• Drawing Directed Acyclic Graphs: Minimizing edge crossing?

  Laying out the verticies in a DAG in a tree form (i.e. verticies with no in-edges on top, verticies dependent only on those on the next level, etc.) is rather simple without graph drawing algorithms such as Efficient Sugimiya. However, is there a simple algorithm to do this that minimizes edge crossing? (For some graphs, it may be impossible to completely eliminate edge crossing.) A picture says a thousand words, so is there an algorithm that would suggest: instead of: EDIT: As the picture suggests, a vertex's inputs are always on top and outputs are always below, which is another barrier to just pasting in an existing layout algorithm.

• Download estimator control using JavaScript and Ajax

  I would like to implement the download estimator using the JavaScript and the Ajax. I have gone trough Google to find the existing implementations for the download estimator and i found most of the time asking user bandwidth and then calculating the number is strategy. It good approach and there is hardly anything on reliable to get the estimated time right. What i would like to try is use Ajax to request file size 100KB - 200 KB and do the maths get the number and update the display. Now this is surrounded with so many questions like network, number of packets formed, proxies etc ? These all factors are sufficient to turn down the approach. But THIS IS HOW I HAVE TO DO THIS ? Now i would like here inputs from you all to make it better (as good discussion)? what all can be added to this ? Can we get to know bandwidth user using without asking ?

I'm developing a website in asp.net webforms with 3 layers; UI, BLL and DAL The website is already developed, but i like have more control about the unit tests of each form Pass specific values at specific inputs for i see, if application survives or not. I already study about NUnit but in webforms in UI layer how can apply these tests? What i wnat is get some way to test UI (validations) without have to access to the BLL as i was an user. • jQuery: jquery form plugin syntax?

  I'm using jquery with the jquery form plugin. I read through a bunch of posts, the docs, etc., and I'm still having trouble with what I believe to be simple. I have a form with some simple text inputs and a couple textareas, and I have this link that I want to trigger submission of that form to a specific method (/email): <a id="email-data">Send Email</a> and this jquery in doc ready: $('#email-data').click(function() { var options = { url: '/email/', success: alert('Email sent.') }; $('#report-giftcard-sales-form').ajaxSubmit(options); }); So I would expect it to submit to my /email method, but no such luck. Currently I just have the /email method logging a debug message, so it's as simple as can be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  What is the difference between a rules engine and an expert system? Example1: Let's say that I have a program that determines the expiration date of a new driver's license. It takes inputs like visa expiration date, passport number, birthday, etc. It determines the expiration date of the driver's license from this input. It can even give an error if the input did not have enough valid identifications to allow a new driver's license. Example2: Let's say I am making an online version of the game Monopoly. I want the ability to change the rules of the game (say $400 for passing go or no one can buy properties until they land on the same property twice, etc). I have a module in the code to handle these rules. Are these both rules engines or are they expert systems? They both seem so similar. Is it just a synonym?

• MVC2 Client-Side Validation for injected Ajax response

  Hi, I have the following scenario for an MVC 2 website. The user checks a radio. I make a jQuery GET to retrieve some html (partial view + view model). The view-model is annotated with validation attributes. I need client-side validation for the new html's inputs. I tried placing the following line in the partial view: <% Html.EnableClientValidation(); % I was naive. Also for the obtained html I use jQuery's .html to populate my placeholder, which also would execute the javascript. Not that there is any. Is is possible to update the page's validation logic and metadata after the ajax call ? Any ideas (beside remote client side validation) ? Thanks in advance.

• C++ double division by 0.0 versus DBL_MIN

  When finding the inverse square root of a double, is it better to clamp invalid non-positive inputs at 0.0 or MIN_DBL? (In my example below double b may end up being negative due to floating point rounding errors and because the laws of physics are slightly slightly fudged in the game.) Both division by 0.0 and MIN_DBL produce the same outcome in the game because 1/0.0 and 1/DBL_MIN are effectively infinity. My intuition says MIN_DBL is the better choice, but would there be any case for using 0.0? • Powershell - Splitting variable into chunks

  I have written a query in Powershell interrogating a F5 BIG-IP box through it's iControl API to bring back CPU usage etc. Using this code (see below) I can return the data back into a CSV format which is fine. However the $csvdata variable contains all the data. I need to be able to take this variable and for each line split each column of data into a seperate variable. • JavaEE Application Server or Lightweight Container?

  Let me preface this by saying this is not an actual situation of mine but I'm asking this question more for my own knowledge and to get other people's inputs here. I've used both Spring and EJB3/JBoss, and for the smaller types of applications I've built, Spring (+Tomcat when needed) has been much simpler to use. However, when scaling up to larger applications that require things like load balancing and clustering, is Spring still a viable solution? Or is it time to turn to a solution like EJB3/JBoss when you start to get big enough to need that? I'm not sure if I've scoped the problem well enough to get a good answer, so please let me know. • In Haskell, how can you sort a list of infinite lists of strings?

  So basically, if I have a (finite or infinite) list of (finite or infinite) lists of strings, is it possible to sort the list by length first and then by lexicographic order, excluding duplicates? A sample input/output would be: Input: [["a", "b",...], ["a", "aa", "aaa"], ["b", "bb", "bbb",...], ...] Output: ["a", "b", "aa", "bb", "aaa", "bbb", ...] I know that the input list is not a valid haskell expression but suppose that there is an input like that. I tried using merge algorithm but it tends to hang on the inputs that I give it. Can somebody explain and show a decent sorting function that can do this? If there isn't any function like that, can you explain why? In case somebody didn't understand what I meant by the sorting order, I meant that shortest length strings are sorted first AND if one or more strings are of same length then they are sorted using < operator. • Should a Unit-test replicate functionality or Test output?

  I've run into this dilemma several times. Should my unit-tests duplicate the functionality of the method they are testing to verify it's integrity? OR Should unit tests strive to test the method with numerous manually created instances of inputs and expected outputs? I'm mainly asking the question for situations where the method you are testing is reasonably simple and it's proper operation can be verified by glancing at the code for a minute. Simplified example (in ruby): def concat_strings(str1, str2) return str1 + " AND " + str2 end Simplified functionality-replicating test for the above method: def test_concat_strings 10.times do str1 = random_string_generator str2 = random_string_generator assert_equal (str1 + " AND " + str2), concat_strings(str1, str2) end end I understand that most times the method you are testing won't be simple enough to justify doing it this way. But my question remains; is this a valid methodology in some circumstances (why or why not)?

  Hi all, I am new to Entity Framework and please pardon my ignorance. We have a simple application written using SQL Server and ADO.Net. Now we have got a new requirement that, whenever a particular rows get updated by our application, some business logic has to happen. I have been looking into Triggers in SQL server and it looks like we can do it using triggers. I am also looking at Entity Framework's OnPropertyChange capability. Is it possible to do it with "OnPropertyChange"? I mean, Can I create a model and implement "OnPropertyChange" method? And when our application modifies the rows using ADO.Net, then will it fire "OnPropertyChange" event so that my custome code in "OnPropertyChange" excutes? • Running a program in another one?

  Hi, I've written a program in C++. It's just using the console to have it as portable as possible. Unfortunately, many Windows-Users seem not to understand how to use the program (Linux Users are just fine with it :) ). So I'd like to write a GUI for that program. As this needs to run on Windows only, I'd like to write it in C#. But I want to maintain the GUI apart from the original program. So basically, I need a way to include a compiled *.exe into another program. Is there a way to catch the console output from another program and send inputs to it? • question about select() and range of for loop to read sockets

  Just a quick question about using select(). I'm using select() to read from multiple sockets. When I looked up examples on how to use select(), a lot of tutorials showed going through for loops and checking for FD_ISSET. The problem I have with those tutorials is that the for loop starts from i = 0. and checks if the bit has been set for the file descriptor i using FD_ISSET. Couldn't the for loop start from say your minfd (just like how you would keep track of maxfd)?? Or am I missing something?? Following link is an example of such for loop (look at the fourth example that he gives) http://www.developerweb.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2933 If that was the only example out there that used such for loop, I might understand it was a mistake or bad coding but I've seen several examples of such for loop of uselessly going through literally thousands of sockets and I'm convinced I'm missing something.   I am trying to learn C# coming from C++. I am writing just some basic console stuff to get a feel for it and was wondering if it is possible to do simple chaining of inputs in C#. For example in C++: cout<<"Enter two numbers: "; cin >> int1 >> int2; You could then just input 3 5 and hit enter and the values will be fine. In C# however I have to split it up(as far as I can tell) like this: Console.Write("Enter the first number: "; int1 = (char)Console.Read(); Console.Writeline(""); Console.Write("Enter the second number: "; int2 = (char)Console.Read(); Maybe I am just missing something.

  Hi, I'm writing a Maven plugin that merges CSS files together. So all the CSS files that match /foo/bar/*.css might get merged to /foo/merged.css. A concern is that in a file such as /foo/bar/baz.css there might be a property such as: background: url("images/pic.jpg") So when the file is merged into /foo/merged.css this will need to be changed to background: url("bar/images/pic.jpg") The recalculated URL obviously depends on 3 factors: original URL original CSS file location merged CSS file location Assuming that the original and merged CSS files are both on the same filesystem, is there a general formula (or Java library) that can be used to calculate the new url given these 3 inputs?   How do I handle big integers in C#? I have a function that will give me the product of divisors: private static int GetDivisorProduct(int N, int product) { for (int i = 1; i < N; i++) { if (N % i == 0) { Console.WriteLine(i.ToString()); product *= i; } } return product; } The calling function is GetDivisorProduct(N, 1) If the result is bigger than 4 digits , I should obtain only the last 4 digits. ( E.g. If I give an input of 957, the output is 7493 after trimming out only the last four values. The actual result is 876467493.). Other sample inputs: If I give 10000, the output is 0. The BigInteger class has been removed from the C# library! How can I get the last four digits?

  I am creating simple ui-datetime directive. It splits javascript Date object into _date, _hours and _minutes parts. _date uses jquery ui datepicker, _hours and _minutes - number inputs. When I tried to use isolated scope - nothing works. ngModel.$viewValue === undefined. When I tried to use new scope (my example, not so good variant imho) - ngModel uses value on newly created scope. Of course I can create directive with isolated scope and work with ngModel value through "=expression" (example). But I think that working with ngModelController is a better practice. My questions: Can I use ngModelController with isolated scope? If it is not possible which solution is better for creating such component?

• Are evolutionary algorithms and neural networks used in the same problem domains?

  I am trying to get a feel for the difference between the various classes of machine-learning algorithms. I understand that the implementations of evolutionary algorithms are quite different from the implementations of neural networks. However, they both seem to be geared at determining a correlation between inputs and outputs from a potentially noisy set of training/historical data. From a qualitative perspective, are there problem domains that are better targets for neural networks as opposed to evolutionary algorithms? I've skimmed some articles that suggest using them in a complementary fashion. Is there a decent example of a use case for that? Thanks

  I have a number of inputs on a page function as JQ UI datepicker. Each needs to have different settings. I want to minimize the JS so I save the settings as an attribute in each individual . <input type="text" class="datepicker" name="dateofbirth" id="dateofbirth" size="20" value="" options="{ dateFormat: 'yy-mm-dd',changeYear: true,yearRange: '1920:2010'}" /> <input type="text" class="datepicker" name="expdate" id="expdate" size="20" value="" options="{ yearRange: '2011:2020'}" /> I use js to load the options dynamically as the settings. $(document).ready(function(){ $(".datepicker").each(function(index){ $(this).datepicker("option" , $(this).attr('options')); }); }); datepicker is not functioning. If I empty the parentheses after $this.datepicker it works fine. I have also tried another way to assign settings. ("option",...) no dice.

• Recommended way to manage persistent PHP script processes?

  First off - hello, this is my first Stack Overflow question so I'll try my best to communicate properly. The title of my question may be a bit ambiguous so let me expand upon it immediately: I'm planning a project which involves taking data inputs from several "streaming" APIs, Twitter being one example. I've got a basic script coded up in PHP which runs indefinitely from the command line, taking input from the Twitter streaming API and doing very basic things with it. My eventual objective is to have several such processes running (perhaps daemonized using the System Daemon PEAR class), and I would like to be able to manage them from some governing process (also a PHP script). By manage I mean basic operations such as stop/start and (most crucially) automatically restarting a process that crashes. I would appreciate any pointers on how best to approach this process management angle. Again, apologies if this question is too expansive - tips on more tightly focused lines of enquiry would be appreciated if necessary. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your answers.

• Executing certain code for every method call in C++

  I have a C++ class I want to inspect. So, I would like to all methods print their parameters and the return, just before getting out. The latter looks somewhat easy. If I do return() for everything, a macro #define return(a) cout << (a) << endl; return (a) would do it (might be wrong) if I padronize all returns to parenthesized (or whatever this may be called). If I want to take this out, just comment out the define. However, printing inputs seems more difficult. Is there a way I can do it, using C++ structures or with a workaroud hack?
