• Attributes passed to .build() dont show up in the query

  Hi there guys! Hope your all enjoying your hollydays. Ive run into a pretty funny problem when trying to insert rows into a really really simple database table. The basic idea is pretty simple. The user selects one/multiple users in a multiselect which are supposed to be added to a group. This piece of code will insert a row into the user_group_relationships table, but the users id always @group = Group.find(params[:group_id]) params[:newMember][:users].each do |uid| # For debugging purposes. puts 'Uid:'+uid @rel = @group.user_group_relationships.build( :user_id => uid.to_i ) @rel.save end The user id always gets inserted as null even though it is clearly there. You can see the uid in this example is 5, so it should work. Uid:5 ... SQL (0.3ms) INSERT INTO "user_group_relationships" ("created_at", "group_id", "updated_at", "user_id") VALUES ('2010-12-27 14:03:24.331303', 2, '2010-12-27 14:03:24.331303', NULL) Any ideas why this fails?

• Hibernate Many-To-One Foreign Key Default 0

  I have a table where the the parent object has an optional many-to-one relationship. The problem is that the table is setup to default the fkey column to 0. When selecting, using fetch="join", etc-- the default of 0 on the fkey is being used to try over and over to select from another table for the ID 0. Of course this doesn't exist, but how can I tell Hibernate to treat a value of 0 to be the same as NULL-- to not cycle through 20+ times in fetching a relationship which doesn't exist? <many-to-one name="device" lazy="false" class="Device" not-null="true" access="field" cascade="none" not-found="ignore"> <column name="DEVICEID" default="0" not-null="false"/>

• Node.js Cron Job Messing with Date Object

  I'm trying to schedule several cron jobs to generate serial numbers for different entities within my web app. However I am running into this problem, when I'm looping each table, it says it has something to do with date.js. I'm not doing anything with a date object ? Not at this stage anyway. A couple of guesses is that the cron object is doing a date thing in its code and is referencing date.js. • How can unit testing make parameter validation redundant?

  We have a convention to validate all parameters of constructors and public functions/methods. For mandatory parameters of reference type, we mainly check for non-null and that's the chief validation in constructors, where we set up mandatory dependencies of the type. The number one reason why we do this is to catch that error early and not get a null reference exception a few hours down the line without knowing where or when the faulty parameter was introduced. As we start transitioning to more and more TDD, some team members feel the validation is redundant. Uncle Bob, who is a vocal advocate of TDD, strongly advices against doing parameter validation. His main argument seems to be "I have a suite of unit tests that makes sure everything works". But I can for the life of it just not see in what way unit tests can prevent our developers from calling these methods with bad parameters in production code. Please, unit testers out there, if you could explain this to me in a rational way with concrete examples, I'd be more than happy to seize this parameter validation!

• PHP mysql_real_escape_string() returning `NULL`

  I'm using PHP Version 5.1.6 and trying to escape a query string from my $_GET array. However my script is returning a NULL after it's escaped. It seems that mysql_escape_string() works fine, but it's deprecated, so I don't want to use it. Having checked over the phpinfo() the MySQL lib is all loaded fine from what I can see. Has anyone experienced this kind of thing before? $term = $_GET['q']; var_dump($term); // string(7) "richard" echo "<br />"; $sterm = mysql_real_escape_string($term, $db); var_dump($sterm); // NULL It's very strange to me, I can't imagine why this function wouldn't work.

  Hello, The question Is it possible to ask SSIS to cast a value and return NULL in case the cast is not allowed instead of throwing an error ? My environment I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. The general context Just in case you're curious, here is my use case. I have to store data coming from somewhere in a generic table (key/value structure with history) witch contains some sort of value that can be strings, numbers or dates. The structure is something like this : table Values { Id int, Date datetime, -- for history Key nvarchar(50) not null, Value nvarchar(50), DateValue datetime, NumberValue numeric(19,9) } I want to put the raw value in the Value column and try to put the same value in the DateValue column when i'm able to cast it to Datetime in the NumberValue column when i'm able to cast it to a number Those two typed columns would make all sort of aggregation and manipulation much easier and faster later.   I am pretty new in SQL so this may be a stupid question... I have a form in PHP which fills in few fields in my SQL table. I have this code: $sql="INSERT INTO $tbl_name (app_name, app_path, short_desc, full_desc) VALUES ('$_POST[app_name]', '$_POST[app_path]', '$_POST[short_desc]', '$_POST[full_desc]')"; But even app_name and app_path are NOT NULL columns, the query can be executed if there is no text in these fields in the form. So, my question is: How to stop the execution of the query if there is no text in the NOT NULL fields ?

  Hello, I have a problem when upgrading a django and mysql app with south. I've tried to make a sql-based upgrade with the code generated by the django sqlall command and I have a similar problem.   I have a view that contains a calculated column. Is there are a way to cast it as a CHAR or VARCHAR rather than a VARBINARY ? Obviously, I have tried using CAST(... as CHAR) but it gives an error. • How to generate `AllowDeactivateGrabs` in command line ?

  I am using XFCE-Ubuntu and do a lot of my development work there. In my case, when I sometimes use Xilinx ISE, the mouse cursor hangs as a Grab pointer and then stops responding. The entire X environment becomes unusable and I have to kill it and restart. This is becoming a serious annoyance. I saw this bug: AllowDeactivateGrabs is broken I see that sending AllowDeactivateGrabs in command line can kill the Grab. In my case, I am doing this on a remote server, so it is the application in the remote server (over X2GO) getting messed up. I am able to login in command line and kill X. Is there a way to generate AllowDeactivateGrabs in command line ? So I dont mess up my other applications and potentially lose data.

  I'm getting some weird behavior in asp.net MVC2 (at least it's not what I'm expecting). I have a controller httppost action that processes credit cards. I'm setting a session variable on the server to let me know if a user has attempted to process a card. I clear that session variable when I'm done. I am doing some very quick posts to test the process and the session variable is coming back null everytime because I clear the session variable at the end of the process. I have some debug prints that show me that the all requests are processed synchronously. That is...the first attempt occurs, it fails, session variable is cleared, second attempt tries and fails and the variable is cleared, etc... My first thought was that this was a side effect of debugging and that it just lined requests up for debugging purposes using the local webserver. So I put it on a development server and the same thing is occurring. Multiple submits/posts are processed synchronously. I even put a System.Threading.Sleep in there to make sure it would stop right after I set the session variable and it still won't even START the second request until the first is done. Has anyone else seen this behavior? My understanding was that a worker process was spawned for each request and that these actions could happen asychronously. Here's some psuedo code if (Session["CardCharged"] != null) return RedirectToAction("Index", "Problem"); Session["CardCharged"] = false; //starting the process System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000); //charge card here if (!providerResponse.IsApproved) { System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("failed"); Session["CardCharged"] = null; //have to allow them to charge again since this failed return View(myModel); } Session["CardCharged"] = true; return RedirectToAction("Index", "OrderComplete"); I should mention that my code ALWAYS fails the credit card check for testing purposes. I'm trying to test the situation where processing is STILL occurring and redirect the user elsewhere. I have set a dummy session variable elsewhere to assure that the session id "sticks". ' else '' end + ltrim(rtrim(c.LastName)) as ClientName, a.MISCode, b.Address, b.City, dbo.ClientGetEnrolledPrograms(CONVERT(int,a.ClientID)) as Abbreviation FROM ClientDetail a JOIN Address b on(a.PersonID = b.PersonID) JOIN Person c on(a.PersonID = c.PersonID) LEFT JOIN ProgramEnrollments d on(d.ClientID = a.ClientID and d.Status = 'Enrolled' and d.HistoricalPKID is null) LEFT JOIN Program e on(d.ProgramID = e.ProgramID and e.HistoricalPKID is null) WHERE a.MichiganWorksData=1 I've isolated the issue to the ProgramEnrollments table. This table holds one-to-many relationships where each ClientID can be enrolled in many programs. So for each program a client is enrolled in, there is a record in the table. The final result set is therefore returning a row for each row in the ProgramEnrollments table based on these joins. I presume my join is the issue but I don't see the problem. Thoughts/Suggestions? If I use update table command, it will insert null for all the rows which don't have that column. This is same as relational DB. For example, for contact column family, I have name, phone, email. I have 100 contacts have all 3 field. Then number 101 contact has skype id which I want to add. If I use insert statement, it won't let me add skypeid since it's not defined in the CF. So I have to run alter statement to change the CF, then all the first 100 contacts will have a null field for each of them.

• json data not rendered in backbone view
