• .NET Publishing files but allowing them to be edited?

  I had media files require in the project so i did this + set built action to content Now here are my problems I would like my app to check for .NET and to check for other installs which is fine now that i made a prerequisite I would like to copy media files when i publish One of these files is a config file i like the user to edit Problem is after doing 1 which gives me a publish folder with a setup.exe + files i have no idea where my installed files are and if i modify the file.ext.deploy i get an error about the hash of the file modified. Is there a way i can have plain non deploy files or distribute the bin/release folder as i normally do but add something to check my prerequisite?

• Can I batch based on a Property (not just Items)?

  I have a property group, like so: <PropertyGroup> <Platform>Win32;x64</Platform> </PropertyGroup> And I want to batch in an Exec task, like so: <Exec Command='devenv MySolution.sln /Build "Release|%(Platform)"' /> But of course, as written I get an error: error MSB4095: The item metadata %(Platform) is being referenced without an item name. Specify the item name by using %(itemname.Platform). Can I batch tasks on properties that are lists? I suppose I could hack it by creating a placeholder ItemGroup with metadata and batch on that.

• Which relational databases exist with a public API for a high level language?

  We typically interface with a RDBMS through SQL. I.e. we create a sql string and send it to the server through JDBC or ODBC or something similar. Are there any RDBMS that allow direct interfacing with the database engine through some API in Java, C#, C or similar? I would expect an API that allows constructs like this (in some arbitrary pseudo code): Iterator iter = engine.getIndex("myIndex").getReferencesForValue("23"); for (Reference ref: iter){ Row row = engine.getTable("mytable").getRow(ref); } I guess something like this is hidden somewhere in (and available from) open source databases, but I am looking for something that is officially supported as a public API, so one finds at least a note in the release notes, when it changes. In order to make this a question that actually has a 'best' answer: I prefer languages in the order given above and I will prefer mature APIs over prototypes and research work, although these are welcome as well.

• Problem with increment in inline ARM assembly

  Hi , i have the following bit of inline ARM assembly, it works in a debug build but crashes in a release build of iphone sdk 3.1. The problem is the add instructions where i am incrementing the address of the C variables output and x by 4 bytes, this is supposed to increment by the size of a float. • A lot to merge after creating a new branch in SVN

  We have recently made a new branch, let us call it rel3.6, which was based on the last release named rel3.5. Work has started on rel3.6, and meanwhile some bugs has been fixed on rel3.5 which now is used for a service pack to be released soon. Today I wanted to merge those bugs from rel3.5 to rel3.6, so I fired up SmartSVN. Standing in the rel3.6 branch i chosed\ to merge with rel3.5 and selected to browse for a revision range. To my surprise there was a huge list of changes even though I checked "Stop on copy" and only showing mergeable revisions. Most of them where dated back before the creation of rel3.6. I did not expect to find anything from before rel3.5 was created. If I make a merge, the only thing I get are changes and conflicts to directory properties. Have I misunderstood something, or is it possible that something was done wrong when creating the branch?

  I am learning how to encrypt the ConnectionString for our C# (3.5) Application. I read the .Net Framwork Developer Guide (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/89211k9b(VS.80).aspx) about securing connection string. but not fully understand the contents. It says "The connection string can only be decrypted on the computer on which it was encrypted." We have a release machine which will build our application which will generate the OurApp.exe.config and then install it to many product machines. Is that meam we have to have this encryption process separated with our application and run it at individual product machine? We may use the "RSAProtectedConfigurationProvider". It mentioned we need encryption key for that provider. when and how we should provide the encryption key? thanks,

• Does MVC replace traditional manually created BLL?

  I'm used to creating the UI, BLL, DAL by hand (some times I've used LINQ-to-SQL or SubSonic for the DAL). I've done several small projects using MVC since its release. On these projects I've still continued to write a BLL and DAL by hand and then incorporate those into the MVC's models/controllers. I'm looking to optimize my time on projects this seems like overkill and a potential waste of time. Question Would it be acceptable to roll a DAL such as SubSonic and directly use it in the Models/Controllers of my MVC web app? Now the models & controllers would act as the BLL. I just see this as a major timesaver to not have to worry about another tier. UPDATE: I just wanted to add that my concern isn't really with the DAL (I frequently use SubSonic and NH) but rather focus on the BLL. Sorry for the confusion.

• iPhone Application crashing upon loading a new Detail View

  Hi, My problem is when trying to load a detail view through a table cell, the application constantly crashes. The error that comes up when running through debug is "__TERMINATING_DUE_TO_UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION___" objc exception thrown. If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated. • WebView with NSShadow slowdown

  I have a webview that shows some animated boxes, but it slows down and lags horribly when I put a drop shadow in the view. Without the shadow, the webview contents animate smoothly. I achieved a similar effect as safari/chrome when you do a elastic scroll with the touchpad. Looks nice! But doesnt run as smooth as in my inspirations.   Many js files are included into Scripts folder by default in ASP.NET MVC 2 Projects. I suppose developers use jquery library nearly every time they program a site, but what about other files? Please, can you tell scenarios and reasons when you: Use Microsoft.Ajax instead of jquery or mix both libraries? Do you use JQuery validation infrastructure instead of asp.net mvc one, or combine them both? Thank you in advance! P.S. there are also diferrent editions of the same file. Do you include different editions depenending on debug/release build?

• TabContainer in BorderContainer not showing correctly

  Hi, I am using a borderContainer with a fix width and centering in the center of my page (Use of a div around the bordercontainer). Everything works fine until i add a TabContainer. All of a sudden i can not see my Tab's anymore. This goes as wel for IE as FF. Is this a bug or something else? How could i work around this? I'm using the latest release of dojo 1.4.3. • Detect at runtime which country's App Store my iPhone app was downloaded from?

  I have a feature in my iPhone application that, for business reasons, should only be shown/available to customers in the US. If I want to release this app to App Stores outside the US, what's the best way to figure out which country I'm in without relying on user-defined settings such as language and locale? In my mind, the ideal solution is that there's some runtime property that can tell me which App Store country the app was downloaded from, and I can take action accordingly. Looking through the docs and searching the web, I'm not coming up with anything in this department. I don't expect the solution to be 100% foolproof as far as users not being in the country they say they're from, but as close as possible would be nice. I suppose one solution would be to make a separate build for a new product on the App Store and have two versions, one for the US and one for the others, but that doesn't seem ideal. I'm hoping it can be the same product on the App Store to prevent things like fragmentation of user reviews. Thanks in advance!

• Is it possible to cut down the size of Flex 4 deployments?

  My bin-release for a very simple Web project using Flex 4 is weighing in at 1.5MB. 40% of that is taken up by one single file which is over 600K all by itself. Here are the files that take up most of the volume: framework_4.0.0.14159.swz 608KB spark_4.0.0.14159.swz 311KB textLayout_1.0.0.595.swz 153KB There are others as well, but this is over a megabyte right there. All this was fine when I was writing components for a large Flex application, but now I need to do widgets on an HTML page using a CMS. Are all these files really necessary to deploy? Are there things I can do to cut down the weight?

• Adding a UIView to a UITableViewCell via cell.contentView

  I have a class called GraphView that extends UIView that basically draws a small little line chart. I need one of these graphs at the top of each section in my UITableView. So I tried by creating a separate cell at the top of one of my sections and then on that cell I did: [cell.contentView addSubview:graphView]; [graphView release]; But when I scroll down, it's like the graph is glitchy and it shows up in random spots along the UITableView. Anyone have ideas or insight? Is there a better way to incorporate another UIView into the top of each section in my UITableView?

What I'd like to do is that thread A requests and gets foo.txt's file handle from the HandlerFactory class thread B requests foo.txt's file handler handler class recognizes that this file handle has been checked out handler class puts thread A to sleep thread B closes file handle using a wrapper method from HandlerFactory HandlerFactory notifies sleeping threads thread B wakes and successfully gets foo.txt's file handle This is what I have so far, def get_handler(self, file_path, type): self.lock.acquire() if file_path not in self.handlers: self.handlers[file_path] = open(file_path, type) elif not self.handlers[file_path].closed: time.sleep(1) self.lock.release() return self.handlers[file_path][type] I believe this covers the sleeping and handler retrieval successfully, but I am unsure how to wake up all threads, or even better wake up a specific thread.

• When using source control, what files should actually be commited?

  I am working on a small project, hosted on Google Code, using SVN for source control. This is my first time using source control, and I'm a bit confused about what I should actually be committing to the repository. My project is very simple: A Class Library project, written in C#. The actual code that I have written is a single file. My question is this: Should I be committing the entire project (including directories like Debug, Release, Properties, etc.) or just my main .cs file? Sub-question: How to detect what letter someone clicked on?   In almost all of the books I read and examples I go through I see pointers initialized this way. Say that I have a class variable NSString *myString that I want to initialize. I will almost always see that done this way: -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { NSString *tempString = [[NSString alloc] init]; myString = tempString; [tempString release]; } return self; } Why can't I just do the following? -(id)init { if (self = [super init]) { myString = [[NSString alloc] init]; } return self; } I don't see why the extra tempString is ever needed in the first place, but I could be missing something here with memory management. Is the way I want to do things acceptable or will it cause some kind of leak? I have read the Memory Management Guide on developer.apple.com and unless I am just missing something, I don't see the difference.

Is there any error on that line? UPDATE: I see that JIRA 4.0 is out but i can't find any documentation if the API has changed to support this request above. Can anyone find this link to answer that questions.
