• Preallocate memory for a program in Linux before it gets started

  Hi, folks, I have a program that repeatedly solves large systems of linear equations using cholesky decomposition. Characterising is that I sometimes need to store the complete factorisation which can exceed about 20 GB of memory. The factorisation happens inside a library that I call. Furthermore, this matrix and the resulting factorisation changes quite frequently and as such the memory requirements as well. I am not the only person to use this compute-node. Therefore, is there a way to start the program under Linux and preallocate free memory for the process? Something like: $: prealloc -m 25G ./program

• How do I implement a Google Latitude check-in feature on Windows Mobile?

  I hope this is the correct forum. I wish to write a mobile application (MVC 4 mobile app) that extends Google Latitude for Windows Mobile 7 (or version 8 when launched in November). However, according to Google's own website (see http://www.google.com/mobile/latitude/), the check-in feature is not supported on Windows Mobile. So, how would I implement such a feature (not so interested in the UI here) using the technologies that I have mentioned? EDIT The implementation needs to store check-in data against a Google Latitude account.

• How to design this simple database?

  I have 2 tables - one storing user information (id, username, password) and the second one storing information about events (id, name, description, date, username(represents the user who created the event)). I would like to implement 'favourite events' functionality. This would allow the user to store his favourite events and later display them in a list. I am not sure how to implement this in terms of design. I need a simple solution. Something like storing the IDs of favourite events in a field in the user table. I am using mysql and php. Can anyone point me to the right direction?

  I'm trying to get some information (itemID, title, price and mileage) for multiple listings from ebay website using their api . Unfortunately I never worked with php dom and I can't figure it out how to extract the values . I tried to follow the tutorial found on IBM website http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/library/os-xmldomphp/ but I had no success. Some help would be highly appreciated.

• Foreach File in a Folder in Flash?

  Hey, I have an image slideshow program working right now and it takes in a folder of a hard coded in number of images. I would like to change this so that it can take in a folder and will display all of them no matter the number. Is there a way to do this in flash? I'm thinking something like the foreach loop in perl or other scripting language. It is possible to store then number of images in a text file but I also don't know how to read that in flash either. I'm working in actionscript 3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Mike

  I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated

• AS3: Removing EventListeners without knowing amount or names

First shortly about how my site works: When a link is clicked it checks if something is already displayed in either the Left or Right side of the screen (the website looks like a book, so I have a left page I want to display information on and a right page). If there is already something showing it hides it and displays the new object, together with this it enables all the buttons within that object (I have separate functions to set up each object). An example of such an EventListener would be: pathTo.Button1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, function():void {showText(side, object)}); What I'm trying to do is to remove all the previous set EventListeners without having to create separate functions for removing the links inside every object as well. Shorter version: How do I remove all EventListeners on all objects inside another object? The only variable I want to store is the object containing everything. There are however not always EventListeners within the objects.

I have created a external project that contains the default and the es-Es resx files. i have mark it as PublicResXFileCodeGenerator to be able to access it from another dll. on my view i have this test <%=localization.Common.title.ToString() % when i'm run the application i always get this error "Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture. Make sure "localization.Common.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "localization" at compile time, or that all the satellite assemblies required are loadable and fully signed." i have read some this related to ddl signing... but i don't now if this is the problem.

• unknown column in where clause

  $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM Volunteers WHERE Volunteers.eventID = " . $var); $sql = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM Members WHERE Members.pid = " . $temp); I am also doing or die(mysql_error()) at the end of both statements if that matter. My problem is that the first statement executes perfectly but in that table I store an attribute called pid. So the second statement is supposed to take that and return the row where it equals that pid so I can get the name. I get an error that says unknown column in 'a2' in 'where clause' where a2 the pid attribute returned from the first statement. Thanks for any help!

  What is the best way to store images? Currently when an image is uploaded I resize it to 3 different sizes (a thumbnail, a normal size, and a large size). I save in a database a description of the image, the format, and use the id number from the database as the image name. Each size image has its own directory. Should I be storing the images in the database? Should I only be storing the larger size and generate the thumbnail as needed? Or any other ideas you have?

  Hi, Experts: Can you please give some suggestions on sqlite using on the iPhone? Within my application, I use a sqlite DB to store all local data. Two methods can be used to retrieve those data during running time. 1, Load all the data into memory at initialization stage. (More memory used, less DB open/close operation needed) 2, Read corresponding records when necessary, free the occupied memory after using. (Good habit for memory using, but much DB open/close operations needs). I prefer to use method 2, but not sure whether too many DB opening/closing operations could affect app's efficiency. Or do you think I can 'upgrade' method 2 by opening DB when app launches and closing DB when app quits? Thanks for your suggestions very much!

  Using Apache mod_auth_basic and mod_authn_dbd you can authenticate a user by looking up that user's password in the database. I see that working if the password is held in clear, but what if we use a random string as a salt (also stored in the database) then store the hash of the concatenation? mod_authn_dbd requires you to specify a query to select that password not to decide if the user is authenticated of not. So you cannot use that query to concatenate the user provided password with the salt then compare with the stored hash. AuthDBDUserRealmQuery "SELECT password FROM authn WHERE user = %s AND realm = %s" Is there a way to make this work?

  Im wondering whats the best way of storing different types of users in my database. I am writing an application that has 4 main user types (admin, school, teacher, student). At the moment I have a table for each of these but i'm not sure thats the best way of storing user information. For instance... Allowing students to PM other student is simple (store sender and receiver student_id) but enabling teachers to PM students requires another table (sender teacher_id, sender student_id). Should all users be stored in one users table with a user_type field? If so, the teacher / student specific information will still have to be stored in another table. users user_id, password_hash, user_type students user_id, student_specific_stuff... teachers user_id, teacher_specific_stuff... How do I stop a user who has a user_type = student from being accidentally being entered into the teachers table (as both have a user_id) Just want to make sure I get the database correct before i go any further. My question is: Let's say I have the following code.. char* buf = (char*) malloc(1024); ... for(; i<20; i++) { if(read(fd, buf, 1024) == -1) { // read off a file and store in buffer perror("read failed"); return 1; } ... } free(buf); what i'm trying to get at is that - what if an error occurs at read()? does that mean my allocated memory never gets freed? In particular, I've created a class that contains a field of type weka.classifier.Classifier (Weka is a popular machine learning library - see http://weka.sourceforge.net/doc/weka/classifiers/Classifier.html). Classifier implements Serializeable so I hoped that I can get away with something like @Entity @Table(name = "classifiers") public class ClassifierData extends Model { @Id public Long id; public Classifier classifier; } However, the Evolutions script suggests the following database structure: create table classifiers ( id bigint auto_increment not null, constraint pk_classifiers primary key (id)) ) In other words, it ignores the field of type Classifier. (The database is MySQL if it makes any difference) What should I do to store complex serializeable objects using Ebean/Evolutions/PlayFramework?

  I have to send sensitive information (name, address, social security number etc.) collected from a website, that has been entered by a user, to an e-mail address. What is the best course of action to make the information secure and easy to extract on the receiver side? Edit: I will be using ASP.NET for the website, not sure what it has for capabilities on this matter. Edit: If I decide to store the information in a database and just send a mail when a new entry has been made, would this be better? And create some secure way to dump the information instead.

• Cookies ignored on Apache/Magento installation

  I'm running a Magento based website store on Linux/Apache. In order that user logins are maintained, I've set my cookie lifetime to be close to two years. The cookies are sent out with the right times, I can see them in my browsers. When I visit the site from a previously logged-in browser after about a day, the user is logged out. I can still see the cookies, with their extended life, present in the browser. Where should I start looking to get to the bottom of this issue?

  I am working on a project to convert OCR'd PDf to png using ImageMagick and ghostscript and display in the browser so that i can select words in the image by letting a user query for the word . Imagemagick works fine along with ghostscript . I have a problem with the ps2text utility where it does not work reliably with pdf's . could anybody suggest a good utility to convert postscript to text in Linux so that i can store it in a db . thereafter i use a custom written search class to find out the co-ordinates of each word and highlight the text in the browser . • Automatically CONCATENATE text on data entry

  I am a newbie and need help. I have a table called "Employees". It has 2 fields [number] and [encode]. I want to automatically take whatever number is entered into [number] and store it in [encode] so that it is preceded by the appropriate amount of 0's to always make 12 digits. Example: user enters '123' into [number], '000000000123' is automatically stored in [encode] user enters '123456789' into [number], '000123456789' is automatically stored in [encode] I think i want to write a trigger to accomplish this. I think that would make it happen at the time of data entry. is that right? The main idea is would be something like this: variable1 = LENGTH [number] variable2 = REPEAT (0,12-variable1) variable3 = CONCATENATE (variable2, [number]) [encode] = variable3 I just don't know enough to make this happen ANY help would be FANTASTIC.
