• What sort of schema can I use to accommodate manual date based data entries?

  I have an admin where users from multiple properties can enter in monthly statistics for twitter/facebook followers. We do not have access to the real data/db so this is why a manual entry. The form looks like this: Type ( radio, select **one** only ): - Twitter - Facebook Followers/Fans ( textfield ): Property (dropdown): Hotel A, Hotel B Date Start: mm/dd/yyyy (textfield) Date End: mm/dd/yyyy (textfield) Question 1.1: Since I am only keeping track of month per month, the date start/end fields which I have already created might be too specific. Would it be a better idea just to have a start month/year and and month/year if that's the only thing I care about? Question 1.2: What schema could I use for month to month statistics if I were to change the date start and end textfields to start month/year and end month/year dropdowns?

• Common optimization rules

  This is a dangerous question, so let me try to phrase it correctly. Premature optimization is the root of all evil, but if you know you need it, there is a basic set of rules that should be considered. This set is what I'm wondering about. For instance, imagine you got a list of a few thousand items. How do you look up an item with a specific, unique ID? Of course, you simply use a Dictionary to map the ID to the item. And if you know that there is a setting stored in a database that is required all the time, you simply cache it instead of issuing a database request hundred times a second. I guess there are a few even more basic ideas. I am specifically not looking for "don't do it, for experts: don't do it yet" or "use a profiler" answers, but for really simple, general hints. If you feel this is an argumentative question, you probably misunderstood my intention.

• Proper chart scaling in Reporting Services 2005

  I'm developing a simple bar-chart in Reporting Services 2005 with a stored procedure as data-source. The values in this graph can be both positive and negative, and can span a very big range, and hence I cannot specify any non-dynamic scale that will work for all scenarios. The problem I'm facing is that the automatic scaling pretty much sucks. I get no line to show where the zero-point is, and the y-scale labels are from top to bottom: 8818 -191181 -391181 etc etc... So my question is, what is the best approach to make the scale more adapted to human reading? Is there any guide out there? Does reporting services 2008 handle this better? Also, moving away from Reporting Services is not really an option. I realize how to put values and expression in the max, min, and the gridline interval fields, although its more of a question what expressions I should put there.

• Problem running firefox built from source (on Ubuntu 9.10)

  The title of the question sums it up pretty well. I've downloaded the source for firefox 3.6 and built it (no errors), but when I try to run it, I get a warning that says: (firefox-bin:2857): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times I'm not sure what to try now. Any suggestions? Or even a better place to ask this question? *EDIT - It's not that I only get a warning, that wouldn't bother me. The problem is that the warning is the only thing that ever happens (no firefox windows show up or anything). When I run it from the terminal, that warning shows up twice and then nothing else happens (it just hangs and I have to Ctrl-C it).

  I have a question that concerns multi value dependency. The relation looks like this: R(A,B) with A -->> B (A multi value determines B) I've been told that this relation is in 4th normal form, but I don't really se how. I know that if the multi value dependency is trivial, then it doesn't violate the 4th normal form. But is this trivial? It would be trivial if it, for example, looked like this: {A,B} -->> B But the first dependency example shouldn't be trivial. The other rule for 4th NF says that A in this case needs to be a super key of the relation, but it isn't. As far as I can tell, A isn't a super key, since {A,B} is needed to identify a tuple. So the question is, why is this in 4th normal form? It seems to be violating both of the rules.

• Call center workflow scenario with WF 4

  I need to develop a workflow for a call center. A bot will ask some predefined questions to the caller. Based on the answers the workflow will decide the questions to ask and finally redirect the caller to a representative that has required skills. Based on the scenario above, I have several questions. How can I make the workflow "wait" between asking a question to the caller and receiving response from the caller? Do I have to use HandleExternalEvent? If so do I have to define an event for every question? Flowchart workflow seems to be the best solution but I can't imagine how to handle this waiting issue right now. Any help is appreciated.

"\n"; } I'm Puzzled by each operator on the first line. What type exactly are $response, $respone->{bucket}. Looks like the expression within the for is an array, but I don't understand this syntax: @{ ... }?

  I've run into something odd in a .NET CF 2.0 project for Pocket PC 2003 (Visual Studio 2005). I was dealing with a System.IO.Stream object and found that the IDE wouldn't auto-complete the Dispose() method. I typed it in manually and received: 'System.IO.Stream.Dispose(bool)' is inaccessible due to its protection level The error is referring to the protected Dispose(bool) method. Dispose() is either private or not present. Question 1: How is this possible? Stream implements IDisposable: public abstract class Stream : MarshalByRefObject, IDisposable ... and IDisposable requires a Dispose() method: public interface IDisposable { void Dispose(); } I know the compiler won't let me get away with that in my code. Question 2: Will I cause problems by working around and disposing my streams directly? IDisposable idisp = someStream; idisp.Dispose(); The implicit cast is accepted by the compiler.

  I had previously asked this question. At the time I was working with VS 2008. To restate the question. I have a web application that generates 1000's of small xml files in a certain directory. I would like to exclude this directory from the build process in visual studio 2010. With vs 2008 it was not possible. Has anything changed? Besides the general wait for VS to iterate through this directory with each build, it also strains my system resources, so I would like to exclude it from the project, but the dir and files need to physically exist on disk, because they are part of the application. Any OOB VS 2010 solutions, or any good workarounds? Thanks

The problem would be easily solved if there was some way for me to create a "table" with 4 rows as part of my SELECT (to use with NOT IN or MINUS). • C++ - How to efficiently find out if any string in a vector can be assembled from a set of letters

  Hello, everyone! I am implementing a text-based version of Scrabble for a college project. I have a vector containing around 400K strings (my dictionary), and, at some point in every turn, I'm going to have to check if there's still a word in the dictionary which can be formed with the pieces in the player's hand. I'm checking if the player has any move left... If not, it's game over for the player in question... My only solution to this is iterating through the string, one by one, and using a sub-routine I have to check if the string in question can be formed from the player's pieces. I'll implement a quickfail checking if the user has any vowels, but it'll still be woefully inefficient. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time!

  Maybe you consider this question trivial but im just curious what is your opinion. I have three radiobuttons. "Show blue", "Show red" and "Show all". I did it with nullable boolean. There is collumn in database where blue is 0 and red is 1 so in metode i have to translate bool to int to compare those values (i do it in c#).Of course it works, but i wonder if it is the best solution. And question is wich type is best in this case? nullable bool, int, or maybe string?

• How can I make a boring project (another WordPress site) interesting?

  WordPress is my example, but the question can be generalized to any technology that is not particularly interesting. To me, WordPress takes away the intellectually gratifying pieces of coding. I would rather write a new version of WordPress than write a WordPress theme and glue together some plugins. I am using WP because my company dictates the platform for some of our clients (I do not disagree with the choice from a business perspective, WP is quick and cheap to implement). My question is, how can I make my next WordPress project interesting? I want to advance my understanding of the fundamentals of programming (aka data structures, algorithms, and caching) but do not see how I can achieve this when coding another WP site. I have a fairly tight understanding of front-end technologies and believe I have made WP do things it was never intended to do. Examples are here and here. Solving front-end related problems is not as interesting as coding a full stack application. Any advice will help.

• Array of Sentences?

  Javascript noob here.... I am trying to build a site that will help my kids read predefined sentences from a select group, then when a button is clicked it will display one of the sentences. Is an array the best option for this? For example, I have this array (below) and on the click of a button I would like one of these sentences to appear on the page. <script type="text/javascript"> Sentence = new Array() Sentence[0]='Can we go to the park.'; Sentence[1]='Where is the orange cat? Said the big black dog.'; Sentence[2]='We can make the bird fly away if we jump on something.' Sentence[3]='We can go down to the store with the dog. It is not too far away.' Sentence[4]='My big yellow cat ate the little black bird.' Sentence[5]='I like to read my book at school.' Sentence[6]='We are going to swim at the park.' </script> Again, is an array the best for this and how could I get the sentence to display?   When researching for this question and reading the sourcecode in random.py, I started wondering whether randrange and randint really behave as "advertised". I am very much inclined to believe so, but the way I read it, randrange is essentially implemented as start + int(random.random()*(stop-start)) (assuming integer values for start and stop), so randrange(1, 10) should return a random number between 1 and 9. randint(start, stop) is calling randrange(start, stop+1), thereby returning a number between 1 and 10. My question is now: If random() were ever to return 1.0, then randint(1,10) would return 11, wouldn't it?

• iPhone SDK: Keep an image from scrolling with a UIScrollView

  Hi, I've been searching all over for an easy way to do this. Right now I have a UIScrollView setup as my main view. There's an Image on the left and a column of TextFields on the right. When any TextField is tapped, the keyboard comes up and hides the bottom TextField. So I have the ScrollView move up to unhide the bottom TextField. Question #1: Is there a way to have it respond to a specific TextField instead of all of them? Question #2: Is there a way to keep the Image on the left static so it doesn't move with the TextFields?   A portion of my program requires a "flag" retrieval, that is I am fetching a value that is either True or False, and based on this return value two things could follow. 1) The flag is true, aka "go ahead", and I retrieve data from a database. 2) The flag is false, and I want to prevent the data from being retrieved. Now, this check has to be performed before any function that would call upon the database in question. I decided to implement this check in the form of an event handler attached to GUI objects that would trigger this data inquiry. This check event handler is called first upon necessary events, and my question is: How do I stop subsequent event handlers from firing if the FIRST event handler (my flag checker) comes up FALSE?
