  Hi, I did some changes to my model (but I don't want migration yet, so I just remove the application, built clean etc.) so my application works in the simulator. However, when I run it on the iPhone, I get the following error: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'executeFetchRequest:error: A fetch request must have an entity.' I set the entity like this: NSEntityDescription *entity = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Document" inManagedObjectContext:managedObjectContext]; My managedObjectContext is not nil. But I suspect that it doesn't load the object model correctly or something similar because If I display the entities in the model, the list is empty. How can I make sure the model is loaded? Thanks,

• Deep Null checking, is there a better way?

  We've all been there, we have some deep property like cake.frosting.berries.loader that we need to check if it's null so there's no exception. The way to do is is to use a short-circuiting if statement if (cake != null && cake.frosting != null && cake.frosting.berries != null) ... This strikes me however as not very elegant, there should perhaps be an easier way to check the entire chain and see if it comes up against a null variable/property. So is it possible using some extension method or would it be a language feature, or is it just a bad idea?

(Is there an equivalent of Java's safe removal operation on some iterators?) How can I do this correctly, or with LINQ?

• File.mkdir is not working and I can't understand why

  Hello, I've this brief snippet: String target = baseFolder.toString() + entryName; target = target.substring(0, target.length() - 1); File targetdir = new File(target); if (!targetdir.mkdirs()) { throw new Exception("Errore nell'estrazione del file zip"); } doesn't mattere if I leave the last char (that is usually a slash). It's done this way to work on both unix and windows. The path is actually obtained from the URI of the base folder. As you can see from baseFolder.toString() (baseFolder is of type URI and is correct). The base folder actually exists. I can't debug this because all I get is true or false from mkdir, no other explanations.The weird thing is that baseFolder is created as well with mkdir and in that case it works. Now I'm under windows. the value of target just before the creation of targetdir is "file:/C:/Users/dario/jCommesse/jCommesseDB" if I cut and paste it (without the last entry) in windows explore it works...

• C# threading a FolderBrowserDialog

  Hi, Im trying to use the FolderBrowserDialog to select a folder in C#. At first I got a Thread exception, so I googled what was wrong and fixed that but now im stuck at a nother problem. I whant to know when a folder has been selected.   I'm trying to call a parameterized stored procedure from SQL Server 2005 in my C# Winforms app. I add the parameters from TextBoxeslike so (there are 88 of them): cmd.Parameters.Add("@CustomerName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 100).Value = CustomerName.Text; I get the following exception: "System.InvalidCastException: Failed to convert parameter value from a TextBox to a String. ---> System.InvalidCastException: Object must implement IConvertible." The line throwing the error is when I call the query: cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); I also tried using the .ToString() method on the TextBoxes, which seemed pointless anyway, and threw the same error. Am I passing the parameters incorrectly?

  I'm helping a friend with a java problem. However, we've hit a snag. We're using Java.Util.Scanner.nextInt() to get a number from the user, asking continiously if the user gives anything else. Only problem is, we can't figure out how to do the error handeling. • Can't DER encode and BER decode RSA public key

  I have problems using Crypto++ to save a RSA public key (that I obtained loading a private key file in PKCS#8 format). When decoding the key, I always get a BERDecodeErr exception. How do you do to save or open the public key?   I have set up my mapping file and classes as suggested by many articles class A { ... IList BBag {get;set;} ... } class B { ... A aObject {get;set;} ... } <class name="A">...<bag name="BBag" table="B" inverse="true" lazy="false"><key column="A_ID" /><one-to-many class="B" /></bag>... <class name="B">...<many-to-one name="aObject" class="A" column="A_ID" />... I added a set of A's to the A table and a set of B's to the B table, all the data is stored as expected. However if I try and access aInstance.BBag.Count I get a null reference exception. I think I missing some key knowledge on how an bag gets instantiated. Thanks

• How many layers are between my program and the hardware?

  I somehow have the feeling that modern systems, including runtime libraries, this exception handler and that built-in debugger build up more and more layers between my (C++) programs and the CPU/rest of the hardware. I'm thinking of something like this: 1 + 2 OS top layer Runtime library/helper/error handler a hell lot of DLL modules OS kernel layer Do you really want to run 1 + 2?-Windows popup (don't take this serious) OS kernel layer Hardware abstraction Hardware Go through at least 100 miles of circuits Eventually arrive at the CPU ADD 1, 2 Go all the way back to my program Nearly all technical things are simply wrong and in some random order, but you get my point right? How much longer/shorter is this chain when I run a C++ program that calculates 1 + 2 at runtime on Windows? How about when I do this in an interpreter? (Python|Ruby|PHP) Is this chain really as dramatic in reality? Does Windows really try "not to stand in the way"? e.g.: Direct connection my binary < hardware?

  I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). • How to Key-Value-Observe the rotation of a CALayer?

  I can access the value like this: NSNumber* rotationZ = [myLayer valueForKeyPath:@"transform.rotation.z"]; But for some reason, if I try to KV-observe that key path, I get a compiler error. First, this is how I try to do it: [myLayer addObserver:self forKeyPath:@"transform.rotation.z" options:0 context:nil]; The compiler tells me: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSUnknownKeyException', reason: '[ addObserver: forKeyPath:@"rotation.z" options:0x0 context:0x528890] was sent to an object that is not KVC-compliant for the "rotation" property.' what I don't get is, why I can access that z value by KVC key path, but not add an observer to it. Does this make sense? How else could I observe the z value of that matrix? I don't care about the other values of the matrix. Only the z rotation. Any other way to access and observe it?

  Hi, I have a User hibernate class, Clerk class and Consumer class. All these maps to their own tables in database. The User PK also acts as Clerk's and Consumer's PK. So now my problem is that if a user is initially a Clerk, he has a record in Users table and Clerks table. If that user wants to become a consumer, I want to link that User's record to the new Consumer's record. So even if I pass the userId to the consumer's record, it treats it as a new User to be persisted and gives a duplicate_key exception. How do I tell Hiernate to link the same user object with this new Consumer object. Thanks in advance, -Chandni

  I am using Asp.Net MVC 2 - RC w/ Areas. I am receiving an ambigious controller name exception due to having same controller name in two different areas. I've read Phil Haack's post I can't figure out the syntax when trying to use UrlHelper (I have an extensions class). e.g. public static string MyAreaHome(this UrlHelper helper) { return helper.RouteUrl("ARoute", new { controller = "Home", action = "Index" }); } I've tried the obvious of adding namespace="mynamespace" but that didn't work, it just added the namespace to the url. • What is the correct way to unit test areas around exceptions

  Hi, Looking at our code coverage of our unit tests we're quite high. But the last few % is tricky because a lot of them are catching things like database exceptions - which in normal circumstances just dont happen. For example the code prevents fields being too long etc, so the only possible database exceptions are if the DB is broken/down, or if the schema is changed under our feet. So is the only way to Mock the objects such that the exception can be thrown? That seems a little bit pointless. Perhaps it's better to just accept not getting 100% code coverage? Thanks, Dan

  What's the difference between try { fooBar(); } finally { barFoo(); } and try { fooBar(); } catch(Throwable throwable) { barFoo(throwable); // Does something with throwable, logs it, or handles it. } I like the second version better because it gives me access to the Throwable. Is there any logical difference or a preferred convention between the two variations? Also, is there a way to access the exception from the finally clause?

I have some optional fileds in my form and I have this problem with the following code: MsgBox(myXPathNavigator.SelectSingleNode("/my:Status/my:Questions/my:Questions1", _ Me.NamespaceManager).IsNode.ToString) When the optional filed 'Questions1' is inserted to the form I get the value 'true' by the IsNode function. If the field it is not inserted I have an exception, stating that the reference is not correct (and it is indeed true). Is there a way to verify about a node, whether it is present or not in my form?
