• Custom collision

  I was recently assigned to create a siple game using the Corona SDK. The main pillar of the game would be a simple event: the user should put a ball in a basket, and I should be able to handle this event. Here is a picture for better understanding: I successfully managed to create the collision shape for the basket, but i have trouble with the collision of the inside of this basket. My first thought was the following: create a new shape size and position it to fit the "belly" of this basket add it to the physics-world, and listen to the collision. With hybrid drawing it looks like this: But there is a problem: if i add this shape to the physics, it wouldn't let the ball fall into the, basket, it will handle this shape as a solid object as well. So my question is: How could I get this custom object to collide, without blocking the ball to fall through it? I have read a lots of forum post with similar questions but none of them got a proper answer. There must be a way to do this in an elegant way. And one note: Please don't suggest checking the collision manually, with rectangle intersection, because in this simple case it would work, but later I may need to change the shape of the basket, and then it will be useless!

• Fake ISAPI Handler to serve static files with extention that are rewritted by url rewriter

  Introduction I often map html extention to the asp.net dll in order to use url rewritter with .html extentions. Recently, in the new version of www.nouvelair.ca, we renamed all urls to end with .html. This works great, but failed when we used FCK Editor. Static html files would not get serve because we mapped the html extension to the .NET Framework. We can we do to to use .html extension with our rewritter but still want to use IIS behavior with static html files. Analysis I thought that this could be resolve with a simple HTTP handler. We would map urls of static files in our rewriter to this handler that would read the static file and serve it, just as IIS would do. Implementation This is how I coded the class. Note that this may not be bullet proof. I only tested it once and I am sure that the logic behind IIS is more complicated that this. If you find errors or think of possible improvements, let me know. • What presentation software suits my needs?

  Background: I'm teaching biology to 12th grade students. The syllabus I'm teaching is huge. I mean literally, very huge. There is a lot for students to remember. There are no less than 1000 facts (weird names, dates etc) for students to remember. They'll have to remember all of them, they don't have a choice. The notes I compiled for their learning itself is upto 80 printed pages(Just the bullet outline & facts). That's just one chapter. We have 34 chapters. Also my students are very hardworking, they study upto 8-10hrs per day (Yeah! we are from India :). So, I want to ensure maximum retaining by the students at each and every stage (Teaching & Learning). I'm trying to as many memory training techniques as possible. I'm trying to incorporate, mnemonics, strong visual aids (pictures, 3D-animations, real videos etc.), spaced repetition etc. I think MS powerpoint is not suitable for my needs: There are about 200 slides per chapter. Its very easy for students to get lost while teaching. Because the problem with powerpoint is that it gives facts (as bullets) but it doesn't exploit the association & organization (Concept Map) of the content, which helps students learn quickly. I found an amazing software called XMind. You can see the screenshot here. Problem is that it is not as powerpoint in terms of powerpoint. This software can be used for just for concept maps. In the above screenshot, each topic occupies a single slide. I have an Image/picture(Detailed huge picture) and about 5-10 bullet points and probably a video or an animation of somethings. And this XMind is not good at presenting, in terms that it doesn't allow me to set what to present after what. I want to present a top down view, with a slide for each topic. PS: I Don't like prezi.com. I tried but it simply is too confusing for my students. It zooms here and there. I didn't tried it but I've seen few presentations.

• Pressing tab to indent a list moves to the next table cell

  I have a list (e.g., a bulleted list) in Microsoft Word. This list is inside a table cell. When I press Tab to increase the indent, rather than increasing the indent, it moves the cursor to the next cell. When I try Ctrl+Tab, it just inserts a tab character without changing the indentation of the bullet (paragraph). How can I turn this off, so it does not go to the next cell but rather just indents the list?

• question about a sata read/write speed

  I'm contemplating biting the bullet for an ssd drive in a server, obviously I know it will be MUCH faster than a regular 7200rpm sata2 3gbps drive. The nice thing about ssd's is often they post the read/write speed but that info isn't available for sata's so I'm just curious to know what a typical read/write speed would be for a seagate 120gb 7200rpm drive. I know it fluctuates from manufacturer and model series but I'm just looking for a guestimate.

  Building a multi player asteroids game where ships compete with each other. Using UDP. Wanted to minimize traffic sent to server. Which would you do: Send periodic keyboard state samples every from client every to match server physics update rate e.g. 50 times per second. Highly resilient to packet loss and other reliabilty problems. Out of date packets disacarded by server. Generates a lot of unnuecessary traffic. Only send keyboard state when it changes (key up, key down). Radically less traffic sent from client to server. However, UDP can lose packets without you being informed. So the latter method could result in the vital packet never being resent unless I detect and resend this in a timely manner.

  Recently I've started learning Unity3D. I'm working on a game as an exercise in which you control a space ship and have to dodge asteroids. If you feel like it's getting a bit too much you can hit the space bar, emitting a blast in all directions that repulses nearby asteroids. • Error in destroying object in Box2D/LibGDX

  I'm trying to delete an object when a collision happens. I have put the following code in the render method of the object so it would be outside of the physics calculations. public void render(SpriteBatch spriteBatch) { // some other code... body.setActive(false); body.getWorld().destroyBody(body); But I'm getting an run-time error which crashes the JVM and shows, AL lib: alc_cleanup: 1 device not closed Assertion failed! Program: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe File: /var/lib/hudson/jobs/libgdx-git/workspace/gdx/jni/Box2D/Dynamics/b2World.cpp, Line 133 Expression: m_bodyCount 0 Can anyone help me here?

  I'm a flash actionscript game developer who is a bit backward with mathematics, though I find physics both interesting and cool. For reference this is a similar game to the one I'm making: Untangled flash game I have made an untangled game almost to full completion of logic. But, when two lines intersect, I need those intersected or 'tangled' lines to show a different color; red. It would be really kind of you people if you could suggest an algorithm with/without math for detecting line segment collisions. I'm basically a person who likes to think 'visually' than 'arithmetically' :) P.S I'm trying to make a function as private function isIntersecting(A:Point, B:Point, C:Point, D:Point):Boolean Thanks in advance.

• Shader effect similar to Metro 2033 gasmask

  I was thinking about effects in games the other day and I was reminded of the Gasmask effect from Metro 2033. Once you put the gasmask on it blurred a bit in the corners and could ice up and even get cracked. I assume that something like that is done using a shader. I have been experimenting a bit with game development, so far mostly playing with existing rendering engines and adding physics support etc. I would like to learn more about this sort of effect. Can someone give me a simple example of a shader that would alter the entire scene like this. Or if not a shader then an idea on how it would be done. Thanks. • libgdx spite position relative to body

  Apologies if this is a reiteration, as I couldn't find another discussion of this over the past couple days. Issue: I'm using libgdx and box2d, and I'm currently updating the sprite's position to the body's current position every render call. Using a debugRenderer to see the bodies, I see that there is fairly noticeable lag between the movement/position of the body and the sprite that is being moved relative to it. Question: Is this lag normal, possibly to perform collisions ahead of time? If not, should I be manipulating/relating the positions differently? Thanks in advance! [Solution] This was a coding error on my part. Pointed out by a good reply below, I was updating the position of the sprite relative to the body and then stepping the physics. Thus never actually setting the sprite to the body's CURRENT position. Thanks!

  NoSQL as a movement is an interesting beast. I kinda like that its negatively defined (I happen to belong myself to at least one other such a-community). Its not in its roots about proposing one specific new silver bullet to kill an old problem. its about challenging the consensus. • Wubi without downloading ubuntu-12.04.1-wubi-i386.tar.xz

  I have a class of computational physics. I want to install Ubuntu on 24 systems. unfortunately our access to Internet is limited. On the other hand I do not like to make new partitions for Linux. So I have to use Wubi but Wubi needs a large file .i.e. "ubuntu-12.04.1-wubi-i386.tar.xz". Unfortunately I could not make a trick to Wubi because when I put "ubuntu-12.04.1-wubi-i386.tar.xz" manually in the ubuntu/disks directory, wubi starts to complain about the existence of already installed ubuntu and all thing should be done from scratch. Does anybody know a solution for this problem? Thanks

• Does programming knowledge have a half-life?

  In answering this question, I asserted that programming knowledge has a half-life of about 18 months. In physics, we have radioactive decay which is the process by which a radioactive element transforms into something less energetic. The half-life is the measure of how long it takes for this process to result in only half of the material to remain. A parallel concept might be that over time our programming knowledge ceases to be the current idiom and eventually becomes irrelevant. Noting that a half-life is asymptotic (so some knowledge will always be relevant), what are your thoughts on this? Is 18 months a good estimate? Is it even the case? Does it apply to design patterns, but over a longer period? What are the inherent advantages/disadvantages of this half-life? Update Just found this question which covers the material fairly well: "Half of everything you know will be obsolete in 18-24 months" = ( True, or False? )
