  • One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great

    - by Jeff Julian
It has been a week since we moved our Geekswithblogs.net System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great.  I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware.  On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers.  I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in.  This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends that we will be announcing shortly.  We will be launching a nice little contest for our bloggers as well. • How often do CPUs make calculation errors?

    - by veryfoolish
In Dijkstra's Notes on Structured Programming he talks a lot about the provability of computer programs as abstract entities. As a corollary, he remarks how testing isn't enough. E.g., he points out the fact that it would be impossible to test a multiplication function f(x,y) = x*y for any large values of x and y across the entire ranges of x and y. My question concerns his misc. remarks on "lousy hardware". I know the essay was written in the 1970s when computer hardware was less reliable, but computers still aren't perfect, so they must make calculation mistakes sometimes. Does anybody know how often this happens or if there are any statistics on this?

  • How to start programming in Windows?

    - by ilhan
I've made simple programs in C and C++ with simple compilers (learned it in university; I'm Statistics student). Also I'm amateur PHP programer. Now I want to start programming for Windows. apps with user interface apps without user interface My aim is just to see how it is done. And I might make a basic app that interacts with a database which is in a web server. Where should I start? Windows Visual Studio? .NET? What should I know?

  • Script to calculate the Median value for SQL Server data

The standard SQL language has a number of aggregate functions like: SUM, MIN, MAX, AVG, but a common statistics function that SQL Server does not have is a built-in aggregate function for median. The median is the value that falls in the middle of a sorted resultset with equal parts that are smaller and equal parts that are greater. Since there is no built-in implementation for the median, the following is a simple solution I put together to find the median. Get smart with SQL Backup ProPowerful centralised management, encryption and more.SQL Backup Pro was the smartest kid at school. Discover why.

  • Google analytics not provided for 55% of total traffic

    - by Neolisk
I've been here and here to learn what (not provided) means. Now the question is if what I am seeing in my Google Analytics stats for my website is considered normal (and whether I can/should do anything about it). Here are the statistics from one day, but other days are similar: 102 visits, 57 is from (not provided), that's over 55% of unknown keywords. Is it normal to have it like that? Does google plan to do anything about it? In other words, what's the perspective? In my understanding, with this approach, as people switch to https, Analytics will stop being useful. Please correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions.

  • Why is Prolog associated with Natural Language Processing?

    - by kyphos
I have recently started learning about NLP with python, and NLP seems to be based mostly on statistics/machine-learning. What does a logic programming language bring to the table with respect to NLP? Is the declarative nature of prolog used to define grammars? Is it used to define associations between words? That is, somehow mine logical relationships between words (this I imagine would be pretty hard to do)? Any examples of what prolog uniquely brings to NLP would be highly appreciated.

  • When/how to use Node with PHP or Ruby [closed]

    - by mbuurman
For fun, I am creating a sort of microblogging webapp where people can comment on certain things. The basic "What is your opinion on this?" should be easy doable with just PHP (input the data in the database). Along with that I want to create a statistics page, also easy doable with PHP. But what if I want to update that page in realtime? How would I integrate Node on that page? Or shouldn't I use Node for that? When would you use Node?

  • Master Data Management - The Trend Towards Multi-Domain and Other Realities

    - by Mala Narasimharajan
In my quest to keep my fingers on the pulse of MDM, I recently found a pretty interesting article.  The article was published in Information Week and provides some interesting statistics from a recent survey conducted by the analyst firm, The Information Difference.  Let's take a look: Of the 130 organizations surveyed, 53% have live operational MDM implementations 81% of those with live operational MDM implementations report broad success - a huge improvement over 2011's 54% 64% developed a business case prior to their MDM deployment, while a daring 32% went ahead without a business case.    The article goes on to talk about the shift in vendors from focusing on customer data and product information management to one that is oriented around multi-domain master data management as well as other realities around MDM.  Take a look at the article. • Tumblr is visiting my blog?

    - by Hermes
I have created a blog on Tumblr a few days ago. Looking over the statistics, it seems that Tumblr itself is visiting my website, using different browsers. What is this supposed to mean? Are these real visitors or is it a Tumblr bot? One example: Browser: Chrome 32.0 OS: Win8 Resolution: 1024x768 Location: New York, United States IP Address: Tumblr (66.6.40.249) Referring URL: (No referring link) Other browsers used include: Chrome 20.0.1090.0 Firefox 21 Opera 12.14 Chrome 15.0.861.0 Chrome 32.0.1667.0 Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer 9 Opera 12 Opera 12.02 They all use the same screen resolution (1024x768) and have no referrer. The flash version is not set, but they do support javascript. Unfortunately, I don't have the full user agent string.

  • nicstat update - version 1.92

    - by user12608033
Another minor nicstat release is now available. Changes for Version 1.92, October 2012 Common Added "-M" option to change throughput statistics to Mbps (Megabits per second). Suggestion from Darren Todd. Fixed bugs with printing extended parseable format (-xp) Fixed man page's description of extended parseable output. Solaris Fixed memory leak associated with g_getif_list Add 2nd argument to dladm_open() for Solaris 11.1 Modify nicstat.sh to handle Solaris 11.1 Linux Modify nicstat.sh to see "x86_64" cputype as "i386". All Linux binaries are built as 32-bit, so we do not need to differentiate these two cpu types. Availability nicstat source and binaries are available from sourceforge. • See how one goal leads to another (i.e., how often downloading the demo leads to purchasing)

    - by s3cur3
I have two goals set up for my site in Google Analytics: one to download the demo of my software, and the other to buy the full version. I'm having trouble getting statistics on how often the download leads to a purchase. This seems like something the multi-channel funnel is perfect for (as in this question)---I expect that it takes multiple visits for the demo download to convert into an order. However, I can't seem to narrow down the multi-channel funnel data into only those that have one goal followed by another. If it matters, I'm tracking the ordering action as a page view (i.e., someone views the "Thanks for ordering" page) and the demo download as an action (which fires when someone clicks the "download" button). Thanks! - Tyler

  • What to use for an event listing site? [on hold]

    - by Vykintas
I have a site which lets users buy & sell tickets, but it's built on wordpress & buddypress. So it's very heavy and messy. I would like to re-do the whole site on something lighter, cleaner and solid. The main functionality for user would have to be as follows: Register or login via Facebook. Create events and sell tickets to them. See ticket sales statistics Upload photos and associate those with events. Buy event tickets, print pdf ticket. Comment, favourite and like events. What would be your suggestions? PHP framework? CMS? CMF? I must say that I'm a front-end dev so building a system from scratch on my own would take a while. I'd be interested more in a "skeleton" app solution or something similar.

  • Advantages of Search Engine-Friendly Websites

For every webmaster, System Engine Optimization or SEO only means one thing - tailoring web content to attract more search engine-driven traffic to his website. The higher the rank of a website in the search engine results, the more traffic it gets. Improving the rank of a website means it will have more chances of being visited by more readers and people who may become potential clients or sources of revenue. Regardless of what services or products may be offered, it is essential for for the site to be search engine-friendly as statistics show over 95% of traffic are driven by search engines.

  • Synthetic database records

    - by michipili
Assume we are getting some statistics from a customer which we analyse and we send our comments to the customer. Now, the customer tells us that the statistic they computed between January and March are based on a wrong methodology and sends us corrected series. We want perform analysis with the wrong and with the correct set of data, which are huge and only differ from January to March. Therefore, we need something like synthetic database records implementing the following logic: synthetic[1] = wrong_data synthetic[2] = correct_data between Januar and March, wrong_data otherwise With this, we can easily perform our analyses on synthetic records. Should such synthetic records be implemented in the application logic or on the side of the database? What are common pitfalls of such an implementation?

  • SSH connection times out

    - by mark
Given: vm - a WinXPsp3 virtual machine hosted by a Win7sp1 physical machine alice is the user on vm srv - a Win2008R2sp1 server bob is the user on srv quake - a linux server mark is the user on quake Both vm and srv have the same new installation of cygwin (1.7.9) and openssh. Firewall service is disabled on vm (and its host) and on srv All the machines can be pinged from all the machines. ssh mark@quake works OK from both vm and srv. ssh bob@srv works OK from both quake and vm. ssh alice@vm works on the vm itself only, but it fails on the other two machines: alice@vm ~ $ ssh alice@vm alice@vm's password: Last login: Tue Oct 25 23:42:09 2011 from vm.shunra.net [mark@Quake ~]$ ssh -vvv alice@vm OpenSSH_4.3p2, OpenSSL 0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 01 Jul 2008 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to vm [172.30.2.60] port 22. debug1: connect to address 172.30.2.60 port 22: Connection timed out ssh: connect to host vm port 22: Connection timed out bob@Srv ~ $ ssh -vvv alice@vm OpenSSH_5.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8r 8 Feb 2011 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to vm [172.30.2.60] port 22. debug1: connect to address 172.30.2.60 port 22: Connection timed out ssh: connect to host vm port 22: Connection timed out I used ssh-host-config both on vm and srv to configure the ssh to run as a windows service. Besides that I did nothing else. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this issue? Thank you very much. EDIT The virtual machine software is VMWare Workstation 7.1.4. I think the problem is in its settings, but I have no idea where exactly. The Network Adapter is set to Bridged. EDIT2 All the machines are located in the company lab, I think all of them are on the same segment, but I may be wrong. Below is the ipconfig /all output for each machine (skipping the linux server). I have deleted the Tunnel adapters to keep the output minimal. If anyone thinks they matter, do tell so and I will post them as well. In addition ping output is given to show that DNS is correct. Something else, may be relevant, may be not. Doing psexec to srv works OK, whereas to vm failes with Access Denied. srv: C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : srv Primary Dns Suffix . . . • How to tune down the Hyperic built-in postgresql database for a small setup

    - by Svish
We are testing out Hyperic 4.5.1 in a quite small environment for now. Currently there are just 1-5 agents and there probably won't be any more than 10-15. When I run ps ax there are 20(!) postgres processes running. For a small setup like this, that can't be necessary, can it? I'm a software developer and don't have much experience with setting up servers and such though, so don't really know. Either way, what settings are appropriate for a small Hyperic setup like this? Current, default and untouched configuration file, hqdb/data/postgresql.conf: # ----------------------------- # PostgreSQL configuration file # ----------------------------- # # This file consists of lines of the form: # # name = value # # (The '=' is optional.) White space may be used. Comments are introduced # with '#' anywhere on a line. The complete list of option names and # allowed values can be found in the PostgreSQL documentation. The # commented-out settings shown in this file represent the default values. # # Please note that re-commenting a setting is NOT sufficient to revert it # to the default value, unless you restart the server. # # Any option can also be given as a command line switch to the server, # e.g., 'postgres -c log_connections=on'. Some options can be changed at # run-time with the 'SET' SQL command. # # This file is read on server startup and when the server receives a # SIGHUP. If you edit the file on a running system, you have to SIGHUP the # server for the changes to take effect, or use "pg_ctl reload". • Unable to receive any emails using postfix, dovecot, mysql, and virtual domain/mailboxes

    - by stkdev248
I have been working on configuring my mail server for the last couple of weeks using postfix, dovecot, and mysql. I have one virtual domain and a few virtual mailboxes. Using squirrelmail I have been able to log into my accounts and send emails out (e.g. I can send to googlemail just fine), however I am not able to receive any emails--not from the outside world nor from within my own network. I am able to telnet in using localhost, my private ip, and my public ip on port 25 without any problems (I've tried it from the server itself and from another computer on my network). This is what I get in my logs when I send an email from my googlemail account to my mail server: mail.log Apr 14 07:36:06 server1 postfix/qmgr[1721]: BE01B520538: from=, size=733, nrcpt=1 (queue active) Apr 14 07:36:06 server1 postfix/pipe[3371]: 78BC0520510: to=, relay=dovecot, delay=45421, delays=45421/0/0/0.13, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure. • CruiseControl.Net Publisher email failing to send e-mail

    - by CrimsonX
So here's my problem: I cannot seem to be able to configure CruiseControl.NET to send out an e-mail to me when a build occurs. I copied the example from the documentation and filled it in with my own values. http://confluence.public.thoughtworks.org/display/CCNET/Email+Publisher Here's the relevant section of ccnet.config below <publishers> <merge> <files> <file>C:\Build\Temp\*.xml</file> </files> </merge> <xmllogger logDir="buildlogs" /> <statistics> <statisticList> <statistic /> </statisticList> </statistics> <email includeDetails="TRUE" mailhostUsername="user" mailhostPassword="password" useSSL="TRUE"> <from>[email protected]</from> <mailhost>mail.mycompanysmtpserver.com</mailhost> <users> <user name="MyName Lastname" group="buildmaster" address="[email protected]" /> </users> <groups> <group name="buildmaster"> <notifications> <notificationType>Always</notificationType> </notifications> </group> </groups> <modifierNotificationTypes> <NotificationType>Failed</NotificationType> <NotificationType>Fixed</NotificationType> </modifierNotificationTypes> <subjectSettings> <subject buildResult="StillBroken" value="Build is still broken for {CCNetProject}" /> </subjectSettings> </email> </publishers> I have had a successful CruiseControl.NET server configured for some time, and it successfully updates people through CCTray, but I need to add e-mail support as well. I've already looked at the relevant StackOverflow articles like this one and many more and tried my hand at googling the solution but I dont know what I could be doing wrong. The only other thing that I'd like to validate is that I can send/receive e-mails using my username/password with the SMTP server I received from IT (my mail works properly) but I just followed the steps on testing an SMTP server here and everything looks fine http://support.microsoft.com/kb/153119 Anyone have any ideas as to why I'm getting this problem, or how to troubleshoot it further?

  • Face Recognition for classifying digital photos?

    - by Jeremy E
I like to mess around with AI and wanted to try my hand at face recognition the first step is to find the faces in the photographs. How is this usually done? Do you use convolution of a sample image/images or statistics based methods? How do you find the bounding box for the face? My goal is to classify the pictures of my kids from all the digital photos. Thanks in advance.

I am using site itjobswatch to estimate $ value of particular IT skills and positions. I am using it also to observe salary trends for them. Sometimes I also use site salary.com where as a kind of hidden-feature one may list really impressing list of different IT positions and see salary statistics for them. What are the other similar sites, especially for markets other than UK and US?
