  • Windows programs to create timeline charts?

    I would like to create a chart for my source control depicting the trunk and all the branches, with various details, like creation date, merge date, created revision, merge revision, close revision etc. I want it to look like this: I have looked into an appliation called SmartDraw, but unable to the required kind of output from it. It would be awesome if the data can be generated by reading an Excel file input. It would be required that the software runs on Windows XP SP3.

    A while back, I came across a random password generator for the command line that displayed a grid of "memorable" passwords. Output was something like this: adam@host:~$ CantRememberThisCommand lkajsdf aksjdfl kqwrupo qwerpoi qwerklw zxlkelq The idea was that you could run this utility while someone was looking over your shoulder, and still pick a password with some level of secrecy due to the large number of choices. I cannot remember what this utility was called. Oh interwebs, can you help?

  • joining text files with 600M+ lines

    I have two files huge.txt and small.txt. Huge has around 600M rows and it's 14Gigs, each line has four space separated words (tokens) and finally another space separated column with a number. Small has 150K rows with a size of ~3M, a space separated word and a number. Both Files are sorted using the sort command, with no extra options. The words in both files may include apostrophes (') and dashes (-). The deisred output would contain all columns from the huge.txt and the second column (the number) from small txt where the first word of huge.txt and the first word of small.txt match. My attemtpts below failed miserably with the following error: cat huge.txt|join -o 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.2 - small.txt > output.txt join: memory exhausted What I suspect is that the sorting order isn't right somehow even though the files are pre-sorted using: sort -k1 huge.unsorted.txt > huge.txt sort -k1 small.unsorted.txt > small.txt Problems seem to appear around words that have apostrophes (') or dashes (-). I also tried dictinoary sorting using the -d option bumping into the same error at the end. I see two ways out of this but don't know how to implement any of them. 1) Any tips how to sort the files in a way that the join command considers them to be sorted properly? 2) I was thinking of calculating MD5 or some other hashes of the strings to get rid of the apostrophes and dashes, and do the sorting and joining with the hashes instead of the strings themselves an dat the "translate" back the hashes to strings, but leave the numbers intact at the end of the lines. Since there would be only 150K hashes it's not that bad. What would be a good way to calculate individual hashes for each of the strings? Some AWK magic? See file samples at the end.   • Ubuntu 11.10 firewall/gateway - no client internet access

    I have read many other posts but cannot figure this out. eth0 is my external connected to a Comcast modem. The server has internet access with no issues. eth1 is internal and running DHCP for the clients. I have DHCP working just fine, all my clients can get an IP and ping the server but they cannot access the internet.   • Is it possible to run several virtual machines each with independent mouse+keyboard on a single PC?

    My goal is to instead of buying 4 separate basic PCs (plus the obvious peripherals), buy just one fast PC and the peripherals. I'm wondering if I can use a more powerful computer, say, one with core i7 and plenty of RAM, with 2 video cards (total of 4 monitor outputs) to run 4 or more virtual machines (WinXPs) so instead of having 4 individual machines, I'll be having just one. However, the catch is, is it possible to have a pair of mouse and keyboard + input/output audio for each of these virtual machines?

    In debian/ubuntu I want to a) create a list of all the files in one directory tree b) do the same for a second directory tree c) compare the two lists such that, only the file NAMES are compared (i.e. just comparing the "file.txt" part so that "/home/folder/file.txt" == "/home/secondfolder/folder/file.txt) d) output a list of all the duplicates can anyone please explain how to do this using scripting languages or regex or something?

  • Zabbix not getting data for one filesystem

    I have Zabbix monitoring disk space for several volumes on several servers. It works fine on all of them except for one of the volumes on one of the servers which always reports as 0. However, when I run ./zabbix_get -s localhost -p 10050 -k 'vfs.fs.size[/home, free]' locally on the machine in question, it gives me the correct, non-zero size which matches the output of df. How can I go about troubleshooting and correcting this problem?

  • Using ffmpeg to cut up video

    I am using ffmpeg like this e.g.: ffmpeg -i input.wmv -ss 60 -t 60 -acodec copy -vcodec copy output.wmv to cut out a section of a large file. The -ss part works fine but the -t is ignored. That is, it correctly removes the first -ss seconds but then just keeps going to the end of the input with the copy. Is there a way to use ffmpeg to cut off the end of a video without recoding it?

I want to get the values for what is happening in every 5 minutes (not since boot time, iostat's first output gives values since boot time). How can I do it in nagios? EDIT The tps should NOT be calculated #of transactions happened since reboot divided by uptime. What I want is # of transferred happened in last X mins divided X*60.

    Hi everyone, at the moment i have a dual monitor setup on my main PCIe gfx card. I know that on windows it is almost impossible to have a second card (eg no thrills PCI card) running without having an SLI motherboard because of a driver issue. Well this was my conclusion after many weeks of research.   • Not getting native resolution of external monitor in Ubuntu

    Since there us a defect in my laptop screen, I am using an external Dell 1600x1000 monitor. Windows was recognizing the native resolution correctly. But when I installed Ubuntu 10.10, I get only up to 1024x768 in the Monitor preferences. I had a look at this and tried to add resolution by running xrandr --addmode VGA 1600×1000 but I am getting the error xrandr: cannot find output "VGA" What is the way out.

I usually have to keep them on the lowest setting. If the source material is louder than average, I have to lower the output volume in the player software.     I've tried to make the title the most meaningfull I could but it still looks ugly. The premises. We are using RHEL3-U8 as OS on most servers here, don't ask me why or suggest to upgrade, it's not on today's schedule. That means kernel used is 2.4.21 I have no access to the remote server, but I know it is a netApp NAS rack. $> smbclient --version Version 3.0.9-1.3E.9 Here is the /etc/fstab line : //NASHOSTNAME/share /mnt/mydir smbfs ro,uid=123,gid=123,workgroup=XXXX,credentials=/somefile 0 0 Here is the following mount output line //NASHOSTNAME/share on /mnt/mydir type smbfs (0) The symptoms. I can list the share without problems, even cd in there. The issue appears if I try to read any file : $> cat /mnt/mydir/fileX.txt cat: /mnt/mydir/fileX.txt: Input/output error In the system logs (/var/log/kernel for example) the following errors appear. What I have tried. I have tried adding debug=4 to the mounting options and remounting the share and the logs still look the same. I have tried to mount the share with smbclient and I am able to fetch files with the get command. Both targets are in the same subnet, so network problem should be out, even if the LAN goes through a VPN with optimizers, MTU has already been decreased to 1450. I can also mount the share through NFS but then the files are all root.root 700 and I need to read them with another user...

    I am trying to do [me@myPc]$ ssh me@server "nohup myBashScript.sh &" My goal is to launch the process on the server, and then immediately return. It is not working: The job is started on server, but I still get the output on myPc and bash wait for completion prior to asking me for another command. Why ? It's not supposed to !
