  • safe to setup NAS in virtual image with web server?

    - by Erik
    My current setup is Ubuntu Desktop, running Apache + MySQL + PHP stack. I use this image to host my small website to the outside world. I want to now run a virtual machine on the box, that will act as the FreeNAS box for my internal network. This sounds like a bad idea if the website gets hacked/attacked. Should I just give up and grab a dedicated machine instead? Can I instead virtualize the web server and NAS side by side on this machine?

  • Is it safe to use up all memory on linux server, not leaving anything for the cache?

    - by Temnovit
    I have a CentOS server fully dedicated to MySQL 5.5 (with innodb tables mostly). Server has 32 GB RAM, SSD disks, and avarage memory usage looks like this: So about 25GB is in use and about 6.5GB is cached. I am experiencing performance problems with WRITE queries, so I was thinking, is this the optimal cache size? I might increase innodb buffer size, so that linux cache would become smaller, or decrease it, so it would be bigger. What is the optimal used/cached memory balance for busy MySQL server on linux?

  • Using Plesk for webhosting on Ubuntu - Security risk or reasonably safe?

    - by user66952
    Sorry for this newb-question I'm pretty clueless about Plesk, only have limited debian (without Plesk) experience. If the question is too dumb just telling me how to ask a smarter one or what kind of info I should read first to improve the question would be appreciated as well. I want to offer a program for download on my website hosted on an Ubuntu 8.04.4 VPS using Plesk 9.3.0 for web-hosting. I have limited the ssh-access to the server via key only. When setting up the webhosting with Plesk it created an FTP-login & user is that a potential security risk that could bypass the key-only access? I think Plesk itself (even without the ftp-user-account) through it's web-interface could be a risk is that correct or are my concerns exaggerated? Would you say this solution makes a difference if I'm just using it for the next two weeks and then change servers to a system where I know more about security. 3.In other words is one less likely to get hacked within the first two weeks of having a new site up and running than in week 14&15? (due to occurring in less search results in the beginning perhaps, or for whatever reason... )

  • What is the safe way to use fork with Apache::DBI under mod_perl2?

    - by codeholic
    I have a problem when I use Apache::DBI in child processes. The problem is that Apache::DBI provides a single handle for all processes which use it, so I get DBD::mysql::db selectall_arrayref failed: Commands out of sync; you can't run this command now at /usr/local/www/apache22/data/test-fork.cgi line 20. Reconnection doesn't help, since Apache::DBI reconnects in all processes, as I understood the following error The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Error message: DBD driver has not implemented the AutoCommit attribute at /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.9/Apache/DBI.pm line 283. , Here's the origin code: use Data::Dumper 'Dumper'; use DBI (); my $dbh = DBI->connect($dsn, $username, $password, { RaiseError => 1, PrintError => 0, }); my $file = "/tmp/test-fork.tmp"; my $pid = fork; defined $pid or die "fork: $!"; if ($pid) { my $rows = eval { $dbh->selectall_arrayref('SELECT SLEEP(1)') }; print "Content-Type: text/plain\n\n"; print $rows ? "parent: " . Dumper($rows) : $@; } else { my $rows = eval { $dbh->selectall_arrayref('SELECT SLEEP(1)') }; open FH, '>', $file or die "$file: $!"; print FH $rows ? "child: " . Dumper($rows) : $@; close FH; } The code I used for reconnection: ... else { $dbh->disconnect; $dbh = DBI->connect($dsn, $username, $password, $attrs); my $rows = eval { $dbh->selectall_arrayref('SELECT SLEEP(1)') }; open FH, '>', $file or die "$file: $!"; print FH $rows ? "child: " . Dumper($rows) : $@; close FH; } Is there a safe way to use Apache::DBI with forking? Is there a way to make it create a new connection perhaps?

  • How do I create a thread-safe write-once read-many value in Java?

    - by Software Monkey
    This is a problem I encounter frequently in working with more complex systems and which I have never figured out a good way to solve. It usually involves variations on the theme of a shared object whose construction and initialization are necessarily two distinct steps. This is generally because of architectural requirements, similar to applets, so answers that suggest I consolidate construction and initialization are not useful. By way of example, let's say I have a class that is structured to fit into an application framework like so: public class MyClass { private /*ideally-final*/ SomeObject someObject; MyClass() { someObject=null; } public void startup() { someObject=new SomeObject(...arguments from environment which are not available until startup is called...); } public void shutdown() { someObject=null; // this is not necessary, I am just expressing the intended scope of someObject explicitly } } I can't make someObject final since it can't be set until startup() is invoked. But I would really like it to reflect it's write-once semantics and be able to directly access it from multiple threads, preferably avoiding synchronization. The idea being to express and enforce a degree of finalness, I conjecture that I could create a generic container, like so: public class WoRmObject<T> { private T object; WoRmObject() { object=null; } public WoRmObject set(T val) { object=val; return this; } public T get() { return object; } } and then in MyClass, above, do: private final WoRmObject<SomeObject> someObject; MyClass() { someObject=new WoRmObject<SomeObject>(); } public void startup() { someObject.set(SomeObject(...arguments from environment which are not available until startup is called...)); } Which raises some questions for me: Is there a better way, or existing Java object (would have to be available in Java 4)? Is this thread-safe provided that no other thread accesses someObject.get() until after it's set() has been called. The other threads will only invoke methods on MyClass between startup() and shutdown() - the framework guarantees this. Given the completely unsynchronized WoRmObject container, it is ever possible under either JMM to see a value of object which is neither null nor a reference to a SomeObject? In other words, does has the JMM always guaranteed that no thread can observe the memory of an object to be whatever values happened to be on the heap when the object was allocated.

  • Is it possible to make this Flex/Flash application safe?

    - by Frank
    I'm back with another Flex/Flash security question. I've already received some help from the community on this topic, but I'm still not quite sure this is the best way to do. Here's the thing. A flex web app, a lot of users (1000+), custom configuration of the application depending of the user group. Can I make this thing safe... or safer. For the moment, when a user comes to the application, there is only one configuration possible, but for the next version we've implented a multi-configuration protocol, this way : 1. The user connect to Default.aspx, server code process the windows credentials (whe are on intranet) and give the correct xml configuration file. 2. The flex app loads with the xml conf file as a flashvar and then the app 'builds' itself with the content of the xml file. As we know, since this is a flex application the swf is downloaded on the client computer and the xml file too. If more than one user connects to the app, from the same computer, the can possibly see the other xml file in the windows temp folder. The current directory of the application looks that way : Web site |-> default.aspx |-> index.swf |-> configAdmin.xml |-> configUserType1.xml |-> configUserType2.xml |-> com |-> a lot of swf and xml files I was first thinking making another directory (without read access for the client) containing all the configurations xml files, picking the right one, copying it to the client and deleting it afterwards. But it seems like I must let know the user know when downloading/deleting content on it's computer... I'm running out of ideas, so I hope you have some great ones. It's there are some design flaws (in the way the app is build, not in Flash :p) please share. I'm always looking forward to improve. Thanks Update : In browser Flash/Flex (without AIR that is) doesn't allow deleting file localy silently (on the client computer, where the application is). It's also not yet possible to get session data.

  • is this aes encryption wrapper safe ? - yet another take...

    - by user393087
    After taking into accound answers for my questions here and here I created (well may-be) improved version of my wrapper. The key issue was what if an attacker is knowing what is encoded - he might then find the key and encode another messages. So I added XOR before encryption. I also in this version prepend IV to the data as was suggested. sha256 on key is only for making sure the key is as long as needed for the aes alg, but I know that key should not be plain text but calculated with many iterations to prevent dictionary attack function aes192ctr_en($data,$key) { $iv = mcrypt_create_iv(24,MCRYPT_DEV_URANDOM); $xor = mcrypt_create_iv(24,MCRYPT_DEV_URANDOM); $key = hash_hmac('sha256',$key,$iv,true); $data = $xor.((string)$data ^ (string)str_repeat($xor,(strlen($data)/24)+1)); $data = hash('md5',$data,true).$data; return $iv.mcrypt_encrypt('rijndael-192',$key,$data,'ctr',$iv); } function aes192ctr_de($data,$key) { $iv = substr($data,0,24); $data = substr($data,24); $key = hash_hmac('sha256',$key,$iv,true); $data = mcrypt_decrypt('rijndael-192',$key,$data,'ctr',$iv); $md5 = substr($data,0,16); $data = substr($data,16); if (hash('md5',$data,true)!==$md5) return false; $xor = substr($data,0,24); $data = substr($data,24); $data = ((string)$data ^ (string)str_repeat($xor,(strlen($data)/24)+1)); return $data; } $encrypted = aes192ctr_en('secret text','password'); echo $encrypted; echo aes192ctr_de($encrypted,'password'); another question is if ctr mode is ok in this context, would it be better if I use cbc mode ? Again, by safe I mean if an attacter could guess password if he knows exact text that was encrypted and knows above method. I assume random and long password here. Maybe instead of XOR will be safer to random initial data with another run of aes or other simpler alg like TEA or trivium ?

  • Is it thread safe to read a form controls value (but not change it) without using Invoke/BeginInvoke from another thread

    - by goku_da_master
    I know you can read a gui control from a worker thread without using Invoke/BeginInvoke because my app is doing it now. The cross thread exception error is not being thrown and my System.Timers.Timer thread is able to read gui control values just fine (unlike this guy: can a worker thread read a control in the GUI?) Question 1: Given the cardinal rule of threads, should I be using Invoke/BeginInvoke to read form control values? And does this make it more thread-safe? The background to this question stems from a problem my app is having. It seems to randomly corrupt form controls another thread is referencing. (see question 2) Question 2: I have a second thread that needs to update form control values so I Invoke/BeginInvoke to update those values. Well this same thread needs a reference to those controls so it can update them. It holds a list of these controls (say DataGridViewRow objects). Sometimes (not always), the DataGridViewRow reference gets "corrupt". What I mean by corrupt, is the reference is still valid, but some of the DataGridViewRow properties are null (ex: row.Cells). Is this caused by question 1 or can you give me any tips on why this might be happening? Here's some code (the last line has the problem): public partial class MyForm : Form { void Timer_Elapsed(object sender) { // we're on a new thread (this function gets called every few seconds) UpdateUiHelper updateUiHelper = new UpdateUiHelper(this); foreach (DataGridViewRow row in dataGridView1.Rows) { object[] values = GetValuesFromDb(); updateUiHelper.UpdateRowValues(row, values[0]); } // .. do other work here updateUiHelper.UpdateUi(); } } public class UpdateUiHelper { private readonly Form _form; private Dictionary<DataGridViewRow, object> _rows; private delegate void RowDelegate(DataGridViewRow row); private readonly object _lockObject = new object(); public UpdateUiHelper(Form form) { _form = form; _rows = new Dictionary<DataGridViewRow, object>(); } public void UpdateRowValues(DataGridViewRow row, object value) { if (_rows.ContainsKey(row)) _rows[row] = value; else { lock (_lockObject) { _rows.Add(row, value); } } } public void UpdateUi() { foreach (DataGridViewRow row in _rows.Keys) { SetRowValueThreadSafe(row); } } private void SetRowValueThreadSafe(DataGridViewRow row) { if (_form.InvokeRequired) { _form.Invoke(new RowDelegate(SetRowValueThreadSafe), new object[] { row }); return; } // now we're on the UI thread object newValue = _rows[row]; row.Cells[0].Value = newValue; // randomly errors here with NullReferenceException, but row is never null! }

  • Safe, standard way to load images in ListView on a different thread?

    - by Po
    Before making this question, I have searched and read these ones: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/541966/android-how-do-i-do-a-lazy-load-of-images-in-listview http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1409623/android-issue-with-lazy-loading-images-into-a-listview My problem is I have a ListView, where: Each row contains an ImageView, whose content is to be loaded from the internet Each row's view is recycled as in ApiDemo's List14 What I want ultimately: Load images lazily, only when the user scrolls to them Load images on different thread(s) to maintain responsiveness My current approach: In the adapter's getView() method, apart from setting up other child views, I launch a new thread that loads the Bitmap from the internet. When that loading thread finishes, it returns the Bitmap to be set on the ImageView (I do this using AsyncTask or Handler). Because I recycle ImageViews, it may be the case that I first want to set a view with Bitmap#1, then later want to set it to Bitmap#2 when the user scrolls down. Bitmap#1 may happen to take longer than Bitmap#2 to load, so it may end up overwriting Bitmap#2 on the view. I solve this by maintaining a WeakHashMap that remembers the last Bitmap I want to set for that view. Below is somewhat a pseudocode for my current approach. I've ommitted other details like caching, just to keep the thing clear. public class ImageLoader { // keeps track of the last Bitmap we want to set for this ImageView private static final WeakHashMap<ImageView, AsyncTask> assignments = new WeakHashMap<ImageView, AsyncTask>(); /** Asynchronously sets an ImageView to some Bitmap loaded from the internet */ public static void setImageAsync(final ImageView imageView, final String imageUrl) { // cancel whatever previous task AsyncTask oldTask = assignments.get(imageView); if (oldTask != null) { oldTask.cancel(true); } // prepare to launch a new task to load this new image AsyncTask<String, Integer, Bitmap> newTask = new AsyncTask<String, Integer, Bitmap>() { protected void onPreExecute() { // set ImageView to some "loading..." image } protected Bitmap doInBackground(String... urls) { return loadFromInternet(imageUrl); } protected void onPostExecute(Bitmap bitmap) { // set Bitmap if successfully loaded, or an "error" image if (bitmap != null) { imageView.setImageBitmap(bitmap); } else { imageView.setImageResource(R.drawable.error); } } }; newTask.execute(); // mark this as the latest Bitmap we want to set for this ImageView assignments.put(imageView, newTask); } /** returns (Bitmap on success | null on error) */ private Bitmap loadFromInternet(String imageUrl) {} } Problem I still have: what if the Activity gets destroyed while some images are still loading? Is there any risk when the loading thread calls back to the ImageView later, when the Activity is already destroyed? Moreover, AsyncTask has some global thread-pool underneath, so if lengthy tasks are not canceled when they're not needed anymore, I may end up wasting time loading things users don't see. My current design of keeping this thing globally is too ugly, and may eventually cause some leaks that are beyond my understanding. Instead of making ImageLoader a singleton like this, I'm thinking of actually creating separate ImageLoader objects for different Activities, then when an Activity gets destroyed, all its AsyncTask will be canceled. Is this too awkward? Anyway, I wonder if there is a safe and standard way of doing this in Android. In addition, I don't know iPhone but is there a similar problem there and do they have a standard way to do this kind of task? Many thanks.

  • Is it safe to assert a functions return type?

    - by wb
    This question is related to this question. I have several models stored in a collection. I loop through the collection and validate each field. Based on the input, a field can either be successful, have an error or a warning. Is it safe to unit test each decorator and assert that the type of object returned is what you would expect based on the given input? I could perhaps see this being an issue for a language with function return types since my validation function can return one of 3 types. This is the code I'm fiddling with: <!-- #include file = "../lib/Collection.asp" --> <style type="text/css"> td { padding: 4px; } td.error { background: #F00F00; } td.warning { background: #FC0; } </style> <% Class UserModel Private m_Name Private m_Age Private m_Height Public Property Let Name(value) m_Name = value End Property Public Property Get Name() Name = m_Name End Property Public Property Let Age(value) m_Age = value End Property Public Property Get Age() Age = m_Age End Property Public Property Let Height(value) m_Height = value End Property Public Property Get Height() Height = m_Height End Property End Class Class NameValidation Private m_Name Public Function Init(name) m_Name = name End Function Public Function Validate() Dim validationObject If Len(m_Name) < 5 Then Set validationObject = New ValidationError Else Set validationObject = New ValidationSuccess End If validationObject.CellValue = m_Name Set Validate = validationObject End Function End Class Class AgeValidation Private m_Age Public Function Init(age) m_Age = age End Function Public Function Validate() Dim validationObject If m_Age < 18 Then Set validationObject = New ValidationError ElseIf m_Age = 18 Then Set validationObject = New ValidationWarning Else Set validationObject = New ValidationSuccess End If validationObject.CellValue = m_Age Set Validate = validationObject End Function End Class Class HeightValidation Private m_Height Public Function Init(height) m_Height = height End Function Public Function Validate() Dim validationObject If m_Height > 400 Then Set validationObject = New ValidationError ElseIf m_Height = 324 Then Set validationObject = New ValidationWarning Else Set validationObject = New ValidationSuccess End If validationObject.CellValue = m_Height Set Validate = validationObject End Function End Class Class ValidationError Private m_CSSClass Private m_CellValue Public Property Get CSSClass() CSSClass = "error" End Property Public Property Let CellValue(value) m_CellValue = value End Property Public Property Get CellValue() CellValue = m_CellValue End Property End Class Class ValidationWarning Private m_CSSClass Private m_CellValue Public Property Get CSSClass() CSSClass = "warning" End Property Public Property Let CellValue(value) m_CellValue = value End Property Public Property Get CellValue() CellValue = m_CellValue End Property End Class Class ValidationSuccess Private m_CSSClass Private m_CellValue Public Property Get CSSClass() CSSClass = "" End Property Public Property Let CellValue(value) m_CellValue = value End Property Public Property Get CellValue() CellValue = m_CellValue End Property End Class Class ModelValidator Public Function ValidateModel(model) Dim modelValidation : Set modelValidation = New CollectionClass ' Validate name Dim name : Set name = New NameValidation name.Init model.Name modelValidation.Add name ' Validate age Dim age : Set age = New AgeValidation age.Init model.Age modelValidation.Add age ' Validate height Dim height : Set height = New HeightValidation height.Init model.Height modelValidation.Add height Dim validatedProperties : Set validatedProperties = New CollectionClass Dim modelVal For Each modelVal In modelValidation.Items() validatedProperties.Add modelVal.Validate() Next Set ValidateModel = validatedProperties End Function End Class Dim modelCollection : Set modelCollection = New CollectionClass Dim user1 : Set user1 = New UserModel user1.Name = "Mike" user1.Age = 12 user1.Height = 32 modelCollection.Add user1 Dim user2 : Set user2 = New UserModel user2.Name = "Phil" user2.Age = 18 user2.Height = 432 modelCollection.Add user2 Dim user3 : Set user3 = New UserModel user3.Name = "Michele" user3.Age = 32 user3.Height = 324 modelCollection.Add user3 ' Validate all models in the collection Dim modelValue Dim validatedModels : Set validatedModels = New CollectionClass For Each modelValue In modelCollection.Items() Dim objModelValidator : Set objModelValidator = New ModelValidator validatedModels.Add objModelValidator.ValidateModel(modelValue) Next %> <table> <tr> <td>Name</td> <td>Age</td> <td>Height</td> </tr> <% Dim r, c For Each r In validatedModels.Items() %><tr><% For Each c In r.Items() %><td class="<%= c.CSSClass %>"><%= c.CellValue %></td><% Next %></tr><% Next %> </table> Thank you.

  • View Word Definitions in IE 8 with the Define with Bing Accelerator

    - by Asian Angel
    Do you need an easy way to view word definitions while browsing with Internet Explorer? The Define with Bing Accelerator will display definitions in the same (or a new) tab and save you time while browsing. Using Define with Bing The installation consists of two steps. First, click on Add to Internet Explorer to start the process. Next you will be asked to confirm the installation. Once you have clicked Add your new accelerator is ready to use (no browser restart required). Whenever you encounter a word that needs defining highlight it, click on the small blue square, go to All Accelerators, and then Define with Bing. There are two ways to access the definition: Hover your mouse over the Define with Bing text to open a small popup window Click on Define with Bing to open a definition search in a new tab Being able to access a definition or explanation in the same tab will definitely save you time while browsing. In the example shown here you can get an idea of what SCORM means but clicking on the links inside the popup window is not recommended (webpage opens in popup and is not resizable). In the situation shown above it is better to click on Define with Bing and see more information in a new tab. Conclusion The Define with Bing Accelerator can be a very useful time saver while browsing with Internet Explorer. Finding those word definitions will be a much more pleasant experience now. • Microsoft Enterprise Library Caching Application Block not thread safe?!

    - by AlanR
    Good aftenoon, I created a super simple console app to test out the Enterprise Library Caching Application Block, and the behavior is blaffling. I'm hoping I screwed something that's easy to fix in the setup. Have each item expire after 5 seconds for testing purposes. Basic setup -- "every second pick a number between 0 and 2. if the cache doesn't already have it, put it in there -- otherwise just grab it from the cache. Do this inside a LOCK statement to ensure thread safety. APP.CONFIG: <configuration> <configSections> <section name="cachingConfiguration" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.Configuration.CacheManagerSettings, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" /> </configSections> <cachingConfiguration defaultCacheManager="Cache Manager"> <cacheManagers> <add expirationPollFrequencyInSeconds="1" maximumElementsInCacheBeforeScavenging="1000" numberToRemoveWhenScavenging="10" backingStoreName="Null Storage" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.CacheManager, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" name="Cache Manager" /> </cacheManagers> <backingStores> <add encryptionProviderName="" type="Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.BackingStoreImplementations.NullBackingStore, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching, Version=4.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" name="Null Storage" /> </backingStores> </cachingConfiguration> </configuration> C#: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching; using Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Caching.Expirations; namespace ConsoleApplication1 { class Program { public static ICacheManager cache = CacheFactory.GetCacheManager("Cache Manager"); static void Main(string[] args) { while (true) { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); // sleep for one second. var key = new Random().Next(3).ToString(); string value; lock (cache) { if (!cache.Contains(key)) { cache.Add(key, key, CacheItemPriority.Normal, null, new SlidingTime(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5))); } value = (string)cache.GetData(key); } Console.WriteLine("{0} --> '{1}'", key, value); //if (null == value) throw new Exception(); } } } } OUPUT -- How can I prevent the cache to returning nulls? 2 --> '2' 1 --> '1' 2 --> '2' 0 --> '0' 2 --> '2' 0 --> '0' 1 --> '' 0 --> '0' 1 --> '1' 2 --> '' 0 --> '0' 2 --> '2' 0 --> '0' 1 --> '' 2 --> '2' 1 --> '1' Press any key to continue . . .   • Our Look at Opera 10.50 Web Browser

    - by Asian Angel
    Everyone has been talking about the newest version of Opera recently but perhaps you have not looked at it too closely yet. Today we will take a look at 10.50 and let you see what this “new browser” is all about. The New Engines Carakan JavaScript Engine: Runs web applications up to 7 times faster than its predecessor Futhark Vega Graphics Library: Enables super fast and smooth graphics on everything from tab switching to webpage animation Presto 2.5: Provides support for HTML5, CSS2.1 and the latest CSS3 standards A Look at the Features Available If you have installed or used older versions of Opera before then the default look after a clean install will probably seem rather different. The main differences in appearance are mainly located within the “glass border” areas of the browser. The “Speed Dial” setup looks and works just as well as in previous versions. You can set a favorite wallpaper or image as your background and choose the number of “dials” using the “Configure Speed Dial Command”. One of the “standout” differences is the “O Button”. All of the menus have been condensed into this single access point but it only takes a few moments to find what you are looking for. If you have used the style before in earlier versions of Opera some of the items have been moved around. For those who prefer the “Menu Bar” that can be easily restored using the “Show Menu Bar Command”. If desired you can actually “extend” the “Tab Bar” downwards to display thumbnails of your open tabs. Just use your mouse to grab the bottom of the “Tab Bar” and adjust it to suit your personal needs. The only problem with this feature is that it will quickly use up a good sized portion of your available UI and browser window space. The “Password Manager” is ready to access when needed…the background for the button will turn a shiny metallic blue when you open a webpage that you have “Login Information” saved for. One of the new features is a small “Recycle Bin Button” in the upper right corner. Clicking on this will display a list of recently closed tabs letting you have easy access to any tabs that you may have accidentally closed. This is definitely a great feature to have as an easy access button. For those who were used to how the “Zoom Feature” looked before it has a new “look” to it. Instead of the pop-up menu-type listing of “view sizes” present before you now have a slider button that you can use to adjust the zooming level. For our default setup here the “Sidebar Panels” available were: “Bookmarks, Widgets, Unite, Notes, Downloads, History, & Panels”. Additional panels such as “Links, Windows, Search, Info, etc.” are available if you want and/or need them (accessible using the “Panels Plus Sign Button”). The “Opera Link Button” makes it easy for you to synchronize your “Speed Dial, Bookmarks, Personal Bar, Custom Searches, History & Notes”. Note: “Opera Link” requires an account and can be signed up for using the link provided below. Want to share files with your family and friends? “Unite” allows you to do that and more. With “Unite” you can: “Stream Music, Show Photo Galleries, Share Files and/or Folders, & host webpages directly from your browser”. We have a more in-depth look at “Unite” in our article here. Note: Use of “Unite” requires an Opera account. Got a slow internet connection? “Opera Turbo” can help with that by running the web traffic through their “compression servers” to speed up your web browsing. Keep in mind that “Opera Turbo” will not engage if you are accessing a secure website (i.e. your bank’s website) thus preserving your security. Note: “Opera Turbo” can be set up to automatically detect slow internet connections (i.e. crowded Wi-Fi in a cafe). Opera has a built-in “Private Browsing Mode” now for those who prefer anonymous browsing and want to keep the “history records clean” on their computer. To access it go to “Tabs and windows” and select “New private tab” or “New private window” as desired. When you open your new “Private Tab or Window” you will see the following message with details on how Opera will handle browsing information and a large “door hanger symbol”. Notice that the one tab is locked into “Private Browsing Mode” while the others are still working in “Regular Browsing Mode”. Very nice! A miniature version of the “door hanger symbol” will be present on any tab that is locked into “Private Browsing Mode”. If you are using Windows 7 then you will love how things look from your “Taskbar”. Here you can see four very nice looking thumbnails for the tabs that we had open. All that you have to do is click on the desired thumbnail… The “Context Menu” looks just as lovely as the thumbnails and definitely has some terrific functionality built into it. Add Enhanced Aero Capability If you love “Aero” and want more for your new Opera install then we have the perfect theme for you. The theme’s name is Z1-AV69 and once you have downloaded it you will need to place it in the “Skins Subfolder” in Opera’s “Program Files Folder”. Note: For our example we used version 1.10 but version 2.00 is now available (link provided below). Once you have restarted Opera, go to the “O Menu” and select “Appearance”. When the “Appearance Window” opens click on “Z1-Glass Skin” and then click “OK”. All of a sudden you will have more “Aero Goodness” to enjoy. Compare this screenshot with the one at the top of this article…the only part that is not transparent now is the browser window area itself. Want even more “Aero Goodness”? Right click on the “Tab Bar” and set “Tab Bar Placement” to “Left”. Note: You can achieve the same effect by setting the “Tab Bar Placement” to “Right”. With the “Speed Dial” visible you will be able to see your wallpaper with ease. While this is obviously not for everyone it does make for a great visual trick. Portable Versions Perhaps you need this wonderful new version of Opera to go with you wherever you do during the day. Not a problem…just visit the Opera USB website to choose a version that works best for you. You can select from “Zip or Exe” setup files and if needed update an older portable version using a “Zipped Update Files Package”. If you are updating an older version keep in mind that you will need to delete the old “OperaUSB.exe. File” due to changes with the new setup files. During our tests updating older portable versions went well for the most part but we did experience a few “odd UI quirks” here and there…so we recommend setting up a clean install if possible. Conclusion The new 10.50 release is a pleasure to use and is a recommended install for your system. Whether you are considering trying Opera for the first time or have been using it for a bit we think that you will pleased with everything that the 10.50 release has to offer. • Safe non-tamperable URL component in Perl using symmetric encryption?

    - by Randal Schwartz
    OK, I'm probably just having a bad Monday, but I have the following need and I'm seeing lots of partial solutions but I'm sure I'm not the first person to need this, so I'm wondering if I'm missing the obvious. $client has 50 to 500 bytes worth of binary data that must be inserted into the middle of a URL and roundtrip to their customer's browser. Since it's part of the URL, we're up against the 1K "theoretical" limit of a GET URL. Also, $client doesn't want their customer decoding the data, or tampering with it without detection. $client would also prefer not to store anything server-side, so this must be completely standalone. Must be Perl code, and fast, in both encoding and decoding. I think the last step can be base64. But what are the steps for encryption and hashing that make the most sense?

  • [Ruby] Why do I have to URI.encode even safe characters for Net::HTTP requests?

    - by Matthias
    I was trying to send a GET request to Twitter (user ID replaced for privacy reasons) using Net::HTTP: url = URI.parse("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345") resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) this throws an exception in Net::HTTP: NoMethodError: undefined method empty?' for #<URI::HTTP:0x59f5c04> from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:1470:ininitialize' just by coincidence, I stumbled upon a similar code snippet, which used URI.encode prior to URI.parse, so I copied that and tried again: url = URI.parse(URI.encode("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345")) resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) now it works fine, but why? There are no reserved characters that need escaping in the URL I mentioned, so why do I have to call URI.encode for get_response to succeed?

  • What is a good dumbed-down, safe template system for PHP?

    - by Wilhelm
    (Summary: My users need to be able to edit the structure of their dynamically generated web pages without being able to do any damage.) Greetings, ladies and gentlemen. I am currently working on a service where customers from a specific demographic can create a specific type of web site and fill it with their own content. The system is written in PHP. Many of the users of this system wish to edit how their particular web site looks, or, more commonly, have a designer do it for them. Editing the CSS is fine and dandy, but sometimes that's not enough. Sometimes they want to shuffle the entire page structure around by editing the raw HTML of the dynamically created web pages. The templating system used by WordPress is, as far as I can see, perfect for my use. Except for one thing which is critically important. In addition to being able to edit how comments are displayed or where the menu goes, someone editing a template can have that template execute arbitrary PHP code. As the same codebase runs all these different sites, with all content in the same databse, allowing my users to run arbitrary code is clearly out of the question. So what I need, is a dumbed-down, idiot-proof templating system where my users can edit most of the page structure on their own, pulling in the dynamic sections wherever, without being able to even echo 1+1;. Observe the following psuedocode: <!DOCTYPE html> <title><!-- $title --></title> <!-- header() --> <!-- menu() --> <div>Some random custom crap added by the user.</div> <!-- page_content() --> That's the degree of power I'd like to grant my users. They don't need to do their own loops or calculations or anything. Just include my variables and functions and leave the rest to me. I'm sure I'm not the only person on the planet that needs something like this. Do you know of any ready-made templating systems I could use? Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • C# - Which is more efficient and thread safe? static or instant classes?

    - by Soni Ali
    Consider the following two scenarios: //Data Contract public class MyValue { } Scenario 1: Using a static helper class. public class Broker { private string[] _userRoles; public Broker(string[] userRoles) { this._userRoles = userRoles; } public MyValue[] GetValues() { return BrokerHelper.GetValues(this._userRoles); } } static class BrokerHelper { static Dictionary<string, MyValue> _values = new Dictionary<string, MyValue>(); public static MyValue[] GetValues(string[] rolesAllowed) { return FilterForRoles(_values, rolesAllowed); } } Scenario 2: Using an instance class. public class Broker { private BrokerService _service; public Broker(params string[] userRoles) { this._service = new BrokerService(userRoles); } public MyValue[] GetValues() { return _service.GetValues(); } } class BrokerService { private Dictionary<string, MyValue> _values; private string[] _userRoles; public BrokerService(string[] userRoles) { this._userRoles = userRoles; this._values = new Dictionary<string, MyValue>(); } public MyValue[] GetValues() { return FilterForRoles(_values, _userRoles); } } Which of the [Broker] scenarios will scale best if used in a web environment with about 100 different roles and over a thousand users. NOTE: Feel free to sugest any alternative approach.

  • Best open source alternative for MS Visual Source Safe?

    - by afsharm
    We are leaving VSS for TFS or any other alternatives. I'm the one who persists to go for an open source alternative like SVN. Now I'm searching for a good open source Version Control regarding following aspects: We are in love with open source movement and cross-platform. Could it be possible to use it with Mono, SharpDevelop and Express editions of VS instead of Visual Studio itself? What about backup? Is it integrated with VS without serious problems? Any API or command prompt access? Please notice I've read following previous texts about it but still need more help: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/690766/vss-or-svn-for-a-net-project http://stackoverflow.com/questions/61959/tfs-vs-open-source-alternatives http://stackoverflow.com/questions/44588/how-to-convince-a-company-to-switch-their-source-control

  • Is it safe to lock a static variable in a non-static class?

    - by Dario Solera
    I've got a class that manages a shared resource. Now, since access to the resource depends on many parameters, this class is instantiated and disposed several times during the normal execution of the program. The shared resource does not support concurrency, so some kind of locking is needed. The first thing that came into my mind is having a static instance in the class, and acquire locks on it, like this: // This thing is static! static readonly object MyLock = new object(); // This thing is NOT static! MyResource _resource = ...; public DoSomeWork() { lock(MyLock) { _resource.Access(); } } Does that make sense, or would you use another approach?

  • 1 oracle schema support large reques per day , is this safe ?

    - by Hlex
    I 'm java system designer. As we have large project to do tightly, Those projects are java api without webpage. I design to create general flow engine to support all project. This idea use 1 oracle schema , having general transaction table . And others control routing table. They all nearly complete. But DBA Team concern that he is suffered to maintain very large request to 1 schema. 1 reason is if there are problem is some table. He must offline tablespace to fix. This is problem because all project will be affected. I try to convince by split data of each table to partition by project_code & "month number to delete" . Eaxmple partition: PROJ1_05 PROJ1_06 PROJ1_07 PROJ2_05 PROJ2_06 PROJ2_07 and all transaction table will store on its partition. So, If there are problem on any part of tablespace then he should offline some partition and another project with use same table should able to service Transaction per day should around 10Meg Record per day. Is this a good idea? If I must use 1 schema, what is strategy to do? Do you have any comment?
