• Problem in multi booting Ubuntu 12.04 with existing Windows XP, 7 and 8 in 500GB HDD with 5 Partitions

  Here's my case. I have 500GB HDD with 5 Partitions with XP, Windows7 and Windows8 RP in the first three. As per one of the instruction I've seen in this forum, I did shrink my 4th Partition to create a 30GB unallocated free space to install Ubuntu 12.04. But, when next I'm trying to boot the Ubuntu CD and choosing "Something Else", its only recognizing my 500GB HDD in whole as "/sda" and not reading the free 30GB space separately to install Ubuntu in it as suggested in the instruction mentioned in this forum. I've also tried to install in from within Windows7, by mounting the Ubuntu ISO file and using the .exe file and instruction thereupon (choosing free drive, user name, installation size, etc.), but that also failed after the PC restarted to continue the installation, showing as error for file extension, partition something error. One thing to be noted that the PC I'm trying to install Ubuntu in it is my Home PC and doesn't have any internet connection. Hence, no updates or otherwise online help. What shall I do?? Kindly suggest. Sorry if I made some grammatical mistakes as English is not my first language. Thanks in advance.

• How to switch and list windows (possibly of the same application) in Unity?

  Is there a way to switch easily between specific windows belonging to the same given application? For example, open Firefox, maximise the window; then, open its History window (History menu - Show all history), maximise it too. Is there an easy way to switch between these two maximised Firefox windows, without necessarily minimising the current window (or other windows in front of the required window)? Similarly, if I open another application alongside, how can I quickly go to the Firefox window of my choice? I have tried Alt+Tab, but when coming back from another application, which of the Firefox windows I end up with seems indeterministic. Under Gnome, I would find the window I'm looking for in the bottom bar. Under OSX, I would right-click on the application's icon and choose the relevant window from the list. Under Windows 7, I would click on the application icon and choose from the smaller windows. Is there something similar that's not activated or not visible by default in Unity? Hovering my mouse until I've found somewhere worth hovering over hasn't been very successful so far. I would prefer a click-based solution, but solutions involving key short-cuts instead are welcome.

• I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

  I try to understand the benefits of distributed version control system (DVCS). I found Subversion Re-education and this article by Martin Fowler very useful. Mercurial and others DVCS promote a new way of working on code with changesets and local commits. It prevents from merging hell and other collaboration issues We are not affected by this as I practice continuous integration and working alone in a private branch is not an option, unless we are experimenting. We use a branch for every major version, in which we fix bugs merged from the trunk. Mercurial allows you to have lieutenants I understand this can be useful for very large projects like Linux, but I don't see the value in small and highly collaborative teams (5 to 7 people). Mercurial is faster, takes less disk space and full local copy allows faster logs & diffs operations. I'm not concerned by this either, as I didn't notice speed or space problems with SVN even with very large projects I'm working on. I'm seeking for your personal experiences and/or opinions from former SVN geeks. Especially regarding the changesets concept and overall performance boost you measured. UPDATE (12th Jan): I'm now convinced that it worth a try. UPDATE (12th Jun): I kissed Mercurial and I liked it. The taste of his cherry local commits. I kissed Mercurial just to try it. I hope my SVN Server don't mind it. It felt so wrong. It felt so right. Don't mean I'm in love tonight. FINAL UPDATE (29th Jul): I had the privilege to review Eric Sink's next book called Version Control by Example. He finished to convince me. I'll go for Mercurial.

• How to modify partitions after install?

  I wanted to have Ubuntu with full disk encryption on one big partition, and Windows on a small one. In 12.04, only the Server Edition installer has full disk encryption, so I used that and then installed ubuntu-desktop. When it asked for the size, I reduced it from ~999GB to ~750gb. Now after the install, on both gparted and disk utility I see /dev/sda2 taking ~931GB, and nothing unallocated, so I can't create a partition for windows. I got the size right, because when I right-click inside a folder, then hit 'properties', I see Free space: ~690GB (I don't know why it's not ~750GB, but at least it's not 900). The command df -h shows the same. So what can I do? Normally I would just resize a partition with gparted to create unallocated space, then create the partition. But here I have two problems: gparted does not seem to be showing the correct values, and also it says it does not support LUKS so I'm afraid it will mess things up. Any thoughts?

• Issue with increasing the root partition from the swap

  I have an issue with increase the size of my root partition. I have ElementaryOS Luna, and while installing it asked me how much space I want to use. I choosed 15 GB for it, because I want to use this as an alternative system. The issue is that after the installation was complete, I found out that my root partition is only 7 GB big, and SWAP is 8 GB which is useless cuz I have 8 GB of RAM. Now I want to shrink the swap and increase the size of my root partition, so I booted the LiveCD and used GParted. I shrinked the swap without any problems, but now I cant add that free space to any partition. I also turned Swap off. I would add a picture, but I need at least 10 reputation to post images ( Stupid ) Its also worth mentioning that in Gparted its showing my partition in a different way. I would post an image BUT I CANT, so I need to write it down. • Ubuntu automatic logout whenever I execute exe files

  I have a problem. Here's the thing. There were 4 partitions in my hard drive: One for ubuntu root folder One for ubuntu home folder One for general stuffs like music, movies... And the last one for SWAP To install Windows 7, I resized partitions and moving the order of partitions by using GParted. I moved all of the ext formatted partitions to the left, so that means the spare space would be at the right. And I formatted that spare space in NTFS and install windows 7. After successfully installing windows 7, I used LiveUSB to fix grub. I installed Boot Repair and, with just one click, now I can dual boot ubuntu and windows 7. But, the point, because of changing the order of partitions, especially the partition consisting of home folder, I couldn't log in the ubuntu. I used recovery mode and changed file /etc/passwd. Everything almost got back to normal except one thing. The windows apps that I installed via wine don't work anymore. I run them via accessing menu Applications/Wine/Programs but nothing loads. One more thing, when I double click on exe files to run them, ubuntu suddenly log outs. Thank you for reading my post, it's quite long and my English is fairly poor. I'd appreciate for anyone who reads it.

• Mouse selects everything on its own

  I have a strange problem that my mouse keeps selecting everything I point to. For example, if I open Rhythmbox, then at the top of the screen there is a text which says which song is playing. If I move my mouse over this text, then it will select this text; but I am not clicking. This behaviour does not happen in all programs. For example in Firefox I have no problem at all. Maybe it is Gtk related? Nautilus also behaves strangely; I cannot open files by clicking on them, I have to select and make a box around the file and then press enter to open it. If I click, then nothing happens. Similar problems also happen with other Gtk software. I think the problem might be related to touchscreen issues (I have a touchscreen). I run Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 12.04. I have a HP touchsmart 610 desktop computer. Any help is greatly appreciated. UPDATE: I just did a fresh reinstall, and I am 90% certain that it is related to the touchscreen drivers. Here is what happens when I reinstall. At first boot, so exactly after install, everything works fine, except the touchscreen: The touchscreen does not respond. I update ubuntu, because I installed from an old CD (CD with ub. 12.04). Then on next reboot I have touchscreen working , but the working touchscreen comes together with the mouse selecting everything on its own. SECOND QUESTION: Would anybody know how I could figure out what those touchscreen drivers are (so that I can disable them) ?

• How to pause and resume a game in XNA using the same key?

  I'm attempting to implement a really simple game state system, this is my first game - trying to make a Tetris clone. I'd consider myself a novice programmer at best. I've been testing it out by drawing different textures to the screen depending on the current state. The 'Not Playing' state seems to work fine, I press Space and it changes to 'Playing', but when I press 'P' to pause or resume the game nothing happens. I tried checking current and previous keyboard states thinking it was happening to fast for me to see, but again nothing seemed to happen. If I change either the pause or resume, so they're both different, it works as intended. I'm clearly missing something obvious, or completely lacking some know-how in regards to how update and/or the keyboard states work. I load it from iphone safari and it works fine. I then stop the server and load it again, and it works, because the offline cache is doing its job. However... if I save the website as a start icon in the iphone dashboard, and then I try to open it with the server stopped it won't load. However... if I open it with the server running at least once (it will work) then I can open it later without problem. It looks like even though the page was cached in safari, it is not cached in this saved app. Anybody knows how to get around this? Thank you!

• Thunderbird: "Could not initialize the application's security component" [closed]

  In Thunderbird, on startup, I get the error message: "Could not initialize the application's security component" The message continues to check permissions of the profile, and free disk space. df -h shows, that I have 19G free disk space. find . -not -perm -644 -not -perm -600 -ls shows: No file without rw-permissions for me. Before the error occured, thunderbird worked well. But I changed my main mail-account. I had two, let's call them A and B, and used mainly A, but now I wanted to deaktivate it, and receive and send automatically via the second. I Had problems moving the filters from inbox A to inbox B (missing copy-functionality). In the web, I found (mollazine) hints, to move key3.db, cert8.db and secmode.db out of the way, but it didn't work for me. Another hint was to uninstall Quickcam(?. sic!), but I don't have Quickcam. A third to recreate the profile, but I have subdirectories, filters, addressbook, groups - mails back to the year 2003. I don't want to risk the loss of data. The whole errormessage is: Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features. When I open the error-console, it is empty.

• OpenGL: Move camera regardless of rotation

  For a 2D board game I'd like to move and rotate an orthogonal camera in coordinates given in a reference system (window space), but simply can't get it to work. The idea is that the user can drag the camera over a surface, rotate and scale it. Rotation and scaling should always be around the center of the current viewport. The camera is set up as: gl.glMatrixMode(GL2.GL_PROJECTION); gl.glLoadIdentity(); gl.glOrtho(-width/2, width/2, -height/2, height/2, nearPlane, farPlane); where width and height are equal to the viewport's width and height, so that 1 unit is one pixel when no zoom is applied. Since these transformations usually mean (scaling and) translating the world, then rotating it, the implementation is: gl.glMatrixMode(GL2.GL_MODELVIEW); gl.glLoadIdentity(); gl.glRotatef(rotation, 0, 0, 1); // e.g. 45° gl.glTranslatef(x, y, 0); // e.g. +10 for 10px right, -2 for 2px down gl.glScalef(zoomFactor, zoomFactor, zoomFactor); // e.g. scale by 1.5 That however has the nasty side effect that translations are transformed as well, that is applied in world coordinates. If I rotate around 90° and translate again, X and Y axis are swapped. If I reorder the transformations so they read gl.glTranslatef(x, y, 0); gl.glScalef(zoomFactor, zoomFactor, zoomFactor); gl.glRotatef(rotation, 0, 0, 1); the translation will be applied correctly (in reference space, so translation along x always visually moves the camera sideways) but rotation and scaling are now performed around origin. It shouldn't be too hard, so what is it I'm missing?

• Cannot find GRUB - Ubuntu/Windows 8 dual-boot

  Hello Ubuntu community, I find myself in an interesting situation. I have a Dell Inspiron 531 with Windows Vista. Recently my brother decided it would be a good idea to overwrite Vista with the Windows 8 consumer preview. Since we have had this PC for a very long time, we have long since lost the Vista CD, and according to the Windows 8 preview website you cannot recover your previous OS without it. I thought this would be a good opportunity to try out Ubuntu (since we obviously cannot keep the preview as an OS), but it appears that Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop is not compatible with Win8. Ubuntu doesn't run from the LiveUSB I made, instead it freezes on the loading screen and then disintegrates into black and white stripes. I blamed this failure on Ubuntu not being compatible with win8 yet and tried to install Ubuntu from the USB on a partition made from the remaining space on my hard drive - about 100GB. However the installer crashed while loading modules and told me I didn't have enough disk space. Since then, I have not been able to load either Ubuntu or Windows, BIOS is shifted over to the left of my screen, and I always get the same message: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue> typing "ls" at the prompt gives me the following: (hd0) (hd0,msdos7) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) does this mean I have multiple partitions running windows on my computer? Is it possible to recover Vista without the disk? Are all of my problems stemming from Ubuntu not being compatible with Win8 preview? (I realize the majority of my questions are about Windows, but seeing as the prompt I get is for grub I thought I would ask here first.) Any insight anyone has on this predicament would be greatly appreciated.

I know about boot repairing, but how can I use it, If i cant boot ubuntu?? I heard about terrible problems with windows 8-linux dual boot, but I really need ubuntu because of school. I read many tutorials how to install ubuntu next to windows8, but despite that a problem accured. Here is what I have done. I have MSI GE60, windows(64bit) is running on mSATA SSD C drive. HDD is divided to two partitions for windows and I left there 50GB for ubuntu. I downloaded ubuntu 12.04.3desktop-amd64(64bit), created bootable USB using Universal USB Installer (recommended on Ubuntu site). I disabled USB legacy support (that Ubuntu could be installed in EFI mode- I was following instructions on Ubuntu site), and also Secure Boot (windows is now angry with me because I turned it off- when I start windows it informs me I should enable that). I inserted USB rebooted computer and chose install ubuntu, divided free 50GB space to swap(2000MB) and rest as ext4 main storage space for ubuntu. Installation passed normally, Ubuntu then asked me to reboot computer. After reboot windows 8 started. Now I can't start ubuntu. When I restart win8 to uefi there is possibility to boot ubuntu, but when I choose it, it crashes. When I choose try ubunfu from connected USB, nothing happend, still dark screed. What is wrong? Can you help me? I am in hurry to do it because of school. Thanks.

• Random greyed unresponsive screen on netbook

  I love my Asus Eee PC 1000 Ubuntu 12.04 netbook, but I have a little problem. As I use it, the screen will randomly turn grey and become unresponsive. I can then only wait, until perhaps 10-60 secs. later, when I can interact again. Only the bar at the top of my screen retains its colour throughout. I thought it might be Firefox, as I have a lot of tabs open. I installed Chromium, used it instead, and the problem remained. A while back I upgraded from 1 to 2 Gb RAM. So, I thought recently, maybe I should increase the swap-space. I have 738Mb of 7.2Gb free on root; and 2Gb of 28Gb free on my home drive. I bought a 32 Gb SD Card and assigned 4Gb to swap space. cat /proc/swaps reports that the partition is being used. Alas the problem remains. Does anyone know what's wrong with my machine? The SD Card has changed my machine somewhat, but the greying still happens. I ran free -m shortly after another episode, and received: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2004 1731 272 0 370 769 -/+ buffers/cache: 591 1412 Swap: 4073 0 4073 Update: Using 'top', I can see that compiz uses about 43% of the CPU (#1 position) when the greying occurs. After the greying, compiz drops back down to its usual 8% of CPU.

• How can I guarantee a solvable Fifteen Puzzle shuffle?

  I am making a 15 Puzzle game in C# that allows the user to enter a custom row and column value up to a maximum of a 10 x 10 puzzle. I am having problems with the shuffle method. I want to make it so the puzzle is always solvable by first creating a winning puzzle then shuffling the empty space. The problem is it is too inefficient to call every click event each time. I need a way to invoke the click event of a button adjacent to the empty space but not diagonal. I also use an invisible static button for the empty spot. The PuzzlePiece class inherits from Button. I am not too sure how to do this. • Problem video nvidia ubuntu 12.04

  I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 on my PC (Dell precision 370) but the video is not working as it should. Problems: When I log in to unity 3D I get a transparent bar (where the firefox, libre office, etc icons are) but I can see the tooltips when I put my mouse over where the icons are, I can see the top toolbar with no problem and I see just white on the rest of the desktop! When I log in using unity 2D I see the left bar cut in half (so I can't see the trash icon that is at the botton), the toolbar at the top shows OK and the desktop show OK but with some apps. For example, if I open a terminal and maximize it, it will only show just where the left toolbar "cuts". But if I open firefox it will open fine. Config: My PC comes with a nvidia quadro nvs 280 and I see that by default ubuntu is using the nouveau driver. Workarounds tried: I tried uninstalling the nouveau driver and the desktop works fine but I can use only unity 2D. I tried installing the nvidia-173 drivers using synaptic but I get "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first". I go to "Edit - Fix Broken packages" and I get the error: "E: Unable to correct problem, you have held broken packages.E: Error, PkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breakes, this may be caused by held packages.E:Unable to correct dependencies" Output of lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV37GL [Quadro PCI-E Series] (rev a2) Any idea so as to what I should do? Thanks in advance for any help. PS: Ah, the nvidia-173 driver was working fine on ubuntu 10.04.

  Why does Ubuntu 12.10 Beta2 insist on commiting changes to the partition table even as no real changes has been done? This is a show stopper for me as I'm installing without a CD/DVD ROM. This is how I go about it. I downloaded the iso image and extracted vmlinuz and initrd.lz to the same folder I keep the iso image. Configured grub (0.9x) to boot /ubuntu/vmlinuz with the iso image like this: title ubuntu live-cd kernel /ubuntu/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu/ubuntu-12.10-beta2-desktop-i386.iso ro quiet splash initrd /ubuntu/initrd.lz boot This works well and I get a running livecd session. The iso image is mounted on /isomedia (or something similar). The spare HD space where I want to install Ubuntu is in the logical area (at the wery end of the disk). I have tried both to use the space as empty and preformated with ext4. After selecting the partition and selecting "use as ext4" and selecting a mountpoint (/) I get the message: "The installer needs to commit changes to partition tables, but cannot do so because partitions on the following mount points could not be unmounted" "/isomedia" (or something similar). Is this a "feature" of the installer? To insist that everything is unmounted even if no changes is nescesary (as fare as I understand). It's probably a safety feature but is it needed? I have cahnged layouts with parted and gparted (at the end of the disk) for years without any failures. I understand that booting the iso image like this is not the common way. But it is just such a beautifull way of doing it when you hav a running system and want to play with another. Any one had any success installing Ubuntu (12.10 beta2 ) like this? Best regards Uten

• Opening an SQL CE file at runtime with Entity Framework 4

  I am getting started with Entity Framework 4, and I an creating a demo app as a learning exercise. The app is a simple documentation builder, and it uses a SQL CE store. Each documentation project has its own SQL CE data file, and the user opens one of these files to work on a project. The EDM is very simple. A documentation project is comprised of a list of subjects, each of which has a title, a description, and zero or more notes. So, my entities are Subject, which contains Title and Text properties, and Note, which has Title and Text properties. There is a one-to-many association from Subject to Note. I am trying to figure out how to open an SQL CE data file. A data file must match the schema of the SQL CE database created by EF4's Create Database Wizard, and I will implement a New File use case elsewhere in the app to implement that requirement. Right now, I am just trying to get an existing data file open in the app. I have reproduced my existing 'Open File' code below. I have set it up as a static service class called File Services. The code isn't working quite yet, but there is enough to show what I am trying to do. I am trying to hold the ObjectContext open for entity object updates, disposing it when the file is closed. So, here is my question: Am I on the right track? What do I need to change to make this code work with EF4? Is there an example of how to do this properly? Thanks for your help. • Strange intermittent SQL connection error, fixes on reboot, comes back after 3-5 days (ASP.NET)

  For some reason every 3-5 days our web app loses the ability to open a connection to the db with the following error, the strange thing is that all we have to do is reboot the container (it is a VPS) and it is restored to normal functionality. Then a few days later or so it happens again. Has anyone ever had such a problem? I have noticed a lot of ANONYMOUS LOGONs in the security log in the middle of the night from our AD server which is strange, and also some from an IP in Amsterdam. I am not sure how to tell what exactly they mean or if it is related or not. Server Error in '/ntsb' Application. • Representing game states in Tic Tac Toe

  The goal of the assignment that I'm currently working on for my Data Structures class is to create a of Quantum Tic Tac Toe with an AI that plays to win. Currently, I'm having a bit of trouble finding the most efficient way to represent states. Overview of current Structure: AbstractGame Has and manages AbstractPlayers (game.nextPlayer() returns next player by int ID) Has and intializes AbstractBoard at the beginning of the game Has a GameTree (Complete if called in initialization, incomplete otherwise) AbstractBoard Has a State, a Dimension, and a Parent Game Is a mediator between Player and State, (Translates States from collections of rows to a Point representation Is a StateConsumer AbstractPlayer Is a State Producer Has a ConcreteEvaluationStrategy to evaluate the current board StateTransveralPool Precomputes possible transversals of "3-states". Stores them in a HashMap, where the Set contains nextStates for a given "3-state" State Contains 3 Sets -- a Set of X-Moves, O-Moves, and the Board Each Integer in the set is a Row. These Integer values can be used to get the next row-state from the StateTransversalPool SO, the principle is Each row can be represented by the binary numbers 000-111, where 0 implies an open space and 1 implies a closed space. So, for an incomplete TTT board: From the Set<Integer> board perspective: X_X R1 might be: 101 OO_ R2 might be: 110 X_X R3 might be: 101, where 1 is an open space, and 0 is a closed space From the Set<Integer> xMoves perspective: X_X R1 might be: 101 OO_ R2 might be: 000 X_X R3 might be: 101, where 1 is an X and 0 is not From the Set<Integer> oMoves perspective: X_X R1 might be: 000 OO_ R2 might be: 110 X_X R3 might be: 000, where 1 is an O and 0 is not Then we see that x{R1,R2,R3} & o{R1,R2,R3} = board{R1,R2,R3} The problem is quickly generating next states for the GameTree. If I have player Max (x) with board{R1,R2,R3}, then getting the next row-states for R1, R2, and R3 is simple.. Set<Integer> R1nextStates = StateTransversalPool.get(R1); The problem is that I have to combine each one of those states with R1 and R2. Is there a better data structure besides Set that I could use? Is there a more efficient approach in general? I've also found Point<-State mediation cumbersome. Is there another approach that I could try there? Thanks!
