• How many months of fixing somebody else's bugs would you endure?

  I understand that fixing bugs is a way to learn the system for the new people. But what if the system is so large that you can fix other people's bugs for 2 years and still not learn about every aspect of it? I would imagine that most people would get bored and not give their 100% to fixing bugs caused by others. Is there something wrong with the process? Everybody is chanting "Scrum! Scrum!" and getting certified, but that is just another phrase to me. How do you get noticed if all you do is fix bugs? Stand by a water-cooler perhaps and brag about how cool my bug fixes are? My political beliefs seem to be opposite from everybody else's at the company, and I have zero interest in pop culture/trivia/Tiger Woods scandals - there goes my opportunity to socialize during a lunch hour.

• Asp.Net error reporting with stacktrace

  I have an Asp.Net web site set up to log errors using Log4Net (in global.asax) and redirect users to a custom error page (set up in web.config with: ). On this error page the users have the opportunity to write about what they did when the error occurred and post the description back to us to help fix the problem. My question is this: How do i connect the error stacktrace to the users error report? It appears that .Net has handled the error when it was written to the log file and the custom error page has no information about the stacktrace. If only I could see the stacktrace from the custom error page code-behind my problem would be solved.

• networking application and GUI in python

  I'm writing an application that sends files over network, I want to develop a custom protocol to not limit myself in term on feature richness (http wouldn't be appropriate, the nearest thing is the bittorrent protocol maybe). I've tried with twisted, I've built a good app but there's a bug that makes my GUI blocking, so I've to switch to another framework/strategy. What do you suggest? Using raw sockets and using gtk mainloop (there are select-like functions in the toolkit) is too much difficult? It's viable running two mainloops in different threads? Asking for suggestions

• PreparedStatement and setTimestamp in oracle jdbc

  Hi everyone, I am using PreparedStatement with Timestamp in where clause: PreparedStatement s=c.prepareStatement("select utctimestamp from t where utctimestamp>=? and utctimestamp<?"); s.setTimestamp(1, new Timestamp(1273017600000L)); //2010-05-05 00:00 GMT s.setTimestamp(2, new Timestamp(1273104000000L)); //2010-05-06 00:00 GMT The result I get is different, when I have different time zones on the client computer. Is this a bug in Oracle jdbc? or correct behavior? The parameter is Timestamp, and I expected that no time conversions will be done on the way. The database column type is DATE, but I also checked it with TIMESTAMP column type with the same results. Is there a way to achieve correct result? I cannot change default timezone in the the whole application to UTC. Thanks for your help

• SQL Compact Edition 3.5 SP 1 - LockTimeOutException - how to debug?

  Intermittently in our app, we encounter LockTimeoutExceptions being throw from SQL CE. We've recently upgraded to 3.5 SP 1, and a number of them seem to have gone away, but we still do see them occasionally. I'm certain it's a bug in our code (which is multi-threaded) but I haven't been able to pin it down precisely. Does anyone have any good techniques for debugging this problem? The exceptions log like this (there's never a stack trace for these exceptions): SQL Server Compact timed out waiting for a lock. The default lock time is 2000ms for devices and 5000ms for desktops. The default lock timeout can be increased in the connection string using the ssce: default lock timeout property. [ Session id = 6,Thread id = 7856,Process id = 10116,Table name = Product,Conflict type = s lock (x blocks),Resource = DDL ] Our database is read-heavy, but does seldom writes, and I think I've got everything protected where it needs to be. • Android: heavy traffic on server causes app to force close

  I have developed an app to communicate with my own server and published it. However, sometimes the app force closes. I know there is no bug in the code because the app works properly most of the time, but sometimes it is waiting for an answer from the server forever. I think this is due to the fact that so many people are using the app, and the app refreshes every 1 second or so, so this heavy traffic causes the server to take a large amount of time to respond. So how do you take care of such a use case? should I have a use case where if the server does not respond after some time you just stop the app and throw a message saying that the server is not responding or something like that?

  I have a Excel Workbook that I use as a report template. I change the datasource on each pivot and datatable in a C# app. When I change the datatable datasource it tweeks the columns. • How to track dealloc of an abstract object class (NSMutable...)

  I have a bug in my code caused by a premature freeing of a ObjC object. I seem not to be able to find it by just looking at my code. There's usually a simple trick to track the dealloc to any class: Implement dealloc, and set a breakpoint. This even usually works with standard objects, by subclassing them and making sure I instantiate the subclass instead of the standard class. However, this does not seem to work with NSMutableArray, and probably neither with similar NSMutable... classes. Some explanations for this can be found here: link text Any other ideas how to track the dealloc invocation of a particular class or object so that I can see the call stack? It's probably possible with DTrace. Any pointers without having to read the entire dtrace docs first?

• C# 2D Vector Graphics Game using DirectX or OpenGL?

  Hey Guys, So it has been a while since I have done any game programming in C#, but I have had a recent bug to get back into it, and I wanted some opinions on what configuration I should use. I wanted to use C# as that is what I use for work, and have become vary familiar with. I have worked with both DirectX and OpenGL in the past, but mostly in 3D, but now I am interested in writing a 2D game with all vector graphics, something that resembles the look of Geometry Wars or the old Star Wars arcade game. Key points I am interested in: • Ease of use/implementation. • Easy on memory. (I plan on having a lot going on at once) • Looks good, I don't want curve to look pixelated. • Maybe some nice effects like glow or particle. • A fast way to get Reporting Services local site working?

  Hello I was here trying to figure out why my Reports manager is empty, there's no tabs at all. I installed SQL Server 2008 complete, but didn't not configure Reporting Services. When installing SQL Server 2008, this Windows 7 version didn't have yet IIS installed, I installed it later. I don't see where is this localhost/Reports physically on my Hard Drive, where is the physic folder? I don't see on IIS where is Report folder, would it exist? The site settings people talk about, I can't find it. The "Reporting Services" service is running on automatic at SQL Server Configuration Manager. How can I get Reporting Services this working without struggling? (I can't see why is necessary to customize all these user permissions)

• jQuery UI .widgets resetting scroll positions of elements contained within

  I am making heavy use of jQuery UI with my latest project. Unfortunately I've hit a major wall due to some really whacky behavior exhibited by the jQuery UI widgets when they contain elements with scrollbars for overflow. Check out this demo Scroll down in one of the .scroll-container elements Click an accordion header Click on old header - note the element was auto-scrolled to the top. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? It's screwing with a major plugin of mine that utilizes jQuery scrolling. I'm flat-out lost as to what to do here! • Is there a work-around that allows missing data to equal NULL for LOAD DATA INFILE in MySQL?

  I have a lot of large csv files with NULL values stored as ,, (i.e., no entry). After a lot of searching I found that this is a known "bug", although it may be a feature for some users. Is there a way that I can fix this on the fly without pre-processing? These data are all numeric, so a zero value is very different from NULL. Or if I have to do pre-processing, is there one that is most promising for dealing with tens of csv files of 100mb to 1gb? Thanks!

• Need ideas for reprocessing images using attachment_fu

  Hi, I discovered a bug in my Rails app due to Rails app and gems upgrades and undocumented code from the previous developers. I have a lot of images that have been processed, but not sized correctly using attachment_fu. All of the images that were uploaded since the upgrade need to be resized correctly. Does anyone have any ideas to reprocess all of the images within the folders and resize them to the correct sizes? I'd hate to have to do these all manually. THANKS!! Cindy

• 500 error on https, site loads fine [closed]

  Using http://web-sniffer.net/, I'm seeing a 500 internal error when accessing the https://www version of my site (https://moblized.com). However that URL loads perfectly fine with no errors. I was checking this because Google Webmaster is showing a bunch of 500 errors on my site. Also just noticed that I get a 200 success error if sniffing with HTTP 1.0, but a 500 with HTTP 1.1 Note: All other URL versions 301 redirect to https://www, eg. http://www , https:// , http:// FIXED: For any curious parties, there was one PHP bug that was causing a fatal error, but was still allowing the page to load. Turning on php_debug helped...

  I am using json with unicode text, and having a problem with the IE8 native json implementation. <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <script> var stringified = JSON.stringify("?????? olé"); alert(stringified); </script> Using json2.js or FireFox native json, the alert() string is the same as in the original one. IE8 on the other hand returns Unicode values rather than the original text \u0e2a\u0e27\u0e31\u0e2a\u0e14\u0e35 ol\u00e9 . Is there an easy way to make IE behave like the others, or convert this string to how it should be ? And would you regard this as a bug in IE, I thought native json implementations were supposed to be drop-in identical replacements for json2.js ?

• Jquery tooltip plugin qTip doesn't seem to set width properly

No matter what i put in that width attribute, i get the same size width tooltip which is about half of the width that i need. the height is perfectly fine. any ideas? is this a bug in the product ?

There are some free online bar code generators in the Internet, and I found many differences between their output and our library output regarding graphics and text field below the code.   New to android. Running Eclipse on Ubuntu 9.10 with Android SDK plugin installed and working. Trying to get some code samples from http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/get.html , and following its procedure to load said samples in Eclipse yields: Parent of resource: /home/user/android-sdk/platforms/android-4/samples/Notepad/.project is marked as read-only. chmod is not recursive, so I entered ~/android-sdk/platforms and "chmod 777 *" ie. all folders in /platforms. Still doesnt work. Appears to be be a bug in Eclipse that wants to create the project in the SDK folder rather than under ~/workspace.

  Can it really be true that the attr("href") command for a link is handled very different in IE7 in comparison to all other browsers? Let's say I have a page at http://example.com/page.html and I have this HTML: <a href="#someAnchor" class="lnkTest">Link text</a> and this jQuery: var strHref = $(".lnkTest").attr("href"); Then in IE7 the value of the strHref variable will be "http://example.com/page.htm#someAnchor" but in other browsers it will be "#someAnchor". I believe that the last mentioned case is the most correct one, so is it just a case of IE7 being a bad boy or is it a bug in jQuery?

But MySQL reports 4 unique entries for each level. In other words, number of unique elements for each level is always equal to number of rows in log table. • Advice about testing an application before release?

  I would like to get some tips from peer developers about how you go about testing an application you developed, prior to release to QA. Keep in mind, this is a small scale application (requirements are verbal), and so doing formal testing processes wont work, especially, since your boss told you to develop this app quick, push it out the door. Despite the time restraints, I would like to make sure it is bug free, however, numerous times in the past, I have had the app sent back to me because clicking the "Reset" button, messes up the other controls alignment etc. I know there are people out there that develop small scale apps fast, and send them out with minimal bugs. • Undefined behaviour with non-virtual destructors - is it a real-world issue?

  Consider the following code: class A { public: A() {} ~A() {} }; class B: public A { B() {} ~B() {} }; A* b = new B; delete b; // undefined behaviour My understanding is that the C++ standard says that deleting b is undefined behaviour - ie, anything could happen. But, in the real world, my experience is that ~A() is always invoked, and the memory is correctly freed. if B introduces any class members with their own destructors, they won't get invoked, but I'm only interested in the simple kind of case above, where inheritance is used maybe to fix a bug in one class method for which source code is unavailable. Obviously this isn't going to be what you want in non-trivial cases, but it is at least consistent. Are you aware of any C++ implementation where the above does NOT happen, for the code shown?
