• How to add the ImageMagick install to my path on Ubuntu

  I have had been on a roller coaster trying to get ImageMagick to work on my Ubuntu slice. I Whenever I try to upload an image I get the following error: /tmp/stream.1170.0 is not recognized by the 'identify' command. If I type 'which identify' I get: /usr/local/bin/identify If I run '/usr/local/bin/identify' or just 'identify', I get the following error: /usr/local/bin/identify: error while loading shared libraries: libMagickCore.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory If I run '/usr/bin/identify', ImageMagick is run just fine. How can I set my path to where when Paperclip runs the identify command, it points to /usr/bin/identify? Thanks. p.s. I have tried adding this to paperclip.rb: Paperclip.options[:command_path] = '/usr/bin' and Paperclip.options[:command_path] = '/usr/local/bin'

• pyplot: really slow creating heatmaps

  I have a loop that executes the body about 200 times. In each loop iteration, it does a sophisticated calculation, and then as debugging, I wish to produce a heatmap of a NxM matrix. But, generating this heatmap is unbearably slow and significantly slow downs an already slow algorithm. My code is along the lines: import numpy import matplotlib.pyplot as plt for i in range(200): matrix = complex_calculation() plt.set_cmap("gray") plt.imshow(matrix) plt.savefig("frame{0}.png".format(i)) The matrix, from numpy, is not huge --- 300 x 600 of doubles. Even if I do not save the figure and instead update an on-screen plot, it's even slower. Surely I must be abusing pyplot. (Matlab can do this, no problem.) How do I speed this up?

  Consider the following example: I want to read a file using ido from the minibuffer, but merge in all of the directories I use often. I can't just execute (ido-find-file) (ido-merge-work-directories) Because the second sexp will only execute after the user is finished selecting the file. The question then is: what is the best/cleanest way to execute commands in the minibuffer's command loop? The only way I know to do this is to bind my desired command to a key sequence, and add that sequence to unread-command-events so the key runs once we enter the minibuffer command loop: (setq unread-command-events (append (listify-key-sequence (kbd "M-s")) unread-command-events)) ; std key-binding for ido-merge-work-directories (ido-find-file) But that is very hacky, and I would like to know if there is a better solution.   I'm having difficulty using reinterpret_cast. Before I show you my code I'll let you know what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to get a filename from a vector full of data being used by a MIPS I processor I designed. Basically what I do is compile a binary from a test program for my processor, dump all the hex's from the binary into a vector in my c++ program, convert all of those hex's to decimal integers and store them in a DataMemory vector which is the data memory unit for my processor. I also have instruction memory. So When my processor runs a SYSCALL instruction such as "Open File" my C++ operating system emulator receives a pointer to the beginning of the filename in my data memory. So keep in mind that data memory is full of ints, strings, globals, locals, all sorts of stuff. When I'm told where the filename starts I do the following: Convert the whole decimal integer element that is being pointed to to its ASCII character representation, and then search from left to right to see if the string terminates, if not then just load each character consecutively into a "filename" string. Do this until termination of the string in memory and then store filename in a table. My difficulty is generating filename from my memory. • Postfix sendmail -bs shows no output - permissions?

  When I run the sendmail -bs command as root, I get the expected output: $ sudo sendmail -bs 220 mydomain.com ESMTP Postfix ehlo localhost 250-mydomain.com 250-PIPELINING 250-SIZE 15728640 250-ETRN 250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES 250-8BITMIME 250 DSN But when I run the same command without sudo, I get no output at all and sendmail doesn't respond to any commands: $ sendmail -bs ehlo localhost quit wtf ^C $ How can I configure Postfix so that sendmail works for every user (or at least for some specific users)? I need this because SwiftMailer for PHP uses sendmail -bs for sending mails and fails when it can't find any output.

  According to the Unicorn docs, there are different binaries for Rails apps and other Rack apps: non-Rails Rack applications In APP_ROOT, run: unicorn for Rails applications (should work for all 1.2 or later versions) In RAILS_ROOT, run: unicorn_rails They seem to also take the same command-line parameters. But Rails is built on top of rack, so I don't understand why this dichotomy is required. Is there any reason you can't just use unicorn for Rails apps?

  This is a homework problem. I'm already 5 days late and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.. this is my 1st semester in Java and my first post on this site Here is the assignment.. Create a class called Calendar. The class should contain a variable called events that is a String array. The array should be created to hold 5 elements. Use a constant value to specify the array size. Do not hard code the array size. Initialize the array in the class constructor so that each element contains the string “ – No event planned – “. The class should contain a method called CreateEvent. This method should accept a String argument that contains a one-word user event and an integer argument that represents the day of the week. Monday should be represented by the number 1 and Friday should be represented by the number 5. Populate the events array with the event info passed into the method. Although the user will input one-word events, each event string should prepend the following string to each event: event_dayAppoinment: (where event_day is the day of the week) For example, if the user enters 1 and “doctor” , the first array element should read: Monday Appointment: doctor If the user enters 2 and “PTA” , the second array element should read: Tuesday Appointment: PTA Write a driver program (in a separate class) that creates and calls your Calendar class. Then use a loop to gather user input. Ask for the day (as an integer) and then ask for the event (as a one word string). Pass the integer and string to the Calendar object’s CreateEvent method. The user should be able enter 0 – 5 events. If the user enters -1, the loop should exit and your application should print out all the events in a tabular format. Your program should not allow the user to enter invalid values for the day of the week. Any input other than 1 – 5 or -1 for the day of the week would be considered invalid. Notes: When obtaining an integer from the user, you will need to use the nextInt() method on your Scanner object. • How do I get windows 7 to go full screen in boot camp?

  I'm running Windows 7 on an iMac using Bootcamp. At the native resolution of 1290x1200, the desktop fills the entire screen, but when I run games at a lower resolution or reduce the suze of the desktop the visible area is reduced and a large black border surrounds the display. I want to run 1024x768 full screen, not letterboxed. Is there a way to do this? I suspect a problem with the drivers.

• Is there any way to code breakpoints/debugging?

  I've been wondering this for a while - is there a way to code/program breakpoints...? Conditionally? For example, can I specify something like - "when this variable becomes this value, break and open the debugger"? (Would be quite useful, especially in long loops when you want to debug loop execution of a late loop value.) I suppose this may be IDE-specific since debugging is implemented differently in different IDEs... I'd be interested to know how to do this in any IDE, but specifically in Eclipse and Visual Studio.

• Anyone else experiencing high rates of Linux server crashes during a leap second day?

  POSTMORTEM Anticlimax: only thing that died was my VPN (openvpn) link to the cluster, so there was an exciting few seconds while it re-established. Everything else was fine. Starting back ntp everywhere. If you look at Marco's blog at http://my.opera.com/marcomarongiu/blog/2012/06/01/an-humble-attempt-to-work-around-the-leap-second - he has a solution for phasing the time change over 24 hours using ntpd -x to avoid the 1 second skip. Give that a go if it matters to you. For the systems I run, the jump isn't a problem. Just today, Sat June 30th - starting soon after the start of the day GMT. We've had a handful of blades in different datacentres as managed by different teams all go dark - not responding to pings, screen blank. They're all running Debian Squeeze - with everything from stock kernel to custom 3.2.21 builds. Most are Dell M610 blades, but I've also just lost a Dell R510 and other departments have lost machines from other vendors too. There was also an older IBM x3550 which crashed and which I thought might be unrelated, but now I'm wondering. The one crash which I did get a screen dump from said: [3161000.864001] BUG: spinlock lockup on CPU#1, ntpd/3358 [3161000.864001] lock: ffff88083fc0d740, .magic: dead4ead, .owner: imapd/24737, .owner_cpu: 0 Unfortunately the blades all supposedly had kdump configured, but they died so hard that kdump didn't trigger - and they had console blanking turned on. I've disabled console blanking now, so fingers crossed I'll have more information after the next crash. Just want to know if it's a common thread or "just us". It's really odd that they're different units in different datacentres bought at different times and run by different admins (I run the FastMail.FM ones)... and now even different vendor hardware. Most of the machines which crashed had been up for weeks/months and were running 3.1 or 3.2 series kernels. The most recent crash was a machine which had only been up about 6 hours running 3.2.21. THE WORKAROUND Ok people, here's how I worked around it. disabled ntp: /etc/init.d/ntp stop created http://linux.brong.fastmail.fm/2012-06-30/fixtime.pl (code stolen from Marco, see blog posts in comments) ran fixtime.pl without an argument to see that there was a leap second set ran fixtime.pl with an argument to remove the leap second NOTE: depends on adjtimex. I've put a copy of the squeeze adjtimex binary at http://linux.brong.fastmail.fm/2012-06-30/adjtimex - it will run without dependencies on a squeeze 64 bit system. If you put it in the same directory as fixtime.pl, it will be used if the system one isn't present. Obviously if you don't have squeeze 64 bit... find your own. I'm going to start ntp again tomorrow. As an anonymous user suggested - an alternative to running adjtimex is to just set the time yourself, which will presumably also clear the leapsecond counter.

• Letting a new PHP page know a new POST value is an Array?

  I have a page that creates an associative array, then passes it as a hidden value to a new PHP page. I have a foreach loop waiting to iterate through it but it coughs up an "invalid argument" error, as if the page doesn't know the value it's working with is an array (Despite "print" showing simply "Array"). This is essentially what I have: //Hidden input to be passed to the next page print "<input type=\"hidden\" name=\"price_list\" value=\"$item_list\"> //Code on the second page for the foreach loop extract($_POST); foreach($price_list as $name=>$price) { ... } But I am simply given "Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/cut/mg299/public_html/PHP/invoice.php on line 17". The array works fine, as I can iterate on the previous page, and other values are parsed fine to this second page. Do I need to 'reinitialise' this array value?

• Eclipse RCP Application Fails to launch second time

  I have an Eclipse RCP application that will launch properly after a clean install (right after build). The issue is that if I try to launch the application a second time the application throws an exception. I have narrowed the issue down to this file being created after the first run: ~install_dir/configuration/org.eclipse.osgi/.state Has anyone run into a similar issue where the .state file prevents the application from being launched anytime after that first run? I'm hesitant to look at the exception as this does not happen the first time, so I suspect org.eclipse.osgi is more to blame. The details of the exception are: "Error creating bean with name 'luceneRawQueryComposer' defined in class path resource [spring/dataaccess/daoCMClient.xml]: Cannot resolve reference to bean 'indexUtility' while setting bean property 'indexUtility'; NoSuchBeanDefinitionException

• ImageMagick and Grails not working

  I'm trying to have ImageMagick run from grails to convert some images when I run the command to make an image nothing happens. I get no errors, no information returned nothing at all. I've tried running other commands like touch and ps ux just to see if they work and they all work fine. It just seems like the imagemagick commands are getting lost and I''m not sure what to do. Here is the code I've been working with. String command = CH.config.ImageMagickPath + "/convert -size 40x20 xc:red xc:blue -append -rotate 90 append_rotate.gif" println command command.execute() CH.config.ImageMagickPath is set up to where imagemagick/bin is. I've taken what is shown in println command and run it in a terminal and it works fine. Is there any reason why I can't get IM to work from grails?

But I want that if in my system login page is already running and is minimized then if i run the jar once again then it will not start as a new application rather it should maximize the earlier login page. • Junit Parameterized tests together with Powermock - how!?

  Hi! I've been trying to figure out how to run parameterized tests in Junit4 together with PowerMock. The problem is that to use PowerMock you need to decorate your test class with @RunWith(PowerMock.class) and to use parameterized tests you have to decorate with @RunWith(Parameterized.class) From what I can see they seem mutually excluded!? Is this true? Is there any way around this? I've tried to create a parameterized class within a class running with PowerMock; something like this: @RunWith(PowerMock.class) class MyTestClass { @RunWith(Parameterized.class) class ParamTestClass { // Yadayada } } But unfortunately this doesn't do much good... The ParamTestClass still doesn't run with PowerMock support (not that surprisingly maybe)... And I've kind of run out of ideas so any help is greatly appreciated!

  I set a new scheduled task to start "when my computer starts". I assigned an Administrator user to run the task. This is an executable that is supposed to run indefinitely in the background. The problem is, that if the Administrator logs in and then logs off, the task stops running. Is there a solution for this? UPDATE: this was caused because the task running was in java. I know you can run the windows 2008 setup, and exit to command prompt, but I would like there to just be a menu that will kick off whichever script needed. What would be the best way to do this?
