  • Between-request Garbage Collection using Passenger

    - by raphaelcm
We're using Rails 3.0.7 and REE 1.8.7. Long-term, we will be upgrading, but at the moment it's not feasible. Following the advice of several blog posts, we've been tuning our GC, and have settings that work pretty well. But we would really like to run GC outside of the request-response cycle. I've tried patching Passenger per this post, and using the code supplied in this SO question. In both cases, GC does indeed happen between requests. However, every time the between-request GC happens, I see a bunch of this: MONGODB [INFO] Connecting... MONGODB admin['$cmd'].find({:ismaster=>1}).limit(-1) MONGODB admin['$cmd'].find({:ismaster=>1}).limit(-1) MONGODB admin['$cmd'].find({:ismaster=>1}).limit(-1) Starting the New Relic Agent. Basically, GC.start is re-loading the app for some reason. Because of this, between-request GC is much slower than inline GC. Is there a way around this? I would love to have snappy, between-request GC if possible. Thanks.

  • Does MySQL allow two primary keys on one table?

    - by Bharanikumar
CREATE TABLE Orders -> ( -> ID SMALLINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, -> ModelID SMALLINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, -> Descrip VARCHAR(40), -> PRIMARY KEY (ID, ModelID) -> ); Basically, this appears to me to be creating two primary key on one table. Is that correct? I thought that we could create a number of unique keys in one table, but only one primary key. How is it that my system is allowing the creation of multiple primary keys? Please advise: what are the rules governing this?

  • node.js - strange behavior of coffeescript compiler

    - by JimBob
I noticed an unexplainable behavior of the coffeescript compiler for me :) For example: getImage: (req, res) => realty_id = req.query.id if (realty_id?) Result ImageController.prototype.getImage = function(req, res) { var realty_id, _this = this; realty_id = req.query.id; if ((realty_id != null) But actually the last line should be: if ((typeof realty_id !== "undefined" && realty_id !== null)) When I comment out "realty_id = req.query.id" it works well. Has anyone a explanation for that?

  • Tooltip Support For ASP.NET Image Controls v2010 vol 1

Tooltip property has been added to DevExpress ASP.NET image controls! Starting with DXperience v2010.1, all DevExpress ASP.NET image controls like the ASPxImage have a new property called: Tooltip. Whats a tooltip? Wikipedia defines it as: The tooltip is a common graphical user interface element. It is used in conjunction with a cursor, usually a mouse pointer. The user hovers the cursor over an item, without clicking it, and a tooltip may appear a small "hover box" with information...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Prevent duplicate rows with all non-unique columns (only with MySQL)?

    - by letseatfood
Ho do I prevent a duplicate row from being created in a table with two columns, neither of which are unique? And can this be done using MySQL only, or does it require checks with my PHP script? Here is the CREATE query for the table in question (two other tables exist, users and roles): CREATE TABLE users_roles ( user_id INT(100) NOT NULL, role_id INT(100) NOT NULL, FOREIGN KEY (user_id) REFERENCES users(user_id), FOREIGN KEY (role_id) REFERENCES roles(role_id) ) ENGINE = INNODB; I would like the following query, if executed more than once, to throw an error: INSERT INTO users_roles (user_id, role_id) VALUES (1, 2); Please do not recommend bitmasks as an answer. Thanks!

  • MSMQ empty object on message body

    - by Owen
    Ok, so I'm very VERY new to MSMQ and I'm already confused. I have created a private queue and added a few messages to it, all good so far. BUT when I retrieve the messages back from the queue the message body contains a empty object of the type I added. By this I don't mean that the body is null, it does have a reference to a type of the object that I added, but it's not instantiated so all the properties are in their null or default state. This is the code I use to add to the queue: using (var mQueue = new MessageQueue(QueueName)) { var msg = new Message(observation) { Priority = MessagePriority.Normal, UseJournalQueue = true, AcknowledgeType = AcknowledgeTypes.FullReceive, }; mQueue.Send(msg); } And this is the code that dequeues the messages: using (var mQueue = new MessageQueue(QueueName)) { mQueue.MessageReadPropertyFilter.SetAll(); ((XmlMessageFormatter)mQueue.Formatter).TargetTypes = new[] { typeof(Observation) }; var msg = mQueue.Receive(new TimeSpan(0, 0, 5)); var observation = (Observation)msg.Body; return observation; }

  • Why do Java and C# not have implicit conversions to boolean?

    - by Shaun
Since I started Java it's been very aggravating for me that it doesn't support implicit conversions from numeric types to booleans, so you can't do things like: if (flags & 0x80) { ... } instead you have to go through this lunacy: if ((flags & 0x80) != 0) { ... } It's the same with null and objects. Every other C-like language I know including JavaScript allows it, so I thought Java was just moronic, but I've just discovered that C# is the same (at least for numbers, don't know about null/objects): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c8f5xwh7(VS.71).aspx Microsoft changed it on purpose from C++, so why? Clearly I'm missing something. Why change (what I thought was) the most natural thing in the world to make it longer to type? What on Earth is wrong with it?

  • Unit Testing: hard dependency MessageBox.Show()

    - by Sean B
What ways can the SampleConfirmationDialog be unit tested? The SampleConfirmationDialog would be exercised via acceptance tests, however how could we unit test it, seeing as MessageBox is not abstract and no matching interface? public interface IConfirmationDialog { /// <summary> /// Confirms the dialog with the user /// </summary> /// <returns>True if confirmed, false if not, null if cancelled</returns> bool? • WFP Validation & IDataErrorInfo

    - by Jefim
A note - the classes I have are EntityObject classes! I have the following class: public class Foo { public Bar Bar { get; set; } } public class Bar : IDataErrorInfo { public string Name { get; set; } #region IDataErrorInfo Members string IDataErrorInfo.Error { get { return null; } } string IDataErrorInfo.this[string columnName] { get { if (columnName == "Name") { return "Hello error!"; } Console.WriteLine("Validate: " + columnName); return null; } } #endregion } XAML goes as follows: <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" DataContext="{Binding Foo.Bar}"> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Name, ValidatesOnDataErrors=true}"/> </StackPanel> I put a breakpoint and a Console.Writeline on the validation there - I get no breaks. The validation is not executed. Can anybody just press me against the place where my error lies?

I have the following which displays all the photos which are associated. How can I limit it to one per event? SELECT Photos.Photo_Id, Photos.Photo_Path, Photos.Event_Id, Events.Event_Title, Events.Event_StartDate, Events.Event_EndDate FROM Photos, Events WHERE Photos.Event_Id = Events.Event_Id AND Events.Event_EndDate < GETDATE() AND Events.Event_EndDate IS NOT NULL AND Events.Event_StartDate IS NOT NULL ORDER BY NEWID() Thanks Luke Stratton

  • Remove Item From Object SubList (LINQ)

    - by X3074861X
I have an object that looks like this : public class Consortium { public string Id { get; set; } [JsonConverter(typeof(EnumDescriptionConverter))] public SourceType Type { get; set; } public List<UserLibrary> Branches { get; set; } } Each Consortium has a list of UserLibrary's associated with it, and that class looks like this : public class UserLibrary { public string LibraryId { get; set; } public string RetailerId {get; set;} public string UserId { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public DateTime CreatedAt { get; set; } } I have a method which will allow the user to remove a library from one of their consortium (note: There may be many branches associated to the consortium). However, I'm only being supplied a LibraryId, so I'm forced to traverse their list of Consortium, find which one contains the given id, then iterate over the branches and remove the one that matches the id. Here is how I'm currently accomplishing this : // Get the current list of consortiums var user = _mediator.Send(new GetUserProfileCommand { UserProfileId = _principle.UserProfileId }); var userConsortia = user.SavedConsortia; // the consortium to remove the library from var branchToRemove = _libraryService.GetLibrary(id); var consortRemove = new UserConsortium(); foreach (var userConsortium in userConsortia) { if (userConsortium.Branches.FirstOrDefault(c => string.Equals(c.LibraryId, id, StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) != null) { consortRemove = userConsortium; } } // if the consortium id is null, something is f* if (consortRemove.Id == null) { return new JsonDotNetResult(HttpStatusCode.BadRequest); } // first remove the consortia userConsortia.Remove(consortRemove); // remove the branch from the consortium consortRemove.Branches.RemoveAll(ul => string.Equals(ul.LibraryId, id, StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)); // add it back in without the branch userConsortia.Add(consortRemove); Question : Is there a LINQ expression I'm missing here that can help me consolidate this logic, or is there a better way of doing this?

  • KeyNotFound Exception in CSsharp

    - by C Patton
I'm about ready to bang my head against the wall I have a class called Map which has a dictionary called tiles. class Map { public Dictionary<Location, Tile> tiles = new Dictionary<Location, Tile>(); public Size mapSize; public Map(Size size) { this.mapSize = size; } //etc... I fill this dictionary temporarily to test some things.. public void FillTemp(Dictionary<int, Item> itemInfo) { Random r = new Random(); for(int i =0; i < mapSize.Width; i++) { for(int j=0; j<mapSize.Height; j++) { Location temp = new Location(i, j, 0); int rint = r.Next(0, (itemInfo.Count - 1)); Tile t = new Tile(new Item(rint, rint)); tiles[temp] = t; } } } and in my main program code Map m = new Map(10, 10); m.FillTemp(iInfo); Tile t = m.GetTile(new Location(2, 2, 0)); //The problem line now, if I add a breakpoint in my code, I can clearly see that my instance (m) of the map class is filled with pairs via the function above, but when I try to access a value with the GetTile function: public Tile GetTile(Location location) { if(this.tiles.ContainsKey(location)) { return this.tiles[location]; } else { return null; } } it ALWAYS returns null. Again, if I view inside the Map object and find the Location key where x=2,y=2,z=0 , I clearly see the value being a Tile that FillTemp generated.. Why is it doing this? I've had no problems with a Dictionary such as this so far. I have no idea why it's returning null. and again, when debugging, I can CLEARLY see that the Map instance contains the Location key it says it does not... very frustrating. Any clues? Need any more info? Help would be greatly appreciated :)

  • Is it necessary to understand what's happening at the hardware level to be a good programmer?

    - by bev
I'm a self-taught programmer, just in case this question is answered in CS 101. I've learned and used lots of languages, mostly for my own personal use, but occasionally for professional stuff. It seems that I'm always running into the same wall when I run into trouble programming. For example, I just asked a question on another forum about how to handle a pointer-to-array that was returned by a function. Initially I'm thinking that I simply don't know the proper technique that the designers of C++ set up to handle the situation. But from the answers and discussions that follow I see that I don't really get what happens when something is 'returned'. How deep a level of understanding of the programming process must a good programmer achieve?

  • how to save state of dynamically created editTexts

    - by user922531
I'm stuck at how to save the state of my EditTexts on screen orientation. Currently if text is inputted into the EditTexts and the screen is orientated, the fields are wiped (as expected). I am already calling onSaveInstanceState and saving a String, but I have no clue on how to save the EditTexts which are created in code and then retrieve them and add them to the EditTexts when redrawing the activity. Snippet of my code: My main activity is as follows: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // get the multidim array b = getIntent().getBundleExtra("obj"); m = (Methods) b.getSerializable("Methods"); // method to draw the layout InitialiseUI(); // Restore UI state from the savedInstanceState. if (savedInstanceState != null) { String strValue = savedInstanceState.getString("light"); if (strValue != null) { FLight = strValue; } } try { mCamera = Camera.open(); if (FLight.equals("true")) { flashLight(); } } catch (Exception e) { Log.d(TAG, "Thrown exception onCreate() camera: " + e); } } // end onCreate /** Called when the back button is pressed. */ @Override public void onResume() { super.onResume(); try { mCamera = Camera.open(); if (FLight.equals("true")) { flashLight(); } } catch (Exception e) { Log.d(TAG, "Thrown exception onCreate() camera: " + e); } } // end onCreate /** saves data before leaving the screen */ @Override protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) { super.onSaveInstanceState(outState); outState.putString("light", FLight); } /** called when exiting / leaving the screen */ @Override protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); Log.d(TAG, "onPause()"); if (mCamera != null) { mCamera.stopPreview(); mCamera.release(); mCamera = null; } } /* * set up the UI elements - add click listeners to buttons used in * onCreate() and onConfigurationChanged() * * Set the editTexts fields to show the previous readings as Hints */ public void InitialiseUI() { Log.d(TAG, "Start of InitialiseUI, Main activity"); // get a reference to the TableLayout final TableLayout myTLreads = (TableLayout) findViewById(R.id.myTLreads); // Create arrays to hold the TVs and ETs final TextView[] myTextViews = new TextView[m.getNoRows()]; // create an empty array; final EditText[] myEditTexts = new EditText[m.getNoRows()]; // create an empty array; for(int i =0; i<=m.getNoRows()-1;i++ ){ TableRow tr=new TableRow(this); tr.setLayoutParams(new LayoutParams( LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); // create a new textview / editText final TextView rowTextView = new TextView(this); final EditText rowEditText = new EditText(this); // setWidth is needed otherwise my landscape layout is OFF rowEditText.setWidth(400); // this stops the keyboard taking up the whole screen in landscape layout rowEditText.setImeOptions(EditorInfo.IME_FLAG_NO_EXTRACT_UI); // add some padding to the right of the TV rowTextView.setPadding(0,0,10,0); // set colors to white rowTextView.setTextColor(Color.parseColor("#FFFFFF")); rowEditText.setTextColor(Color.parseColor("#FFFFFF")); // if readings already sent today set color to yellow if(m.getTransmit(i+1)==false){ rowEditText.setEnabled(false); rowEditText.setHintTextColor(Color.parseColor("#FFFF00")); } // set the text of the TV to the meter name rowTextView.setText(m.getMeterName(i+1)); // set the hint of the ET to the last submitted reading rowEditText.setHint(m.getLastReadString(i+1)); // add the textview to the linearlayout rowEditText.setInputType(InputType.TYPE_CLASS_PHONE);//InputType.TYPE_NUMBER_FLAG_DECIMAL); tr.addView(rowTextView); tr.addView(rowEditText); myTLreads.addView(tr); // add a reference to the textView myTextViews[i] = rowTextView; myEditTexts[i] = rowEditText; } final Button submit = (Button) findViewById(R.id.submitReadings); // add a click listener to the button try { submit.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { Log.d(TAG, "Submit button clicked, Main activity"); preSubmitCheck(m.getAccNo(), m.getPostCode(), myEditTexts); // method to do HTML getting and sending } }); } catch (Exception e) { Log.d(TAG, "Exceptions (submit button)" + e.toString()); } }// end of InitialiseUI I don't need to do anything with these values until a button is clicked. Would it be easier if they were a ListView, i'm guessing I would still have the problem of saving them and retrieving them on rotation. If it helps I have an object m which is a string[][] I could temporarily somehow store them in

  • How can I (is there a way to) convert an HRESULT into a system specific error message?

According to this, there's no way to convert a HRESULT error code into a Win32 error code. Therefore (at least to my understanding), my use of FormatMessage in order to generate error messages (i.e. std::wstring Exception::GetWideMessage() const { using std::tr1::shared_ptr; shared_ptr<void> buff; LPWSTR buffPtr; DWORD bufferLength = FormatMessageW( FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM | FORMAT_MESSAGE_ALLOCATE_BUFFER | FORMAT_MESSAGE_IGNORE_INSERTS, NULL, GetErrorCode(), 0, reinterpret_cast<LPWSTR>(&buffPtr), 0, NULL); buff.reset(buffPtr, LocalFreeHelper()); return std::wstring(buffPtr, bufferLength); } ) does not work for HRESULTs. How do I generate these kinds of system-specific error strings for HRESULTs?

  • PHP Based session variable not retaining value. Works on localhost, but not on server.

    - by Foo
I've been trying to debug this problem for many hours, but to no avail. I've been using PHP for many years, and got back into it after long hiatus, so I'm still a bit rusty. Anyways, my $_SESSION vars are not retaining their value for some reason that I can't figure out. The site worked on localhost perfectly, but uploading it to the server seemed to break it. First thing I checked was the PHP.ini server settings. Everything seems fine. In fact, my login system is session based and it works perfectly. So now that I know $_SESSIONS are working properly and retaining their value for my login, I'm presuming the server is setup and the problem is in my script. Here's a stripped version of the code that's causing a problem. $type, $order and $style are not being retained after they are set via a GET variable. The user clicks a link, which sets a variable via GET, and this variable is retained for the remainder of their session. Is there some problem with my logic that I'm not seeing? <?php require_once('includes/top.php'); //first line includes a call to session_start(); require_once('includes/db.php'); $type = filter_input(INPUT_GET, 't', FILTER_VALIDATE_INT); $order = filter_input(INPUT_GET, 'o', FILTER_VALIDATE_INT); $style = filter_input(INPUT_GET, 's', FILTER_VALIDATE_INT); /* According to documentation, filter_input returns a NULL when variables are undefined. So, if t, o, or s are not set via URL, $type, $order and $style will be NULL. */ print_r($_SESSION); /* All other sessions, such as the login session, etc. are displayed here. After the sessions are set below, they are displayed up here to... simply with no value. This leads me to believe the problem is with the code below, perhaps? */ // If $type is not null (meaning it WAS set via the get method above) // or it's false because the validation failed for some reason, // then set the session to the $type. I removed the false check for simplicity. // This code is being successfully executed, and the data is being stored... if(!is_null($type)) { $_SESSION['type'] = $type; } if(!is_null($order)) { $_SESSION['order'] = $order; } if(!is_null($style)) { $_SESSION['style'] = $style; } $smarty->display($template); ?> If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

  • Unwanted automated creation of new instances of an activity class

    - by Marko
I have an activity (called Sender) with the most basic UI, only a button that sends a message when clicked. In the onClickListener I only call this method: private void sendSMS(String msg) { PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, new Intent(this, Sender.class), 0); PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, myIntent, 0); SmsManager sms = SmsManager.getDefault(); sms.sendTextMessage("1477", null, msg, pi, null); } This works ok, the message is sent but every time a message is sent a new instance of Sender is started on top of the other. If I call sendSMS method three times, three new instances are started. I'm quite new to android so I need some help with this, I only want the same Sender to be on all the time
