• Windows XP Home Edition SP3 cant recognise PCMIA SD Card

  System Specifications: Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6000 OS: Windows Home Edition SP3 SD Adapter: Hagiwara Smart Media Adapter I inserted the card into the slot, windows xp recognises the device, lists the pcmia controller on the device manager list, an entry appears under the IDE ATA/ATAPI category on the device manager as well. However, the device does not show under my computer and the driver does not get assigned a letter number. I checked the system logs from the device manager and there were no logged errors. Checking the Hagiwara support website, the manufacturer indicates that the adapter driver is the same as the windows xp pcmia controller. Checking Dell's website, no specific drivers were listed for that either. General Search on the web indicates that multiple people face similar problems with their SD cards, yet none actually spell out the route issue that causes this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further debugging. Thanks in advance

  In order for magit to read my git settings on Emacs 24.3.1 for Windows, I added the following configuration from a stack overflow post: (when (string-equal system-type "windows-nt") (setenv "HOME" (concat (getenv "HOMEDRIVE") (getenv "HOMEPATH"))) Interestingly, after this is added to my .emacs, Emacs thinks .emacs doesn't exist anymore. If I do M-x cd to ~ and then do M-x pwd it says ~ is located at C:\Users\Me\AppData\Roaming. It appears that emacs is reading the .emacs settings file because it loads my custom theme. However, if I try to find ~/.emacs Emacs doesn't see it. The file has all permissions on the file system for any user.

  Hi, Is it possible to run an email server on my home box using dynamic dns? The scenario is, I want to auto cc all incoming and outgoing emails from my one account to another, from some server side config instead of configuring email clients for rules. I have tried Google Apps Mail but it doesn't allow auto cc of outgoing emails. After having read tons of blogs, forum messages etc (hope I have been reading the correct info :) ) the only option to achieve what I am needing is to setup my own mail server, but the cost of getting a static IP doesn't fit my budget. Please can someone point me in the correct direction. Platform doesn't matter, I can setup a Windows or Linux server. Many Thanks

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

  I'm trying to connect to my home server from my mac, but struggle with typing the password, which contains a plus sign. I have a norwegian keyboard layout, and when I log in from windows (via wmware), I get a norwegian keyboard at the logon screen, but when I connect directly from the mac, I get a english keyboard layout, which makes it impossible to type my password... Why does it give me a different layout for the mac? How can I type a plus sign? The key that should give me a plus sign if the keyboard was english, is the key that contains the ´ and `, and using this button doesn't give me anything in the login prompt... regards, -Vegar

• Cannot ssh anymore into FreeBSD 7.2 home server

  Somehow sshd stopped running and no amount of start, restart or onestart will make it go again. I normally ssh into it from a dual-boot laptop computer that shows up on the network as gabi-buntu when running Ubuntu Karmic, and as gabi-pc when running Windows XP Pro. Neither my Putty connection nor the Linux terminal can establish a ssh link anymore. Upon rebooting the server, I am greeted with "/etc/rc: WARNING: run_rc_command: cannot run /usr/sbin/sshd". In addition, a message will appear saying things like rpc.statd: failed to contact host gabi-buntu RPC: port mapper failure RPC: timed out Everything else works fine. The FreeBSD 7.2 box runs a print server, a Samba server, and an Apache server for the home wiki, via https. It also serves up NFS shares for Linux clients. Any suggestions? Thank you, Gabi Huiber

  i accidentally deleted the recovery folder on the recovery partition (win vista home) i think it was some sort of scheduled maintenance of some program that i did not configure properly? oops... lol i called toshiba and they said i needed to buy a recovery program, which i didnt bother doing.   my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.)   I have a bunch of home movies that don't have useful filenames because they came straight off the camera. (I'm using Vista 64, by the way.) Picasa is pretty good for browsing through them and watching them, but it doesn't use my video card for rendering the videos. My CPU gets pegged at max usage, and full screen barely works. Windows Media Player or Quicktime works fine. Is there another application (like Picasa) that can be used for browsing through movies that both uses my video card and shows thumbnails of all the movies in my collection? I'd rather have something nicer than Windows Explorer. (The movies are h.264 AAC 1280x720.)

• How can I set up an FTP user with a home directory inside another user's home folder?

  Hi I have an Ubuntu (Hardy) server which I am using to host multiple websites. All of the sites are stored in subfolders of a public_html folder for my main login to the server and accessed via a single SSH account. I now have a website user who wants FTP (or similar) access to enable them to upload various files etc to the directory where their website is situated, however I still need the SSH account to have access to this directory as I may need to make changes using my master account. Basically I want to create an FTP account (I have VSFTPD installed) for a user with the home directory inside my own user account but they should only be able to read/write to this folder or its subfolders but not go further up the directory tree. • Setting up Multiple Routers (as Hardware Firewalls) behind a Home Router

  I’ve currently got one computer behind a router with built-in firewall functionality, connected to a home cable-modem that has a single Ethernet port and one IP. I’m going to have to set up another computer for the rest of the family to use which of course will need to be connected to the Internet, probably wirelessly since the modem is in my room and the new system would not be. What I would like to do is to get two more small routers with firewall capability and connect each computer to a router, which would in turn connect to the main router which connects to the cable-modem. That way, both systems have a hardware firewall protecting them (particularly the wireless system) and the burden of blocking would be reduced on both the computer CPUs and the main router because the secondary routers would handle some of the workload. I’m trying to find out about the complexities inherent in this design and how I could set it up to work, specifically the IP handling and NAT aspect. Thanks a lot.

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.
