• Django on Dreamhost - testing/sand box environment

  I've been using webfaction for all my django needs for the last couple of years but have had a high traffic site fall in my lap that dreamhost are probably better suited to handling. To set up and experiment with a site with webfaction there are your [user].webfactional.com accounts. Which is sweet. Equivalently Dreamhost also offers [name].dreamhosters.com Yet this doesn't seem to work with my database and this doesn't seem to be playing nice with setting up django or passenger_wsgi. So I'm wondering if I'm interpreting the documentation correctly to suggest that in order to make a site that depends on passenger it needs to be running from an active domain. The documentation is really implicit, I'm baffled. Has anyone set up a testing/sand box environment for django using dreamhost, or know how to?

• What process does professional website building follow?

  I've searched for a while, but I can't find anything related on Google or here. Me and some friends were debating starting a company, so I figure it might be good to do a quick pilot project to see how well we can work together. We have a designer who can do HTML, CSS and Flash, enjoys doing art, but doesn't like to do HTML and CSS... And 2 programmers that are willing to do anything. My question is, from an experienced site builder's perspective, what steps do we do - in chronological order - to properly handle a website? Does the designer design the look and feel of the site, then the programmers fill in the gaps with functionality? Or do the programmers create a "mock-up" of the site with most of the functionality, then the designer spices it up? Or is it more of a back-and-forth process? I just want to know how a professional normally handles it.

• IIS 7.5 powershell module usage issues

  Has anyone managed to use this module with success, i'm running 32bit Windows 7, where i have opened an administrator shell using run as administrator, i have imported the WebAdministration module and then attempted to use the commands with some issues, have provided two examples here Websites I created a web site with the following command new-website -name testsite -port 80 -hostheader testsite -physicalpath c:\temp Then i attempted to get the sites details using the command get-website -name testsite but it always returns all sites, seems to ignore the -name parameter. Only way i can get the site is using a filter get-website | ? { $_.name -eq 'testsite' } | get-member When i use appcmd it works as expected using the following command C:\> C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe list site testsite AppPools When i try to list the apppools using the following command dir iis:\apppools i get the following error Get-ChildItem : Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) Yet when i use appcmd as follows i get all the apppools as expected without any error C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe list apppool Has anyone successfully managed to use the WebAdministration module ? • Safe deployment of ASP.Net applications

  Hi All, I have an asp.net app that I want to deploy safely (with as little down time possible). I would love to do something like blue green deployment but without the need for a second web server. So, I know I can use load balancing, etc but I need a quick and cheap approach. I was thinking of doing something like: Setting up another website (copy of original) in IIS, currently I use host headers to direct traffic across sites). I could then view the new site locally until the site is totally online (due to NHibernate start up and various other high intensity tasks this takes a while). Once site 2 is totally started I would then change host headers around giving me a much much smaller down time. So my question is. Has anyone done anything like this? Will IIS restart my app pool or application when changing host headers (making this useless)? Any other options? Thanks for your help all. Guido

  I want to clear the session on Page unload. Here is a condition : If user goes from Page A to Page B of the same site session must not get cleared. If user close the browser window or Tab(close the site),session must gets cleared. I have tried using AJAX PageMethod to call server-side procedure to remove session from client side script.But the procedure is not getting hit,I have checked it using Breakpoint. server side procedure is in master.cs file I will appreciate your help.   Hello Everyone, I was working on a site of Cakephp which was successfully delivered.But recently Client again appered and asked me to put the Wordpress blog in it,to cover up the Blogging thing in his site.He wants to share the authentication between the Cakephp and WP.Whoever registers in his site,then Logins in it and if he clicks on the Blog Tab,he must be redirected to the WP blog with the session still there.After some googling I have installed it in /app/webroot/blog folder but I am not able to edit the .htaccess file. Please help me in the right direction,that how to share the authentication betwenn Cake Php and Wordpress, and the second one how to customize the .htaccess file so that URL's look good. • Implementing a Suspension or Penalty System for Users in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm writing a site in ASP.NET MVC that will have user accounts. As the site will be oriented towards discussion, I think I need a system for admins to be able to moderate users, just like we have here, on Stack Overflow. I'd like to be able to put a user into a "suspension", so that they are able to log in to the site (at which point they are greeted with a message, such as, "Your account has been suspended until [DATE]"), but are unable to do the functions that users they would normally be able to do. What's the best way of implementing this? I was thinking of creating a "Suspended" role, but the thing is, I have a few different roles for normal users themselves, with different privileges. Have you ever designed a feature like this before? How should I do it? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, We are starting a very large web based service project. We are trying to decide what hosting environment to use. We would really like to use Google App Engine for scalability reasons and to eliminate the need to deal with servers ourselves. Secure logins/registrations is very important to us, as well as using our own domain. Our target audience is not very computer savvy. For this reason, we don't want to have the users have to sign up with OpenID as this can't be done within our site. We also do not want to force our customers to sign up with Google. As far as I can see, I am out of luck. I am hoping to have a definite answer to this question. Can I have an encrypted login to our site accessed via our domain, without having to send the customers to another site for the login (OpenID/Google). Thanks.

  Hi Can anyone please help me with this? I have a Windows 2008 server and MVC 2.0 site is hosted under IIS 7.0 root directory. The site works fine. I want to use the BlogEngine.NET with my site. For example if my mite name is http:// mysite.com (which is the root of IIS) and the blog should be http://mysite.com/blog/Default.aspx Is this possible? Can I create a sub virtual directory within my root (where the MVC 2 app is hosted) and run the ASP.NET BlogEngine.Net in it? Any ideas appreciated.

  Okay so I am launching a cloned e-commerce site. I want to create a rewrite rule for the image folder for the second site to fetch images from the first site. RewriteRule ^alice.gif$ www.rhinomart.com/images/h_home.gif When I go to alice.gif directly through the browser it simply redirects me to the rhinomart.com URL and image. How do I prevent the redirect from occurring? When I go to http://www.acnbiz.net/alice.gif it should fetch alice.gif directly from Rhinomart.com/images and not redirect. is it possible???

• SharePoint : https area in a public website

  I'm working on a public website that was built using SharePoint (WSS). We need to add an area in the site where people will be able to purchase items with their credit cards and obviously the area needs to be secured. The website is using Form Based Authentication and the users need to stay logged in when they are moved back and forth from the https zone. I know how to enable SSL for a new web application / site collection but this isn't really an option for me as the website is already online and we don't want the whole thing to be secured. I am comfortable with the development of the webparts involved (payment module, shopping cart, etc.) but I can't really figure out how to create only certain https pages when the site collection is created. Can you have features that deploy pages that are secured? If so, how? Can you have a zone where SSL is enabled but where the users are redirected to and from without losing their authentication (FBA)? Thanks!

• Programmatically automating a web login

  I am trying to create a C# Winforms application that will automatically log me into a site and download data. Specifically, I want to have my application automatically log into my online banking site, log me in, and download my transaction history. I can do this manually by logging in through a web browser and downloading it. I am trying to automate this. I know I probably need to use HttpWebRequest and HttpWebResponse. Does anyone have an example of this or a framework of the steps I need to take to accomplish this? Keep in mind it will be secure site (https) and I will somehow have to collect session information and retain the session information for the duration of the session. Any thoughts?

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!)   Given a set of databases how can one you get information on a book with given price first (which consist of the average of a hidden list of prices coming from different web site) and followed by an optional second option that shows the list of the different web site with their page?   I have two sites - both are my projects. On site two, I need to check if the user is logged in on site one. I suppose to do this I should just create a script that puts a cookie into the body of an iframe and then read the iframe contents on site two. But I can't. • Ad/Banner Management/Rotation for Ruby on Rails?

  Hi, I have a niche site that I'd like to sell banners for directly, rather than going through adsense. I need a system to manage the whole process: displaying ads and an administrative interface to manage them. It doesn't have to be anything terribly fancy, although open source is greatly preferred so that I can grow the system as needs be. Since the site itself is in Rails, I would prefer something for that environment. Googling turns up bunches of them in PHP, but the results are a bit polluted and I didn't have any luck finding one that was done in/for Rails. If I don't find one, I suppose I'll see what I can do to hack together something and release it myself under an open license. • Optimize loading an XAP file with an asp.net website

  I've been developing a game using Silverlight 4 and silversprite (http://silversprite.codeplex.com/) This game is HEAVILY content dependent, using a lot of audio and images. My content folder is around 90 mbs worth of stuff. And because of that, my XAP file is around 60 MB, and takes 5 minutes to download from the website before any user can start playing. I am using Visual Web Developer 2010 to create my site and load the XAP. Is there a way where I can take content out of my XAP and put it in my ASP.net site project? Or perhaps upload my content files to the site's storage? This would make my XAP file much quicker to download. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks!

  I'm running the Django 1.2 development server and I get these Broken Pipe error messages whenever I load a page from it with Chrome or Safari. My co-worker is getting the error as well when he loads a page from his dev server. We don't have these errors when using Opera or Firefox.
