  I'm intialising a HashSet like so in my program: Set<String> namesFilter = new HashSet<String>(); Is this functionally any different if I initilise like so? HashSet<String> namesFilter = new HashSet<String>(); I've read this about the collections interface, and I understand interfaces (well, except their use here). I've read this excerpt from Effective Java, and I've read this SO question, but I feel none the wiser. Is there a best practice in Java, and if so, why? My intuition is that it makes casting to a different type of Set easier in my first example. But then again, you'd only be casting to something that was a collection, and you could convert it by re-constructing it.

• MultiCast Messages to multiple clients on the same machine

  Im trying to write a server/service that broadcasts a message on the lan ever second or so, Kind of like a service discovery. The message needs to be received by multiple client programs that could be on the same machine or different machines. But there could be more than one program on each machine running at the same time. Im using delphi7, with indy 9.0.18 where im stuck is if i should be using UDP or IP MultiCast or if its even possible... Ive managed to get it to work with IP Multi Cast with one client per machine, but even after many trys with different bindings.. max/min ports etc, i cant seem to find a solution.

• How can I switch timezones in Perl's Template::Plugin::Date?

  I have a calendar on my website, generated in Perl using Template::Toolkit and Template::Plugin::Date. It highlights the current day. I achieve this by iterating through all the dates (as I print the calendar) and comparing against the current date. Something like this: [% IF cur_date == date.format(format = '%Y-%m-%d') %] ... [% END %] It all works well until someone in Australia looks at it. (They are in a different timezone to me and my server in the UK). What's the best way to get Template::Plugin::Date to use a different time zone? It accepts a 'locale' parameter, but AFAIK this is only used for formatting.

• Dice face value recognition

  I’m trying to build a simple application that will recognize the values of two 6-sided dice. I’m looking for some general pointers, or maybe even an open source project. The two dice will be black and white, with white and black pips respectively. Their distance to the camera will always be the same, but their position on the playing surface will be random. (not the best example, the surface will be a different color and the shadows will be gone) I have no prior experience with developing this kind of recognition software, but I would assume the trick is to first isolate the faces by searching for the square profile with a dominating white or black color (the rest of the image, i.e. the table/playing surface, will in distinctly different colors), and then isolate the pips for the count. Shadows will be eliminated by top down lighting. I’m hoping the described scenario is so simple (read: common) it may even be used as an “introductory exercise” for developers working on OCR technologies or similar computer vision challenges.

  I have a project compiled using __cdecl calling convention (msvc2010) and I compiled boost using the same compiler using the default settings. The project linked with boost but I at runtime I got an assert message like this: File: ...\boost\boost\program_options\detail\parsers.hpp Line: 79 Run-Time Check Failure #0 - The value of ESP was not properly saved across a function call. This is usually a result of calling a function declared with one calling convention with a function pointer declared with a different calling convention. There are the following questions: what calling convention does boost build with by default on Windows (msvc2010) how to I compile boost with __cdecl calling convention why boost wasn't able to prevent linking with code with different calling conventions? I understood that boost has really smart library auto-inclusion code.

• How do I detect the environment in Salesforce?

  I am integrating our back end systems with Salesforce using the web services. I have production and stage environments running on different URLs. I need to be able to have the endpoint of the web service call be different depending on whether the code is running in the production or sandbox Salesforce instance. How do I detect the environment. Currently I am considering looking up a user to see if there user name ends in 'devsandbox' as I have been unable to identify a system object that I can query to get the environment. Further clarification: The location I need to determine this is within the Apex code that is invoked when I select a button in Salesforce. My custom controller needs to know if it running in the production or sandbox Salesforce environment.

• Why can't I set boolean columns with update?

  I'm making a user administration page. For the system I'm creating, users need to be approved. Sometimes, there will be many users to approve, so I'd like to make that easy. I'm storing this as a boolean column called approved. I remembered the Edit Multiple Individually Railscast and thought it would be a great fit. • ZipArchive php Class - Does it support all servers?

  Ok, just wondering on the versions of PHP that this class is built into. And if they are built into all platforms (OS's). I'm wanting an approach to search through a zip file and place files using file_put_contents in different filepaths within the webroot. In any case, I'm familiar with how to do this with the ZipArchive class, but I'm wondering if using this class would be a good solution and support MOST, if not ALL servers?? I mean, I'd rather not use a method that requires the Server to have it installed. I'm looking for a solution to this that will support at least MOST servers without having to install the class... Thanks :) Also, I'd like to support opening tar.gz and/or .tgz files if possible, but I don't think the ZipArchive class supports this, but perhaps a different built-in php class does??

• iTunes Visualization -- What type of code is it written in and what does that code look like?

  Being a web developer, I know how event driven user interfaces are written, but do not have insight into other families of code (embedded software like automotive software, automation software on assembly lines, drivers, or the crawling lower-thirds on CNN, etc.) I was looking at the iTunes visualizer (example) and am curious: What code is used to write the visualizer? Objective C? Does it use Core Animation? What type of abstraction does that library offer? What does the code look like? Is it a list of mathematical equations for producing the crazy graphics? Is it a list of key frames with tweening? Is there an array of images, fractals, worm holes, flowers, sparkles, and some magic mixes them together. Or something totally different? I am not looking for a tutorial, just an understanding of how something very different than web development works. Oh yah, I know iTunes is closed source, so all of this is conjecture.

I could repeat the requisite conversions a dozen times by putting them in each of the callers, but it seems much more efficient to do it once in the called method. public String myMethod(String myArg) { return DoSomething(myArg); } public Int32 myMethod(String myArg) { return Convert.ToInt32(DoSomething(myArg)); } private String DoSomething(key) { return SomeList[key]; } If I have multiple methods that pull data from SomeList and have to utilize different data types then in each I have to do a type conversion. Examples might be session variables or query or form requests or any other number of things.   ...or, how do I filter a sequence of classes by the interfaces they implement? Let's say I have a sequence of objects that inherit from Foo, a seq<#Foo>. In other words, my sequence will contain one or more of four different subclasses of Foo. Each subclass implements a different independent interface that shares nothing with the interfaces implemented by the other subclasses. Now I need to filter this sequence down to only the items that implement a particular interface. 'a as x -> Some(x) | _ -> None) |> Seq.iter dest.Add However, the complier complains about :? 'a - telling me: This runtime coercion or type test from type 'b to 'a involves an indeterminate type based on information prior to this program point. Runtime type tests are not allowed on some types. Further type annotations are needed. I can't figure out what further type annotations to add. There's no relationship between the interface 'a and #Foo except that one or more subclasses of Foo implement that interface. Also, there's no relationship between the different interfaces that can be passed in as 'a except that they are all implemented by subclasses of Foo. I eagerly anticipate smacking myself in the head as soon as one of you kind people points out the obvious thing I've been missing.

  I have a command line that I'm trying to modify to remove some of the arguments. What makes this complex is that I can have nested arguments. Say that I have this: $cmdline = "-a -xyz -a- -b -xyz -b- -a -xyz -a-" I have three different -xyz flags that are to be interpreted in two different contexts. One is the -a context and the other is the -b context. I want to remove the "a" -xyz's but leave the ones in the "b" -xyz. in the above case, I want: -a -a- -b -xyz -b- -a -a- Alternately, if I have: -a -123 -a- -b -xyz -b- -a -xyz -a-" I want: -a -123 -a- -a -xyz -a- -b -xyz -b- -a -a- It's this second case that I'm stuck on. • What is the life cycle of the XNA GraphicsDevice on the Xbox 360?

  I'm working on an XNA project that doesn't use the built-in Game class, mostly for learning purposes (so I can mess with different game loop types, etc). It's only designed for the Xbox 360, because the hardware is consistent and I don't have to worry about compatibility among different PC hardware configurations. So far, it's working well and I can clear the screen to a color, but I'd like to make sure I handle the GraphicsDevice correctly before moving on. What exactly is the life cycle for the GraphicsDevice on the Xbox 360? Is it ever lost or reset automatically? I know that on Windows, it's lost when the window loses focus, but the Xbox obviously doesn't manage focus. It appears to even keep the graphics device when the Guide pops up, which is the closest thing I can find to "losing focus" on the Xbox. I'd like to think it's simply a matter of "fire and forget," which would make a lot of other things much easier (only needing to load content once, for instance). But I want to make sure.

• File version maintainence via PHP FTP?

  Currently I'm working on a "plugin" that will be installed on many different sites and I was wondering on the best way for me to maintain the file version of this "plugin". Here's what I was thinking. Have a "master copy" of the plugin on a server, then connect via FTP to the target sites and upload the copy to their site overwriting whatever files they may have. I was wondering the best way to go about this. The "plugin" will have many different folders and files so transferring one file at a time will be too tedious. Is there a way to copy an entire folder over at a time? Or even better, is there a way to recurse through the folders and checking for file difference before uploading the new file? This is to make sure we are uploading a new file and not just the same one.

  Is there a 3rd party add-on/application or some way to perform object map dumping in script debugger for a JavaScript object? Here is the situation... I have a method being called twice, and during each time something is different. I'm not sure what is different, but something is. So, if I could dump all the properties of window (or at least window.document) into a text editor, I could compare the state between the two calls with a simple file diff. Thoughts?   Does anybody know where I can find documentation on how to write annotation schemas for Callisto? I'm looking to write something a little more complicated than I can generate from a DTD -- that only gives me the ability to tag different kinds of text mentions. I'm looking to create a schema that represents a single type of relationship between five or six different kinds of textual mentions (and some of these types of mentions have attributes that I need to assign values to), and possibly having a second type of relationship between the first two instances of the first type of relationship. (Alternatively, does anybody know of any software that would be better for this kind of schema? I've been looking at WordFreak, but it's a little clumsy, and it doesn't support attributes on its textual mentions.)

  I hope I am not missing something very simple here. I have done a Google search(es) and searched through stackoverflow. Here is the situation: For simplicity's sake let's say I have a table called "PeoplesDocs", in a SQL Server 2008 DB, that holds a bunch of people and all the documents that they own. So one person can have several documents. I also have a table called "RequiredDocs" that simply holds all the documents that a person should have. Here is sort of what it looks like: PeoplesDocs: PersonID DocID -------- ----- 1 A 1 B 1 C 1 D 2 C 2 D 3 A 3 B 3 C RequiredDocs: DocID DocName ----- --------- A DocumentA B DocumentB C DocumentC D DocumentD How do I write a SQL query that returns some variation of: PersonID MissingDocs -------- ----------- 2 DocumentA 2 DocumentB 3 DocumentD I have tried, and most of my searching has pointed to, something like: SELECT DocID FROM DocsRequired WHERE NOT EXIST IN ( SELECT DocID FROM PeoplesDocs) but obviously this will not return anything in this example because everyone has at least one of the documents. Also, if a person does not have any documents then there will be one record in the PeoplesDocs table with the DocID set to NULL. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide, Ben
