• What is the primary use of Vertex Buffer Objects?

  From what I've read, it seems VBOs are purely for performance. I'm working on a very rudimentary learning project in lwjgl and I'm just trying to figure out what more advanced features of the library I should be delving into, and what their use is. My understanding is that VBOs allow a person to keep vertexes in VRAM while they aren't currently being drawn in a scene. In my case, I'm just drawing quads and performance probably isn't a concern at all, but I'm trying to piece together what's happening under the hood. If I'm drawing quads directly, I'm drawing from the CPU memory, correct? Also, if I'm not doing any checks for visibility, does that mean I'm rendering absolutely everything in the "scene", regardless of whether its in view? Are VBOs a way to store objects and only render what's needed?

  Alright here is the problem: the creators of a quite popular flash-based game have asked me to port their game to Android. They are not interested in any other platforms so we don't need to be worrying about iOS or PC. They want the best performance on just Android (I guess that's the point of porting a flash-based game. They could have just went with it) They found Unity 'slow'. How would the performance (on android) of other engines compare? Are they expecting too much i.e. finding Unity slow? I am in favor of Unity since development is a little easier with more things being visual (I am not experienced as you might have guessed). • Get Compiz working on x1300 ati

  Hi, I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a thinkpad T60 with an ati mobile x1300. Ubuntu isn't loading any proprietary drivers and compiz doesn't work. A google search turned up nothing. Sure, some people reported "bad performance", but I'm not getting any "performance" with compiz and these post were all for previous editions. I'm new to messing with ati drivers. Is there a way to make sure xorg-video-ati is loaded? Do I have to add any voodoo lines somewhere in /etc/X11/? Did anyone else have this problem? Thanks for your help!

  I need to develop an app for booking appointments. This is gonna be hosted in a shared server. So performance is the most important thing. I have used symfony2. I quite liked the framework. But seems to be heavy. Which framework would suit me considering my requirements? I have shortlisted three frameworks yii, symfony2 and ZF2. I am not asking which framework is better. All the three are good frameworks. I want to know which will suit my requirements. My first priority would be performance (I will be using AJAX wherever possible), second would be maintenance and development time and third community support. Or should I use my own handlers to separate views and logic and just use raw php?

  I am making a game where you fly a ship around some randomly generated planets. Since I am using a for loop to draw over 5000 planets, using the rectangle class or an oval-type class for this is not an option, since creating many objects will severely affect performance. Bitmasking each planet will likely result in performance issues too, so the only candidate is color based collision detection, because I don't need to apply some sort of object to everything I want to check for collisions. Is any way to check the perimeter around the ship for a certain color?

• using PixelBender to double the size of a bitmap

  I have a performance question about pixel bender. I want to enlarge many BitmapData (double their size into new BitmapData). I was doing this with as3, but wanted to use pixel bender to get better performance. On my machines, I get great comparative performance out of many pixel bender demonstrations. To my surprise (or bad coding / understanding), I am getting much worse performance out of pixel bender -- 2 seconds to do 3000 scalings vs .5 seconds! I expected to get at least the same performance as as3. What am I doing wrong? • WebSphere Application Server EJB Optimization

  We are working on developing a Java EE based application. Our application is Java 1.5 compatible and will be deployed to WAS ND 6.1.0.21 with EBJ 3.0 and Web Services feature packs. The configuration is currently one cell with two clusters. Each cluster will have two nodes. Our application, or our system, as I should rather say, comes in two or three parts. Part 1: An ear deployed to one cluster that contains 3rd party vendor code combined with customization code. Their code is EJB 2.0 compliant and has a lot of Remote Home interfaces. Part 2: An ear deployed to the same cluster as the first ear. This ear contains EBJ 3's that make calls into the EJB 2's supplied by the vendor and the custom code. These EJB 3's are used by the JSF UI also packaged with the EAR, and some of them are also exposed as web services (JAX-WS 2.0 with SOAP 1.2 compliance) for other clients. Part 3: There may be other services that do not depend on our vendor/custom code app. These services will be EJB 3.0's and web services that are deployed to the other cluster. Per a recommendation from some IBM staff on site here, communication between nodes in a cluster can be EJB RMI. But if we are going across clusters and/or other cells, then the communication should be web services. That said, some of us are wondering about performance and optimizing communication for speed of our applications that will use our web services and EJB's. Right now most EJB's are exposed as remote. (and our vendor set theirs up that way, rather than also exposing local home interfaces). We are wondering if WAS does any optimizations between apps in the same node/cluster node space. If two apps are installed in the same area and they call each other via remote home interface, is WAS smart enough to make it a local home interface call? Are their other optimization techniques? Should we consider them? Should we not? What are the costs/benefits? Here is the question from one of our team members as sent in their email: The question is: Supposing we develop our EJBs as remote EJBs, where our UI controller code is talking to our EXT java services via EJB3...what are our options for performance optimization when both the EJB server and client are running in the same container? As one point of reference, google has given me some oooooold websphere performance tuning documentation from 2000 that explains a tuning configuration you can set to enable Call By Reference for EJB communication when they're in the same application server JVM. It states the following: Because EJBs are inherently location independent, they use a remote programming model. Method parameters and return values are serialized over RMI-IIOP and returned by value. This is the intrinsic RMI "Call By Value" model. WebSphere provides the "No Local Copies" performance optimization for running EJBs and clients (typically servlets) in the same application server JVM. The "No Local Copies" option uses "Call By Reference" and does not create local proxies for called objects when both the client and the remote object are in the same process. Depending on your workload, this can result in a significant overhead savings. Configure "No Local Copies" by adding the following two command line parameters to the application server JVM: * -Djavax.rmi.CORBA.UtilClass=com.ibm.CORBA.iiop.Util * -Dcom.ibm.CORBA.iiop.noLocalCopies=true CAUTION: The "No Local Copies" configuration option improves performance by changing "Call By Value" to "Call By Reference" for clients and EJBs in the same JVM. One side effect of this is that the Java object derived (non-primitive) method parameters can actually be changed by the called enterprise bean. Consider Figure 16a: Also, we will also be using Process Server 6.2 and WESB 6.2 as well in the future. Any ideas? recommendations? Thanks

• Bacula & Multiple Tape Devices, and so on

  Bacula won't make use of 2 tape devices simultaneously. (Search for #-#-# for the TL;DR) A little background, perhaps. In the process of trying to get a decent working backup solution (backing up 20TB ain't cheap, or easy) at $dayjob, we bought a bunch of things to make it work. Firstly, there's a Spectra Logic T50e autochanger, 40 slots of LTO5 goodness, and that robot's got a pair of IBM HH5 Ultrium LTO5 drives, connected via FibreChannel Arbitrated Loop to our backup server. There's the backup server.. A Dell R715 with 2x 16 core AMD 62xx CPUs, and 32GB of RAM. Yummy. That server's got 2 Emulex FCe-12000E cards, and an Intel X520-SR dual port 10GE NIC. We were also sold Commvault Backup (non-NDMP). Here's where it gets really complicated. Spectra Logic and Commvault both sent respective engineers, who set up the library and the software. Commvault was running fine, in so far as the controller was working fine. The Dell server has Ubuntu 12.04 server, and runs the MediaAgent for CommVault, and mounts our BlueArc NAS as NFS to a few mountpoints, like /home, and some stuff in /mnt. When backing up from the NFS mountpoints, we were seeing ~= 290GB/hr throughput. That's CRAP, considering we've got 20-odd TB to get through, in a <48 hour backup window. The rated maximum on the BlueArc is 700MB/s (2460GB/hr), the rated maximum write speed on the tape devices is 140MB/s, per drive, so that's 492GB/hr (or double it, for the total throughput). So, the next step was to benchmark NFS performance with IOzone, and it turns out that we get epic write performance (across 20 threads), and it's like 1.5-2.5TB/hr write, but read performance is fecking hopeless. I couldn't ever get higher than 343GB/hr maximum. So let's assume that the 343GB/hr is a theoretical maximum for read performance on the NAS, then we should in theory be able to get that performance out of a) CommVault, and b) any other backup agent. Not the case. Commvault seems to only ever give me 200-250GB/hr throughput, and out of experimentation, I installed Bacula to see what the state of play there is. If, for example, Bacula gave consistently better performance and speeds than Commvault, then we'd be able to say "**$.$ Refunds Plz $.$**" #-#-# Alas, I found a different problem with Bacula. Commvault seems pretty happy to read from one part of the mountpoint with one thread, and stream that to a Tape device, whilst reading from some other directory with the other thread, and writing to the 2nd drive in the autochanger. I can't for the life of me get Bacula to mount and write to two tape drives simultaneously. Things I've tried: Setting Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20 in the Director, File and Storage Daemons Setting Prefer Mounted Volumes = no in the Job Definition Setting multiple devices in the Autochanger resource. Documentation seems to be very single-drive centric, and we feel a little like we've strapped a rocket to a hamster, with this one. The majority of example Bacula configurations are for DDS4 drives, manual tape swapping, and FreeBSD or IRIX systems. I should probably add that I'm not too bothered if this isn't possible, but I'd be surprised. I basically want to use Bacula as proof to stick it to the software vendors that they're overpriced ;) I read somewhere that @KyleBrandt has done something similar with a modern Tape solution.. My question: I have a PHP web application with lots of dynamic files and lots of static contents (videos, images etc.) and it's currently running on a CentOS 6 server and Apache 2.2 since 2 months ago. In past few days, number of our site visitors have gained so fast and I just thought if this number continues to increase with current ratio, we need to change many things (web server, application, etc.) to prevent failures. Because of hardware limitations that we are facing, I thought that it's best for us to start with web server. Should I start with something else? Should I try to increase performance of my PHP application and forget about web server for now? (even if gonna take a long time!) Because of huge usage of .htaccess files (for redirection, rewrites, etc.), I think it's gonna be painful to migrate to NginX as default web server or maybe only for dynamic files. Does this mean that I can't even use Nginx as reverse proxy? I'm not sure latest stable version of NginX and PHP-FPM have a better performance over my current Apache and my limitations (too many things) won't let me to give it a try. Which one is doing better currently? What will I lose by migrating to Nginx? To make it short, what should I do?

• Improving abysmal 802.11n wireless network

  I am in desperate need of help to improve the abysmal performance of my 802.11n wireless network. At best I get 30Mbs (this is an internet download) from a technology that boasts 300Mbs, even worse is the LAN where to date best i have ever gotten is 1Mbs. It is literally quicker to copy the file to a USB and walk it to the other computer. • 32bit SQLServer with AWE NOT enabled. Buffer Cache Hit Ratio High, Disk Read Queue VERY HIGH, WHY?

  We have a "SQLServer 2005 SP3 32bit Enterprise Edition" running on a 32 bit Windows 2003 32bit Enterprise Edition 12GB RAM with AWE enabled using RAID5(5 pysical disks). We tuned AWE to enabled and restart sqlserver this afternoon after work, hope the performance will be better than old time. But there is something that we are very confused. On working days, SQLServer has a very bad performance. When we are looking for reasons, we check Windows Performance counter. Avg. Disk Read Queue Lenght > 140 Avg. Disk Write Queue Length < 1 SQL Server Buffer Cache Hit Ratio > 96% %Processor Time < 30% SQL Server Total Server Memory < 1.8G Obviously, without AWE enabled, SQL Server can use only less than 2G memory. My Question is: why "SQL Server Total server Memory" is less than 2G?I think SQL Server will use all 2G process address space. Does this counter count anything out? we known that sql server is sufferring lack of memory, but why "buffer hit ratio“ is as high as 96? Any advice is welcomed!

• Hardware, network infrastructure for runnng gaming server nd on VirtualGL

  Foud nice project VirtualGL (http://www.virtualgl.org/). Tried to run 3D fames (EVE Online, Prototype) on server and display the output on thin client using 100Mbps network. Server: Gentoo Linux on AMD Phoenom II x6 3.4Gz, 8GB RAM, 2x NVIDIA 9800 GTX in single session with display resulution 1024x768 on client. Performance is very promising. Going to increase network speed to 1Gbps (using either Ethernet or Fiber) and run 5-6 clients simultenously. My questions are: a) what would be better for network - 1Gbps Ethernet or Fiber (clients are distributed in max 20m around server)? Is that a must to use managed switch for better network performance? b) Should I increase number of video cards to put in SLI on server (going to use Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 which has 6 PCIExpress slots [2 x4, 2 x8 and 2 x16]). Will it impact performance significantly. If I need to increase the number of video cards - what would be better - put 2 banks of video cards with 3 in bank using SLI, or 3 banks with 2 in the bank? Would linux recognize that and properly use all banks of video cards? c) any suggestions on good thin clients supporting 1920x1080 HDMI video and 1Gbps network I understand that my questions can't be answered clearly (unless someone already managed to use this kind of stuff ;)) although any suggestions would be very helpful.

• Improving IO with FlashCache

  I have a server with 2 HDD's (2x 1 TB), running in RAID 1 (SW-RAID). I want to improve IO performance by using flashcache. There are running KVM virtual machines on it, using LVM. Regarding this, I have the following questions: Will this even work? flashcache works for block devices, however these are all virtual machines with their own setup. How much would I expect to increase performance? Most virtual machines run websites and some host games. How big does the SSD needs to be? Would having a bigger SSD increase performance since it's able to cache more files? What happens if the SSD dies? Would flashcache retrieve files from the traditional HDD and I could simply replace the SSD? How much faster would writeback be in comparison with writethrough and writearound? I have no access to a test system unfortunately, so could I install flashcache on a live server without unmounting the the disks? I found a great tutorial here which I would be using.

• Current wisdom on SQL Server and Hyperthreading?

  Lots of articles out there (see Slava Oks's original SQL 2000 article and Kevin Kline's SQL 2005 update) recommend disabling hyperthreading on SQL servers, or at least testing your specific workload before enabling it on your servers. This issue is gradually becoming less relevant as true multi-core processors replace hyperthreaded ones, but what's the current wisdom on this issue? Does this advice change any with SQL 2005 64-bit, or SQL 2008, or Windows Server 2008? Ideally, this should be tested in advance in a staging environment, but what about for servers that have already made it into production with HT enabled? How can I tell if performance issues we're experiencing might be related to HT? Is there some specific combination of perfmon counters that might point me in that direction, as opposed to all the other things I normally pursue when working on improving SQL performance? Edit: This is especially attractive because of the potential for an across the board improvement for some of my high-cpu servers, but the client is going to want to see something concrete that helps me identify which servers really could benefit from disabling hyperthreading. Of course, conventional performance troubleshooting is ongoing, but sometimes any little bit helps.
