• How to deal with callback to your UIController after your UIController unloads?

  Suppose your controller is a table view and one of the cells you are going off to do a length task (say download a thumbnail) to be viewed in the cell. Typically you would have the network call do a callback to your controller when it is done downloading. The callback can then reload the table or do some other form of UI update (hides a spinner etc). However, what if the controller is unloaded? Say the user navigated away from this controller and it got released? What happens? Will the callback still work despite the controller now not in memory? Also, if the callback operates on some objects (say the UITableView) what happens when the controller is deallocated? I suppose the controller can release all the objects and the callback would just be calling methods on nil to prevent crash. But is this the convention?

• Can I batch based on a Property (not just Items)?

  I have a property group, like so: <PropertyGroup> <Platform>Win32;x64</Platform> </PropertyGroup> And I want to batch in an Exec task, like so: <Exec Command='devenv MySolution.sln /Build "Release|%(Platform)"' /> But of course, as written I get an error: error MSB4095: The item metadata %(Platform) is being referenced without an item name. Specify the item name by using %(itemname.Platform). Can I batch tasks on properties that are lists? I suppose I could hack it by creating a placeholder ItemGroup with metadata and batch on that.

• Problem with increment in inline ARM assembly

  Hi , i have the following bit of inline ARM assembly, it works in a debug build but crashes in a release build of iphone sdk 3.1. The problem is the add instructions where i am incrementing the address of the C variables output and x by 4 bytes, this is supposed to increment by the size of a float. • Does MVC replace traditional manually created BLL?

  I'm used to creating the UI, BLL, DAL by hand (some times I've used LINQ-to-SQL or SubSonic for the DAL). I've done several small projects using MVC since its release. On these projects I've still continued to write a BLL and DAL by hand and then incorporate those into the MVC's models/controllers. I'm looking to optimize my time on projects this seems like overkill and a potential waste of time. Question Would it be acceptable to roll a DAL such as SubSonic and directly use it in the Models/Controllers of my MVC web app? Now the models & controllers would act as the BLL. I just see this as a major timesaver to not have to worry about another tier. UPDATE: I just wanted to add that my concern isn't really with the DAL (I frequently use SubSonic and NH) but rather focus on the BLL. Sorry for the confusion.

  It took me hours to figure out how to implement a timer into my program, but when it runs, the app doesn't load completely as it did before the timer. • Netbeans 7.2 not starting

  I recently installed Netbeans 7.2 beta and it worked fine. Then I installed Netbeans 7.2 final release on top of beta and during the installation, Netbeans 7.1 and Netbeans 7.12 were there. Now when I launch Netbeans, it does not go beyond "loading modules" stage. Simply the Netbeans screen disappear few seconds after the launch. Then I did the following. Uninstalled all the Netbeans versions and re-installed Netbeans 7.2 Deleted AppData/Netbeans folder Deleted User/.nbi folder Searched the registry and deleted Netbeans related entries. (But only one entry was found) Deleted Netbeans Folder in Program Files folder. Uninstalled and Re-installed in a separate drive. Uninstalled and Re-installed under another user account. None of the above worked, the only thing I did not try was to re-install the Windows XP operating system. It there any option to try before re-installing the operating system?

• WebView with NSShadow slowdown

  I have a webview that shows some animated boxes, but it slows down and lags horribly when I put a drop shadow in the view. Without the shadow, the webview contents animate smoothly. I achieved a similar effect as safari/chrome when you do a elastic scroll with the touchpad. Looks nice! But doesnt run as smooth as in my inspirations. • Detect at runtime which country's App Store my iPhone app was downloaded from?

  I have a feature in my iPhone application that, for business reasons, should only be shown/available to customers in the US. If I want to release this app to App Stores outside the US, what's the best way to figure out which country I'm in without relying on user-defined settings such as language and locale? In my mind, the ideal solution is that there's some runtime property that can tell me which App Store country the app was downloaded from, and I can take action accordingly. Looking through the docs and searching the web, I'm not coming up with anything in this department. I don't expect the solution to be 100% foolproof as far as users not being in the country they say they're from, but as close as possible would be nice. I suppose one solution would be to make a separate build for a new product on the App Store and have two versions, one for the US and one for the others, but that doesn't seem ideal. I'm hoping it can be the same product on the App Store to prevent things like fragmentation of user reviews. Thanks in advance!

• iPhone Application crashing upon loading a new Detail View

  Hi, My problem is when trying to load a detail view through a table cell, the application constantly crashes. The error that comes up when running through debug is "__TERMINATING_DUE_TO_UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION___" objc exception thrown. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. • A lot to merge after creating a new branch in SVN

  We have recently made a new branch, let us call it rel3.6, which was based on the last release named rel3.5. Work has started on rel3.6, and meanwhile some bugs has been fixed on rel3.5 which now is used for a service pack to be released soon. Today I wanted to merge those bugs from rel3.5 to rel3.6, so I fired up SmartSVN. Standing in the rel3.6 branch i chosed\ to merge with rel3.5 and selected to browse for a revision range. To my surprise there was a huge list of changes even though I checked "Stop on copy" and only showing mergeable revisions. Most of them where dated back before the creation of rel3.6. I did not expect to find anything from before rel3.5 was created. If I make a merge, the only thing I get are changes and conflicts to directory properties. Have I misunderstood something, or is it possible that something was done wrong when creating the branch?

What I'd like to do is that thread A requests and gets foo.txt's file handle from the HandlerFactory class thread B requests foo.txt's file handler handler class recognizes that this file handle has been checked out handler class puts thread A to sleep thread B closes file handle using a wrapper method from HandlerFactory HandlerFactory notifies sleeping threads thread B wakes and successfully gets foo.txt's file handle This is what I have so far, def get_handler(self, file_path, type): self.lock.acquire() if file_path not in self.handlers: self.handlers[file_path] = open(file_path, type) elif not self.handlers[file_path].closed: time.sleep(1) self.lock.release() return self.handlers[file_path][type] I believe this covers the sleeping and handler retrieval successfully, but I am unsure how to wake up all threads, or even better wake up a specific thread.

Please, can you tell scenarios and reasons when you: Use Microsoft.Ajax instead of jquery or mix both libraries? • Is it possible to cut down the size of Flex 4 deployments?

  My bin-release for a very simple Web project using Flex 4 is weighing in at 1.5MB. 40% of that is taken up by one single file which is over 600K all by itself. Here are the files that take up most of the volume: framework_4.0.0.14159.swz 608KB spark_4.0.0.14159.swz 311KB textLayout_1.0.0.595.swz 153KB There are others as well, but this is over a megabyte right there. All this was fine when I was writing components for a large Flex application, but now I need to do widgets on an HTML page using a CMS. Are all these files really necessary to deploy? Are there things I can do to cut down the weight?

• Adding a UIView to a UITableViewCell via cell.contentView

  I have a class called GraphView that extends UIView that basically draws a small little line chart. I need one of these graphs at the top of each section in my UITableView. So I tried by creating a separate cell at the top of one of my sections and then on that cell I did: [cell.contentView addSubview:graphView]; [graphView release]; But when I scroll down, it's like the graph is glitchy and it shows up in random spots along the UITableView. Anyone have ideas or insight? Is there a better way to incorporate another UIView into the top of each section in my UITableView?

• How can I implement drag-out-to-delete in Flex?

  I have a List component from which I'd like to be able to remove items using drag & drop, but without having a specific target. If you use the mac, the behaviour I'm looking for is something like what the Dock uses; when you drag something out of the bounds of the control it should get an icon that indicates that it'll be deleted (OSX uses a cloud or something?) and then if you release it it will be removed from the list.   How would one go about detecting what has been selected on a page in a browser? Example: Click, hold, select 3 words and 1 image on a page, release. Sub-question: How to detect what letter someone clicked on? Without using: A span injector breaking everything up OR a WYSIWYG plugin I'm hoping this isn't just a type of browser interaction you can't detect.   In almost all of the books I read and examples I go through I see pointers initialized this way. Say that I have a class variable NSString *myString that I want to initialize. I will almost always see that done this way: -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { NSString *tempString = [[NSString alloc] init]; myString = tempString; [tempString release]; } return self; } Why can't I just do the following? -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { myString = [[NSString alloc] init]; } return self; } I don't see why the extra tempString is ever needed in the first place, but I could be missing something here with memory management. Is the way I want to do things acceptable or will it cause some kind of leak? I have read the Memory Management Guide on developer.apple.com and unless I am just missing something, I don't see the difference.

• When using source control, what files should actually be commited?

  I am working on a small project, hosted on Google Code, using SVN for source control. This is my first time using source control, and I'm a bit confused about what I should actually be committing to the repository. My project is very simple: A Class Library project, written in C#. The actual code that I have written is a single file. My question is this: Should I be committing the entire project (including directories like Debug, Release, Properties, etc.) or just my main .cs file? • OS X Terminal: Meta key + alt functionality at the same time

  Is there a way to use "alt/option" key as a meta key but still be able to use the key to make some characters which need it? For example in my local keyboard layout: @ is alt-2 \ is alt-shift-7 | is alt-7 etc. So if I set alt as meta key, I can't make those characters. On the other hand using "press esc, release esc, press a key" to make meta key sequences makes my hands hurt. Any emacs users with international keyboards who have solved this, please give any tips you might have! :) edit: It appears that I can set alt as meta key and then add these kind of settings in inputrc: "\e2": "@" This works in bash shell but it still won't work with emacs though, so no good.
