  • Deploying patches and new versions.

    I'm deveoping a big project, I have the dev folder (connected to a specific subdomain) then the "real" folder, the live one. When I'm ready to push patches or whole new versions I'm currently copying the files individually, is there a program that can help me do this task? Keep in mind that some files (the config one and the htacess) must never change in the live version. Thank you

  • Radio buttons being reset in FF on cache-refresh

    (This is technically an addendum to an earlier StackOverflow question I had posted, but my original post asked a different question which doesn't really cover this topic -- I don't want to edit my older question as I feel this is different enough to merit its own page) While browsing my website in Firefox 3.5 (and only FF3.5), I come across a page with two radio buttons that have the following HTML code: <input id="check1" type="radio" value="True" name="check" checked="checked"/> <input id="check2" type="radio" value="False" name="check"/> This page renders as expected, with 'check1' checked and 'check2' unchecked. When I then go to refresh the page by pressing Control + R, the two radio buttons render, but they are both unchecked even though the raw HTML code is the same (as above). If I do a cache-miss refresh (via Control + F5 or Control + Shift + R), the page returns back to the way you'd expect it. This is not a problem in any other browser I've tried except FF3.5. What is causing these radio buttons to be reset on a normal refresh? How can I avoid this?

    Hey all, I was hoping someone can answer this question for me. I am trying to display wall posts, photos and videos for a certain user for example http://www.facebook.com/sony. I can see the wall posts, photos and videos without signing up for Facebook. Do I need to use the facebook connect API to access the photos and and videos for sony so that I can display them in my iPhone application? I need to display the wall posts as a table view and the images and videos as a gallery very much like how the facebook app displays it. Any help or a API specific page would be appreciated. I'd like to create a website that is the exact copy of another website (I do not own but I know will let me do this) where I change a few things, mainly swap images and hide some divs..   • Problem: connecting to drupal on hostgator without pointed domain.

    I need to connect to drupal on a website that I'm programming on a hostgator account. The website that I'm working on currently receives a lot of traffic, and I would like to make sure that it is fully functional before I launch the new website. The old website was programmed with .asp which hostgator doesn't support, and the old webhost doesn't support drupal or .php which are integral to the new web design. Drupal 6 has been freshly installed on my website, but when I try to login, it redirects me to http://gator83.hostgator.com/?q=node&destination=node instead of the drupal control panel. Is it possible to work around this? Thank you in advance.

What would be the best way to retain a timer, even if the app is closed? Should I do this based on the Device Clock? or should I set a time to a server, and get the time when the device starts up?   • Are there any good resources on developing ASP.NET for Windows CE Internet Explorer?

    I've been tasked with creating a web app to be consumed by a mobile device sporting Windows CE 5.0 (and some with Windows CE 4.2). I've found a host of things that seem to work fine in IE6 on my desktop, but fail when rendered in IE for Windows CE. IE6 is bad enough as it is...does it lose any more functionality on an embedded system? Are there quirks that a developer would need to know about? AJAX seems extremely unlikely. JavaScript seems quirky when linking to a .js file. Panels with scrollbars are finicky. Textboxes can't get focus. DefaultButtons on a form don't work. Any help or resources you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • Reason for monolithic data files

    Primarily this seems to be a technique used by games, where they have all the sounds in one file, textures in another etc. With these files commonly reaching the GB size. What is the reason behind doing this over maintaining it all in subdirectories as small files - one per texture which many small games use this, with the monolithic system being favoured by larger companies? Is there some file system overhead with lots of small files? Are they trying to protect their property - although most just seem to be a compressed file with a new extension?

  • What are the most likely reasons an application would fail on only one of my servers?

    I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens? What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server.

  • Do you think the AI industry will ever come back?

    I just spent some time reading about the collapse of the AI industry and realized a lot of the reason it failed was because technology was slow to catch up with their theories on when it would be available. I also read that it is believed computers that will be able to emulate human synapses may be made round 2015-2025. It's 2010 now and were getting pretty close to that time frame. I was wondering if anyone thinks that the AI industry will return as the technology lands? And if so, will it change the language market? Could Lisp like languages suddenly experience a burst of growth if it does? Idk I just thought it was interesting thinking about it.

  • A good architecture is evil? Hardcode forever?

    I have worked in many companies. Most of all reached a big success in their field. Some times I found the code was written by owner or co-owner or the first developer of this company. It was strange from architectural point of view code or awful code styled, or hardcoded and so on. I know a couple of startups, that were grown up and were started from the "one night" code. Is it only way to get success to write code in this way? Why does a code written "on knee" but in time is better than delayed well thought-out one? What about future? Which way is the best: to write a good architecture, code and spend some more time at the startup or to write "fast" and hardcoded one that would be completely (partially) throw out (or maybe wouldn't) after some period of time (or never)?

  • Is it rude to add "TODO: wtf?" in source code?

    I encountered something ... well, you know TDWTF... something like that in an international project I'm working on. The code was written by a team mate. For a second I was tempted to add // TODO: wtf? to the infringing code but restrained myself. The project is indeed on a professional level, but for internal conversation, more colloquial language is used - but still no "bad" words as in "wtf". Usually, I'd surely not add such a comment, but I believe there are a few factors that allow consideration still: 1. It is not visible except as a comment in the source code (of course). 2. It is internal to our team - other developers may happen see it but it is not their code. 3. Comments in source code are usually accepted to be more colloquial, since it is "kept between us developers". Would you totally advise to never add such a comment? Or do you regard it as an edge case? Did you possibly add something similar yourself?

    Is it possible or even constructive to make a game without any graphics (but is intended to become graphical) I'm not good with graphics at all, so I'd like to write the skeleton for the game then have a graphics programmer/artist fill in the rest. I could write up all the major classes, and their interactions, and all the major functions/parts of the game. I have a fixed table setting in pixels instead of percentages, so I don't understand why this is an issue. I want the text in the cells to stay in the same position when zooming. The code must be manipulated from the code behind, so I cannot create a separate CSS file. Any help is appreciated. Here are two examples to illustrate what I'm talking about: Normal zoom at 100%: Zoom at 75%: Notice in the second image the two table cells at the bottom are slightly offset to the left. UPDATE: Yes, I understand, we will be implementing a new system in the near future. Obviously this is old and very non-standard, this was dropped in my lap when I started working with it. And we're coming up with plans for a new system to replace it, in the meantime, this is what I have to deal with.

However, I took a java seminar and now Im very interested in using GWT for upcomming projects, although I think the learning curve can be steep.
