• MasterPage Page_Load hits before Grid_ItemCommand

  I am using the session object to store success/error messages based on user actions. On each postback, the message is set on ItemCommend and retrieved on the Page_Load of the master page. Once retrieved, the message is deleted from the session. The problem is that the master page's Page_Load gets called before the ItemCommand gets called so the message does not show up until the next refresh or postback. How is this situation normally handled? Is there some other event we can code against?

• How to keep the popup menu of a JComboBox open on populating it ?

  I have a JComboBox on my Panel. One of the popup menu items is 'More' and when I click that I fetch more menu items and add them to the existing list. After this, I wish to keep the popup menu open so that the user realizes that more items have been fetched however, the popup closes. • how to use expressons as function parameters in powershell

  This is a very simple task in every language I have ever used, but I can't seem to figure it out in PowerShell. An example of what I'm talking about in C: abs(x + y) The expression x + y is evaluated, and the result passed to abs as the parameter... how do I do that in PowerShell? The only way I have figured out so far is to create a temporary variable to store the result of the expression, and pass that. PowerShell seems to have very strange grammar and parsing rules that are constantly catching me by surprise, just like this situation. Does anyone know of documentation or a tutorial that explains the basic underlying theory of the language? I can't believe these are all special cases, there must be some rhyme or reason that no tutorial I have yet read explains. And yes, I've read this question, and all of those tutorials are awful. I've pretty much been relegated to learning from existing code.

• What Database to distribute as part of a C# app backend

  I am planning on writing and commercialising a C# app which will store data in an underlying database I use MySQL on my environment for my own development and this is what I would have used to write the application for myself (no need to use FK - MyISAM engine would be fine). I am concerned about how easy it will be to distribute the app together with the database engine. Would using MySQL allow me for easy packaging of the app for a "one-click" install on the client side? (ie I do not want them to have to install MySQL by themselves) and also is it feasible from a licensing point of view? Are there other Database systems which would make the process more straight-forward

• dojo 1.4: difference in tree html rendering

  Hi, I have written an application using dojo 1.3 in which i have used the dijit tree. I am loading the tree with json data specified in the store which is in turn used by the tree model. In the 1.3 version the tree elements pick up the id directly from the json data.However in 1.4 the tree elements have their own id which is something like dijit__treenode_4. The id's that I have specified in json are unique and im not able to understand why these are not being used anymore. Please help me understand how this functionality has changed and how I can override the automatic id generation.. Thanks in advance, Fell

  I need to dynamically create Dijits to add N rules to a particular form. Currently I am adding them with the following javascript. var value = new dijit.form.Select({ id: "value_" + counter, store: ValueStore, searchAttr: "description" }, "stateSelect" + counter); value.placeAt(form, "last"); value.startup(); This is creating the element correctly in the form, but it is not associated when the form actually posts. I know Dojo is recognizing the Dijit because the styling is correct. How can I make sure they are included in the DOM form?

• How do you handle passwords or credentials for standalone applications?

  Let's say that you have a standalone application (a Java application in my case) and that this application has a configuration file (a XML file in my case) where you store the credentials (user and password) for a bunch of databases you need to connect. Everything works great, but now you discover (or your are given a new requirement like me) that you have to put this application in a different server and that you can't have these credentials in the configuration files because of security and/or compliance considerations. I'm considering to use data sources hosted in the application server (a WAS server), but I think this could have poor performance and maybe it's not the best approach since I'm connecting from a standalone application. I was also considering to use some sort of encryption, but I would like to keep things as simple as possible. How would you handle this case? Where would you put these credentials or protect them from being compromised? Or how would you connect to your databases in this scenario?

I always got stuck with getting multiple values into one variable. My value structure (used for all values passed around, including variables) looks like this, for example: class Value { public: ValueType type; int integerValue; string stringValue; } Works fine with integers and strings, but how could I implement arrays? (From now on with array I mean arrays in my experimental language, not in C++) How can I fit the array concept into the Value class above? Is it possible? How should I make arrays able to be passed around just as you could pass around integers and strings in my language, using the class above? Accessing array elements or memory allocation wouldn't be the problem, I just don't know how to store them.

  Hi, C bothers me with its handling of strings. • Storing DateTime (UTC) vs. storing DateTimeOffset

  I usually have an "interceptor" that right before reading/writing from/to the database does datetime conversion (from UTC to localtime, and from localtime to utc), so I can use DateTime.Now (derivations and comparisions) throughout the system without worrying about timezones. Regarding serialization and moving data between computers, there is no need to bother, as the datetime is always UTC. Should I continue storing my dates (SQL 2008 - datetime) in UTC format or should I instead store it using DateTimeOffset (SQL 2008 - datetimeoffset)? UTC Dates in the database (datetime type) have been working and known for so long, why change it? What are the advantages? I have already looked into articles like this one, but I'm not 100% convinced though. Any thoughts?

  Now that Opera Mini is becoming so popular in the App store I want to effectively warn my web site visitors that the rendition they see in Opera Mini is far from what I meant them to see and redirect them to my page in Mobile Safari, so they can enjoy HTML5 and CSS3. I've been banging my head around that task all day long, but I can't seem to find a solution. My hope lies in the custom URL schemes, but seems Opera Mini handles all schemes which usually Safari does. Would be great if there's a scheme like safari://www.domain.com which opens ONLY in Safari, so I can redirect the visitors to it. Does anybody know a solution to that problem? --edit Just to make myself clear - browser detection is not the problem (I'm doing Javascript for 13 years now) the question is if there's a way to invoke the Safari app on the iPhone from within a web page which is being viewed in Opera Mini.

  The question is rather simple. I know that there is SQLite. There is Core Data also. But I need something in between. More object-oriented than SQLite API and simplier than Core Data. Main points are: I need access to stored entities only by id. No queries required. I need to store items of a single type, it means that I can use only one table if I choose SQLite. I want automatic object-relational conversion. Or object-storage if the storage is not relational. I can use object archiving, but I have to implement things (NSArchiver). But I want to write some kind of class and get persistence automatically. As it can be done with Hibernate/ActiveRecord/Core Data/etc. Thanks.

I am creating a table which will store weekly shift hours for employees. for example: Jon works 9:00am tp 9:00pm Monday , 10:00 AM to 5:00PM on Tuseday etc....   Hello: I have a collection of physical parameters associated with different items. For example: Item, p1, p2, p3 a, 1, 2, 3 b, 4, 5, 6 [...] where px stands for parameter x. I could go ahead and store the database exactly as presented; the schema would be CREATE TABLE t1 (item TEXT PRIMARY KEY, p1 FLOAT, p2 FLOAT, p3 FLOAT); I could retrieve the parameter p1 for all the items with the statement: SELECT p1 FROM t1; A second alternative is to have an schema like: CREATE TABLE t1 (id INT PRIMARY KEY, item TEXT, par TEXT, val FLOAT) This seems much simpler if you have many parameters (as I do). However, the parameter retrieval seems very awkward: SELECT val FROM t1 WHERE par == 'p1' What do you advice? Should go for the "pivoted" (first) version or the id, par, val (second) version?   In scala, you often use an iterator to do a for loop in an increasing order like: for(i <- 1 to 10){ code } How would you do it so it goes from 10 to 1? I guess 10 to 1 gives an empty iterator (like usual range mathematics)?   I'm trying to zip a large number of pdf files (stored as BLOBs in the DB) and then return the zip as an attachment to the user. What's the best way to do this without running into memory issues? Another note: I actually need to merge some PDFs prior to adding them to the ZipOutputStream. Therefore, a couple PDFs will need to be stored in memory at a time. I assume it would be best to then store them as temporary files on the server before zipping them all?

  Hello - my main question is given a feature centroid, how can I draw it in MATLAB? In more detail, I have an NxNx3 image (an rgb image) of which I take 4x4 blocks and compute a 6-dimensional feature vector for each block. I store these feature vectors in an Mx6 matrix on which I run kmeans function and obtain the centroids in a kx6 matrix, where k is the number of clusters and 6 is the number of features for each block. How can I draw these center clusters in my image in order to visualize if the algorithm is performing the way I wish it to perform? Or if anyone has any other way/suggestions on how I can visualize the centroids on my image, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

  Hi So here is my problem. I want to store 2-tuple (key, val) and want to perform following operations: - keys are strings and values are Integers - multiple keys can have same value - adding new tuples - updating any key with new value (any new value or updated value is greater than the previous one, like timestamps) - fetching all the keys with values less than or greater than given value - deleting tuples. Hash seems to be the obvious choice for updating the key's value but then lookups via values will be going to take longer (O(n)). The other option is balanced binary search tree with key and value switched. So now lookups via values will be fast (O(lg(n))) but updating a key will take (O(n)). So is there any data-structure which can be used to address these issues? Thanks.

Clarifications: Using a header in the file to store the number of lines won't work for what I want to do. I want it to be as random as possible (the best being if each line has an equal probability of being chosen as every other line.) The file will never change while the program is being run.   My Rails app has a normal ActiveRecord "Account" model stored in the database. The model will store the URL to a remote XML file which defines some other objects. For example, the Account has_many :galleries but the Gallery model is simply defined by nodes in the XML document. So how do I get /accounts/1/galleries to show the galleries from that account's XML? How do I setup this relationship? I know how to do basic non-AR models, but I'm not sure how to define the association or if I need to create a Gallery model at all.
