• Any thoughts on A/B testing in Django based project?

  We just now started doing the A/B testing for our Django based project. Can I get some information on best practices or useful insights about this A/B testing. Ideally each new testing page will be differentiated with a single parameter(just like Gmail). mysite.com/?ui=2 should give a different page. So for every view I need to write a decorator to load different templates based on the 'ui' parameter value. And I dont want to hard code any template names in decorators. So how would urls.py url pattern will be?

  hi, I want to build a tag cloud like this one in my Flex application. See image: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/72686/tagCloud.png At the moment I have the tags (that are mx.controls.LinkButtons) added at the same position and having different sizes according to values (stored in an ArrayComponent). In my visualization, the orange tags are supposed to be listed vertically in the middle. The gray tags should be at different distances (according to stored numeric values). I want to avoid overlapping and cluttering. How do you suggest to compute x and y of the gray tags taking care about: the distances from orange tags avoid overlapping between them thanks

• Bind Data after TCP receive.

  I have this strange problem all day now. I dunno if you handled something similar. I used two different serializers and now i know its not this problem. Im sending some data over TCP Sockets. Serialize - Send - Deserialize, everything works ok, i can get my objects search through them, use they're properties! But, if e.g receive a BusinessObject[] and convert into List<BusinessObject>, then bind the list in a Control.DataSource = businessObjectList; BOOM! NotSupportedException. Tried it with 3 different controls. Same behaviour. My head is empty of ideas right now!! The Send TCP happens on Desktop Framework, Receive on Compact Framework. But i dont think this has to do with anything. I wish for an explanation on this!

To take an example given a query for ISBN 9785554443331 - it returns "Chemistry the central science 11 edition" : new:$50 used good condition:$35 used poor condition:$20 If the return does not match with our product list an option to "click here to visit our partner" appears and which returns: Atextbook: $10 Btextbook: $10 Ctextbook: $9 Dtextbook: $8.50 I understand that the first search would be done simultaneous on the web and our database to determine whether or not we have the book and the web to get the average of the price of a given list of web site. • Keeping a database structure up to date in a project where code is on subversion?

  I have been working with Subversion for a while now, and it's been incredible for the management of my projects, and even to help managing the deployment to several different servers, but there is just the one thing that still annoys me. Whenever I make any changes to the database structure, I need to update every server manually, I have to keep track of any changes I made, and because some of my servers run branches of the project (modifications that are still being worked on, or were made for different purposes), it's a bit awkward. Until now, I've been using a "database.sql" file, which is a dump of the database structure for a specific revision. But it just seems like such a bad way to manage this. And I was wondering, how does everyone else manage their MySQL databases when they're working on a project and using Subversion?

• Generate colour palette from uploaded image

  Just for fun I've been looking at how to use the GD library to create a colour palette from an image. So far I've used GD to resize a user uploaded image to an appropriate size for displaying on a webpage. Now I'd like to be able to get about five or so different colours from the image that represent the range of colours present in it. Once I've done that I'd like to generate a complementary palette based upon those colours, which I can then use to colour different elements on the page. Any help I can get about how I would find the initial colour palette would be much appreciated!

  Hi all, I have some fairly generic code which uses preprocessor macros to add a certain prefix onto other macros. This is a much simplified example of what happens: #define MY_VAR(x) prefix_##x "prefix_" is actually defined elsewhere, so it will be different each time the file is included. It works well, but now I have some code I would like to skip if one of the tokens doesn't exist, but this doesn't work: #if defined MY_VAR(hello) What I want it to expand to is this: #ifdef prefix_hello But I can't figure out how. I need to use the MY_VAR() macro to do the expansion, so I can't just hardcode the name. (It's actually for some testing code, the same code gets included with a different prefix each time to test a bunch of classes, and I want to skip a couple of tests for a handful of the classes.) Is this possible with the C++ preprocessor?

• About sqlite use.

  Hi, There are some things my application needs to do on first start up(first startup after update) . These actions could be described in a .txt file and then when it is the case read the file and do according to it ,or on the other hand (I lean to use this option) a sqlite database could be used to store the information . The apk file would be shipped with an .txt file/prebuild sql db stored in res/raw or res.asset and then copied into proper space and used. This I have figured out how !, though I'm not sure which option of this two would be the fittest ? One thing that is unclear to me is how could sqlite version mismatch affect me, and if it serious enough to take into consideration ? I 'm using Android api level 4 (Android 1.6) and the future application might be used on several different devices , with different api levels.

And this is where I'm stuck. I haven't yet found an workaround for this in MVVM adoptation for SL (PRISM is so complex for me yet). Different simple HelloWorldMVVM apps don't deal with at all. • Why is Read-Modify-Write necessary for registers on embedded systems?

  I was reading http://embeddedgurus.com/embedded-bridge/2010/03/different-bit-types-in-different-registers/, which said: With read/write bits, firmware sets and clears bits when needed. It typically first reads the register, modifies the desired bit, then writes the modified value back out and I have run into that consrtuct while maintaining some production code coded by old salt embedded guys here. I don't understand why this is necessary. When I want to set/clear a bit, I always just or/nand with a bitmask. To my mind, this solves any threadsafe problems, since I assume setting (either by assignment or oring with a mask) a register only takes one cycle. On the other hand, if you first read the register, then modify, then write, an interrupt happening between the read and write may result in writing an old value to the register. So why read-modify-write? Is it still necessary?

• Using views as a data interface between modules in a database

  Hello, I am working on the database layout of a straighforward small database in Mysql. We want to modularize this system in order to have more flexiblity for different implementations we are going to make. Now, the idea was to have one module in the database (simple a group of tables with constraints between them) pass its data to the next module via views. In this way, changes in one module would not affect the other ones, as we can make sure in the view that the right data is present there at any time, although the underlying structure of tables might be different. The structure of the App handling the database would likewise be modularized. Is this something that is sometimes done? On a technical side, as I understand views can't have primary keys - how would I then adress such a view? What other issues should be considered?

• How to handle multiple delegates

  I've got a view in my app that does pretty much everything, and I like it that way. The problem however is that it's implementing 5 or 6 different delegates, which seems a little bit messy. My question is, does the view controller have to implement all of the delegates? or is there some way I can separate the code out into different files (without having to do a major restructure or rewrite)? • Will SQL Server Partitioning increase performance without changing filegroups

  Scenario I have a 10 million row table. I partition it into 10 partitions, which results in 1 million rows per partition but I do not do anything else (like move the partitions to different file groups or spindles) Will I see a performance increase? Is this in effect like creating 10 smaller tables? If I have queries that perform key lookups or scans, will the performance increase as if they were operating against a much smaller table? I'm trying to understand how partitioning is different from just having a well indexed table, and where it can be used to improve performance. Would a better scenario be to move the old data (using partition switching) out of the primary table to a read only archive table? Is having a table with a 1 million row partition and a 9 million row partition analagous (performance wise) to moving the 9 million rows to another table and leaving only 1 million rows in the original table?

• SVN Best practice for a "branch" of your main product ?

  At my job we develop websites - however now we're going to make a "whitelabelled" version of a site, which basically means it's the same site, however with a different logo and hosted on a different domain. Also it'll have minor graphical differences, but overall the engine is the same. My initial thought for keeping this in SVN, was to just make a branch for it - however I'm not quite certain if this could give me trouble later on. Normally I keep my branches somewhat short lived - mainly used for developing a new feature, without disturbing trunk. We need to be able to merge trunk changes into this "whitelabel" version, which I why I thought about branching it in the first place. So what's the best way to archive this ?

  I, like many others, love Eclipse as my ide of choice, and because of the way I work (moving about, different places, different projects) want to use Git for CVS. There is a plugin for Git in Eclipse, Egit, which is now an official Eclipse project, and currently at version 0.7.1. As I've just started using it I'm interested in how others are using it, and what work arounds they are using. Currently Egit doesn't have support for merges, so these have to be done outside of Eclipse and then the workspace refreshed. So, How do you do this task ? • readobject method throws ClassNotFoundException

  Hi all, I'm trying to pick up Java and wanted to test around with Java's client/server to make the client send a simple object of a self defined class(Message) over to the server. The problem was that I kept getting a ClassNotFoundException on the server side. I think the rest of the codes seem to be alright because other objects such as String can go through without problems. I had two different netbeans projects in different locations for client and server each. Each of them have their own copy of Message class under their respective packages. Message class implements Serializable. On the client side, I attempt to send a Message object through. On the server side, upon calling the readObject method, it seems to be finding Message class from the client's package instead of it's own. printStackTrace showed: "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: client.Message" on the server side I have not even tried to cast or store the object received yet. Is there something I left out?

• WCF Business logic handling

  I have a WCF service that supports about 10 contracts, we have been supporting a client with all the business rules specific to this client now we have another client who will be using the exact same contracts (so we cannot change that) they will be calling the service exactly the same way the previous client called now the only way we can differentiate between the two clients is by one of the input parameters. Based on this input parameter we have to use a slightly different business logic – the logic for both the Client will be same 50% of the time the remainder will have different logic (across Business / DAL layers) . I don’t want to use if else statement in each of contract implementation to differentiate and reroute the logic also what if another client comes in. Is there a clean way of handling a situation like this. I am using framework 3.5. Like I said I cannot change any of the contracts (service / data contract ) or the current service calling infrastructure for the new client. Thanks

  I'm writing a proxy using .NET and C#. I haven't done much Socket programming, and I am not sure the best way to go about it. What would be the best way to implement this? Should I use Synchronous Sockets, Asynchronous sockets? Please help! It must... Accept Connections from the client on two different ports, and be able to receive data on both ports at the same time. Connect to the server on two different ports, and be able to send data on both ports as the same time. Immediately connect to the server and start forwarding packets as soon as a client connection is made. Forward packets in the same order they were received. Be as low latency as possible. I don't need the ability for multiple clients to connect to the proxy, but it would be a nice feature if its easy to implement. • Predefined column names in SQL Server pivot table

  Hi, the other day I opened a topic here in StackOverflow (stackoverflow.com/questions/4663698/how-can-i-display-a-consolidated-version-of-my-sql-server-table). At that time I needed help on how to show data on a pivot table. From the help I got here in the forum, my research led me to this page about dynamic SQL: www.sommarskog.se/dynamic_sql.html. And then it led me to this awesome SQL script by Itzik Ben-Gan that will create a stored procedure that outputs a pivot table exactly the way I want: sommarskog.se/pivot_sp.sp. Well, almost. I need one change in this stored procedure. Instead of having dynamic column names pulled from the @on_cols variable in the SPROC, I need the output table to hold generic column names in simple ASC order. Could be, for example, col1, col2, col3, col4 ... The dynamic column names are a problem for me. So I need them named by their index in the order they appear. I have tried all sorts of things changing this great SQL script, but it won't work. I did not paste the code from the author because it is too long, but the link above will get us there. • How to debug CSS/Javascript hover issues

  I often find myself wanting to debug CSS layout issues that involve DOM changes caused by Javascript in reaction to a hover event or different CSS rules applying due to the :hover selector. Normally, I'd use Firebug to inspect the element that's giving me trouble and see what its CSS properties were, and where those properties come from. However, when hovering is involved, it becomes impossible, because as soon as you move your mouse down to the Firebug panel, the elements you're interested in are no longer hovered, the CSS rules that apply are different, and (in the case of JS hovers) the DOM is changed. Is there any way I can "freeze" the state of the DOM and application of :hover in order to inspect the DOM as it was during a hover event? Any other ideas on how to debug this sort of issue are welcome, of course.
