  • Issues with LVM partition size in Server 13.04

    - by Michael
I am new to ubuntu and a little confused about how hard drive partitions and LVM works. I remember setting up Ubuntu server 13.04 and telling to to use 1TB of a 3TB server. Well I have maxed that out with blu-ray rips and want the rest of the drive for space. On log-in it says: System load: 2.24 Processes: 179 Usage of /: 88.7% of 912.89GB Users logged in: 0 Memory usage: 6% IP address for p5p1: 192.168.0.100 Swap usage: 0% => / is using 88.7% of 912.89GB lvdisplay outputs: --- Logical volume --- LV Path /dev/DeathStar-vg/root LV Name root VG Name DeathStar-vg LV Write Access read/write LV Creation host, time DeathStar, 2013-05-18 22:21:11 -0400 LV Status available # open 1 LV Size 2.70 TiB Current LE 707789 Segments 2 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 252:0 --- Logical volume --- LV Path /dev/DeathStar-vg/swap_1 LV Name swap_1 VG Name DeathStar-vg LV Write Access read/write LV Creation host, time DeathStar, 2013-05-18 22:21:11 -0400 LV Status available # open 2 LV Size 3.75 GiB Current LE 959 Segments 1 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 252:1 vgdisplay outputs: VG Name DeathStar-vg System ID Format lvm2 Metadata Areas 1 Metadata Sequence No 4 VG Access read/write VG Status resizable MAX LV 0 Cur LV 2 Open LV 2 Max PV 0 Cur PV 1 Act PV 1 VG Size 2.73 TiB PE Size 4.00 MiB Total PE 715335 Alloc PE / Size 708748 / 2.70 TiB Free PE / Size 6587 / 25.73 GiB df outputs: Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/DeathStar--vg-root 957238932 848972636 59634696 94% / none 4 0 4 0% /sys/fs/cgroup udev 1864716 4 1864712 1% /dev tmpfs 374968 1060 373908 1% /run none 5120 4 5116 1% /run/lock none 1874824 148 1874676 1% /run/shm none 102400 24 102376 1% /run/user /dev/sda2 234153 56477 165184 26% /boot And fdisk /dev/sda -l outputs: Disk /dev/sda: 3000.6 GB, 3000592982016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 364801 cylinders, total 5860533168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 4294967295 2147483647+ ee GPT Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary. • Reduce memory usage

    - by Flintoff
I have just installed the standard default desktop configuration of Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal). My PC only has 1GB of RAM and is struggling a little. What steps can I take to reduce the memory overhead of the standard install? If it makes a difference, I use Firefox, and a terminal most of the time. Simply running those two applications I see: free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 938 873 64 0 5 167 -/+ buffers/cache: 701 237 Swap: 959 158 801

  • How can I increase my disk space when Ubuntu is installed alongside with Windows?

    - by Matthew
Some time ago i reinstalled windows, formating and deleting every partition. I then made 3 partitions: One only for Windows OS (about 25GB) One for Ubuntu OS (about 25GB, if i remember corectly 10GB for swap memory and 15GB as an ext4 partition) (not sure if it was that, hope I am not wrong) and like 200GB for all the other stuff. Recently I got a message that i am running out of disk space. My question is: is there a way to resize the 200GB partition and add more space for the Ubuntu partition?

  • I get an "serious errors while checking the disk drives for /boot" error while booting

    - by Vaios Argiropoulos
I have just set up my new system by creating three partitions on a whole hard disk (/boot,/home,swap and /(root)) .I saw this article and now i am getting those errors and the system provide me with some options (I to ignore, S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery). I am forced to choose skip mounting because i don't know what manual recovery is. Despite the error i get i think that the system boots ok because i can use the system but this error is very annoying.

  • Partitioning a 128GB SSD and 500GB HDD

    - by Gladen
So I have a 128GB SSD and 500GB HDD. I want to reïnstall my laptop and put Ubuntu 12.10 on this setup. I already looked around on the internet and came up with this partitioning schema: about 2GB of swap on the SSD (I got 4GB of RAM in my laptop) / using the rest of that space /home on the HDD So I was wondering, are there any better schemes or extra partitions that I should consider putting on a particular drive? Thanks in advance! :)

  • Problem with DualBooting Ubuntu 13.10 and Win7

    - by VinArrow
this is my first post here on AskUbuntu, not first time using it though. I wanted to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my PC to have all my work stuff there and leave Win7 for gaming. So i did my research on how to Dual Boot when you already have Win7 installed, here are the steps i took Used Disk Management on Win7 and shrunk that partition, leaving 80GB free for Ubuntu. Made a Bootable pendrive following the instructions on Ubuntu`s website. During the installation steps there was supposed to be a Install alongside Win7, but there wasnt, so i chose Something else. Everything was fine and i was able to install Ubuntu no problem on my unallocated 80GB partition (76GB Ubuntu + 4GB swap) There was a prompt for me to restart my PC and so I did expecting to see the dual boot screen (grub right?) Now, when i restarted my PC, Grub never showed up and it booted straight to Windows. Then I did some more research and found out that that could happen. Tried three things then Plugging in bootable pendrive again and selected Try Ubuntu without installing. Then i followed some instructions found here (How can I repair grub? (How to get Ubuntu back after installing Windows?)) and i could chroot into my Ubuntu install just fine. Repaired grub as instructed on that link, restarted the PC and booted straight into Win7 again. Again, used the bootable pen drive to Try Ubuntu... and used the Boot-repair tool (recommended repair). Again, booted straight into Win7. Lastly, i installed easyBCD on my Win7 and made a new entry for Ubuntu (Linux/BSD). When i rebooted the PC, there was the option to choose between Win7 and Linux, chose linux and it didnt work, taking me straight to a command line-like enviroment that read Minimum bash like scripting or something, as if I didn`t have a Linux OS installed. So, I thought I`d try and repair my Ubuntu install. And during the Installation method step there was the choice to install alongside Ubuntu 13.10! and that right there drove me crazy. Here is a screenshot of gparted showing how things are set up now http://imageshack.us/f/801/77u3.png/ Notice on the left-hand side how i can access my installation files just fine. sdb1- win7 reserved space, sdb2- win7 OS, sdb3- 76GB ubuntu install, sdb5- 4GB swap area. Does anyone know why my Ubuntu 13.10 is not being recognized? and what should I do to get it working? Thanks and sorry for the long read and bad english! (BIOS = legacy)

  • How to create a custom keyboardlayout that works in all applications

    - by rubo77
I created a custom keyboardlayout Coffee++ for Linux that works fine in most apps: http://coffeeplusplus.z11.de/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13&p=34#p34 I created a debian package, that adds the needed changes to the keyboard configuration and creates a shell script which which you can swap between normal QWERTY and Coffee++ The letters all work fine, only the arrow-combinations, for ex. AltGr+J for "Arrow-left" and so on don't work in all applications. How can I make the Arrow-key-combinations work in all apps?

(I deleted windows 7 to install and use Ubuntu only.)

  • Problem with partitions and 12.04

    - by Wejq
Can I have some help? I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop, that has some partitions: 2 ntfs (one of them is restricted by the system) 2 ext4s 1 Linux swap But when I insert my CD, and run liveCD (as I am now), the installer can't see any of my partitions, it can see only /dev/sda as unallocated place, so does gparted (Fdisk seems ok). On these partitions I have data, that I can use by windows on NTFS's. Here is some of this data:

  • xmodmap reverting periodically

    - by JediBrooker
I'm using xmodmap to swap control and command keys on my macbook pro. However, periodically the key revert back to their original state and this is becoming quite annoying. I'm on Ubuntu 13.10 and I can remember when this situation started occurring was when the system got a keyboard settings (in the system settings) update. Any ideas as to how to either: 1) delete the keyboard settings, or 2) stop the keyboard settings from reverting my keys ??? Cheers!

  • Basic Java drawing program: issue with squares

    - by Caminek
I'm trying to create a simple drawing program that creates a square where the user clicks and drags. The square displays correctly as long as either x or y remain positive with respect to the original click position. If both x and y are negative with respect to the original click position, the square grows/shrinks, but also wanders about the screen. Is there a way to swap the origin point from top-left to bottom-right or to keep the square from wandering?

  • "Could not claim interface on camera: -6" when trying to connect usb camera (Kinect)

    - by rzetterberg
I have installed the freenect library from openkinect.org. With that library there is a demo application which you can run from the terminal to test out the Kinect. However when I run this command I get the following output: richard@behemoth:~$ sudo freenect-glview Kinect camera test Number of devices found: 1 Could not claim interface on camera: -6 Could not open device This particular error is thrown by the library libusb by the function libusb_claim_interface and the error -6 corresponds to the LIBUSB_ERROR_BUSY. So my guess is that it has something to do with mounting the usb, rather than specifically the freenect library or the Kinect itself. So my question is how can I find out what resource is using this interface and how can I free it so that I can access it? Edit: What I have tried so far (just to be sure): Rebooted Plugged-out, plugged-in Tried different usb ports Restarted udev Additional information that might be useful: /etc/fstab: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier # for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name # devices that works even if disks are added and removed. • How to troubleshoot web server lock-up (Debian Squeeze)

    - by Ryan
Every once in a while, my web server slows so significantly, it seems locked up. Can't SSH in, no sites being served. It's a VPS that started out as Debian 5 which I upgraded to testing (squeeze). It's a typical LAMP set-up with the sole purpose of running a couple of wordpress sites. One time when it locked up, I got to one of the sites, but it was wordpress complaining it couldn't establish a database connection. So it seemed as if something was really chewing up the CPU and mysqld either timed out, or possibly failed and couldn't restart. But since I couldn't SSH in I feel more inclined to attribute it to CPU. But the only processes running now, aside from OS and kernel stuff: apache mysqld python (for fail2ban) sshd exim4 It has 512M of RAM and 1.5 GB of swap. Every time I check on it, it has plenty of free memory and is using virtually no swap (usually 2-3M). And since I am running fail2ban I don't think I'm getting ddosed. I did find this in my logwatch email this morning (it locked up late last night, when there would have been very little traffic): 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a0ebc>] ? oom_kill_process+0x7e/0x23d 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1505>] ? __out_of_memory+0x12a/0x141 6 Time(s): [<ffffffff810a1586>] ? out_of_memory+0x6a/0x94 I didn't find anything else suspicious. It can't be my provider's host because I can SSH in and restart the VM, and everything seems fine. Anybody know which logs I should start poring through to find the core of my problem? Thanks guys.

  • How can I fix my corrupted RAID1 ext4 partition on a Synology DS212 NAS?

I have two identical 3 TB disks that were in a RAID1 array, where one disk crashed. I replaced the failed disk, but not after the RAID partitions got messed up. I need to figure out how to restore the RAID array and get at my ext4 partition. Here are the properties of the surviving disk: # fdisk -l /dev/sda fdisk: device has more than 2^32 sectors, can't use all of them Disk /dev/sda: 2199.0 GB, 2199023255040 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 267349 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 267350 2147483647+ ee EFI GPT # parted /dev/sda print Model: ATA ST3000DM001-9YN1 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 3001GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Disk Flags: Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 131kB 2550MB 2550MB ext4 raid 2 2550MB 4698MB 2147MB linux-swap(v1) raid 5 4840MB 3001GB 2996GB raid I replaced the failed drive, and cloned the surviving drive to it so I have something to work with. • High load average, low CPU and IO (Centos 5.7)

    - by Ben
A Drupal 7 site with CiviCRM, after running smoothly for a year on a 1&1 VPS suddenly became unresponsive. Now pages eventually load, but can take more than a minute. Looking at resource use in Virtuozzo, the load average carries a warning, and has remained above 1. While I understand this isn't particularly high, this is a change from when the site was working. Here is a typical snapshot of top: top - 03:10:32 up 3:21, 1 user, load average: 1.16, 1.22, 1.30 Tasks: 43 total, 1 running, 42 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.1%ni, 99.7%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 2097152k total, 1015112k used, 1082040k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached CPU idle level never seems to go much below 70%. wa is virtually always at 0. There appears to be lots of free memory. Instead they suggested an upgrade :) I've looked for processes that might be causing this, examined MySQL showprocesslist, and restarted the container with no result. Does anyone have more troubleshooting suggestions or insights?

  • Installing ubuntu 12.04, installs but does not boot after it asks me to remove the CD

I'm Trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. It had an old copy of Windows 7 on it I tried to reformat the hard drive for a fresh install of Ubuntu but I think I messed up the partitions in some way that prevents it from fully loading. I'm able to complete the install fine and use guided partitioning so it should be happy but when it gets about 90% through at the part that ejects the cd and restarts the system it fails. After ejecting the CD and restarting it just loads up the bios lenovo splash screen then purple then black. I can hear a sound from my speakers like some notification sound but there is no text on my screen. I've since gone back in under Rescue System to try and reconfigure the partitions hoping that it will fix it and i've tried several combinations. Currently it's SCST1 (0,0,0) (sda) - 500.1 GB ATA WDC WD5000AAkKX-0 #1 100.0 MB K biosgrub #2 494.1 GB B K ext4 / #3 5.9 GB F swap swap 8.2 kb FREE SPACE I'm not sure if I need to set the ext4 to contain the boot flag but if I don't include at least one partition with the boot flag enabled it complains saying that "The partition table format in use on your disks normally requires you to create a separate partition for boot loader code. This partitionshould be marked for use as an "EFI boot Partition" and should be at least 35 MB in size. Note that this is not hte same as a partition mounted on /boot" Like I said it seems to have installed all of the actual data from the CD it's just not properly booting for some reason
