• I can't find Terminal Services Manager

  I am obviously stupid... because I'm logged into this Windows 2003 Server box as administrator, yet when I go under Administrative Tools, I can't find "Terminal Services Manager". Terminal Services are installed... I'm using them right now... and I know that's where the manager is supposed to be... yet it is not what am I missing? why isn't it showing? where else can I find it?

• How to partition hard drive that has no os installed?

  I have 500 GB hard drive. The laptop came with windows 7 pre installed in it. Now as I am installing Windows 8, I have deleted the C drive. So I have 460 GB free unused space where I can install Windows 8. But the Windows 8 installer does not give me any option to partition the 460 GB. The only option available are "Refresh" and "Load driver" or just selecting the 460 GB HDD and installing Windows 8 in it. So how can I partition this 460 GB before I install Windows 8 in it? Edit: Can you suggest me some tools that partition the hard drive and RUN independently (as I do not have any OS installed) from a USB ?

What I am looking at is there any tool which will help me in binding all these documents so that I may be able to virtually bind all these documents of a particular client. • Any program or editor in windows 7 to run ".md" files

  I understand that '.md' is an extension for markdown format. While installing 'Grunt' from GitHub I see a lot of .md extension files inside node_module/grunt/docs folder. As per my understanding these files are supported by GitHub for documentation kind of things if I am not wrong. My question here is - Are there any editors/tools or programs available for Windows 7 where I can see these .md files executing ? When I try to open any of these file inside my text editor it displays in raw format with all '#" etc. keywords. I want to see the formatted version of these files so that without an internet connection also I can navigate the documentation on my machine. Thanks for helping !!

• f12 and ctrl + f5 not working correctly

  When I came back to my work computer after being away for a week I found out when I try to clear the cache and refresh the page via ctrl + f5 (or just f5) I get the prompt "Type the Internet address of a document, and Internet Explorer will open it for you" with a drop down list in IE. When I try f5 in Chrome and FF it opens the "Open file" dialog box. When I try to f12 for Dev tools in IE, Chrome & FF it opens up the print dialog box. Why is this happening and what can I do to revert it back to the way it was?

• Concurrent modification during backup: rsync vs dump vs tar vs ?

  I have a Linux log server where multiple applications write data. Data is written in bursts, and in a lot of different files. I need to make a backup of this mess, preferably preserving as much coherence between the file versions as possible and avoiding getting truncated files. Total amount of data on the server is about 100Gb. What I really would want (but can't) is to shut-down, backup the system cold and then start it up again. What kind of guarantees against concurrent modification does the various backup tools give? When do they "freeze" the file versions? I am looking at rsync, dump and tar at the moment, but I am open for other (open source) alternatives. Changing the application or blocking writing for backups is sadly not an option. System is not running LVM (yet), but I have considered that for rebuilding the system and then snapshots.

• What's more cost effective, Hosting your web startup on Foss or Windows?

  Hi, Not coming from the windows world, I'm confused about licensing. I think my knowledge may be out of date. Before we gave up with windows web servers (IIS 2), we used to have to pay Client Access licence's. This worked out quite expensive. Is it cheaper to host 1000's of users on Windows than use Free open source software tools? http://serverfault.com/questions/124329/network-load-balancing-efficience-and-limits. This post suggests I can pay $15 a month, for unlimited users. I certainly hope that this is unbiased view, I am a professional and use the right technology for the right job. I hope i am not feeling the wrath of a windows (or linux for that matter) fanboy. Perhaps a Microsoft certified Licensing person can clear this up. Should i be recommending to startups windows servers and products over lamp? Cheers!

• Need disc image help pronto!

  I recently got a job as a junior network administrator. Last week the senior admins did their yearly reinstall of server 2003, exchange, drivers etc on the main server. I've been asked to back up the disc so that next year they can just copy over the pre-made image. What tools can i use to achieve both the creation of the entire servers HDD image and loading it back on (id like to test it in the sandbox.) To impress them, a program that is free is preferable. And maybe a tool that can do it all from booting the program off of a USB drive.

• Need help identiying a nasty rootkit in Windows

  I have a nasty rootkit that not tools seem to be able to idenity. I know for sure it's a rootkit, but I can figure out which rootkit it is. Here's what I gathered so far: It creates multiple copies of itself in %HOME%\Local Settings\Temp with names like Q.EXE, IAJARZ.exe, etc., and install them as hidden services. These EXE have SysInternals identifiers in them so they're definitely rootkits. It hooked very deep in the system, including file read/write, security policies, registry read/write, and possibly WinSock/TCP/IP. When going to Sophos.com to download their software, the rootkit inject something called Microsoft Ajax Tootkit into the page, which injects code into the email submission form in order to redirect it. (EDIT: I might have panicked. Looks like Sophos does use an AJAZ email form, their form is just broken on Chrome so it looked like a mail form injection attack, the link is http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool/download.aspx ) Super-Antispyware found a lot of spyware cookies, in the name of .kaspersky.2o7.net, etc. (just chedk 2o7.net, looks like it's a legit ad company) I tried comparing DNS lookup from the infected systems and from system in other physical locations, no DNS redirections it seems. I used dd to copy the MBR and compared it with the MBR provided by ms-sys package, no differences so it's not infecting MBR. No antivirus or rootkit scanner be able to identify it. Most of them can't even find it. I tried scanning, in-situ (normal mode), in safe mode, and boot to linux live CD. Scanners used: Avast, Sophos anti rootkit, Kasersky TDSSKiller, GMER, RootkitRevealer, and many others. Kaspersky reported some unsigned system files that ought to be signed (e.g. tcpip.sys), and reported a number of MD5 mismatches. But otherwise couldn't identify anything based on signature. When running Sysinternal RootkitRevealer and Sophos AntiRootkit, CPU usage goes up to 100% and gets stucked. The Rootkit is blocking them. When trying running/installing HiJackThis, RootkitRevealer and some other scanners, it tells me system security policy prevent running/installing it. The list of malicious acitivities go on and on. here's a sample of logs from all my scans. In particular, aswSnx.SYS, apnenfno.sys and PROCMON20.SYS has a huge number of hooks. It's hard to tell if the rootkit replaced legit program files like aswSnx.SYS (from Avast) and PROCMON20.SYS (from Sysinternal Process Monitor). I can't find whether apnenfno.sys is from a legit program. Help to identify it is appreciated. • Using Gentoo's `ebegin`, `eend` etc under Ubuntu

  We're quite fond of the style of the ebegin, eend, eerror, eindent etc commands used by Portage and other tools on Gentoo. The green-yellow-red bullets and standard layout make for very quick spotting of errors, on what would otherwise be very grey command line output. #!/bin/sh source /etc/init.d/functions.sh ebegin "Copying data" rsync .... eend $? Producing output similar to: * Copying data... [ OK ] As a result we're using these commands in some of our common shell scripts, which is a problem for the people using Ubuntu and other linuxes. (linuces? linuxen? linucae? other distros) On Gentoo these functions are provided by OpenRC, and imported with functions.sh file (whose exact position seems to vary slightly). But is there a simple way of getting these commands on Ubuntu? In theory we could replace them all with dull echos, but we'd rather not?

• What are the mandatory Linux kernel modules to run inside of ESXi

  I'm used to rolling my own kernels for servers, as it nicely minimizes the number of exploits (and the resulting patches) to take care of. In a traditional (bare metal) world, the whole process is about knowing what you have (hardware), and what you need (Ethernet, IPv4, iptables, etc.) In a virtualized environment, some things stay the same (still need Ethernet and IPv4), some things go away (power management), and then there are some new needs (vxnet3, or vmware-tools, even though that's compiled outside of the kernel). So my question mostly concerns itself with the last two categories: what can I remove completely, and what new stuff do I want? For example, what IO scheduler do I want, if all my disk operations are going through another filesystem/scheduler/cache to get to the virtual disk? Do I need hyper-threading enabled, or is the VM going to show them to me anyway as a CPU anyway? Do I need Large Receive Offload turned on, or is that something that the hypervisor's network drivers are going to do for me?

• Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 permissions: Users can't write despite being administrators

  We just set up a new R2 server and created a bunch of local user accounts on it that are part of the administrator's group. We then set permissions on some shares and folders to allow FULL CONTROL to anyone from the administrator's group. However, the users cannot write to these folders when logged on. On some folders on the C:\ they are prompted for consent in order to gain permission to read them. Any ideas? Are there any tools that would help me troubleshoot this? • Public IP shows strange characters and Facebook registers logged-in session to a different location

  I'm encountering some IP strangeness today and hoping to find an explanation. In short, I'm based in Seattle, WA with my ISP being Comcast. While browsing Facebook's account settings, I noticed that my active session was located to Mount Laurel, NJ. At that point I ran a search in Google for 'my public IP', which returned an interesting result: a string of characters in the following format: 2601:8:b000:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx Normally, a search for my IP returns something like: 67.xxx.xx.xxx A phone call to Comcast got me nowhere, but using Comcast's phone-menu debugging tools, I was able to send a 'refresh signal' to my modem. After that, the search for 'my public IP' yielded the expected result... for about 5 minutes, and then it returned to the new string of characters. Does anyone know of an explanation for this?

• Internet explorer crashes in VM Player

  My internet explorer is hanging whenever I open it, and all the buttons under Tools menu got disabled. and it always says Connecting... but it will never connects. So I debugged and came to know that IE is opening on some user on VMPlayer not as the user logged in, in my case Administrator. When I open it as 'Run as administrator' it opens fine. By the way I logged into my system as administrator not as a normal user, but still it opens with some other user. Can some one solve this issue. Thanks

  I investigated a couple of tools but they were really annoying and not polished. kSar for exampe is supposed to graph sar output, but it doesn't work. There's a perl script around (sar2rrd) that's supposed to convert sar output in rrd format and generate graphs. Doesn't work. (at least it doesn't like the output of "atsar" as per debian/ubuntu package). Tried munin but it wants to mess with http servers, and for some reason it didn't really work, too. It displayed errors in the webpage generated by the http server it put on port 4949. So, is there a simple install and forget tool to generate daily load,cpu,memory,network graphs? It seems strange to me that this problem has not been solved, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places

• ESXi Static IP setup with gateway on different subnet

  I've got an ESXi server that I'm trying to assign a static IP to. I'm having trouble setting the gateway because (I presume) the gateway is on a different subnet. I've been able to accomplish this task on normal Linux servers by doing the following: route add 172.50.99.254 eth0 route add -net default gw 172.50.99.254 eth0 Now using the GUI config tools for ESXi I've tried setting the following IP: 172.50.5.151 Netmask: 255.255.252.0 Gateway: 172.50.99.254 The gateway does not stick, and when I try to add the gateway manually using esxcfg-route it says it has no route to the gateway IP. How can I get this static IP set correctly? (I don't have any control over the network setup).

• broken partition possible for recovery?

  I was using copywipe on hirens boot cd to copy a Windows installation to a new drive. unfortunately for me, I was rushing, I set the source drive as the USB drive running hiren/copywipe to the Windows partition, I think it has destroyed the partition tables and replaced with hiren boot USB ones. disk: was NTFS 40 / 250 partitions disk: now FAT32 145 / 145 partition I have used several partition recovery tools, diskdigger to name one, they all show a recovered partition, but its the hiren stuff. any advice would be a fantastic help To all that have similar issues I recommend using TestDisk (undelete partition) software. you can get this software as part of hirens boot cd. see answer

• Gmail for Googleapps mail delivery issues

  I have a google apps domain running gmail. One of the owners of one of the email accounts is complaining that some emails don't get delivered to him. I sent him an email that did not get to its destination on one hand but I got no NDR on the other hand. I have already checked that the email was not on in his spam folder. The only thing that he has there is a forwarding rule that is also set up to leave the original in place. I am looking for any tools or ideas on how to debug this.

• Loading guest OS's (Windows) localhost through my host's (Mountain Lion) browsers

  For work, I have to develop in Visual Studio, which I run via VMware's fusion 5. I really want to test via my mac's native browsers for a multitude of reasons. that is, view the IIs web stuffs that my windows VM should expose, in my mac's own native Firefox, Chrome... etc. if i could expose a pretty url, that would be even better, but i would certainly settle for an ugly IP :) I got a decent number of views but no response when I asked in VMware's own boards. Everyone seems to want to go the other direction (developing in sublimetext/textmate serving up through MAMP and exposing it to windows browsers to test) and there seems to be tried a true solutions for this. unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your preference) my startup is pretty entrenched in the visual studio development tools. I'm really hoping that someone knows the answer to this. Thanks :)

• Convert Public Folders to a PST

  Alrighty so I've got a tricky one. I currently have a public folder database (edb & stm) residing on an Exchange 2003 folder. I need to export them into a pst file or otherwise make it so that I can manually get the data in it to end-users. I can not use the export feature built into Outlook as some of the folder refer to another server which doen't have the data. Trying only results in the Outlook Client hanging for close to an hour before giving an error about not finding the data. So this will need to be a server side export. There are a few tools out there that seem to be available for converting edb & stm files to psts but they are quite expensive. Does anybody have any ideas?
