  • Adeos's role w.r.t Linux

    - by Anisha Kaul
The event pipeline The fundamental Adeos structure one must keep in mind is the chain of client domains asking for event control. A domain is a kernelbased software component which can ask the Adeos layer to be notified of: · Every incoming external interrupt, or autogenerated virtual interrupt; · Every system call issued by Linux applications, · Other system events triggered by the kernel code (e.g. Linux task switching, signal notification, Linux task exits etc.). From: Life with Adeos: http://www.xenomai.org/documentation/xenomai-2.4/pdf/Life-with-Adeos-rev-B.pdf Question: Adeos is supposed to be between the hardware and the Linux kernel, I can understand about Adeos telling the Linux about hardware interrupts but Why should Adeos know about the "system call" issued by Linux?

  • Linux: Schedule command to run once after reboot (RunOnce equivalent)

    - by Christopher Parker
I'd like to schedule a command to run after reboot on a Linux box. I know how to do this so the command consistently runs after every reboot with a @reboot crontab entry, however I only want the command to run once. After it runs, it should be removed from the queue of commands to run. I'm essentially looking for a Linux equivalent to RunOnce in the Windows world. In case it matters: $ uname -a Linux devbox 2.6.27.19-5-default #1 SMP 2009-02-28 04:40:21 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ bash --version GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (x86_64-suse-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc. $ cat /etc/SuSE-release SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64) VERSION = 11 PATCHLEVEL = 0 Is there an easy, scriptable way to do this?

  • Choosing a Linux distribution

    - by Luke Puplett
Dangerous territory with this question so please try to be impartial and instead focus on what to look for when choosing a Linux distribution. I'm completely new to Linux. I thought it'd never happen but I need to have a Linux box to play with and I have a spare fanless Atom PC (32-bit only). I'll be using the machine as a non-commercial hobby server, the trouble is, I don't even know how to compare Linux distributions and why people pick one over another. If anything, I want to have an easy install from USB stick. My question is: what do you look for when choosing a (free?) Linux distribution for a server? If you can, please explain what sorts of things actually differ between one and another without saying which you think is better, just the facts. The way I see it, Linux as a server is just an SSH console and I find it hard to imagine what could be different between one and another.

  • Mount linux partition as Windows network share over internet

    - by CptEO
I have a Linux server running RHEL 6. I have two Windows servers. All servers are connected directly to the web with an external IP, they are not in a local lan. What I would like to achieve is to setup the Linux server so that it offers a single share (the whole partition) that can be mounted as network drive within Windows. I don't want to use any 3rd party software to access the linux server because I want to use the linux server as a backup for Bare Metal Restore. In order to do so, I need to be able to access the linux partition from within the Windows Recovery Enviroment where I cannot install any 3rd party software. The linux server should only be accessible from given IP addresses (e.g. the 2 windows servers). Does anyone know if the setup I would like to have is possible?

  • Java issues on OpenVZ Ubuntu 11.04 (.jar/.sh files)

    - by IWillNotChange
I've had a whole line of messes with java and .jar files. I've tried both OpenJDK (from software installer) and about three repositories for Sun. /Desktop# java -jar -Xmx1024m ss.jar Exception in thread "main" java.awt.HeadlessException at java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.checkHeadless(GraphicsEnvironment.java:173) at java.awt.Window.<init>(Window.java:476) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:419) at java.awt.Frame.<init>(Frame.java:384) at javax.swing.JFrame.<init>(JFrame.java:174) at org.powerbot.bd.<init>(Unknown Source) at org.powerbot.Boot.main(Unknown Source) Two separate errors: ~/Desktop# ./ss.sh [SEVERE] org.server.Boot: Default heap size of 490m too small, restarting with 768m and about 30 different crashes were it just "aborts" with a huge file dump. Each time I've tried something a little different, whether it be updating Java or just changing -Xmx1024 to -Xmx1024m to get rid of the heap. Personally I think it has something to do with OpenVZ, but Google hasn't saved me this time, I need someone who can get to the bottom of my problem. java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) is my current install. Running ss.sh gives me: (I'd post the entire log but its long) # # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # SIGILL (0x4) at pc=0x00002b14278e6fa0, pid=9301, tid=47365590714112 # # JRE version: 6.0_26-b03 # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (20.1-b02 mixed mode linux-amd64 compressed oops) # Problematic frame: # C [ld-linux-x86-64.so.2+0x14fa0] _dl_make_stack_executable+0x2b50 # # If you would like to submit a bug report, please visit: # http://java.sun.com/webapps/bugreport/crash.jsp # The crash happened outside the Java Virtual Machine in native code. # See problematic frame for where to report the bug. # I'm willing to let someone who knows what they are talking about view it and try and sort this out. • ATI Radeon HD 6870 Driver fails to install default-policy.sh does not support version

    - by Rogue Coder
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, with everything updated completely. I'm using Ubuntu Classic, because Unity fails to run, supposedly because of my video card. The drivers for the Radeon HD 6870 series is apparently lacking, but I found a post stating the newest version has full support for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal. That post is slightly old, so i grabbed 11.3 for Ubuntu x86 off the ATI website. When I run the installation program, I receive the following error: > ./ati-driver-installer-11-3-x86.x86_64.run Created directory fglrx-install.uREFoO Verifying archive integrity... All good. • Does my use of the strategy pattern violate the fundamental MVC pattern in iOS?

    - by Goodsquirrel
I'm about to use the 'strategy' pattern in my iOS app, but feel like my approach violates the somehow fundamental MVC pattern. My app is displaying visual "stories", and a Story consists (i.e. has @properties) of one Photo and one or more VisualEvent objects to represent e.g. animated circles or moving arrows on the photo. Each VisualEvent object therefore has a eventType @property, that might be e.g. kEventTypeCircle or kEventTypeArrow. All events have things in common, like a startTime @property, but differ in the way they are being drawn on the StoryPlayerView. Currently I'm trying to follow the MVC pattern and have a StoryPlayer object (my controller) that knows about both the model objects (like Story and all kinds of visual events) and the view object StoryPlayerView. To chose the right drawing code for each of the different visual event types, my StoryPlayer is using a switch statement. @implementation StoryPlayer // (...) - (void)showVisualEvent:(VisualEvent *)event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView { switch (event.eventType) { case kEventTypeCircle: [self showCircleEvent:event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView]; break; case kEventTypeArrow: [self showArrowDrawingEvent:event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView]; break; // (...) } But switch statements for type checking are bad design, aren't they? According to Uncle Bob they lead to tight coupling and can and should almost always be replaced by polymorphism. Having read about the "Strategy"-Pattern in Head First Design Patterns, I felt this was a great way to get rid of my switch statement. So I changed the design like this: All specialized visual event types are now subclasses of an abstract VisualEvent class that has a showOnStoryPlayerView: method. @interface VisualEvent : NSObject - (void)showOnStoryPlayerView:(StoryPlayerView *)storyPlayerView; // abstract Each and every concrete subclass implements a concrete specialized version of this drawing behavior method. @implementation CircleVisualEvent - (void)showOnStoryPlayerView:(StoryPlayerView *)storyPlayerView { [storyPlayerView drawCircleAtPoint:self.position color:self.color lineWidth:self.lineWidth radius:self.radius]; } The StoryPlayer now simply calls the same method on all types of events. @implementation StoryPlayer - (void)showVisualEvent:(VisualEvent *)event onStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView { [event showOnStoryPlayerView:storyPlayerView]; } The result seems to be great: I got rid of the switch statement, and if I ever have to add new types of VisualEvents in the future, I simply create new subclasses of VisualEvent. And I won't have to change anything in StoryPlayer. But of cause this approach violates the MVC pattern since now my model has to know about and depend on my view! Now my controller talks to my model and my model talks to the view calling methods on StoryPlayerView like drawCircleAtPoint:color:lineWidth:radius:. But this kind of calls should be controller code not model code, right?? Seems to me like I made things worse. I'm confused! Am I completely missing the point of the strategy pattern? Is there a better way to get rid of the switch statement without breaking model-view separation?

  • how do I get only the stack trace from my app in rails?

    The default behavior seems to be printing large stack traces like ArgumentError (too few arguments): app/controllers/players_controller.rb:55:in `format' app/controllers/players_controller.rb:55:in `create' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/rack/request_handler.rb:92:in `process_request' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_request_handler.rb:207:in `main_loop' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:400:in `start_request_handler' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:351:in `handle_spawn_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/utils.rb:184:in `safe_fork' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:349:in `handle_spawn_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:352:in `__send__' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:352:in `main_loop' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:196:in `start_synchronously' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:163:in `start' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/railz/application_spawner.rb:209:in `start' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/spawn_manager.rb:262:in `spawn_rails_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server_collection.rb:126:in `lookup_or_add' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/spawn_manager.rb:256:in `spawn_rails_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server_collection.rb:80:in `synchronize' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server_collection.rb:79:in `synchronize' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/spawn_manager.rb:255:in `spawn_rails_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/spawn_manager.rb:154:in `spawn_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/spawn_manager.rb:287:in `handle_spawn_application' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:352:in `__send__' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:352:in `main_loop' /dh/passenger/lib/phusion_passenger/abstract_server.rb:196:in `start_synchronously' but I only want to see the stack trace from my app. In this case, it's the top 3 lines, which consist of the actual Error, and then the parts of my app. In this case I'd prefer to see this: ArgumentError (too few arguments): app/controllers/players_controller.rb:55:in `format' app/controllers/players_controller.rb:55:in `create' Is this possible?

  • How to Find Your IP Address in Ubuntu Linux

    - by Trevor Bekolay
In Windows, we use the command-line program ipconfig to find out our IP address. How do you find it in Ubuntu? We will show you two locations easily accessible through the GUI and, of course, a terminal command that will get your IP address in no time. The first location, and the easiest in most cases, is found by right clicking the network icon in the notification area and clicking Connection Information. This brings up a window which has a bunch of information, including your IP address. The second location, which shows you more detail than this first method, is at System > Administration > Network Tools. Select the right network device, and you’ve got a ton of information at your fingertips. Finally, if you can’t tear yourself away from a terminal window, the command to type in is: ifconfig Yes, it’s only one character different than ipconfig. Who would have guessed? As it turns out, you’re always a few clicks or keystrokes away from finding your IP address in Ubuntu. Isn’t choice great? • Our embedded linux system won't recognize a USB Device if it is plugged in before powerup. Suggestions?

    - by Blaine
We are developing on a small embedded device. This device us a gumstix overo board running OpenEmbedded linux. We have our development almost completely done, and have run into the strangest of bugs that we can't figure out. We have a USB Device (Spectrophotometer) that has a USB2.0 Connection and an external power supply for the light source. Typical behavior is that you plug in the power supply, then the USB connection to a host. When the usb connection is detected by the device, the device boots up and enables the light source and fan. The device is then able to be used by the host system. The problem is that if the device is plugged into the Gumstix before we turn on the Gumstix, the USB Device apparently is not probed by the system (and hence does not turn on). Under a normal situation, when the connection is initialized by plugging in the usb cable, the spectro turns itself on and becomes available to the system (this can be seen via "lsusb" typically). Neither of these things are happening. There is no device detected via "lsusb" and no dmesg errors of any kind that we can see. It is as if the device is not plugged in. The device does show up and work fine if we unplug the USB cable and plug it back in once the system is booted up. It turns on and shows up on the usb bus, and we can access it with our driver. On any other desktop or laptop, it does not matter if the host system is on or off when we plug in the spectrometer. This behavior is what I would consider to be "normal" - that the usb system is probed and initialized at boot time, and the usb devices come online. In other words, our system is fully functional as long as we plug in the usb device after the system is booted up. Unfortunately this isn't possible in our final product - everything comes on at once. Additional Info: 1) We have tried a flash drive attached to the system when the system is turned off. Booting up the system brings the flash drive online, as expected 2) There are no messages regarding the spectro or usb device (using dmesg). "lsusb" only lists the USB hubs / controllers. It is literally as if the device is not present and not plugged in. 3) We have tried a brand new image from gumstix and an older image from last year. Both images have this problem. This problem exists on all 3 gumstix devices we use. Does anyone have any suggestions? From what I can tell it isn't really possible to do a complete "reboot" of the usb system that is a complete emulation of "unplugging" and "replugging" a usb device. I feel like what is happening is that there is no initial probe on the usb bus that would trigger the usb handshaking, but this is somehow specific to the spectro. This seems to be a kernel issue or at least an issue in how the kernel is initializing the usb subsystem. I'm not really sure though. I have tried the gumstix mailing list, but there doesn't seem to be anyone who has seen this issue before. Any advice or suggestions on where to start looking would be fantastic. Thank you! • How to Customize Fonts and Colors for Gnome Panels in Ubuntu Linux

    - by The Geek
Earlier this week we showed you how to make the Gnome Panels totally transparent, but you really need some customized fonts and colors to make the effect work better. Here’s how to do it. This article is the first part of a multi-part series on how to customize the Ubuntu desktop, written by How-To Geek reader and ubergeek, Omar Hafiz. Changing the Gnome Colors the Easy Way You’ll first need to install Gnome Color Chooser which is available in the default repositories (the package name is gnome-color-chooser). Then go to System > Preferences > Gnome Color Chooser to launch the program. When you see all these tabs you immediately know that Gnome Color Chooser does not only change the font color of the panel, but also the color of the fonts all over Ubuntu, desktop icons, and many other things as well. Now switch to the panel tab, here you can control every thing about your panels. You can change font, font color, background and background color of the panels and start menus. Tick the “Normal” option and choose the color you want for the panel font. If you want you can change the hover color of the buttons on the panel by too. A little below the color option is the font options, this includes the font, font size, and the X and Y positioning of the font. The first two options are pretty straight forward, they change the typeface and the size. The X-Padding and Y-Padding may confuse you but they are interesting, they may give a nice look for your panels by increasing the space between items on your panel like this: X-Padding:   Y-Padding:   The bottom half of the window controls the look of your start menus which is the Applications, Places, and Systems menus. You can customize them just the way you did with the panel.   Alright, this was the easy way to change the font of your panels. Changing the Gnome Theme Colors the Command-Line Way The other hard (not so hard really) way will be changing the configuration files that tell your panel how it should look like. In your Home Folder, press Ctrl+H to show the hidden files, now find the file “.gtkrc-2.0”, open it and insert this line in it. If there are any other lines in the file leave them intact. include “/home/<username>/.gnome2/panel-fontrc” Don’t forget to replace the <user_name> with you user account name. When done close and save the file. Now navigate the folder “.gnome2” from your Home Folder and create a new file and name it “panel-fontrc”. Open the file you just created with a text editor and paste the following in it: style “my_color”{fg[NORMAL] = “#FF0000”}widget “*PanelWidget*” style “my_color”widget “*PanelApplet*” style “my_color” This text will make the font red. If you want other colors you’ll need to replace the Hex value/HTML Notation (in this case #FF0000) with the value of the color you want. To get the hex value you can use GIMP, Gcolor2 witch is available in the default repositories or you can right-click on your panel > Properties > Background tab then click to choose the color you want and copy the Hex value. Don’t change any other thing in the text. When done, save and close. Now press Alt+F2 and enter “killall gnome-panel” to force it to restart or you can log out and login again. Most of you will prefer the first way of changing the font and color for it’s ease of applying and because it gives you much more options but, some may not have the ability/will to download and install a new program on their machine or have reasons of their own for not to using it, that’s why we provided the two way. • Recommended language and IDE for simple linux application [on hold]

    - by niklon
I want to write a simple program on Debian with Gnome. Application will act as a side bar, giving simple information on online servers statuses. I preferably have a black transparent background(Terminal-like). I'm asking this question because I was previously writing programs in .NET C# for myself, and now I don't want to get to Mono, but something more conventional. What language should I choose for this task? What would be the recommended way to do it?(eg. what IDE)

  • How to Back Up Your Linux System With Back In Time

    - by Chris Hoffman
Ubuntu includes Déjà Dup, an integrated backup tool, but some people prefer Back In Time instead. Back In Time has several advantages over Déjà Dup, including a less-opaque backup format, integrated backup file browser, and more configurability. Déjà Dup still has a few advantages, notably its optional encryption and simpler interface, but Back In Time gives Déjà Dup a run for its money. • Linux distro for software development support?

    - by Xie Jilei
I've spent too much time on setup & maintain a development server, which contains following tools: Common services like SSH, BIND, rsync, etc. Subversion, Git. Apache server, which runs CGit, Trac, Webmin, phpmyadmin, phppgadmin, etc. Jetty, which runs Archiva and Hudson. Bugzilla. PostgresSQL server, MySQL server. I've created a lot of Debian packages, like my-trac-utils, my-bugzilla-utils, my-bind9-utils, my-mysql-utils, etc. to make my life more convenient. However, I still feel I need a lot more utils. And I've spent a lot of time to maintain these packages, too. I think there maybe many developers doing the same things. As tools like subversion, git, trac are so common today. It's not to hard to install and configure each of them, but it took a long time to install them all. And it's time consuming to maintain them. Like backup the data, plot the usage graph and generate web reports. (gitstat for example) So, I'd like to hear if there exist any pre-configured distro for Development Server purpose, i.e., something like BackTrack for hackers?

I have tar the current releases shared dir from the old server and transfered them over to the new server. I have then unpack the tar in the apps directory to the new location which is a different URL path. My problem is now as you can see below that the path on the current - is pointing to the old url. ( i ran ls -la to see owenership) How can i change this current path to read with my new web address? current releases shared sitepack.tar root@server1:/var/www/clients/client1/NEWSITE.com/web/apps# ls -la current - /var/www/OLDSITE.com/web/apps/releases/20120130171636 root@server1:/var/www/clients/client1/NEWSITE.com/web/apps#

  • IPC linux huge transaction

    - by poly
I'm building and application that requires huge transactions/sec of data and I need to use IPC to for the mutithreaded mutliprocceses communication, I know that there are a lot of methods to be used but not sure which one to choose for this application. This is what the application is gonna have, 4 processes, each process has 4 threads, the data chunk that needs to be transferred between two or more threads is around 400KB. I found that fifo is good choice except that it's 64K which is not that big so i'll need to modify and recompile the kernel but not sure if this is the right thing to do? Anyway, I'm open to any suggestions and I'd like to squeeze your experience in this :) and I appreciate it in advance.

  • Process monitoring in Linux environment?

    - by poly
I'm trying to write a multi threaded/processes application and it need to know how to monitor a process from another process all the time. So here is what I have, I have a 2 processes, each with multiple threads that handle the network part, then another 2 process also with multiple threads that interact with DB and with the network processes, what I need to do is that if for example one of the network processes goes down the DB process start sending to the live network process until the second one is up again. I'm using fifo between the DB and the network process. I was thinking of sending messages with message passing all the time but not sure whether this is a good idea or I need to use some other IPC for this issue, or probably neither is good and I need to use entirely something else?
