the date. I need <formatString> as in ToString(<formatString>).

  Hi, I'm looking for a user interface for a MediaPlayer which should be able to play video as well as audio files. Furthermore it needs the following things (nothing fancy): TextView for playing time Progress Bar for progress visulization Play/Pause/Stop buttons NO playlist functionality required, the player will only play a single item (that's why I don't need next/previous buttons). It sounds pretty much like the standard audio-player of Android = 2.0. Sure, I could try to find its source code but that would require to tediously check out the entire source. • Is there a DRMAA Java library that works with Torque/PBS?

  Does anybody know a Java implementation of the DRMAA-API that is known to work with PBS/Torque cluster software? The background behind this: I would like to submit jobs to a newly set-up linux cluster from java using a DRMAA compliant API. The cluster is managed by PBS/Torque. Torque includes PBS DRMAA 1.0 library for Torque/PBS that contains a DRMA-C binding and provides in libdrmaa.so and .a binaries. I know that Sun grid engine includes a drmaa.jar providing a Java-DRMAA API. In fact I opted to use SGE but it was decided to try PBS first. The theory behind that decision was: 'DRMAA is a standard and therefore a Java API needs only a standards compliant drmaa-c binding.' However, I couldn't find such 'general DRMAA-C-java API' and now assume that this assumption is wrong and that the Java libraries are engine specific. Are we stuck here? Any comments appreciated.

• taskbar-free window manager

  I'm looking for a window manager that is not based on the "standard" taskbar (which I find a poor idea and I'm completely tired of). I'm aware of tiling window managers and improvements in last versions of operating systems, but I can't find what I need. I suppose that any window takes the whole screen (or can be tiled), and I imagine switching between windows like that: on a hotkey or mouse hot zone the screen becomes a task switcher where tasks are organized in a somewhat convenient manner. Well, it's a bit like a taskbar with autohide, but I think there could be some more convenient ideas than simply stacking icons and descriptions... It is also supposed to be lightweight enough, for example to run on a netbook. Any suggestions?

• xerces serialization in Java 6

  In Java 6, the entire xerces XML parser/serializer implementation is now in the Java runtime (rt.jar). The packages have been moved under the com.sun.* namespace, which places them off-limits for explicit reference within client code. This is not a problem when using the parser, which is instantiated via javax API-defined factories. However, our code also uses xerces serialization (org.apache.xml.serialize.* ). AFAICT, there are no javax.xml API-defined factories for creating instances of Serializer and OutputFormat. This seems to imply that the only way to get one is to explicitly call the com.sun.org.apache.xml.serialize.* APIs. I've found the serialization classes in javax.xml.stream, but they don't seem to provide any output-formatting control like the xerces OutputFormat class. Question: Is there a way to access the xerces serialization functionality (which is in rt.jar) via a javax standard API, without including xerces.jar and also without explicitly instantiating com.sun.* classes? If not, is there an javax API-compliant way to achieve the same effect?

• Sharepoint Blog Category view - Pagination issue...

  Folks, I am facing a rather strange issue. In my Sharepoint Blog, I am not able to view more than 10 posts when I click on the Category filter page. The page only shows the latest 10 posts and when I click on the pagination for the next 10, it simply says that "There are no posts in this category." I tried searching online and some one had a solution to it too, but that is with the Query String (URL) Filter which is not available in MOSS2007 Standard edition... How can I get around this? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

• Effects of the `extern` keyword on C functions

  In C I did not notice any effect of the extern keyword used before function declaration. At first I thougth that when defining extern int f(); in a single file forces you to implement it outside of the files scope, however I found out that both extern int f(); int f() {return 0;} And extern int f() {return 0;} Compiles just fine, with no warnings from gcc. I used gcc -Wall -ansi, he wouldn't even accept // comments. Are there any effects for using extern before function definitions? Or is it just an optional keyword with no side effects for functions. In the latter case I don't understand why did the standard designers chose to litter the grammar with superfluous keywords. EDIT: to clarify, I know there's usage for extern in variables, but I'm only asking about extern in functions.

• Ok to use VirtualProtect to change resource in Delphi?

(although I'm not so sure at this point!) • MySQL, C++: Retrieving auto-increment ID

  I have a table with an auto-incrementing ID. After inserting a new row, I would like to retrieve the new ID. I found an article that used the MySQL function LAST_INSERT_ID(). The article says to create a new query and submit it. I'm using MySQL Connector C++, Windows XP and Vista, and Visual Studio 9. Here are my questions: Is there an API, for the connector, that will fetch the ID out of the record? Does the result set, after an insert/append, contain the new ID? The LAST_INSERT_ID is MySQL specific. Is there an SQL standard method for obtaining the new ID?

• Reducing the pain writing integration and system tests

  I would like to make integration tests and system tests for my applications but producing good integration and system tests have often needed so much effort that I have not bothered. The few times I tried, I wrote custom, application-specific test harnesses, which felt like re-inventing the wheel each time. I wonder if this is the wrong approach. Is there a "standard" approach to integration and full system testing? EDIT: To clarify, it's automated tests, for desktop and web applications. Ideally a complete test suite that exercises the full functionality of the application.

• Get the number of calendar weeks between 2 dates in C#

  For the purposes of this question, let's assume the user will be from the US and will use the standard Gregorian calendar. So, a calendar week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday. What I'm trying to do is determine the number of calendar weeks that exist between two dates. A perfect example of my problem exists in October 2010. Between 10/16 and 10/31 there are 4 calendar weeks. View a picture of October 2010 October 10 - October 16 October 17 - October 23 October 24 - October 30 October 31 - November 6 I'd prefer to stay away from any hardcoded logic like: if (Day == DayOfWeek.Saturday && LastDayOfMonth == 31) { ... } Can anyone think of a logical way to do this?

• jqueryForm and empty uploads

  Hi All, Been scratching my head for too long on this: Using jquery.form, (http://malsup.com/jquery/form) with PHP ... my $_FILES['someimage'] gets set but the error number is always UPLOAD_ERR_NO_FILE, size is also 0. The JavaScript: $('form input[type=file]').change(function(){ $(this).clone().appendTo('#imgform'); $('#imgform').ajaxForm(); $('#imgform').ajaxSubmit( { type:'POST' } ); }); Which appends to: <form id="imgform" method="POST" action="/api/images.php" enctype="multipart/form-data"></form> From another form which has bog-standard file inputs. PHP logs are clean, but var_dumping $_FILES always shows that the index is set to the name of the form element ... but no data. Thanks guys! As I can't rely on the users to generate PDF/A conforming documents, I need a tool to check and convert standard PDFs into PDF/A format. What is the best tool you know of? Price Quality Speed Available APIs Open-source tools would be prefered, but a search revealed none. iText can create PDF/a, but converting isn't easy to do, as you have to read every page and copy it to a new document, losing all bookmarks and annotations in this process. (At least as far as I know, if you know of an easy solution, let me know). APIs should be available for either PHP, Java or a command-line-tool should be provided. Please do not list either GUI-only or Online-only solutions.

• C# - How can i open a second winform asynchronously but still behave as a child to the parent form?

  I am creating an application and i would like to implement a progress window that appears when a lengthy process is taking place. I've created a standard windows form project to which i've created my app using the default form. I've also created a new form to use as a progress window. The problem arises when i open the progress window (in a function) using: ProgressWindow.ShowDialog(); When this command is encountered, the focus is on the progress window and i assume it's now the window who's mainloop is being processed for events. The downside is it blocks the execution of my lengthy operation in the main form. If i open the progress window using: ProgressWindow.Show(); Then the window opens correctly and now doesn't block the execution of the main form but it doesn't act as a child (modal) window should, i.e. allows the main form to be selected, is not centered on the parent, etc.. Any ideas how i can open a new window but continue processing in the main form?

  Fellow StackOverflowers, is there a way for me to remove a queue or a topic in ActiveMQ programatically? I am using ActiveMQ's standard persistency, and my application requires that, on startup, all new queues be dynamically re-created (unless there are messages stored in the queue, in which case, the queue should remain to exist). I am also creating all queues programatically through sessions. Is there an equivalent to that procedure, only to delete a queue? Querying and iterating through the existing queues would also be useful, but i haven't found a way to do that yet. Please help an ActiveMQ noob! =)

  I know REST is meant to be resource-oriented, which roughly translates to CRUD operations on these resources using standard HTTP methods. But what I just wanted to update a part of a resource? For example, let's say I have Payment resource and I wanted to mark its status as "paid". I don't want to POST the whole Payment object through HTTP (sometimes I don't even have all the data). What would be the RESTful way of doing this?   Adding support for Unicode passwords it an important feature that should not be ignored by the developpers. Still adding support for Unicode in the passwords it's a tricky job because the same text can be encoded in different ways in Unicode and this is not something you may want to prevent people from logging in due to this. Let's say that you'll store the passwords os UTF-8. Now the question is how you should normalize the Unicode data? You had to be sure that you'll be able to compare it. You need to be sure that when the next Unicode standard will be released it will not invalidate your password verification. Note: still there are some places where Unicode passwords are probably never be used, but this question is not about why or when to use Unicode passwords, is about how to implement them the proper way.
