  i will be analysing vast amount of network traffic related data shortly. i will pre-process the data in order to analyse it. i have found that R and SPSS are among the most popular tools for statistical analysis. i will also be generating quite a lot of graphs and charts. so i was wondering what is the basic difference between these two softwares. i am not asking which one is better. i just wanted to know what are the difference in terms of workflow between the two besides the fact that SPSS has a GUI. I will be mostly working with scripts in either case anyway so i wanted to know about the other differences.

• Convert doc/docx to semantic HTML

  I would like to convert doc/docx documents to semantic HTML. Some wishes/requirements: Semantic HTML such that headers in the document are <h1>, <h2> etc., tables are <table> and so forth. Should preferably be possible to handle headings, lists, tables and images. Graphs and math formulas is a nice extra. • Doesn't have to be converted straight from doc/docx to html, could use an intermediary format, such as xml or docbook. • Should work programatically, and with large number of documents. The closest thing to a solution I've found so far is http://holloway.co.nz/docvert/index.html, but unfortunately there are many a few bugs, small user base and it can't handle a lot of documents. More of a proof of concept.

• Timeline graph - how to handle "time gaps"?

  I've been working with Google chart API and annotated timeline. Drawing graphs is fine. I have no problem. However, I need to draw a timeline graph for share prices. And as you may know, share prices are meaningful only between certain times (e.g. from 10AM to 4PM, when the market opens and closes). How do I change the Google timeline graph so that on X-Axis, the range is from 10AM-4PM? Right now, it just draws a long constant line between 4PM till 10AM next day before prices start to move again. Man, I hope that makes sens. (Google finance chart seems to do it). • Plotting 3-tuple data points in a surface / contour plot using matplotlib

  I have some surface data that is generated by an external program as XYZ values. I want to create the following graphs, using matplotlib: Surface plot Contour plot Contour plot overlayed with a surface plot I have looked at several examples for plotting surfaces and contours in matplotlib - however, the Z values seems to be a function of X and Y i.e. Y ~ f(X,Y). I assume that I will somehow need to transform my Y variables, but I have not seen any example yet, that shows how to do this. So, my question is this: given a set of (X,Y,Z) points, how may I generate Surface and contour plots from that data? BTW, just to clarify, I do NOT want to create scatter plots. Also although I mentioned matplotlib in the title, I am not averse to using rpy(2), if that will allow me to create these charts.

• How to sound audible bell from crontab

  The command line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in bash will ring the bell. With the line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in my crontab I expected the bell to ring every minute, but it's silent. I know crontab is working because the line: /bin/touch $HOME/jkjkjk updates the file jkjkjk every minute as it should. I found a posting some years ago suggesting that standard output should be directed to /dev/tty1 in crontab. But the line: /bin/echo "\007" /dev/tty1 Still fails. What to try next?

• Cant access log files in production.

  I was trying to run my application and check for some output on the production.log. However Rails throws this error. Apache log Rails Error: Unable to access log file. Please ensure that /var/www/somefolder/someapp/log/production.log exists and is chmod 0666. The log level has been raised to WARN and the output directed to STDERR until the problem is fixed. I have performed the necessary chmod 666 production.log to make it work but I realized that the file is under root access. So my file permissions are -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 20845 2010-03-18 01:18 production.log Im not sure how to allow Rails to access this file. Im fairly new to managing linux production env so I request you to excuse my ignorance.

• Why does the ASP.Net Web Forms model "suck"?

  I've heard Jeff Atwood, Joel Spolsky, and many other legendary people talk about how the ASP.Net Web Forms model sucks. (So this question is kind of directed to them, hopefully Jeff is reading) Now, I highly respect their opinion, given their background and expertise, but truth be told, I absolutely LOVE ASP.Net. I think the model is brilliant, and it sucks if you have no idea what you're doing, but once you understand how to control ViewState, when to use handlers instead of pages, etc, it is generations ahead of all the other models. So every time I hear someone complain about how it sucks, I can't help ask the same question... Why? What is it that's so bad about it? I appreciate all opinions. I'm assuming there's probably a post at Jeff's blog talking about this too...

• Getting consecutive version numbers from Hibernate's @Version usage once per transaction

  We use Hibernate with the following version definition for optimistic locking et. al: <version name="version" access="field" column="VERSION" type="long" unsaved-value="negative"/> This is fine and dandy; however, there is one small problem, which is that the first version for some entities is '0', and for others, it is '1'. Why this is happening, is that for some object graphs, an entity will be subject to both onSave and flushDirty - this is reasonable, such as if two object are circular dependencies. However, the version number gets incremented on both occasions, leading to the above '0' / '1' discrepancy. I'd really like the version number only to ever increment once per transaction. However, I can't see a simple way to do this in the hibernate versioning implementation, without hacking about with an Interceptor (which was how I generated a column value for version before, but I wanted hibernate to do it itself)..

  Hello, In my django project in the view I call the last 6 values in the column and send them to the template. I then would like to pass into google charts api those 6 values and have a graph. • Java code to convert a list of dependencies into a build order?

  Given I have a list of dependencies, like: module1 module2 dependsOn module1 module3 dependsOn module1 module4 dependsOn module3 I would like to create a build order where each build step is found on one line, and each line contains a list of one or more modules which can be compiled at the same time, and which only depend on modules compiled earlier. So, for the above data set, create a list like: module1 module2,module3 module4 Now, this is basically just a problem of creating a directed graph, and analyzing it. Now, I am using Ant, and would very much like to use something off-the-shelf... what is the minimum of custom code I need to have it create such a dependency-aware build list starting from the given input? BTW, these modules are actually custom modules, so maven will not work.

• JQuery Ajax returns status 0 in Google Chrome, works fine with other browsers.

  Hello, I am using jQuery ajax, and it worked very well until I tried the site in Google Chrome. I am directed to the success handler. However, when I printed the status of the XMLHttpRequest, I got a 0. The responseText is empty as well. This only happens in Google Chrome. I tried the same code on Safari, Firefox, and Opera, they are worked correctly. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  I was trying to understand why Python is said to be a beautiful language. I was directed to the beauty of PEP 8... and it was strange. In fact it says that you can use any convention you want, just be consistent... and suddenly I found some strange things in the core library: request() getresponse() set_debuglevel() endheaders() http://docs.python.org/py3k/library/http.client.html The below functions are new in the Python 3.1. What part of PEP 8 convention is used here? popitem() move_to_end() http://docs.python.org/py3k/library/collections.html So my question is: is PEP 8 used in the core library, or not? Why is it like that? Is there the same situation as in PHP where I cannot just remember the name of the function because there are possible all ways of writing the name? Why PEP 8 is not used in the core library even for the new functions?

  Hey all, I'm looking for some ANTLR examples, I tried googling a bit but I found certain things which didn't fit my requirments. I found the Mantra project, but it's statically typed and is 'too' big for me at this moment, then I found 'pie' as interpreter, which is dynamically typed, which what I want, but it uses a syntax-directed interpreter. I'm looking for a pretty small language which is dynamically typed and uses AST's if possible. It doesn't need to be advanced, if it would have classes I would already be very happy. • Utilise Surv object in ggplot or lattice

  Anyone know how to take advantage of ggplot or lattice in doing survival analysis? It would be nice to do trellis/facet like survival graphs. So in the end I played around and sort of found a solution for a kaplan meier plot. Apologize for the messy code in taking the list elements into a dataframe, but I couldnt figure out another way. Note: It only works with two levels of stratum.   Apart from graphical estimation of linearity (gaze-at-scatterplot method), which is utilized before applying some technique from GLM family, there are several ways to do this estimation arithmetically (i.e. without graphs). Right now, I'll focus on Fisher's eta-squared - correlation ratio: arithmetically, it's equal to squared Pearson's r (coef. of determination: R2) if relationship between two variables is linear. Hence, you can compare values of eta and r and make an assessment about type of relation (linear or not). It provides an information about percent of variance in the dependent variable explained (linearly or not) by the independent variable. Therefore, you can apply it when linearity assumptions are not met. Simply stated: is there a routine for eta/eta-squared in R?

• Image rendering on browser or temporary images?

  I'm trying to make a statistics page where it will show several data and charts. The charts need to be pictures so that the user can save it/drag-and-drop to his/her personal reports. I'm using Gruff Graphs for Ruby to produce the charts but I don't know the best way to display the results safe and protected. Some of my ideas/tries are: save the chart to a file (jpg, png)? problem: data is available to anyone (don't have access to cron, to delete data from time to time) render in the browser (has to work on IE)? Use javascript (Raphaël—JavaScript Library) or Google API and output a PDF report (need plugin or gem, right)? use send_data? i've tried to output other way than inline, because I needs to show other data, is it possible? • shortest path search in a map represented as 2d shapes

  Hi, I have a small library of a few shortest path search algorithms. They were developed for simple undirected graphs (the normal representation - vertices and edges). Now I'd like to somehow apply them on a bit different scenario - where the maps are represented as 2-dimensional shapes, connected by shared edges (edges of the polygons, that is). In this scenario, the search can start/end either at a map object or some point (x,y). What would be the best approach? Try to apply the algorithms onto shapes? or try to extract a 'normal' graph out of the shapes (I have preprocessing time available)? Any advice would be much appreciated, as I'm really not sure which way to go, and I don't have enough time (and skill) to explore many options... Thanks a lot

• jquery - loose click() event after ajax call ???

  At the following webpage liamharding.com/pgi.php I have an option panel on the left side of the page which opens and close's upon clicking the panels 'arrow', this works fine until you select a market (for testing use one of the 'Random Walk' markets and click 'Show/Refesh Graphs'), this then makes an ajax call using get_graph(forexName, myCount, divIsNew) function. Once this call is completed a graph(s) is displayed and then my options panels click() event does not work? The ajax call returns the data in a variable ajax_data, the problem happens when I perform the following code var jq_ajax_data = $("<div/>").html(ajax_data); . I need to wrap it in a so I can extract data from it using jQuery. If this line of code is commented out the click() event works fine ?? Hope somebody can help, I have spent a lot of time but cant find what the problem is.

  I'm trying to comprehend the Unix file system on my OSX. I'm following wikipedia Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. I understand when I install ruby gems I must use the command sudo gem install but if I omit sudo, problems may occur. Where are gems installed within the file system when I omit sudo? How can I delete these gems? A Fun side question: When I enter cd ~/.gem my terminal is directed to .gem user$, When I enter cd ~/ and list folders using the ls command I can't find a .gem folder. Where is the .gem folder? How does this fit into the Filesystem?

• Facebook Connect via Javascript doesn't close and doesn't pass session id

However after authentication, the popup window just stays open and the main window is not directed anywhere. In fact, it is the popup window that goes to "/register/step2" How can I get the login window to close as expected, and to pass the facebook session id to /register/step2? Thanks!

  Hi, I have built an information portal in PHP [Something like a recipe book], where the first few recipes are free to access. The advanced recipes are available only to paid members. I intend to use a simple subscribe now paypal button. When the user clicks on this button, he is directed to paypal website and upon payment redirected to my site. How do I collect the payment information from paypal? I do not want to use a wsdl. I need the information to update my user level field [0 for registered users, 1 for paid users] in the users table.   Hello, everyone! I have a project (related to graph algorithms). It is written by someone else. The code is horrible: public fields, no getters/setters huge methods, all public some classes have over 20 fields some classes have over 5 constructors (which are also huge) some of those constructors just left many fields null (so I can't make some fields final, because then every second constructor signals errors) methods and classes rely on each other in both directions I have to rewrite this into a clean and understandable API. Problem is: I myself don't understand anything in this code. Please give me hints on analyzing and understanding such code. I was thinking, perhaps, there are tools which perform static code analysis and give me call graphs and things like this.

• Delphi component or library to display mathematical expressions

  I'm looking for a simple component that displays mathematical expressions in Delphi. When I started out I thought it would be easy to find something on the net, but it turns out it was harder than anticipated. There are lots and lots of components that will parse mathematical expressions, but few (none?) that will display them. Ideally I would like a component as simple as a TLabel, where I could set the caption to some expression and it would be displayed correctly, but some sort of library that let's me draw expressions to a canvas would also be sufficient for my needs. Update: I'm not talking about plotting graphs of functions or something like that. I want to display (for instance) (X^2+3)/X like this:
