  I am working on a project to convert OCR'd PDf to png using ImageMagick and ghostscript and display in the browser so that i can select words in the image by letting a user query for the word . Imagemagick works fine along with ghostscript . I have a problem with the ps2text utility where it does not work reliably with pdf's . could anybody suggest a good utility to convert postscript to text in Linux so that i can store it in a db . thereafter i use a custom written search class to find out the co-ordinates of each word and highlight the text in the browser .   Recently I have noticed a number of questions on SO that look something like this: I am writing a small program to keep a list of the songs that I keep on my ipod. I'm thinking about writing it as a 3-tier MVC Ruby on Rails web application with TDD, DDD and IOC, using a factory pattern to create the classes and a singleton to store my application settings. Do you think I'm taking the right approach? Do you think that we're handing novice programmers a very sharp knife and telling them, "Don't cut yourself with this"? • storing crontab php outputs in a log file

I want to store the errors that occur in route.php in cron.log This works wonderfully when I run : php /home/admin/public_html/domain.com/public/cron/route.php &>> /home/admin/public_html/domain.com/log/cron.log through the command line manually. But when crontab runs it no errors gets stored in cron.log the cron.log is owned by admin:admin and the permissions are set to 777 just to be sure. anyone?

  I'm working on an asp.net mvc application. Each user have his own time zone. Right now, I'm using "TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones" to generate a drop down list in order for the user to select a timezone and this is what I store in my db They are like that: Morocco Standard Time (00:00:00) UTC (00:00:00) GMT Standard Time (00:00:00) ... I know that php use a different timezone set, they are "region timezone", for example: Europe/Paris Europe/London ... My question is: is there a way to play with the region timezone (like php) in an .NET application? The only way I can think of is to bind each php region timezone to the .net timezone. Also, the "TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones" list all of the timezone on the machine. Is the list different between windows server, windows vista, windows xp? Hope this make sense, thanks guys

When I try to do a JPA query like this: "SELECT p FROM Participant p WHERE p.party.id = :partyKey AND p.name=:participantName" I get the following error Caused by: org.datanucleus.store.appengine.FatalNucleusUserException: SELECT FROM Participant p WHERE p.party.id = :partyKey AND p.name=:participantName: Can only reference properties of a sub-object if the sub-object is embedded. I gave the key of the Party object as a parameter to the "partyKey" named parameter. The model is like this: Party has multiple Participants. I want to query a participant based on the party and the name of the participant. I just can't figure out how to filter using the party. What options do I have?

  Is it possible to combine the following properties, and if so, how? Store in our version control system some Visual Studio 2008 native C++ project files for the developers in our team that use this IDE. Allow some of those developers to tweak their projects (e.g. using debug version of third-party libraries instead of the usual ones). Make sure these modifications are done in files that are not versioned. In other words, I would like to allow developers to tweak some settings in their projects without risking that these changes are committed. An 'optional VSPROP' file approach seems doomed to fail, as VS2008 refuses to load projects that refer to non-existent VSPROP files... Any other suggestion? Is this possible with VS2010?

• best way to output a full precision double into a text file

  Hi, I need to use an existing text file to store some very precise values. When read back in, the numbers essentially need to be exactly equivalent to the ones that were originally written. Now, a normal person would use a binary file... for a number of reasons, that's not possible in this case. So... do any of you have a good way of encoding a double as a string of characters (aside from increasing the precision). My first thought was to cast the double to a char[] and write out the chars. I don't think that's going to work because some of the characters are not visible, produce sounds, and even terminate strings ('\0'... I'm talkin to you!) Thoughts?

• Can I use PayPal to charge a Credit Card automatically?

  If I have a Visa card number saved in my database, is there a way I can charge that Visa automatically through the PayPal API without the user having to enter anything? We want to keep this site as easy and hassle-free to use as possible. It would be a variable amount, based on how they use the site. (Don't worry, proper disclaimers will be in place, and the user will be notified) What about these "recurring payments"? That way I don't have to store the CC info on my website, but do they allow variable amounts that I could periodically send to PayPal?

• VisualSVN Server + Trac Authentication Problems

  I have Trac set up on my VisualSVN server (using Subversion authentication), however every time I navigate to the Trac home page after opening the browser, I get the basic authentication dialog asking me for my username/password. What I would like to do is have a login form in Trac, which would allow me to log in forever using cookies. I have tried installing the AccountManagerPlugin, but I am completely unsure of how to correctly set it up. (I am used to working with IIS on corporate intranets, so this is kind of alien to me) I have managed to bypass the basic authentication dialog by setting this in my httpd-custom.conf: AuthName "Trac" AuthType Basic AuthBasicProvider file AuthUserFile "E:/Repositories/htpasswd" #Require valid-user I have tried using SvnServePasswordStore as my password store but I do not know which of the files in the repository directory to point it at. Help would be appreciated!

• How do I include extremely long literals in C++ source?

  Hello everyone :) I've got a bit of a problem. Essentially, I need to store a large list of whitelisted entries inside my program, and I'd like to include such a list directly -- I don't want to have to distribute other libraries and such, and I don't want to embed the strings into a Win32 resource, for a bunch of reasons I don't want to go into right now. I simply included my big whitelist in my .cpp file, and was presented with this error: 1>ServicesWhitelist.cpp(2807): fatal error C1091: compiler limit: string exceeds 65535 bytes in length The string itself is about twice this allowed limit by VC++. What's the best way to include such a large literal in a program?

EDIT: I know that technically all these snippets are just javascript scripts that gets evaluated by the browser as if they were defined in the page. I also know that many browsers have got extensions to let you run javascript code (also letting you store scripts somewhere, providing a good editor etc etc). However that's not so practical; I'm not a javascript developer, haven't got firebug installed, and I can't install it anywhere I go. My idea idea is that of collecting the best "mini-scripts" that whoever can just copy and paste in his browser without the need of installing extensions and stuff.

• Storing cvs data for further manipulation using Ruby

  I am dealing with a csv file that has some customer information (email, name, address, amount, [shopping_list: item 1, item 2]). I would like work with the data and produce some labels for printing... as well as to gather some extra information (total amounts, total items 1...) My main concern is to find the appropriate structure to store the data in ruby for future manipulation. For now I have thought about the following possibilities: multidimensional arrays: pretty simple to build, but pretty hard to access the data in a beautiful ruby way. hashes: having the email as key, and storing the information in different hashes (one hash for name, another hash for address, another hash for shopping list...) (getting the cvs data in to a Database and working with the data from ruby??) I would really appreciate your advice and guidance!!

• Problem with updating multiple rows which are in conflict with unique index

  I am using Microsoft SQL Server and I have a master-detail scenario where I need to store the order of details. So in the Detail table I have ID, MasterID, Position and some other columns. There is also a unique index on MasterID and Position. It works OK except one case: when I have some existing details and I change their order. For example when I change a detail on position 3 with a detail on position 2. When I save the detail on position 2 (which in the database has Position equal to 3) SQL Server protests, because the index uniqueness constraint. How to solve this problem in a reasonable way?   I have this method, isPalindrome(), and I am trying to find the time complexity of it, and also rewrite the code more efficiently. boolean isPalindrome(String s) { boolean bP = true; for(int i=0; i<s.length(); i++) { if(s.charAt(i) != s.charAt(s.length()-i-1)) { bP = false; } } return bP; } Now I know this code checks the string's characters to see whether it is the same as the one before it and if it is then it doesn't change bP. And I think I know that the operations are s.length(), s.charAt(i) and s.charAt(s.length()-i-!)). Making the time-complexity O(N + 3), I think? This correct, if not what is it and how is that figured out. Also to make this more efficient, would it be good to store the character in temporary strings?

• [JavaScript] How can I load static configuration information

  In my code, I use JavaScript for UI and PHP for back end. I also use PHP to store application settings and sometimes my UI code needs to access this information. My configuration file looks something like this (config.php): $resolution_x = 1920; $resolution_y = 1080; etc... When I need to access any of these settings form JavaScript, i simply use to substitute the value directly, but it just doesn't strike me as very robust. • Handling Incoming Data from Multiple Sockets in Python

  Background: I have a current implementation that receives data from about 120 different socket connections in python. In my current implementation, I handle each of these separate socket connections with a dedicated thread for each. Each of these threads parse the data and eventually store it within a shared locked dictionary. These sockets DO NOT have uniform data rates, some sockets get more data than others. Question: Is this the best way to handle incoming data in python, or does python have a better way on handling multiple sockets per thread?

  I am working on Solaris 10, Sun Studio 11. I am refactoring some old code, and trying to write unit tests for them. My make file looks like: my_model.o:my_model.cc CC -c my_model.cc -I/../../include -library=stlport4 -instances=extern unit_test: unit_test.o my_model.o symbol_dictionary.o CC -o unit_test unit_test.o my_model.o symbol_dictionary.o -I../../include \ -library=stlport4 -instances=extern unit_test.o: unit_test.cc CC -c unit_test.cc -I/../../include -library=stlport4 -instances=extern symbol_dictionary.o: cd ../../test-fixtures && ($MAKE) symbol_dictionary.o mv ../../test-fixtures/symbol_dictionary.o . In the ../../test-fixtures makefile, I have the following target: symbol_dictionary.o: CC -c symbol_dictionary.cc -I/../../include -library=stlport4 -instances=extern I do the instances=extern because I had linking problems before, and this was the recommended solution. The consequence is in each directory that is being compiled, a SunWS_Cache directory is created to store the template instances. This is the long way to get to this question. Is it a standard practice to consolidate object files in a single directory before you link them?

• Really lost with OpenID and ASP.NET MVC

  I'm attempting to implement OpenID with ASP.NET MVC (Yeah, we haven't heard that one before I'm sure!) That really isn't the big problem, though. My huge problem is that I am exceedingly confused about how to do this alongside an application that will need to store a lot of information about the logged in users (profiles, histories, etc) It seems to me that OpenID takes away the site-centric logic and makes it, well, open. This is all well and good if you just make an authentication ticket to be seen as a 'validated' user - but in all seriousness I am completely lost. Is it possible to implement OpenID such that logging in with it will allow users to 'exist' on my own application as if they had gone through normal registration?

• PHP/MySQL: Storing and retrieving UUIDS

  I'm trying to add UUIDs to a couple of tables, but I'm not sure what the best way to store/retrieve these would be. I understand it's far more efficient to use BINARY(16) instead of VARCHAR(36). After doing a bit of research, I also found that you can convert a UUID string to binary with: UNHEX(REPLACE(UUID(),'-','')) Pardon my ignorance, but is there an easy way to this with PHP and then turn it back to a string, when needed, for readability? Also, would it make much difference if I used this as a primary key instead of auto_increment? EDIT: Found part of the answer: $bin = pack("h*", str_replace('-', '', $guid)); How would you unpack it?
