  The last few months I have been spending a lot of time designing (and help design) the developer experience for the areas I contribute to (in future versions of Visual Studio). As a technical person who defines feature sets, it is easy to get engulfed in the pure technical side of things and ignore the details that ultimately make users "love" using the product to achieve their goal, instead of just "having to use" it. • I have a large number of links on every page, for design reasons I want to keep it but is it hurting my SEO

  The site is http://www.centralsaddlery.co.uk We have other issues which we are tackling in terms of content etc but the question I have is: "Is my main navigation hurting us in SEO?" Its a lot of links and it's on a lot of pages. If so - what is a way to get google to ignore links below the top level. I had thought google would see that the links are hidden by default and only shown on hover but I can't verify this at all. We absolutely want to keep the menu, our customers like it and so do we - we think it is pretty usable as we have a lot of products to look at. Any advice is appreciated (and any tips for any part of the SEO are welcome too)

• More confusion over SEO Cname and 301 redirect

  Previous answers on this topic don't really help me with my query, so any help appreciated for a bit of a newbie. I have a new domain "domain#1.mobi" Its hosted with godaddy and has a cname and forwarding, pointing it to "domain#1.elsewhere.us" It has no content. The content is all hosted on "domain#1.elsewhere.us" which is what Google is now listing in its results. I want Google to ignore that and only list "domain#1.mobi" in its listings. How do I achieve this?

• Scrum Board for a distributed team

  I am looking for recommendations on a digital Scrum Board which can be shared over the internet. I imagine something like a big tablet on which you can draw and which remote users can access, too. I dislike Scrum software because I think one major benefit of a Scrum Board is its physical presence. It should be hard to ignore. The best solution would be two big tablets on which you can draw and which can be synchronized. Has anyone got product recommendations for something like this? Or would you rather use a software? • Why Google Analytics is displaying wrong landing pages?

  I see all of my pages as Landing Pages in Google Analytics which cannot be true as I did not post those pages anywhere and I don't see any traffic hitting directly to that page. Also, I am using virtual page views on few buttons and I see those virtual pages as Landing pages too. For example, /click/request-a-quote 35000 views 35000 is too big a number to be ignored. Even if I ignore Virtual Pages Views, I see a lot of pages as Landing Pages that I am 100% sure that visitors ( atleast not so many users) are NOT hitting directly. Any advice, how to debug it?   I've always have my doubts about navigation menus effect on SEO. You know, the vertical menus on the top that show in every page in the site linking to main sections and subsections. My issue is that if not done dynamically (i.e. after page is loaded or something), from a search engine's point of view it probably looks like a whole bunch of links in the beginning of the page, and links that probably have nothing to do with the page being analyzed, so it's probably not only confusing it, but also giving link 'juice' to the wrong pages or reducing its value. When I've asked SEO people about this, I usually get a "Google is smart, they'll recognize it as a menu and ignore it" response, but I'm not convinced (and the 'Google is smart' argument sounds almost like religion discussion to me). So does it affect SEO negatively or not? Are there any official posts on this topic?

• Offline apt-get update to age of cache

  I have a script to quickly upgrade a Live or fresh system from cached files on a flash drive. In essence, it looks like this: # *Code to remove and symlink /var/cache/apt/ if currently empty of packages.* sudo apt-get dist-upgrade # Quick offline cached upgrade; not limited by slow WANs. echo $'\nMake sure Internet is reachable and press enter for complete online upgrade.'; read sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade # Complete online upgrade. The problem is that the ‘cached upgrade’ seems to ignore the cached pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin which is where I assume apt-get update stores its changes, so the upgrade completes as if the system is up-to-date. Useless. So in that case, I need some code to apt-get update to the age of the package cache on my flash drive. This code would be placed between the 1st and 2nd lines of the code above.

  I know that the mobile bookmark bubble might sort of work for iOS, but it isn't going in the same section. And for Android, bookmarking is really not going to cut it for a mobile HTML5 application install since users just don't think to go to their bookmarks and that bookmark process takes two or three steps. To me this issue of getting the application (bookmark) installed pretty much makes the rest of the HTML 5 features aimed at mobile HTML much less useful. I can't realistically expect users to prefer the bookmark install and launch process over regular apps, so I can realistically expect them to ignore my mobile HTML5 application and use a native app. The groups behind mobile HTML 5 features do seem to be pushing for HTML 5 apps adoption with things like Application Cache etc. To me it seems obvious that the bookmark bubble is not going to cut it. Someone please tell me they have addressed this or at least are working on it?

• Closing lid freezes laptop

  Closing the lid on my dell studio 15 which is running ubuntu 10.04 freezes the screen. This is a new problem in ubuntu 10.04 which did not exist in 9.10 I have tried playing with all the settings in System-Preferences-Screensaver but nothing seems to make any difference. (please note the Power Management settings are accessible from here so I have tried those too.) I don't need hibernate or suspend. I just want to be able to close the lid, and then open it and still have a working laptop. Is their a settings somewhere that will make Ubuntu ignore the lid closing?

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site?   I know the discussion here where they are not getting the same error as I. I use Lenovo Thinkpad X60. The default partition table: sd1 ext4 53.91GB, sd2 extended 1.99GB and sd5 swap 1.99GB. I get Input/output error during read on /dev/sda when trying to install from LiveCD -mode and when trying to install directly. I get the error normally at the stage of choosing time zone or very last at choosing the keyboard layout. Then there is the box with buttons: back, ignore and continue. Neither of them put the process forward so I need to cancel it. How can you install Ubuntu to SDD disk?

  I'm in Bing Webmaster Tools, under Index URL Normalization. Many parameters are listed in the table with 3 other columns: Status, Source, Date. The "Source" column says "Webmaster" where I have added parameters, and "Bing" where I assume the parameter has been auto-detected. "Date" is probably the last date it detected the parameter. I've tried searching the help files but I can't find what the Status column means. The top of the page says: This feature allows you to specify query parameters for Bing’s crawler to ignore. But it's not clear whether "Enable" or "Disable" is related to this, and if so what happens in each case. Does anyone know?

Cairo Dock is GREAT, but I'm left with one little problem that I'd like to fix: after installing Cairo Dock, LightDM includes two extraneous entries to non-working desktops. (The entries to working desktops remain unaffected, so I guess I could just ignore the extraneous entries, but...) So I'd like to remove/edit the extraneous entries in LightDM. I've looked and looked for discussions on how to do so, but haven't had much luck. Any suggestions on how to go about editing the login menu in 11.10?

  Ignore the palm trees here. I have some oak-like trees when I'm zoomed in: They disappear when I zoom out: Is this normal? Is this something to do with draw distance? How can I change this so my trees don't disappear? The reason I ask is because my installation had a weird terrain glitch.   Though with Oracle JDeveloper 11g the problem of the IDE not rendering JSF pages properly in the visual editor has become rare, there always is a way for the creative to break IDE functionality. A possible reason for the visual editor in JDeveloper to break is a failed dependency reference, which often is in a custom JSF PhaseListener configured in the faces-config.xml file. To avoid this from happening, surround the code in your PhaseListener class with the following statement (for example in the afterPhase method) public void afterPhase(PhaseEvent phaseEvent) {   if(!ADFContext.getCurrent().isDesigntime()){ ... listener code here ... } } The reason why the visual editor in Oracle JDeveloper fails rendering the WYSIWYG view has to do with how the live preview is created. To produce the visual display of a view, JDeveloper actually runs the ADF Faces view in JSF, which then also invokes defined PhaseListeners. With the code above, you check whether the PhaseListener code is executed at runtime or design time.If it is executed in design time, you ignore all calls to external resources that are not available at design time.

  I am having trouble changing my login screen background. I can select the default wall paper, the Kde-default one, but when ever I select my own custom wallpaper, there is no image, just a solid color. Normally, I would just ignore it, but the thing that bugs me is that this is a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 64bit, and the OS before this one, the one I overwrote, I had no trouble using the exact same image as the background... Settings In the System Settings application, Login Screen settings, Background tab, enable background, Under "Background", selected Picture, under options, selected Position: Scaled. Colors: Single Color. Blending: No Blending.

UPDATE 1 : whats the meaning of Unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery ? and yes it does not say we should use libraries but we should have them on external files for that reason i asked my question.
