• Can't get to the login screen

  I upgraded my wife's Windows 7 machine, to Windows 8 Pro, about 10 days ago. She's been using it fine ever since. We typically leave our desktops running 24/7, and just turn off the monitor. This morning she turned the monitor on, and saw the screen with the Seattle Space Needle, and then she pressed the enter key to get to the login screen. Nothing happened. Next she pressed the mouse key. Nothing happened. The mouse moves around fine. But we can't get it past the Seattle Space Needle screen. She replaced the batteries in both her keyboard and mouse recently. So, what's going on? How do we fix it?

• all USB "randomly" disconnect and reconnect

  I'm having a weird issue currently: at seemingly random times(although it seems to happen mostly when USB is used a lot, ie downloading + uploading over my WiFi stick or viewing an HD video from my external hard-drive) all my USB devices disconnect and reconnect after a few seconds. This wouldn't be a HUGE problem if I didn't have to rely on my USB for my internet, because now every time this happens my internet, and with it stuff like remote desktop, crashes. I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit with a Gigabyte 990FXA-D3 motherboard. Now the weird thing: I had the same problem with my previous pc, which had a different motherboard(I think it was an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO). I googled a bit and didn't really find anything about this, only found out I could check if something shows up in the Event Viewer, and I get this error there when the USB crashes: "A timeout occurred while waiting for the EHCI host controller Interrupt on Async Advance Doorbell response." If you require any extra information I'm happy to provide it.

• Customise on screen keyboard

  How would one go about customising the on screen keyboard on a Microsoft Surface Pro? I've noticed that it doesn't have an alt or Esc key and I can't think of any good reason why those keys, among others, should not be there. In particular I want to use keys such as [ and ]. Also there are no up and down arrow keys. I already have a type cover but sometimes I'd like to use those keys without having the type cover attached. Ideally I'd like a way to enable those missing keys and perhaps to remove the ones that I don't want, such as the emoticon key.

• Folder access per user

  I have sbs 2003 r2. I have a shared folder (s-drive) for all shared info for everyone. when user is on shared folder, you see size of folder 230G. I have one user that only sees 1g when on shared folder. I have pcs using XP pro. Have check quota and they say no quota limit checked. I had user use a different pc and still same result. With this I looked at server and users profile and compared with user that did not have problem. could not see anything different. what did I miss in some option or do I have to rebuild user? I have tried google with different terms but have not gotten any good clues

  I'm experiencing some problems when trying to connect my PC to the router through a switch. When the PC is directly connected to the router, everything works fine, Ubuntu (14.04) starts normally, and the Internet connection runs inmediately. With just a few tweaks you can make Live Mail minimize to the system tray just like in earlier versions of Windows. Windows Live Mail in Windows Vista In Windows Vista you could minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray if desired using the context menu… Windows Live Mail in Windows 7 In Windows 7 you can minimize the app window but not hide it in the system tray. The Hide window when minimized menu entry is missing from the context menu and all you have is the window icon taking up space in your taskbar. How to Add the Context Menu Entry Back Right click on the program shortcut(s) and select properties. When the properties window opens click on the compatibility tab and enable the Run this program in compatibility mode for setting. Choose Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down menu and click OK. Once you have restarted Windows Live Mail you will have access to the Hide window when minimized menu entry again. And just like that your taskbar is clear again when Windows Live Mail is minimized. If you have wanted the ability to minimize Windows Live Mail to the system tray in Windows 7 then this little tweak will fix the problem. Building a PC with specific components and installing Mac OS X on it can save you thousands of dollars you might spend on a real Mac. And now, it’s time to step into the portable world. Today we will show how you can turn an HP ProBook (or any compatible Sandy Bridge laptop) into a 95% MacBook Pro! Why should (or shouldn’t) you do it? Let’s clarify whether or not it should be done. Firstly, we all know Apple makes awesome laptops. The design, build quality, and the aesthetics (not to mention, the glowing Apple) would make you crave for one. Secondly, all these Apple laptops are bundled with Mac OS X, which (for some people) is the most user-friendly and annoyance-free operating system. Digital artists, musicians, video editors, they all prefer Mac for a reason. So the verdict is, if hardware design is what you really look for, you should get a real Mac, and we are not at all stopping you from doing so.   If you want to send an email to a contact or several contacts, you might want to keep some of the recipient email addresses private using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) Field. Here’s how to do it in Outlook 2010. It’s not enabled by default, but adding it as a field for all future emails is a simple process. Launch Outlook and under the Home tab click on the New E-mail button. When the new mail window opens click on the Options tab and in the Show Fields column select Bcc. The Bcc field will appear and you can then put the contacts in there who you want to receive the mail secretly or don’t want to show a certain email address.   Emacs is a historic piece of software. It promises outstanding productivity for keyboard wizards that really want to explore it's power. The effective use of the keyboard is key to Emacs productivity, but the keyboard hardware has changed a lot since the old days, so many modern Emacs users are struggling with weird 'Emacs chords' on their Windows/IBM keyboards. If one would design a keyboard that is entirely focused on the needs of Emacs users - how would it look like? I assume the following: the standard keybindings of Emacs are accepted, redefinitions are rare exceptions we are only talking about QWERTY keyboards (including regional variations like QWERTZ) we are only considering users applying the (10 fingers) touch typing system. the question is not only about remapping the keys of existing keyboards (perfectly possible on Linux with .xmodmap and on Windows with keytweak, for example) - think about the perfect keyboard-hardware you would like to see on your desk while hacking in Emacs all day long. Please tag your answer with your locale, i.e. [en] or [de], so that everybody knows what regional layout you are using. I will answer my own question below, to show you the results of some investigation and experimentation, but I really would like to read about different approaches and their pro's and con's. • Super Computer Built from Raspberry Pi Boards and LEGO Bricks

  It was only a matter of time before someone chained together dozens of Raspberry Pi boards into a serviceable super computer; read on to see how a team of Southampton scientists built a 64-core machine using them. From the University of South Hampton press release: Professor Cox comments: “As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.” The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named “Iridis-Pi” after the University’s Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under £2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi). Professor Cox uses the free plug-in ‘Python Tools for Visual Studio’ to develop code for the Raspberry Pi. Then you will definitely want to have a look at Kingsoft Office Suite Free 2012, which you can download as a suite or as individual apps. As soon as the installation has completed you will see this window. All relevant file types are checked by default, but you may deselect any that you do not want associated with Kingsoft Office before clicking Close. Special Note: See further below for additional information about the extra formats (i.e. Office 2007 & 2010) that the suite will open. Here is a quick overall view of what the Writer App window looks like. Each of the three apps in the suite will open with the New Document Pane displayed by default on the right side of the window. A closer view of the upper left corner in Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets… A look at the Start Menu options available… In our tests with the suite it opened up Microsoft Office 2007 & 2010 documents without any problems. Note: You can also see part of the built-in Tab Bar outlined in red in the upper left corner. The only drawback with the free version of the suite is that you are limited to the Classic Style Interface, which may or may not be a problem depending on your preferences.
