• Why does the app signature change in Android after a classpath change?

  I have an Android project that branched into three different applications, app-1, app-2 and app-3, that apply some customizations. Currently there is a lot of code duplication, making maintenance a nightmare: do the changes in one of the branches, and then merge the other two. So we create a library project, named app-core, that factors out most of the duplicated code. So far so good. When I launch this into an emulator where the application was already loaded (before the refactoring), I get this exception: Re-installation failed due to different application signatures A different signature? But I just added a line in the .classpath to link to the app-core Java project! The main question is: are the existing users going to be bothered by this too? And the side question: Why is it a different signature?

• ReportViewer with DataSets

  I have a question about the following architecture. I am importing my business objects into my client using WCF. Due to the complexity of the business objects ( nested hierarchies ) I want to flatten out my business objects into a dataset/datatable. There are many more tutorials and how-to on successfully using datatables in a report than with a business object so I am pretty attached to this idea. My question is what sort of DataSet should I use? Strongly typed or not? If strongly typed how do I import my business objects into the Datatables?

• Display continious dates in Pivot Chart

  I have a set of data in a pivot table with date times and events. I've made a pivot chart with this data, and grouped the data by day and year, then display a count of events for each day. So, my horizontal axis goes from 19 March 2007 to 11 May 2010, and my vertical axis is numeric, going from zero to 140. For some days, I have zero events. These days don't seem to be shown on the horizontal axis, so 2008 is narrower than 2009. How do I display a count of zero for days with no events? I'd like my horizontal axis to be continuous, so that it does not miss any days, and every month ends up taking up the same amount of horizontal space. (This question is similar to the unanswered question here, but I'd rather not generate a table of all the days in the last x number of years just to get a smooth plot!)

• Does a servlet-based stack have significant overheads?

  I don't know if it's simply because page-loads take a little time, or the way servlets have an abstraction framework above the 'bare metal' of HTTP, or just because of the "Enterprise" in Jave-EE, but in my head I have the notion that a servlet-based app is inherently adding overhead compared to a Java app which simply deals with sockets directly. Forget web-pages, imagine instead a Java server app where you send it a question over an HTTP request and it looks up an answer from memory and returns the answer in the response. You can easily write a Java socket-based app which does this, you can also do a servlet approach and get away from the "bare metal" of sockets. Is there any measurable performance impact to be expected implementing the same approach using Servlets rather than a custom socket-based HTTP listening app? And yes, I am hazy on the exact data sent in HTTP requests and I know it's a vague question. It's really about whether servlet implementations have lots of layers of indirection or anything else that would add up to a significant overhead per call, where by significant I mean maybe an additional 0.1s or more.

UIImageView* animationView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame: self.animationViewContainer.bounds]; animationView.animationImages = animationArray; animationView.animationDuration = 0.5; animationView.animationRepeatCount = 5; [animationView startAnimating]; What I'd like to do is, controlling duration between animationImages. For instance, show image1 for 0.3 sec image2 for 0.5 sec.. There must be some way to do this, but hard to find an answer. I am researching some different ways that T4 is used, and I would appreciate to hear how YOU may have used it for real life scenarios. I am primarily interested in non-standard and creative uses. • How exactly can Python compliment your C# skills for windows based development?

My question is, how (if at all) can Python compliment the skills of a typical C# developer working mainly with MS technologies on a Windows Platform. Some examples of typical C# dev on windows would be (SOA applications, web applications, windows services, automation, xml handling) Surely there must be some scenarios where knowing Python would help you get certain tasks done quicker or more efficiently than using traditional C# / MS technologies. • Third Party Libraries and Technologies every Java Programmer must be aware of?

  I agree that this is a very subjective question but as a student of Java , I get suggested good libraries and technologies for Java by my mentors at work. For example, I was not aware of Google Guice for Dependency Injection, awesomeness of Java Reflection APIs, ORMs like Hibernate or stuffs you could do with libraries like Hadoop. I want to collect and share some of the libraries that exemplifies good java programming (so that beginners like me could code walk and emulate the coding practice), teach unique concepts to Java (for example Dependency Injections or ORM) and/or are really interesting libraries that a student like me would get to do interesting projects on (eg. Hadoop). I redited this question 3 times to make it more specific : ). I am sorry if I am really not clear in my intentions. But some kind of a list of good concepts and third party libraries for Java could really help some of my intern friends here at work. Thank you.

• Is it OK to run an array with 22k strings in a PHP code on a shared web host?

  I'm new to writing code so kindly bear with me if this is a very noobish question. A couple of days back I asked a question about a PHP code that matches the the query entered by users on my website to an array stored within the PHP code and displays the matched queries. Here is the code I'm talking about Now I've ended up with a rather large list (over 22k) of strings that have to be stored in the array. Is it ok to run it like this? I'm hosting the site on a shared hostgator package, will this cause my site to crash? I don't know too much about DBs but can I somehow store this on MySQL instead of having it in the code?

  Hello, As you must have seen in gmail, a small popup appears to chat when you click on right bottom corner of your screen. Interestingly, this popup remains open and at the same place even when we navigate from one webpage to another. How can this be done? It doesn't look as though it's different page.   This is one of an interview question which I had recently. I would like to know others perception of approach for this problem. Question: You are given a structure which holds an employee details with two elements as int Deptartment and string Name. struct Employee { string Name; int Dept; } You are given details of N Employees among which there are N/2 employees Dept are 0's and N/2 employees dept are 1's arranged in some random order. You need to sort the employee details based on their Dept value and it should be stable i.e., the order of 1s and 0s in the original record should be maintained. For example, given the following sample data: Name Dept X1 0 X2 1 X3 0 X4 1 X5 0 after sorting the result should be: Name Dept X2 1 X4 1 X1 0 X3 0 X5 0 The algorithm should be stable and the complexity should be o(N), with constant space for additional variables (which means sorting should be done in-place).

• Any tips on switching from bash to zsh if often using shell inside of emacs?

  Related to this question: Advantages and disadvantages between zsh and emacs' (e)shell, I've read some great things about zsh, when using M-x shell, my familiar emacs shell seemed like it would need some customizations. I also use evil-mode in shell mode, so that means I use vi keystrokes for shell editing. Took a little while to get accustomed to this, but I really like it. Any advice or tips on going from bash to zsh if one uses emacs? Or better off adding the file completion mentioned in this question: Worth switching to zsh for casual use?.

• Calculate difference in days ActiveSupport:TimeWithZone in the most "rubyish" style?

  I have a feeling someone is going to point me to another question that answers this but I've been searching with no luck over this simple issue. I have a Activerecord with a datetime property. It returns as an ActiveSupport:TimeWithZone. I know I can't compare that to DateTime.now because that doesn't include a zone so I need to use Time.zone. Makes sense. What I'm wondering is stylewise is there a "cleaner" way to do this than subtracting and dividing the result by 86400? Here's what I do: ((Time.zone.now - myActiveRecord.visit_date)/86400).to_i Works but seems un-rubyish and I feel like I'm missing something. Should I be casting, comparing or converting some other route or is this really the typical way to do this in rails? Appreciate any tips or a link to a question that already covers this. Thank you

  I'm a python newbie so I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before. I am building out an application in GAE and need to generate a report that contains the values for a user-defined subset of fields. For example, in my db model, CrashReport, I have the following fields: entry_type entry_date instance_id build_id crash_text machine_info I present a user with the above list as a checkbox group from which they select. Whichever fields the user selects, I then create a report showing all the values in the datastore, but only for the fields that they selected. For example, if from the above list, the user selects the build_id and crash_text fields, the output might look like this: build_id crash_text 0.8.2 blown gasket 0.8.2 boom! 0.8.1 crack! ... So the question is, how exactly do I only access the values for the fields which the user has defined?

  I think this is a relevant question for programmers and I'd like to hear other people's answers because some syntax highlighting color schemes are better on the eyes than others. This can affect productivity as much as ergonomic keyboards or anything else on here. It's about comfort and productivity. So, I'm curious. Do you find some color schemes better adapted for some languages over others? At the other end of the spectrum, I think coding without syntax highlight is awful and slow going.   Though it's a quite subjective question but I feel it necessary to share on this forum. I have personally experienced that when I create a UDF (even if that is not complex) and use it into my SQL it drastically decrease the performance. But when I use SQL inbuild function they happen to work pretty faster. Conversion , logical & string functions are clear example of that. So, my question is "Why SQL in build functions are faster than UDF"? and it would be an advantage if someone can guide me how can I judge/manipulate function cost either mathematically or logically.

  The question is a bit vague, but I am not really sure why this happens: I have the following code: p user.room.users.length user.room.users.each {|usr| puts "b" } user.room.users.each {|usr| puts "a"; usr.enter(Room[Config::entrance]) } which outputs: 5 b b b b b a a a I also made User#enter count how many times it's been called and it returns 3! I am completely baffled by this behaviour. I doubt the code within User#enter is the cause, but if someone thinks it might be relevant I can provide it (I don't want to clutter the question unnecessarily).   The relevant snippet of HTML: <span class="a"> <div class="fieldname">Question 1</div> <input type="text" value="" name="q1" /> </span> The relevant jQuery: $.each($('.a'), function(){ $thisField = $('.fieldname', $(this)); }); What exactly is being set to $thisField? If my understanding of multiple selectors in jQuery is correct, it should be grabbing the outer <span> element AND the inner <div> element. But for some reason, if I use $thisField.prepend("hi"); it ends up putting hi right before the text Question 1, but not before <div>. I thought multiple selectors would grab both elements, and that prepend() adds hi to the beginning of BOTH elements, not just the <div>

  Hello. I know this is a question that every programmer should know, but I do not know. Long time no C programming and I've forgotten a lot of things. My question is: I have three huge static arrays defined inside a header file. Someone told me that It's much better to declare them as extern in the header file, and define them in a single C or C++ source file. How can I do that?
