• Linq to SQL Strange SQL Translation

  I have a simple query that is generating some odd SQL translations, which is blowing up my code when the object is saturated. from x in DataContext.MyEntities select new { IsTypeCDA = x.EntityType == "CDA" //x.EntityType is a string and EntityType.CDA is a const string... } I would expect this query should translate to: SELECT (CASE WHEN [t0].[EntityType] = @p1 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as [IsTypeCDA] ... Instead I get this : SELECT (CASE WHEN @p1 = [t0].[EntityType] THEN 1 WHEN NOT (@p1 = [t0].[EntityType]) THEN 0 ELSE NULL END) AS [IsTypeCDA] ... Since I'm saturating a POCO where IsTypeCDA is a bool, it blows up stating I can't assign null to bool. Any thoughts? Edit: fixed the property names so they make sense...

• Is it possible to use JavaScript to submit an unnamed form from outside an iFrame?

  I know that may sound silly, but I'm trying to submit a form on a page inside an iFrame, from the parent site. • 12.04 LTS won't install from CD

  I've been trying to install 12.04 LTS onto a Dell with a PIII from CD. Booting from the CD the install gets through the "Who are you" process, begins copying files. The progress bar gets as far as the last period in "Copying files...". The box clears, and an error box comes up "The installer has encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigae the problem or try installing again." When I try to install from this desktop session, the install gets to the same point, the copying files box closes, and then just stops. The pointer is busy, the cd drive spins up occaisonally with no data transfer, no hard drive activity. When I boot from the CD and access the disk boot menu, the disk checks good, memory checks good ( I upgraded the original memory to 512 mb). I also updated the bios to the newest from Dell. This is an older L866r, but should meet the requirements.

• Ad networks that will serve via HTTPS?

  I've built a website with 160K page views per month that serves every page over HTTPS. The recent FireSheep news will probably increase the adoption of "HTTPS everywhere" but it's been very hard to find ad networks and affiliates that will serve their content via HTTPS. I don't want to use these because I don't want my visitors to get "broken security" notification from their browsers (and of course, relevant ads would be a leak of private information). I'm tired of spending a ton of time signing up with ad networks and affiliates only to find out down the road that they don't support HTTPS (e.g. AdSense). Can anyone suggest any options or provide a pointer to a list of these somewhere?

• JFrame does not refresh after deleting an image

  Hi! I'm working for the first time with images in a JFrame, and I have some problems. I succeeded in putting an image on my JFrame, and now i want after 2 seconds to remove my image from the JFrame. But after 2 seconds, the image does not disappear, unless I resize the frame or i minimize and after that maximize the frame. Help me if you can. Thanks. • mouse and mousepad not working properly

  Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Samsung Q35 The mouse pad has stopped working, only the buttons work. The external mouse is also behaving very oddly, the mouse pointer works, but the button is not working properly, it has to be pressed many times or held down to select anything, and when anything that I select behaves as though the mouse is being clicked all the screen, settings will keep changing, the page will scroll, sliders will move up and down, tabs will toggle etc, so everything is unusable with the mouse, cannot even use the browser as it keeps scrolling the page up and down. I have tested the mouse on another computer, and it works fine. Please bear in mind that I am also a complete Linux novice, I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop for my kids, that is the limit of my experience.

  Hi all, I have a database with three tables, a household table, an adults table and a users table. The Household table contains two foreign keys, iAdult1ID and iAdult2ID. The Users table has a iUserID primary key and the Adult table has a corresponding iUserID foreign key. One of the columns in the Users table is strUsername, an e-mail address. I am trying to write a query that will allow me to search for an e-mail address for either adult that has a relation to the household. So I have two questions, assuming that all the values are not null, how can I do this? And two, in reality, iAdult2ID can be null, is it still possible to write a query to do this? • Parantheses around method invokation: why is the compiler complaining about assignment?

  I know why the following code doesn't compile: public class Main { public static void main(String args[]) { main((null)); // this is fine! (main(null)); // this is NOT! } } What I'm wondering is why my compiler (javac 1.6.0_17, Windows version) is complaining "The left hand side of an assignment must be a variable". I'd expect something like "Don't put parantheses around a method invokation, dummy!", instead. So why is the compiler making a totally unhelpful complaint about something that is blatantly irrelevant? Is this the result of an ambiguity in the grammar? A bug in the compiler? If it's the former, could you design a language such that a compiler would never be so off-base about a syntax error like this?

But the contents of the original and the read one are in a different format although when displayed in a web browser they are the same. The only way I can get it to work is if I null the member object out before reassigning the binding. • MySQL hangs if connection comes from outside the LAN

  I have a MySQL Server operating just fine if I access him from his local LAN (192.168.100.0/24). If I try to access hin from another LAN (192.168.113.0/24 in this case) it hangs for a really long time before delivering the result. SHOW PROCESSLIST; shows this process in Sleep, State empty. • Multiple Foriegn Keys from One Table linking to single Primary Key in second Table

  Hi all, I have a database with three tables, a household table, an adults table and a users table. The Household table contains two foreign keys, iAdult1ID and iAdult2ID. The Users table has a iUserID primary key and the Adult table has a corresponding iUserID foreign key. One of the columns in the Users table is strUsername, an e-mail address. I am trying to write a query that will allow me to search for an e-mail address for either adult that has a relation to the household. So I have two questions, assuming that all the values are not null, how can I do this? And two, in reality, iAdult2ID can be null, is it still possible to write a query to do this? • Race condition for thread startup

  A similar question was asked here, but the answers generally all seem to relate to the lambda notation. I get a similar result without the lambda so I thought I'd ask for some clarification: Say I have something like this: for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) (new Thread(new ThreadStart(delegate() { Console.WriteLine("Thread " + i); }))).Start(); One would expect the following output: Thread 0 Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Now I realise that the threads aren't started in any particular order, so let's just assume that the above lines can come out in any order. But that is not what happens. What instead happens: Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 4 Thread 4 Thread 4 or something similar, which leads me to believe that rather than passing the value if i, it is passing the reference. (Which is weird, since an int is a value type). Doing something like this: for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) (new Thread(new ThreadStart(delegate() { int j = i; Console.WriteLine("Thread " + j); }))).Start(); does not help either, even though we have made a copy of i. I am assuming the reason is that it hasn't made a copy of i in time. Doing something like this: for (int i = 0; i < 5; i++) { (new Thread(new ThreadStart(delegate() { Console.WriteLine("Thread " + i); }))).Start(); Thread.Sleep(50); } seems to fix the problem, however it is extremely undesirable as we're wasting 50ms on each iteration, not to mention the fact that if the computer is heavily loaded then maybe 50ms may not be enough. Here is a sample with my current, specific problem: Thread t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(delgate() { threadLogic(param1, param2, param3, param4); })); t.Start(); param1 = param2 = param3 = param4 = null; with: void threadLogic(object param1, object param2, object param3, object param4) { // Do some stuff here... } I want threadLogic() to run in its own thread, however the above code gives a null reference exception. I assume this is because the values are set to null before the thread has had a chance to start. Again, putting a Thread.Sleep(100) works, but it is an awful solution from every aspect. What do you guys recommend for this particular type of race condition?

• Invalidating non-client areas

  I've a window which I draw a custom border/caption, in order to do that I handle WM_NCPAINT message. My captin has two backgrounds a brighter one when it is the active window, and a darker one when it is in the background. But under some circumstances, for example when the window loses/gain focus, my caption is not updated so I end with the wrong background. Until now I've handled WM_NCACTIVATE, and send a RedrawWindow(hwnd, NULL, NULL, RDW_FRAME|RDW_INVALIDATE), but this causes the whole window to repaint. Do you have any advice about this?

• File created using MODE_WORLD_READABLE not getting sent as attachment by email

  I created the SQLite DB using the following code: context.openOrCreateDatabase(dbName, Context.MODE_WORLD_READABLE, null); And tried to send it as attachment by email using the following code: Intent emailIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND) .setType("message/rfc822") .putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, Uri.fromFile(getDatabasePath(dbName))); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(emailIntent, null)); This opens the GMail compose activity with the attachment icon. But the recipient did not receive the attachment. This has been asked before. But it looks like there is no solution other than to copy the db file to SD card. My question then is: What is the use of the MODE_WORLD_READABLE flag if another app like GMail is unable to read the file?
