• Fibonacci numbers in F#

  As you may have gathered from some of my previous posts, I've been spending some quality time at Project Euler.  Normally I do my solutions in C#, but since I have also started learning F#, it only made sense to switch over to F# to get my math coding fix. This week's post is just a small snippet - spefically, a simple function to return a fibonacci number given it's place in the sequence.  One popular example uses recursion: let rec fib n = if n < 2 then 1 else fib (n-2) + fib(n-1) While this is certainly elegant, the recursion is absolutely brutal on performance.  So I decided to spend a little time, and find an option that achieved the same functionality, but used a recursive function.  And since this is F#, I wanted to make sure I did it without the use of any mutable variables. Here's the solution I came up with: let rec fib n1 n2 c =    if c = 1 then        n2    else        fib n2 (n1+n2) (c-1);;let GetFib num =    (fib 1 1 num);;printfn "%A" (GetFib 1000);; Essentially, this function works through the sequence moving forward, passing the two most recent numbers and a counter to the recursive calls until it has achieved the desired number of iterations.  At that point, it returns the latest fibonacci number. Enjoy!

• Announcing Release of Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1!

  Oct 26, 2012We are very happy to announce the release of  Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1, providing High Availability (HA) and  Disaster Recovery (DR) capabilities for Oracle Solaris 11.1.  This is yet another proof of Oracle's continued investment in Oracle Solaris technologies such as Oracle Solaris Cluster. For this new release we have improved the Solaris Cluster integration within the Oracle environment. For example  we've created new agents such as PeopleSoft JobScheduler or added the support of the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance replication in the Geo Edition module (to facilitate disaster recovery in multi-site configuration equipped with those types of storage.) We have also extended the Oracle Solaris Zone Cluster feature with support of Oracle Solaris 10 zone clusters and exclusive-IP to facilitate deployment of virtualized or cloud architecture.And there are many more new features to discover in this release. • AJAX Control Toolkit - Globalization (Language)

  For those who use AjaxToolKit controls presenting a language-dependent data (the CalendarExternder with the names of the months and weeks, for example) you can change the language to be presented in a simple way. In Web.Config let's define the primary culture as follows: < system . web > <System. Web> < globalization uiCulture = "pt-pt" culture = "pt-pt" /> <Globalization UICulture = "en-us" culture = "en-us" /> ... ...  In this example I'm using Portuguese. To finish it is necessary to change our ScriptManager. Be it the ToolScriptManager AjaxToolKit or belonging to the ScriptManager's framework. It is important that AjaxTookKit is updated to avoid shortages or errors in translation, though I have not updated by this error in the ModalPopup the latest version, and any controls that I have used are translated correctly.

• New PeopleTools Developer Book Available

  I recently had an opportunity to work through a copy of a new book for PeopleTools developers and thought it might be of interest to the readers of the PeopleTools blog. It is called PeopleSoft PeopleTools Tips & Techniques, and was written by Jim Marion, a long-time Oracle employee we often recruit to deliver the very popular and highly regarded conference sessions of the same title. This book is not for the beginner and doesn't contain much introductory material. Instead, it's for the more experienced PeopleSoft developer looking to maximize the efficiency and productivity of their PeopleSoft applications. Throughout the book Jim offers proven methods and best practices he's worked with personally. • Coders For Charities

  Last weekend I had the opportunity to give back to the community doing what I love. As geeks we don’t usually have this opportunity. The event is called Coders 4 Charities (C4C) and it’s a grueling weekend of coding for nearly 30 hours over the weekend. When you finish you get to present to the charity and all of the other groups what you have completed. From the site: Coders For Charities is a 3-day charity event that pairs charities and local software developers. Charities often do not have the funds to implement a new website or intranet or database solution. Software developers often do not volunteer for charities because their skills do not apply. This event is the perfect marriage of these two needs; software developers volunteering their time to help charities better serve their community though the latest technology! The actual event was lined with multiple charities and about 50 developers, designers, business analysts, etc, each working with a different charity to come up with a solution that they could implement in less than 3 days. C4C provided a place and food for us so that we wouldn’t have to leave much during the time we had to implement our solution. They also provided games like Rock Band so we could get away and clear our minds for a few moments if necessary. I don’t think we made it down there to play, but the food and drinks were a huge help for us. The charity we we picked was Harvest Home. They had a need for an online intranet site where they could track membership and gardening. Over the next few days we worked on a site we could give them. Below is a screen shot with private data marked out. It was an awesome and humbling experience to be able to give back to a charity and I’m happy I was a part of it. I would definitely do it again. How often do we get to use our abilities to volunteer our time to a charity?

• Java Champion Jorge Vargas on Extreme Programming, Geolocalization, and Latin American Programmers

  In a new interview, up on otn/java, titled “An Interview with Java Champion Jorge Vargas,” Jorge Vargas, a leading Mexican developer, discusses the process of introducing companies to Enterprise JavaBeans through the application of Extreme Programming. Among other things, he gives workshops about building code with agile techniques and creates a master project to build all apps based on Scrum, XP methods and Kanban. He focuses on building core components such as security, login, and menus. Vargas remarks, “This may sound easy, but it’s not—the process takes months and hundreds of hours, but it can be controlled, and with small iterations, we can translate customer requirements and problems of legacy systems to the new system.” In regard to his work with geolocalization, he says: “We have launched a beta program of Yumbling, a geolocalization-based app, with mobile clients for BlackBerry, iPhone, Android, and Nokia, with a Web interface. The first challenge was to design a simple universal mechanism providing information to all clients and to minimize maintenance provision to them. I try not to generalize a lot—to avoid low performance or misunderstanding in processing data. We use the latest Java EE technology—during the last five years, I’ve taught people how to use Java EE efficiently.” Check out the interview here.

• TechEd 2012: Day 3 &ndash; Build Me A Solution

  While digesting my lunch it was time to digest some TFS Build information. While much of my time is spent wearing my developer’s hat I am still a jack of all trades and automated builds are an important aspect of any project.  Because of this I was looking forward to finding out what new features are available in the latest release of Team Foundation Server. The first feature that caught my attention is the TFS Admin Client.  After being used to dealing with NAnt in the past it is nice to see a build a configuration GUI that is so flexible and well thought out.  The bonus is that it the tools that are incorporated in Visual Studio 2012 are just as feature rich.  Life is good. Since automated builds are the hub of your development process in a continuous integration shop I was really interested in the process related options. The biggest value add that I noticed was merge gated check-ins.  Merge or batch gated check-ins are an interesting concept.  If the build breaks with all the changes then TFS will run separate builds for each of the check-ins.  This ability to identify the actual offending check-in can save a lot of time and gray hair. • VirtualBox 3.2 Release

  The latest version of VirtualBox is out - version 3.2.  It is the first release as Oracle VirtualBox and there are a lot of new features.  Many of these I see directly impacting the Oracle VDI solution in upcoming releases (just my guess, of course), and I am updating my notebook as I write this. Er... OK - Done!There are enough features that they warrant you taking a look at this two-page VirtualBox Community Bulletin.pdf.  No point in me restating them.If you and your organization haven't tried VirtualBox, or you haven't looked at it in a while, you owe it to yourself to give this a run.  This is small, simple, powerful, software that allows you to do way more than most people would ever need in hosting a Virtual machine on you local machine.  I routinely will do a demo on a two-year-old Macbook running OS X locally, plus a Solaris 10 VM running the Sun Ray server, and a Windows XP VM and hang a couple Sun Rays off of it - and the performance is stellar.You can subscribe to the mailing lists and get access to the Beta releases as they come out as well, if you are into 'bleeding edge'.40,000 downloads a day is the current rate (before this new release), but it will jump for sure now.  Might as well join in!
