• Can I get my video card to output a DVI and VGA signal at the same time?

  Hey All, I've got: a lovely 24" monitor, w/both DVI and VGA inputs, a personal desktop w/a Radeon HD Pro 2400 video card (both DVI and VGA outputs) a work laptop w/both outputs, and a KVM switch that handles VGA only Right now I've got laptop connected to the monitor's VGA, and the desktop connected to the DVI. This works, but requires me to switch the KVM and monitor input sources separately, which annoys me (I switch back & forth a lot to make skype calls & manage my music). I'd like to feed both VGA and DVI signals out of my desktop so I can do quick things on my desktop & switch right back, but then when I'm done working, switch the monitor over to DVI to get the crisper picture. Alas, just attaching both VGA and DVI cables to my desktop's video card did not do the trick. Can this card be persuaded to output both signals at the same time? Many thanks! -Roy

• Windows Color Calibrator Does Not Retain Color Settings

  When I try to calibrate the monitor using Windows 7's color calibrator, the monitor rejects changes to the color settings. For example, one of my monitors has a blueish tinge. If I click my mouse to tone down the blue and then let go of my mouse the monitor will go back to being blueish. At the moment, I am getting around the problem by using the color controls in the monitor's on screen displays. How can I get the color calibrator to work? Update: I tried checking the color settings in the ATI Radeon Catalyst Control Center and noticed that I can't do anything. The "Reactivate ATI color controls" button keeps flashing and any changes I try to make are discarded instantly.

• Force the computer to always use current display settings

  So I'm having a terrible black screen problem with my new installation of Windows 8. The screen basically goes to black every time I turn it on or sleep, or connect to an external or monitor. I dont really know what steps actually cause the problem and cant seem to figure what steps allow the screen to come back, besides forcing restarts, going to sleep and waking up, and smashing Win + P. I have a strong feeling it's because the Switchable graphics I have (Intel HD + Radeon 5060), so I'm looking for a way to make the computer always use a specified mode (i.e the current mode I'm on, that does show stuff on the screen) and force it to use it everytime? Any ideas? EDIT: I've Installed all the latest drivers I've found. Tried most of the solutions around the web for this problem. Updated the BIOS to UEFI (from HP Support Assistant), etc. Laptop is an HP- Envy 14

• Performance difference between MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz) vs Air (1.7 GHz)?

  I'm comparing these two Apple laptops: MacBook Pro (13", 2011 model): 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on 2.4GHz configuration MacBook Air (13", 2011 model): 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 onboard memory Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory There's definitely a gap between them in terms of CPU speed and graphics, but what practical difference would this make on a day-to-day basis? On the one hand, I love the sleek, thin appearance of the Air. On the other hand, I don't want a machine that's going to be dog-slow when doing tasks such as running Virtual Machines, dual-booting to Windows and running multiple instances of Visual Studio, and maybe some light gaming. Is there going to be a major difference that makes the MacBook Pro a more attractive purchase?

  I have an MSI-RC410 motherboard with onboard ATI Radeon XPress 200 series Graphics card. I have used OpenSuse-11.0 on my PC for over an year. but when I tried to upgrade to OpenSuse-11.1, I managed to install it only to find that several features were missing. for example /dev/cdrom was missing. Also install DVD of Fedora 11 did not work. I have also tried Ubuntu-9.10 live cd. When I boot from the CD i get the initramfs command prompt. Still able to install old versions of these OSs. What is the reason for this behavior? Does it have to do anything with the new version of the linux kernel not being compatible with my hardware? What should i do to install new versions of Linux?

  I own an older 32-bit Dell XPS 410 that I intended to use for gaming. Currently, I have a ATI Radeon 4000 series card installed, along with a Core 2 Duo and Ubuntu 12.10. I'm fairly certain that my problem is a GPU failure - but before I spend money on a new one, I want to make sure other components aren't the problem/if it would be cheaper just to buy a new PC. Here are my symptoms: Computer power button remains orange (usually green when successfully started.) A fan gets increasingly faster until powered off. Monitor remains black when started, receiving no signal. When powered on, the computer will power itself off near instantly, and then turn on again. If startup is successful, sometimes the screen will become jittered and unusable unless restarted. Is this just a GPU failure, or something more extensive like the motherboard?

• Monitor for HD video editing

  I have been researching for days and nights on a good monitor to buy for a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 2600 XT (256mb). It will be used extensively for HD video editing (1080p) and photo editing, and likely also digital/3D animation next year(a lot of FCP + CS4). I am a student, so money is a little bit of an issue, but I want something that I'll be able to use semi-professionally after I'm done school, and am willing to finance something if it is worth the cost. I'm HOPING for something under $1000 though. The IPS Ultrasharps from Dell seem to be getting good reviews from other video editors. Accurate colour correction is a concern for me (hopefully something that covers Adobe spectrum), as well as a decent response time, HD resolutions, and DVI port. Also something with good gradient/definition in black areas, as this is difficult for editing on most LCDs. 1X1 pixel, brightness, good DVD playback etc. Hopefully this is not impossible to find for under $2000!

• Visual Studio hangs Windows

  I have: Windows XP Pro SP3 with latest updates, drivers, .NET, etc. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2GB RAM 150GB HD ATI Radeon HD 3400 Recently (as early as a week ago) Visual C++ (both 2005 Pro and 2008 Express) started hanging up my computer. Whenever they are run, after 5-20 minutes of work the computer freezes. Everything becomes unresponsive, including the mouse cursor. No combination of keys does anything. What's strange, is that Winamp/Firefox continues to play whatever it was playing at the time (internet radio, mp3 playlist, etc). The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. I've run CCleaner and a full AVG antivirus scan, both of which found nothing suspicious. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

• No GUI after upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 (boots to command line)

  I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (network upgrade using the update manager, from 9.04 which had different graphics related problems) and when I try to boot into it all I get a small Ubuntu logo, flickering text and then the tty1 command line with a logon prompt. startx gives following error: Fatal server error: no screens found I traced down a tutorial that said I needed the latest graphics drivers (Gigabyte ATI Radeon 4650 HD installed with 9.10 catalyst drivers) so I did using the 'sh' command and a USB stick (I have a working Windows partition) and it installed fine but did not fix the problem. Edit: Thanks to UK and Arjan van Bentem below I was able to understand the full error message of start x: Parse error on lone 2 of /etc/X11/xorg.conf 'nameserver' is not a valid keyword in this section Fatal server error: no screens found This has nothing to do with a graphical error (sorry if I misled anyone) but the xorg.conf file has 3 lines in it and lines 2-3 have an entry 'nameserver'. Using the nano command I commented out (using a # before the entries) the nameservers and can now boot Ubuntu. Thanks to everyone for their help.

  I formatted the drive and re-installed Windows 7 64-bit on a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5232. Now I am missing the graphics accelerator. I have been to Toshiba's website but cannot find the right one. Same is so for AMD. It has AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics. The machine is recognizing a standard VGA. I ordered a recovery disk on eBay and it was supposed to be here yesterday. Can anyone help with other options?

  Hi everybody. recently I've bought a VGA card, "ATI Radeon HD4650", and after that I installed it on my PC, i cant run any .exe files just from my CD-Rom ! even when i attempt to install the driver of VGA Card, I couldn't do that, So I downloaded it and installed it with no problems. after that when I try to install some games from DVD (more than 5 different games I have tried) it prompt me with: "setup.exe is not a valid win32 application" therefore I cant install the game, in addition I need to say that there's nothing wrong with DVD's and my DVD-Rom. I would really appreciate if you just can help me through this one !

• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • Windows 7 Via Hyperion 4-1 drivers

  I have a clean install of Win 7 on some relatively old hardware. Everything works pretty well however my cpu is pegged at 100% most of the time. Task Manager shows srvchost as being a main culprit of course but also system interrupts. I have a Biostar socket 478 MB with Via chipset. I have tried to find Windows 7 drivers for this but when I download and try to install what VIA/BIOSTAR say should be good for all OS's it will not load. I get a message saying can't find components for this OS. Anybody have any idea where I might find suitable drivers for the Chipset? BTW I'm not using the integrated graphics on the board but have a radeon 4500 pci-e card.

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My most expensive machine is a gaming rig complete with an ATI Radeon HD4850, Wolfdale 3.0 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 500 Gb hard drive, Antec 900 computer case, the works. I also have a 2-monitor set up. I'd have to say this thing has cost me a little more than a grand at this point, and I'd put the total value of the components at roughly $1300. • Computer becomes very slow (permanently) after running a bunch of apps

  Hello there, My computer with Windows XP installed becomes very slow after I ran some heavy tasks at a time. (play a full 3D online game while extracting a 4GB RAR archive) It freezes for about 200~500ms every few seconds, and this always happens if I do heavy tasks at once in my computer (for example, installing a program while playing games), and the lag remains permanently (even a reboot won't make it better) unless I repair-install the Windows. Since I have a low-end computer: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00 GHz, 512 MB of RAM ATI RADEON 9550 AGP 256 MB And the only way I used everytime to fix this problem is by repair-installing my Windows XP. So that I won't lose any data or installed programs. But I believe there's a better and faster way to fix this without repair-installing the Windows. Any idea?

  I have a problem that is driving me to the edge. My graphics card periodically looses power for a moment, then comes back. Once in a while it takes much longer, like 5 minutes. I have always tried rebooting during that period, since I don't know then. Black screen, with a no power message across my monitor. All equipment is only a few months old. The Motherboard is a few months old, MSI N9A2 Platinum Revision 1 (AMD). The Video Card is a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850 1GB. The power supply is an Ultra 700w My OS is Xp Pro, sp3 Any ideas or suggestions how to solve this

• HDMI audio disappears when the TV is turned off and on

  I have a new HTPC build (it's running Windows 7 Ultimate x64) and it has a ATI Radeon 6450 as graphics card. When I boot the PC, everything works fine. However, when the TV is turned off and then back on I notice there's no sound anymore. There are lots of other people who have this issue aswell. I've found this workaround however it doesn't seem to work for me. I have the newest drivers (12.4). Someone said it was fixed in 9.1 but I still have the issue. Any help is appreciated.

• Where Catalyst stores applist for switchable graphics?

  I cannot add an app to the list to manually set it to high performance (Radeon instead of Intel HD). When I browse for an exe, nothing happens, the list is still empty. So, maybe I can edit some .cfg or .ini? UPDATE This is NOT my screenshot... actually I've found it on the Net. The list with iexplore.exe is what I meant. When I click 'Browse' and choose any exe (Portal2.exe, for instance) nothing happens. The list is empty, so I cannot set mode for Portal2.exe.

• OpenGL support no longer available

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on?   I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

  What is it? And what causes it? Is it only for uncorrectable DIMM Errors(Troubleshooting DIMM errors)? When an UCE occurs, the memory controller causes an immediate reboot of the system. During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case.   I am thinking of assembling this system: AMD CPU (A8-3870 APU which has Radeon HD 6550D inside: 400 stream processors:xxx GFLOPS) nearly 110$ AMD Graphics card: HD 7750 (512 stream processors:819 GFLOPS peak performance) nearly 170$ Appropriate ram (1600MHz bus) Mainboard What GFLOPS level can I reach as a stable mode with using OpenCL and similar programs? Can I use all 912 stream processors at the same time? I am not trying to do a VS question. I need to know what could be better for scientific computing (%75 of the time) and gaming (%25 of the time) because I have a low budget. With "scientific calculations" I mean fluid dynamics/solid state physics simulating; with games I mean those that need openCL and PhysX.
