  • Help translating Reflector deconstruction into compilable code

    So I am Reflector-ing some framework 2.0 code and end up with the following deconstruction fixed (void* voidRef3 = ((void*) &_someMember)) { ... } This won't compile due to 'The right hand side of a fixed statement assignment may not be a cast expression' I understand that Reflector can only approximate and generally I can see a clear path but this is a bit outside my experience. Question: what is Reflector trying to describe to me? Update: Am also seeing the following fixed (IntPtr* ptrRef3 = ((IntPtr*) &this._someMember)) Update: So, as Mitch says, it is not a bitwise operator, but an addressOf operator. Question is now: fixed (IntPtr* ptrRef3 = &_someMember) fails with an 'Cannot implicitly convert type 'xxx*' to 'System.IntPtr*'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?)' compilation error. So I seemed to be damned if I do and damned if I dont. Any ideas?

    In my class, I want to use a dictionary with the following declaration: Dictionary<string, T[]> Since the operations of my class are exactly the same for all generic types, I do not wish to define my class as generic (which means I would have to create a separate instance of my class for each generic type I insert into the dictionary ?).     I am adding new operator overloads to take advantage of c++0x rvalue references, and I feel like I'm producing a lot of redundant code. I have a class, tree, that holds a tree of algebraic operations on double values. Here is an example use case: tree x = 1.23; tree y = 8.19; tree z = (x + y)/67.31 - 3.15*y; ... std::cout << z; // prints "(1.23 + 8.19)/67.31 - 3.15*8.19" For each binary operation (like plus), each side can be either an lvalue tree, rvalue tree, or double. This results in 8 overloads for each binary operation: // core rvalue overloads for plus: tree operator +(const tree& a, const tree& b); tree operator +(const tree& a, tree&& b); tree operator +(tree&& a, const tree& b); tree operator +(tree&& a, tree&& b); // cast and forward cases: tree operator +(const tree& a, double b) { return a + tree(b); } tree operator +(double a, const tree& b) { return tree(a) + b; } tree operator +(tree&& a, double b) { return std::move(a) + tree(b); } tree operator +(double a, tree&& b) { return tree(a) + std::move(b); } // 8 more overloads for minus // 8 more overloads for multiply // 8 more overloads for divide // etc which also has to be repeated in a way for each binary operation (minus, multiply, divide, etc). PS: The class is actually more complex than just a tree of doubles. Reducing copies does dramatically improve performance of my project. So, the rvalue overloads are worthwhile for me, even with the extra code. I have a suspicion that there might be a way to template away the "cast and forward" cases above, but I can't seem to think of anything.

    I've written a (array) container class template (lets call it smart array) for using it in the BREW platform (which doesn't allow many C++ constructs like STD library, exceptions, etc. It has a very minimal C++ runtime support); while writing this my friend said that something like this already exists in Boost called MultiArray, I tried it but the ARM compiler (RVCT) cries with 100s of errors. I've not seen Boost.MultiArray's source, I've just started learning template only lately; template meta programming interests me a lot, although am not sure if this is strictly one, which can be categorised thus. So I want all my fellow C++ aficionados to review it ~ point out flaws, potential bugs, suggestions, optimisations, etc.; somthing like "you've not written your own Big Three which might lead to...".     Hi, I'd like to write a method that can accept a type param (or whatever the method can figure out the type from) and return a value of this type so I don't have to cast the return type. Here is a method: public Object doIt(Object param){ if(param instanceof String){ return "string"; }else if(param instanceof Integer){ return 1; }else{ return null; } } When I call this method, and pass in it a String, even if I know the return type will be a String I have to cast the return Object. This is similar to the int param. How shall I write this method to accept a type param, and return this type?

In Java, the default type of floating point constants in double, so the following will causes a compilation error in java: float f = 100.0; // we either need to uses type case operator or put f at the end of the number constant. This is because the default floating-point constants are of type double and casting from double to float without type cast operator is an error, so we need either add a type case operator or put f at the end of the number. So, Why in C this doesn't produce an error, Is it because the default floating-point constants are of type float, or because the compiler do an implicit down-cast conversion (that doesn't requires type case operator in C)????

    SQL Server 2008 I almost have, I think, what I'm looking to do. I'm just trying to fine tune the result. I have a table that stores timestamps of all transactions that occur on the system. I'm writing a query to give an average transaction time. This is what I have so far: With TransTime AS ( select endtime-starttime AS Totaltime from transactiontime where starttime > '2010-05-12' and endtime < '2010-05-13') Select CAST(AVG(CAST(TotalTime As Float))As Datetime) from TransTime I'm getting the following result: 1900-01-01 00:00:00.007 I can't figure out how to strip the date off and just display the time, 00:00:00:007.     In the sample code below I am dividing by zero which when I step through it with the debugger the (dividend / divisor) yeilds an Infinity or NaN (if the divisor is zero). When I cast this result to a long I get a valid result, usually something like -9223372036854775808. Why is this cast valid? Why doesn't it stop executing (throw an exception for example) rather than assign an arbitrary value? double divisor = 0; double dividend = 7; long result = (long)(dividend / divisor);

    It is quite puzzling to find out that Generics Constraint Can't Be Casted to Its Derived Type. Let's say I have the following code: public abstract class BaseClass { public int Version { get { return 1; } } public string FixString { get; set; } public BaseClass() { FixString = "hello"; } public virtual int GetBaseVersion() { return Version; } } public class DeriveClass: BaseClass { public new int Version { get { return 2; } } } And guess what, this method will return a compilation error: public void FreeConversion<T>(T baseClass) { var derivedMe = (DeriveClass)baseClass; } I would have to cast the baseClass to object first before I can cast it to DerivedClass. Seems to me pretty ugly. Why this is so?

    For convenience, I'd like to be able to cast between two types defined in other libraries. (Specifically, QString from the Qt library and UnicodeString from the ICU library.) Right now, I have created utility functions in a project namespace: namespace MyProject { const icu_44::UnicodeString ToUnicodeString(const QString& value); const QString ToQString(const icu_44::UnicodeString& value); } That's all well and good, but I'm wondering if there's a more elegant way. Ideally, I'd like to be able to convert between them using a cast operator. I do, however, want to retain the explicit nature of the conversion. An implicit conversion should not be possible. Is there a more elegant way to achieve this without modifying the source code of the libraries? Some operator overload syntax, perhaps?

    I have a view that contains a calculated column. Is there are a way to cast it as a CHAR or VARCHAR rather than a VARBINARY ? Obviously, I have tried using CAST(... as CHAR) but it gives an error. Here is a simple replicable example.     So I am trying to port 32 bit to 64 bit. I have turned on the VS2008 flag for detecting problems with 64 bit. I am trying following: char * pList = (char *)uiTmp); warning C4312: 'type cast' : conversion from 'unsigned int' to 'char *' of greater size Disregard the code itself. This is also true for any pointer, because 64 bit pointer is greater than 32 bit unsigned int or int for that purpose. Given that you have to cast smaller type to greater how would you go about doing it so it correctly on both 32/64 bit systems

I was looking for a method to display hierarchical comments to articles like it happens in blogs.
