  I just read the Professional C# 4 and .NET 4 from wrox, wrote by Christian Nagel, Bill Evjen, Jay Glynn, Karli Watson and Morgan Skinner. This is a complete book in whats in .NET 4 as well as a great book for anybody jumping in .NET. They did a great job including all the important parts of .NET as well as the new version 4. As I was reading, my first impression was how far .NET has gone since version 1.0, the different platforms including WPF, Silverlight, ASP.NET ADO.NET, LINQ and PLINQ now...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Is there a Content Management System that allows multiple & independent blogs to be running on one domain?

  Hello Webmasters, I am a Wordpress fan, and I'm now building a new site and I'm not sure which CMS can achieve what I'm trying to do. I am building a food blog network for a bunch of cities in the US, and I want to my city pages to be independently running blogs themselves. So basically... Home Page - Its own blog with its own users, talking about Food in general Dallas Page (child of home page) - Its own blog with its own users Chicago Page ..... so on and so forth. The web layout and design will be all the same, but just trying to achieve 25~50 independent blogs on one domain. How can I achieve this? I'm hoping that I don't have to install Wordpress into as many subdomains that I create... Thank you for your help in advance. -RP

• Customizing Google Sites look and feel

  I find the site layout and theming capabilities in Google Sites (found in the Manage Site screen) very limited; for instance, I do not seem to be able to place the horizontal navigation buttons directly to the right of the logo and to customize their style, as well as to use the standard trick of making a horizontally stretchable background image of a box with rounded corners by splitting it into three parts and replicating the middle one, etc. Am I missing something? Are there any advanced settings available? Thanks.

• Pressing p in dash results in weird B

  Today I tried to open Skype in my dash and discovered that my "p" key does not work properly. Instead of p I get B. In every other application the key works properly. When I copy the text "skyBe" from dash into another application it sais "skype". I tried every other character and they seem fine, it's only the "p" key. I think that the problem is dash. Anyone else has the same problem? Here is an image. I enter "skype" and get this: What causes this problem and how can I fix it? • Microsoft StyleCop is now Open Source

  I have previously talked about Microsoft StyleCop. For those that might not know about it, StyleCop is a source analysis tool (different from the static analysis that FxCop performs) that analyzes the source code directly. As a result, it focuses on more design (or style) issues such as layout, readability and documentation. In an interesting move (and one that I am happy to see), Microsoft has decided to make StyleCop an open source project (under the MS-PL license) available on CodePlex. (The project site isn’t up  yet, but should be in the next few weeks.) This will give the development community the opportunity to help contribute to the project, expanding support to other languages (currently it only supports C#), adding features, and fixing bugs. Shortly after the CodePlex site is up, StyleCop 4.4 will be released which includes support for C# 4.0 as well as a large number of bug fixes and other improvements. • Prewritten App for Used Car Dealer?

  Is there somewhere I can find a prewritten WebApp (with database) for a used car dealer? The application would need to support the following: Easy setup in a low cost Shared or Cloud Host Give potential customers easy way to browse current inventory (cars on lot) with suggested prices Give dealership easy way to login and update inventory (cars on lot) and suggested prices Give potential customers easy way to send the dealership an inquiry about a specific vehicle on the lot with CAPTCHA style SPAM protection I prefer ASP.NET MVC and Microsoft SQL Server, but I might consider other technologies such as WebForms and LightSwitch (HTML5). I am reasonably comfortable with MVC and WebForms, but I really don't want to waste a bunch of time writing an application that might already exist. I did find a few interesting templates via Bing that seem to control CSS and Layout, but I'm not sure if they contain any business logic or if they would integrate well into an MVC App.

• Are there any guidelines for laying out screen "real estate?"

  I'm wondering if there is any information about creating a decent page layout so that your website will appeal to users of all resolutions. For example, the optimal width for pages. It seems like on my resolution, most websites have their content centered and covers about 80% of the page, which is easy on the eyes. Or maybe the height of the website's logo/header -- some sites I stumble upon have a huge logo with links or navigation under it, making it so that I need to scroll down to see the actual content, like articles or images (these sites don't keep me for very long). I understand that every user is different and may have browser extensions, page zoom or may be running some ancient system that displays in 640x480. I'm not looking for a "best" solution, but rather, some guidelines about designing to accommodate different resolutions. Basically, how can I make sure that I don't design a page where a paragraph might display in several easy-to-read lines on my resolution, but it turns into a single line on a 1920x1080 resolution and makes it hard for the user to follow?

• Mass Metadata Updates with Folders

  With the release of WebCenter Content PS5, a new folder architecture called 'Framework Folders' was introduced.  This is meant to replace the folder architecture of 'Folders_g'.  While the concepts of a folder structure and access to those folders through Desktop Integration Suite remain the same, the underlying architecture of the component has been completely rewritten.  One of the main goals of the new folders is to scale better at large volumes and remove the limitations of 1000 content items or sub-folders within a folder.  Along with the new architecture, it has a new look and a few additional features have been added.  One of those features are Query Folders.  These are folders that are populated simply by a query rather then literally putting items within the folders.  This is something that the Library has provided, but it always took an administrator to define them through the Web Layout Editor.  Now users can quickly define query folders anywhere within the standard folder hierarchy. • Grant a user permissions on www-data owned /var/www

  I have a simple web server setup for some websites, with a layout something like: site1: /var/www/site1/public_html/ site2: /var/www/site2/public_html/ I have previously used the root user to manage files, and then given them back to www-data when I was done (WordPress sites, needed for WP Uploads to work). This probably isn't the best way. I'm trying to find a way to create another user (lets call it user1) that has permission to edit files in site1, but not site2, and doesn't stop the files being 'owned' by www-data. Is there any way for me to do this?

• Architecture of interaction modes ("paint tools") for a 3D paint program

  We are developing a Qt-based application to navigate through and paint on a volume treated as a 3D pixel graphic. The layout of the app consists of three orthogonal slice views on which the user may paint stuff like dots, circles etc. and also erase already painted pixels. Think of a 3D Gimp or MS Paint. How would you design the the architecture for the different interaction modes (i.e. paint tools)? My idea is: use the MVC pattern have a separate controler for every interaction mode install an event filter on all three slice views to collect all incoming user interaction events (mouse, keyboard) redirect the events to the currently active interaction controler I would appreciate critical comments on that idea.

  Below are the release notes from this week's deployment. Improvements and Bug Fixes Updated the Source browsing to fixed width and full browser height. The source browsing experience now defaults to the fixed width layout. But, if you really want to take advantage of that 30" monitor you have on your desk, you can expand the source to fill the browser window. Just click on the little plus icon in the upper right. • Switch Gmail Icons Back to Text Labels

  If Gmail’s icon-based buttons annoy you, it’s now possible to switch them back to the old text labels with a simple settings toggle. At MakeUseOf they highlight the new option in Gmail and how you can switch back to the old button layout: So how do you make that happen? All you have to do is click on the cog button, choose “Settings”, and go to the the General tab. Scroll down to find the “Button labels” setting, and change it from icons to text. • Slideshows in elastic or fluid layouts?

  Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks! (BTW, I've posted here because this was more of a "what's the best option" question than a "How do I program that?" question. If you think it would be more appropriate on SO, please move it there.)

• Reuseable Platform For Custom Board Game

  Is there a generic platform to allow me to customize the rules to a board game. The board game uses a square grid, similar to Checkers or Chess. I was hoping to take some of the work out of creating this computer opponent, by reusing what is already written. I would think that there would be a pre-written routine for deciding which moves would lead to the best outcome, and all that I would need to program is the pieces, legal moves, what layout constitutes a win/lose or draw, and perhaps some kind of scoring for value of pieces. I have seen chess programs that appear to use a recursive routine, so they think anywhere from 2 to 20 moves ahead to create varying degrees of difficulty. I have noticed this on chess.com. The game I am programming will not be as complex. Is there a platform designed to be re-used for different grid/piece based games. JavaScript would be preferable, but Java or Perl would be acceptable.

• Getting rid of getting stuck often [closed]

  I have been working with C# and .NET for around 2-3 years. But, still i get stuck too often. My project includes few simple websites(asp.net) in the early parts and then a desktop application for cotton transaction management(wpf). And right now, I am building a price compare website (asp.net MVC). Along the lines, I have read quite few books on C# and .NET, but still I get stuck very often. What pisses me is that the problems I get stuck in aren't very typical or hard. You can get a better idea by visiting my questions page on SO. After looking at my question lists, do you also feel that my basis or knowledge as a programmer are weak ? If so, How can i find a remedy to this problem ? And How can I stop getting stuck too often for simpler problems.

• X technology is dead

  Every so often, technology pundits (i.e. people not involved in the game, but who like commenting about it) throw out big controversial statements (typically to increase their readership), with a common one being that "Technology/platform X is dead". My former colleague (who I guess is now my distant colleague) uses the same trick with his blog post: "iPhone 4 is dead". But, his motivation is to set the record straight (and I believe him) by sharing his opinion on recent commentary around Silverlight, WPF etc. I enjoyed his post and the comments, so I hope you do too :-) Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

• Script at Startup

  I'm using 10.10 and I need to run a script in order to get a windows-like international keyboard layout - basically, it changes how dead keys work. (Original script from this page http://t.tam.atbh.us/en/win-us-intl-4-linux/ ) Since I can't seem to manage to get it going from boot, I have to run a custom script to launch any application. The script: export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim setxkbmap us intl xmodmap -e 'keycode 48 = dead_acute dead_diaeresis dead_acute dead_diaeresis acute diaeresis' application_name So if I put abiword in the application_name, it runs abiword respecting the keyboard script. Ideally, the original script would start at boot and then any applications I use would function with it - just like what happens if I run it first in Terminal (without the app_name line) and then run apps from it. I tried to make the script run from boot by adding it to /etc/rc.local but to no avail. Tried to add it to init.d but that also didn't work. If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful.

• Good book or tutorial for learning how to apply integration methods

  I'm looking to animate a graph layout using edges as springs and nodes as weights ( a node with more links will have a bigger weight ). I'm not capable of wrapping my head around the usage of mathematical and physics relations in my application. As far as i read, Runge Kutta 4 ( preferably ) or Verlet will be a good choice, but i have problems with understanding how they really work, and what physics equations should i apply. If i can't understand them, i can't use them. I'm looking for a book or a tutorial which describe the things that i need.

• How does one handle an incorrect resource file?

  I'm starting the parser that will handle one of the key features of my app and realizing exactly who easy it would be for me to screw up a resource file that is provided to the application. For example, a simple resource that I provide to my app is a JSON file that contains an entity layout (name, fascia, location etc...). It would be easy for me to leave out the name of the entity or misspell the JSON key. Obviously catastrophic failures during parsing are to be handled in a try/catch, but how would subtle failures (such as a dyslexic spelling of name) be handled?

• Cannot boot Ubuntu 12.04 on Lenovo V570 fresh install

  I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 64 bit 12.04 (from the DVD) to a Lenovo V570 laptop. I did a dual boot install with Windows 7. I used the boot layout leftover from Linux Mint 12 (which was working). The installation finished with what seemed to be a success. However, when rebooting, I get this error: GRUB: “invalid arch independent ELF magic” after install on SSD Then I did grub-install and update-grub (I didn't install grub-efi, so maybe this is the problem?) Then I got "unknown filesystem error" at the grub prompt. Desperately, I gave /boot the bootable flag. Then on a reboot,... I got some strange screen with the letters PXE. It flashed momentarily, too fast to read, and then the computer jumped to a screen which asked me from which drive was the boot desired to be. As of now, I have no idea what I am doing.

• WWDC 2012 announced features on iOS 5?

  I am relatively new to iOS development, so after watching a bunch of WWDC videos announcing new awesome features for the iPhone SDK, I still got a few questions regarding their support for older devices. Specifically: Do the new compiler features (such as literals support, auto-synthesize, etc) require iOS 6 on the target device, or can the new style code be deployed to iOS 5 devices? Auto-layout for iOS, same question. Will it only be supported on iOS 6, or 5 as well? If it's 6 only, what kind of fallback are we expected to implement? Would really appreciate if someone could clarify this for me, as I'm thinking about rewriting my older unfinished project and I would love to use some of that improved SDK functionality.
