• Disable laptop's display on boot when used with external display

  I keep my laptop tucked away and solely use an external display with it via HDMI. In Windows 7 display settings, I have it set up to "Show desktop only on 2 [my external display]" This works fine in all cases except when I boot the laptop when the external display is already connected. In that case, the laptop's display stays on and sticks at the Windows 7 boot logo unless I manually shut the display off. (I should mention that while the laptop's display is stuck at the boot logo, the external monitor and computer are running just fine.) The laptop is an Asus N56VZ with Nvidia 650m graphics and the latest drivers. I've checked Nvidia's control panel as well as the BIOS and nothing looked very promising. Any ideas as to how I can get my laptop screen to shut itself off after booting into Windows?

My hardware specifications for the nebtook: -Be rugged enough to survive a bit of wear and tear -Fairly fast processing (the ability to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB) -A battery life of longer than 6 hours -At least a 10 inch screen -A decent camera for Skyping My software needs: -Be able run a Spreadsheet program to do basic data input (like Excel or Open Office) -Use the Open Source Statistical Program R to do basic data analysis (Regression, data analysis etc.) -Word Processing (Word or Open Office) Do you have any suggestions on which models or brands my fit my needs? • How to fix choppy video with VLC player?

  When playing most movies in VLC player, the video feed is choppy. Furthermore, the sound is near perfect. Another catch is, this video issue wasn't always an issue. I use to play movies with no problem with video or sound. I can not pin point what has changed between the it use to work fine and the time it started being choppy though. I have an ASUS G73JW-A1. This system should be more than enough to handle the demand of playing HD videos. Movies that are normally effected are HD videos. These video range from 4 to 9 gigs. In addition, the videos are in MKV, MP4 (or M4V), and AVCHD (or M2TS) formats. I get the same results when playing move directly off my hard drive or off an external. Finally, all the drivers have been recently checked and updated if needed.

• Suspended Laptop Cannot Wake Up - Ubuntu

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue?

• Vista x64: Improving troubleshoot approach skills

  I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally.   I am having DD-WRT v24-sp2(05/08/11) running on Asus RT n 13 u B1 router,with dhcp on. But users not able to connect through wifi...its showing obtaining ip address and disconnects there after. Wired Devices are getting ip address and able to access internet.Wifi was working till yesterday,but all of a sudden it stopped working. on the ddwrt controlpanelsystem information under Wireless Clients mac address of clients that are trying to connect are appearing but soon it disappears. but no such issue with wired clients.   I'm looking for a new WiFi router, and one key feature for me is WOL. Seems like many routers won't do this w/ factory firmware. Given my last router (Asus WL-520g) turned into a disco-brick couple hours after flashed to dd-wrt I'd prefer if the new one supported WOL out-of-the-box. other required features would be: dyndns service support port forwarding sometimes it is called "virtual server" I guess NAT loopback so I can access services running in my own network using dyndns hostname or public IP w/o getting too old (for example DIR-615 with factory firmware lets you wait literally minutes) did I mention WiFi? preferably w/ some range extending technology, if such stuff works at all

• Networking not working in Windows 7 - "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services"

  I have a homebuilt computer with a GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard with a Realtek RTL8111E LAN chip. Ethernet was working fine in Windows 7 until I reinstalled this OS, but now it's stopped, while still working in other OSes. I've tried reinstalling drivers from both the Gigabyte and Realtek sites to no avail; I've also plugged in and installed an Asus USB-N13 wifi dongle and this doesn't work oddly. How can I diagnose and fix this issue? In 'Network and Sharing Center' says "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process" under the heading 'Unknown'. Following the advice at http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/130159-dependency-service-group-failed-start.html#post1122627 I've gone to 'Control Panel= Admin Tools= Services' and ensured the services listed at that URL are started (one - IIRC 'Come+ Event System' refused to start as user 'Local services' so I've had to set it to log on with the 'Local system account'... I suspect this may be part of the problem).

  i have gotten the error in the microsoft KB article 975778 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us) i was able to get onto my computer luckily, but when i went on to get the hotfix that is stated in the article, it gave me this error when i ran it: "the update is not applicable to your computer." is there any way of getting the disk check error to stop, or to get this fix to work. i will answer any questions on hardware if you post the questions in the comments. answers to questions this is the a full version that i got from ASUS as an upgrade disk from windows vista (hopefully more specific than you were asking)

• Unable to create system partition or locate existing system partition during Windows-7 installation

  I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with 2x 500gb drives in RAID1 using the NV RAID controller. On this there are 3 partitions (XP, XP backup and DATA) There are also 4x 500gb drives in RAID10 using the Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy? EDIT: As suggested on another forum, I tried downloading the nVidia Mainboard RAID drivers for Windows 2003 64-bit. I loaded the drivers successfully using the Load Driver button, but pressing NEXT still returns this error.

• Why maximum 1.0 Gbit Ethernet connection an old notebook, and only 100 Mbit on newer faster computer

  Strange problem about Ethernet speed: recently we bought an i7 core computer running Win7 64 bit with an onboard Gigabit Ethernet controller (Realtek PCIe Gbit Ethernet Family controller). Connecting this new fast pc directly to our brand new ASUS Gigabit Ethernet router via CAT6 cable(!) shows up the adapter status (see picture attached) only 100mbit, while the router is capable of 1000 mbit. More facts: Connecting an 8 year old IBM notebook with gigabit ethernet to the same cable end shows 1.0 Gbit connection in its adapter status. Speedtest.net shows 35 mbit/s down on the new computer Speedtest.net shows 78 mbit/s down on the old rusty IBM notebook. We have an 120 mbit down internet connection, which we we truly receive on another pc (also directly connected to the router) How to get the 1.0 Gbit going in the new pc ?

• Wake on Lan/Wan won't work after some time has passsed

  I have the following set up: Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Wake On Lan Enabled Asus N66U Port Forwarding Static IP assigned to my computer Windows 7 Advanced Power Management - PCI Express - Off Intel 82579V - All options under Power Management checked I'm trying to set this up for Wake on Wan capabilities. If I shut down my computer and immediately try to Wake on Wan (and Lan) it works and starts up. While the computer is on, I've used a few WOL specific packet sniffers and the packet comes through on the correct port. After any period of time over a few minutes, waking on Wan or Lan won't work. The back "activity" light is blinking on my ethernet port on my computer, as well as on the router, so I would assume the network card is on and able to receive a signal. Any ideas? Suggestions? What can I do to troubleshoot the problem?

• Computer Randomly Restarts (no crash dump)

  Hey everyone this is my first time here, so, my computer got pulled out of his place the other day by accident and it never got back to working decently ever again. I just stopped using it because everytime i power it on, it restarts. Some times it doesn't even reach the desktop, others it even allows me to run a game or something. It gets really random. Today i was trying my last attempt before sending it to fix and it ran fine for 40 minutes but as i tried to run a game the screen got really messeud up full of colorful lines and stuff and i'm assuming it had to do with the graphics card. Altho, my question is, what can be causing all this restart thingie? Can it be just the Power Supply failing me and hence, not giving enough power to make the graphic card go for instance? • I bought a motherboard that supports DDR3 RAM

  I bought this ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard from http://msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7301 But I'm not sure what DDR3 RAM to buy. I haven't built a PC from scratch in about 3 years, and I'm wondering the following Do DDR3 ram chips need to be installed in three at a time? Or can I just install one or two now and install more later without any particular pattern? If I buy 2000MHz RAM from Corsair, will that work at 1866 MHz? (which is the highest frequency the motherboard supports) Is it just me or is 1866 RAM not around? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I'd like to find a small linux box with the following specifications: Small (mini-ITX size is OK) Fanless Runs Debian At least two gigabit network interfaces WLAN that supports "host ap" with hostapd + mac80211 in AP mode Can encrypt AES at least 10 megabytes per second Total cost $300 or less Solutions from multiple parts also accepted - I can buy an external network card etc. and build the box myself if the components are available. If you don't know about the "host ap" thing, just suggest your solution, I'll find out if I can get that resolved. If I can't get all that, I can possibly skip the "runs Debian" part, and I can definitely skip the hostapd part if the box can be a wireless access point with multiple ESSIDs out of the box. Something like Asus RT-N16 is close - doesn't run Debian easily, and probably doesn't encrypt AES fast enough. Something like Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11 is also close - no idea which WLAN card it has and it lacks second gigabit interface, but otherwise nice.

• How to install the TRIM RAID update for the Intel storage controller?

  I just found this article, that says that Intel now supports TRIM for SSDs when the Intel storage controller is in RAID mode. It links to this download page. I'm pretty excited about that, but I'm a little confused. There seem to be two sets of drivers, an executable and something that's bootable. I ran the executable. Is that just to apply the drivers to my system now, and are the bootable drivers so that if I re-format, I won't have to re-run everything? Do I need to do both? And is there a way to check if it worked? I'm running an i7 in Windows 7 (ASUS P6T Deluxe Motherboard) with RAID 0, if that's significant.

• My Smart-Pad doesn't work, even when I activate it

  I have an Asus X5DIJ, and I have had it since Christmas. However, today, the Smart-Pad stopped working. I wasn't clicking anything, I was just typing. Someone suggested downloading drivers, and I'm not to good with guides, so can anyone assist me? Also, when I click on the Smart-Pad icon in the notification area, that icon is crossed out. There is a red X over it, no matter if it is on / off. Can anyone help me, this has happened to my cousin who has the same laptop as me, he now uses a mouse, but I'd rather keep the Smart - Pad.

  I have Asterisk/1.8.13.1 Asterisk GUI-version : SVN--r Yes, quite old one, but I can not update it since this is installed on my Synology NAS. NAS is connected to internet thru router Asus RT-N16. I should use the following data to connect to the server: Auth name – 7499952XXXX User name/User ID/Display Name – nickname Authorization user name - [email protected] Domain - sip.beeline.ru SIP proxy server - msk.sip.beeline.ru I've also found the following string: [email protected]:password:[email protected]@msk.sip.beeline.ru:5060/7499952XXXX I've tested the parameters on my PC thru X-Lite and it works well (so, assume there is no any problem with the router, no need to do anything with router's NAS settings). But since I am quite new to Asterisk, I can not understand where to input all these data. Asterisk GUI doesn't have fields for proxy: Can somebody please help me with step-by-step instruction? • Unable to connect to network

  Hey guys, I have a question. I have been having problems connecting a new netbook to my network at home. I have an Asus Eeepc 100HAB. I have tried to run a repair on the connection, uninstalled and re-installed the network card, made sure all of the drivers are up-to-date as well. Two caveats: I have a laptop that I recently switched to a wired connection because it wasn't connecting to the network as well, and the netbook connects to an unsecured network i found just fine, only having a problem getting into my home network. Passwords are correct, and the computer where the connection originates from is working fine as well. Any ideas?

  I have been reinstalling windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately looses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up loosing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and visual studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

• Getting a black laptop screen

  I get a black screen when I boot my laptop. The laptop was in sleep mode initially, so when I pressed the power button, it looked as if it woke up from sleep mode, but the screen was blank. So, I held down the power button to force shutdown the laptop and then removed the battery. But after booting the laptop the screen still remains black. The bios/boot screen remains black as well. I have tried connecting it to external hdmi/vga/s-video devices and booting still no go. Windows loads fine, as I can type the password and get the 'Ding', then alt-f4 and shutdown windows. If it helps, the laptop model is Asus G1S-A1. Thanks in advance!

• Wireless DHCP doesn't work until wired Ethernet plugged in

  A client of mine has an Asus R1F tablet running Windows XP Tablet SP3. It has an Intel 3945ABG wireless card; wired Ethernet is a Realtek something-or-other. In the past few days, it's developed an odd problem: WiFi authenticates, but can't get an address via DHCP. plug in wired Ethernet - both interfaces get good addresses unplug cable, WiFi continues to work until shutdown. Next morning, repeat process. I've tried: turning WiFi off/on (there's a slider switch) disabling/re-enabling via Device Mangler uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the 3945ABG... changing from Intel Pro/SET to Windows Wireless Zero Config (and back) restarting the router changing the static DHCP assignments at the router upgrading the router firmware, just on general principles The router/access point is pfSense 1.2.3RC1 (was 1.2.2); wireless card is Atheros-based. None of the 12 other users (5 with tablets) are having problems.

• NIC: Changing Link Speed & Duplex to Full Duplex Is Drastically Slower

  I have an old Win Xp box with a 100 PRO/100 VE NIC and connecting to a Win 7 box with gigabit NIC via an ASUS gigabit router and peer to peer. I was getting 76% network utilisation on the XP machine using AUTO as the value for Link Speed and Duplex which is fine. But I decided to see what would happen if i selected Full Duplex 100Mbps on the XP box. I thought at worst it would be as good as auto detect since the Win 7 box it's transferring to is faster. Instead network utilisation dropped to 0.12% (as in a 10th of a percent) and the transfers just timed out. No biggie to reverse back to Auto but my question is why is full duplex such a dog? Im not "stuck" but just dont understand. There are only 2 machines here connecting through a router so i cant see how that would cause alot of collisions etc (if thats the problem).
