• New way of integrating Openfeint in Cocos2d-x 0.12.0

  I am trying to implement OpenFeint for Android in my cocos2d-x project. My approach so far has been creating a button that calls a static java method in class Bridge using jnihelper functions (jnihelper only accepts statics). Bridge has one singleton attribute of type OFAndroid, that is the class dynamically calling the Openfeint Api methods, and every method in the bridge just forwards it to the OFAndroid object. What I am trying to do now is to initialize the openfeint libraries in the main java class that is the one calling the static C++ libraries. My problem right now is that the initializing function void com.openfeint.api.OpenFeint.initialize(Context ctx, OpenFeintSettings settings, OpenFeintDelegate delegate) is not accepting the context parameter that I am giving him, which is a "this" reference to the main class. Main class extends from Cocos2dxActivity but I don't have any other that extends from Application. Any suggestions on fixing it or how to improve the architecture? EDIT: I am trying a new solution. Make the bridge class into an Application child, is called from Main object, initializes OpenFeint when created and it can call the OpenFeint functions instead of needing an additional class. • Why is Samba Access from Windows So Slow?

  I have set up a file server using Ubuntu 12.04 Server. The purpose is to serve several network drives to Windows users that have heretofore been served by numerous NAS drives. I have Samba set up with one share defined so far. I can connect to it fine from my test Windows 7 and Windows XP machines. When I do a directory listing on the share from Windows, it can take up to two minutes to get all the files listed--would have taken about 1.5 seconds when I was using the Buffalo NAS. Sometimes it times out with no response at all. I have used the default smb.conf and simply added the following for the share I have set up so far: [engineering] comment = Ubuntu File Server Share path = /networkdriveshares/engineering browsable = yes guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0755 I have tried changing the workgroup setting to the Active Domain name our Windows computer use but didn't notice any difference. The only other change I made to the default smb.conf was adding in the recommended socket settings: SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 socket options = TCP_NODELAY Lots of information about slow Samba shares online but I have tried all of the solutions I have found and none have made a lick of difference. If there is no solution, is there a better way to set up a file server to be used by Windows clients?

• What methods should save/load a game state

  There are a lot of articles about how to save a state of a game and they are pretty good. But I have one conceptual misunderstanding where should I save the state? My game has number of screens and pair of them are MainMenuScreen and MainSceneScreen these are inherited from Screen class. MainMenuScreen is shown at start of the game the MainSceneScreen little later. What is the problem? I navigated to MainSceneScreen, forced Android to stop the application (I change a language settings on the device to achieve it, please let me know if I'm wrong). After that I select the application again and I can see MainMenuScreen is shown. But I want MainSceneScreen to be shown. I suppose I should override resume method. But what class I should override? I have class PsGame that extends Game class of libgdx. I put breakpoints to its resume method and it turned out that method was not called. I investigated the problem and I've found little strange code in onResume method of AndroidApplication class of libgdx: if (!firstResume) graphics.resume(); else firstResume = false; My debugger said firstResume was true and didn't go to *graphics.resume()*line. Sorry for a lot of words but could you answer following question: What did I do wrong? What methods should I override? Thank you in advance.

• Alt+Tab doesn't work when Citrix is in full screen

  I am using 12.04 and in my work we connect to a Citrix XenDesktop. I've installed Citrix Receiver, using this link and it all works perfectly. But, I have a problem. Alt+Tab doesn't work in full screen mode. There are several adjustments you can choose when login in, with the Settings "button" up in the right corner. (Sorry, I couldn't post an image because I'm new.) I like to work with 95% full screen, with the windows key combination in "full screen mode only". This allows me to use the windows combinations when a work in full screen, inside the remote computer (inside Citrix). I can Alt+Tab past the "Citrix computer" when I put it down to 95%. It also allows me to use the "Ubuntu menu" on the left side. But I really can't make this work in Ubuntu. I've tried to put the windows key combination to "remote server only" and yes, it works inside the server, but also only there and the Ubuntu menu stops working. (in example print Screen. I am using this for documentation.) When I try to Tab from one place to another, even when Citrix isn't in full mode, if I stop there and the continue "tabbing" it continues inside Citrix. I want to use windows key combination, but only in full screen mode. Does anyone have a solution to fix in another way?

• Question about mipmaps + anisotropic filtering

  I'm a bit confused here and maybe someone can explain this to me. I created a simple test texture for my terrain which is nothing more than a solid green color with a black grid overlayed on top of it. If I look at the terrain in the distance with mipmapping on and linear filtering, the grid lines become blurry fairly quickly and further back the grid is pretty much invisible. With these settings, I don't get any moire patterns at all. If I turn on anisotropic filtering, however, the higher the anisotropic level, the more the terrain looks like it did with without mipmapping. The lines are much crisper nearby but in the distance I start to see terrible moire patterns. My understanding was that mipmapping is supposed to get rid of moire patterns. I've always had anisotropic filtering on in every game I play and I've never noticed any moire patterns as a result, so I don't understand why it's happening in my game. I am using logarithmic depth however, could that be causing any problems? And if it is, how do I resolve it? • Exporting PowerPoint Slides with Specific Heights and Widths

  I found myself in need of exporting PowerPoint slides from a presentation and was fairly excited when I found that you could save them off in standard image formats. • Handling Deployment to Multiple Environments

  How should I handle deploying web applications to multiple servers? Constraints I have a dev, test and prod environment. No build server is available. Developers can't deploy to prod. The people that do deploy to prod copy files from test to prod. They don't have VS installed. Currently The way it's handled is using web.config transform. However, to deploy to prod involves putting prod code on the test server where it's copied over. Problem Sometimes simple mistakes are made, such as forgetting to change test back to the right environment after deployment. Or the test config gets moved to prod instead of the prod config. Solution So the question is, what is the best way to prevent mistakes from happening? My first thought is let the app determine which server it's on at runtime and use the appropriate settings/connection strings/etc... However, the server names could change in the not too distant future. So if multiple apps are hard coded, that would mean updating all of them. The easiest way to handle that situation would be to place a DLL in the GAC that determines the environment. Are there any drawbacks or possible complications that this would cause? Or is there a better solution to the problem than this?

  I just uploaded two new releases to Codeplex. IdentityServer B1 refresh A number of bug fixes and streamlined extensibility interfaces. Mostly a result of adding the Windows Azure support. Nothing has changed with regards to setup. Make sure you watch the intro video on the Codeplex site. IdentityServer B1 (Windows Azure Edition) I have now implemented all repositories for Windows Azure backed data storage. The default setup assumes you use the ASP.NET SQL membership provider database in SQL Azure and Table Storage for relying party, client certificates and delegation settings. The setup is simple: Upload your SSL/signing certificate via the portal Adjust the .cscfg file – you need to insert your storage account, certificate thumbprint and distinguished name There is a setup tool that can automatically insert the certificate distinguished names into your config file Adjust the connection string for the membership database in WebSite\configuration\connectionString.config Deploy Feedback Feature-wise this looks like the V1 release to me. • Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

  A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user. • How to handle wildly varying rendering hardware / getting baseline

  I've recently started with mobile programming (cross-platform, also with desktop) and am encountering wildly differing hardware performance, in particular with OpenGL and the GPU. I know I'll basically have to adjust my rendering code but I'm uncertain of how to detect performance and what reasonable default settings are. I notice that certain shader functions are basically free in a desktop implemenation but can be unusable in a mobile device. The problem is I have no way of knowing what features will cause what performance issues on all the devices. So my first issue is that even if I allow configuring options I'm uncertain of which options I have to make configurable. I'm wondering also wheher one just writes one very configurable pipeline, or whether I should have 2 distinct options (high/low). I'm also unsure of where to set the default. If I set to the poorest performer the graphics will be so minimal that any user with a modern device would dismiss the game. If I set them even at some moderate point, the low end devices will basically become a slide-show. I was thinking perhaps that I just run some benchmarks when the user first installs and randomly guess what works, but I've not see a game do this before.

• Kubuntu 12.04 - DNS Issues

  Starting yesterday (6/11/12), I've been having many network problems. When requesting a page in chrome, the page hangs on "Sending request" and then will eventually timeout. I'm within a VPN that has it's own DNS server. I've tried to manually set my DNS through the Network-Manager applet and by editing /etc/network/interfaces. Having no luck I unlinked the resolv.conf file and dumped the contents of my old resolv.conf into it. Again having no luck, I deactivated the dnsmasq server in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf by commenting out the dns=dnsmasq. $ cat NetworkManager.conf [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile #dns=dnsmasq no-auto-default=D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B, [ifupdown] managed=false $ nm-tool NetworkManager Tool State: connected (global) - Device: eth0 [Wired connection 1] ------------------------------------------- Type: Wired Driver: tg3 State: connected Default: yes HW Address: D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B Capabilities: Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 1000 Mb/s Wired Properties Carrier: on IPv4 Settings: Address: 192.168.254.122 Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0) Gateway: 192.168.254.2 DNS: 192.168.254.1 What is strange is that the network will work fine for a few minutes then start to timeout. A few minutes later it will work again. I'm unable to hit internal or external sites when it is timing out. When I $dig local sites, I receive no answer. I do receive an answer from google.com. At this point, I would usually blame the DNS Server, especially since when I change to Google's DNS server things work. But, I need to use our internal DNS to hit our internal sites. Nobody else is having issues and they are all using DHCP. This group includes one user who is using 11.04. At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do, so any help would be appreciated.

• Setting up VPS: How to configure name servers

  So I got a VPS set up (LAMP) and have transfered a couple of sites over. Now I want to point my domain names from the old host to the new VPS host, which does not have any name servers yet. On my registrars console I have set the domain name 'www.mydomain.com' domain host settings to point to my VPS's ip address, eg: ns1.mydomain.com = 111.222.3.4 and ns2.mydomain.com = 111.222.3.4 I then lowered the TTL to one hour. I then switched the Nameservers on that domain to these new ones. (ns1/2.mydomain.com) In WHM I then set the servers name servers to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. I waited an hour to test...but nothing changed - the domain name still directed to the old host. Have I missed something? Is the some other record I need to change on the DNS? I find this very confusing, does anyone know a resource or can provide a step by step guide on how to configure a new servers nameservers? Thanks EDIT: added image (sorry bout the censoring. • Syncing sharepoint 2010 with outlook

  Technorati Tags: Sharepoint 2010,Outlook SharePoint offers the possibility to connect to content in a Document Library directly from Outlook, edit the documents offline and then sync when connection is restored. This is very useful if we are working at home and we want to access a shared document (ex. VPN connection settings) or continue working directly on a file. Steps to configure the connection: 1. Browse online to SharePoint Document library you want to connect and click on "Connect to Outlook": (click to enlarge) 2. Click Allow to confirm: 3. In Outlook you will see the documents as outlook email items with the ability to preview them. When a document is updated, Outlook will notify you that you have items unread. If you want to edit a file, the corresponding office tool (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) will ask if you want to update the server after saving a change, it is really straightforward. • Where&rsquo;s my start button?

  I have to be honest here for a moment. The one thing people most complain about when they talk about Windows 8 is that they miss the Start Button. You know, that dreaded thing that everybody hated when it was introduced… I usually don’t go into these kinds of discussions unless I am personally involved but this one I cannot let go. Why are people doing this? Windows 8 is a great OS. They have changed, updated and perfected so many things so there is enough to talk or write about. Yet, all articles or discussions come down to “Where’s my start button?” In order to save myself from having to explain this every single time I wrote this post and from now on I will simply refer to this blog when I get asked that question. Here it is. Your start menu is there. It’s right in front of your nose. It’s two dimensional, it’s got huge buttons (although they are more than just buttons, they’re alive and therefore called Live Tiles). Just go through those tiles and click what ever you want to start up. Don’t want to look for an item? Just start typing. Really it is that simple. When you are on the start screen just start typing (part of) the name of the program you want and you’ll find it.  As you see in the attached example I started typing “word” and it found Word, Wordfeud, Wordament etc. If you want to find something else besides a program (say you want to change the region you’re in) just click on Settings (it will already show you how many hits there are in that section). People, my request is: dive into something before you complain about it. Look around. This feature is so much easier to use than the old stuff. But you have to know about it. So. I won’t get into this discussion anymore.
