• Multiple instances of Intellitrace.exe process

  Not so long ago I was confronted with a very bizarre problem… I was using visual studio 2010 and whenever I opened up the Test Impact view I would suddenly see my pc perf go down drastically…  Investigating this problem, I found out that hundreds of “Intellitrace.exe” processes had been started on my system and I could not close them as they would re-start as soon as I would close one.  That was very weird.  So I knew it had something to do with the Test Impact but how can this feature and Intellitrace.exe going crazy be related?  After a bit of thinking I remembered that a teammate (Etienne Tremblay, ALM MVP) had told me once that he had seen this issue before just after installing a MOCKING FRAMEWORK that uses the .NET Profiler API…  Apparently there’s a conflict between the test impact features of Visual Studio and some mocking products using the .NET profiler API…  Maybe because VS 2010 also uses this feature for Test Impact purposes, I don’t know… Anyways, here’s the fix…  Go to your VS 2010 and click the “Test” menu.  Then go to the “Edit Test Settings” and choose EACH test setting file applying the following actions (normally 2 files being “Local” and TraceAndTestImpact”: -          Select the Data And Diagnostic option on the left -          Make sure that the ASP.NET Client Proxy for Intellitrace and Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Make sure that the Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Save and close   Edit Test Settings   Problem solved…  For me having to choose between the “Test Impact” features and the “Mocking Framework” was a no brainer, bye bye test impact…  I did not investigate much on this subject but I feel there might be a way to have them both working by enabling one after the other in a precise sequence…  Feel free to leave a comment if you know how to make them both work at the same time!   Hope this helps someone out there !

  We've been experiencing some problems with our Subversion server after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to access a repository, regardless of client (I've tried git-svn and svn on Windows as well as svn on Ubuntu 10.04, from different computers and network locations), I get a 400 bad request. • Oracle VM server for SPARC 2.2 on S11

  Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.2 has been released for a little while now. The https://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization blog has an overview of all the 2.2 features. Initially, what was released was the SVR4 package for Solaris 10 (which is unbundled and wasn't constrained by any external schedule). On Solaris 11, the 'ldomsmanager' package is built into Solaris (and therefore doesn't need to be downloaded separately) so it is delivered as part of an S11 Support Repository Update (SRU). Some of the features in 2.2 are specific to S11 (SR-IOV and the ability to live migrate between machines with different CPU types) and so there have been many requests to know when are the S11 bits coming. Solaris 11 SRU8.5 was released on Friday and this includes Oracle VM server for SPARC 2.2 so if you're already running an S11 SRU all you need do is a 'pkg update' to get the 2.2 bits. If you're still running the original S11 and your 'pkg publisher' output shows the /release repository then you'll need to sign up for the /support repo by getting the appropriate keys and certificates to access the repository (requires a support contract). • Anyone had any issues getting a disk to start on a Walrus storage sytem?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to get a Eucalyptus system up and running and have managed to get the cloud controller and node controller running fine, with an instance running in the cloud system, but without any persistent storage. When I try and create a volume I get euca-create-volume -s 10 -z cluster1 VOLUME vol-5F5D0659 10 creating 2010-05-31T09:10:11.408Z but when I try and see the volume I get euca-describe-volumes VOLUME vol-5F5D0659 10 cluster1 failed 2010-05-31T09:10:11.408Z VOLUME vol-5FE9065E 10 cluster1 failed 2010-05-31T09:02:56.721Z I've dug all over the place, but can't seem to turn up a reason the creation would fail or where to start looking to see what the issue might be. Anyone have any ideas where to even start looking for the answer to this? Ta Peter.

  I have been tasked with investigating the Guidance available around Visual Studio 2010 for one of our customers and it makes sense to make this available to everyone. The official guidance around Visual Studio 2010 has been created by the Visual Studio ALM Rangers and is a brew of a bunch of really clever guys experiences working with the tools and customers. I will be creating a series of posts on the different guidance options as many people still do not know about them even though Willy-Peter Schaub has done a fantastic job of making sure they get the recognition they deserve. There is a full list of all of the Rangers Solutions and Projects on MSDN, but I wanted to add my own point of view to the usefulness of each one. If you don’t know who the rangers are you should have a look at the Visual Studio ALM Rangers Index to see the full breadth of where the rangers are. • How to convert Windows filenames (from a checksums.md5) to *nix notation so I can use it on my shell with md5sum?

  I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: \ instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). • Forward emails from specific domain in Exchange

  Our Exchange server handles emails for @ourdomain.com (for example). We have multiple clients that will send emails to our [email protected] email address and we want to configure server-side rules that will forward emails from each client's domain to a different email address within our exchange server. For example: [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] and we forward it to [email protected] [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] and we forward it to [email protected] ...and so on. It would be nice if we can additionally stop the email arriving in the [email protected] mailbox, but that is not a specific requirement. We have a rule setup in Outlook that sort of works, but it doesn't do all from a domain only specific email addresses. It does work when Outlook is not running which is a start. I realise it would be easier to give each client a partiuclar email address and have them email straight to that rather than all use the same, but this is what I have been asked to setup.... :S

• In excel how can I consolidate information in rows based on 2 critera?

  I have a worksheet with columns A through BR. Column B contains customers (repeating values) Column J contains a filing date (repeating values) Column O contains loan information I would like to consolidate customers and filing date into 1 row and then have the loan information in subsequent rows appended to the end. • VS2012 Coded UI Test closes browser by default

  *** Thanks to Steve St. Jean for asking this question and Shubhra Maji for answering this question on the ALM champs list *** 01 – Introduction The default behaviour of coded UI tests running in an Internet Explorer browser has changed between MTM 2010 and MTM 2012. When running a Coded UI test recorded in MTM 2012 or VS 2012 at the end of the test execution the instance of the browser is closed by default. 02 – Description Let’s take an example. As you can see the CloseDinnerNowWeb() method is commented out.  In VS 2010, upon running this test the browser would be left open after the test execution completes. In VS 2012 RTM the behaviour has changed. At the end of the test run, the IE window is closed even though there is no command from the test to do so. In the example below when the test runs, it opens 2 IE windows to the website. When the test run completes both the windows are closed, even though there is no command in the test to close the window. 03 – How to change the CUIT behaviour not to close the IE window after test execution? This change to this functionality in VS 2012 is by design. It is however possible to rollback the behaviour to how it originally was in VS 2010 i.e. the IE window will not close after the test execution unless otherwise commanded by the test to do so. • Tool/Program/Script/Formula for deciphering Active Directory Connection Strings for 3rd party user i

  We're using WSFTP, which has an Active Directory Integration module. To populate the user accounts you need to provide a connection string akin to: OU=Users,DC=domain,DC=com CN=Domain Users,OU=Users,DC=domain,DC=com Questions: Is there a Tool/Program/Script/Formula that allows me to decipher how these strings might look based on what I can see in Active Directory Users & Computers? Is there a proper/accepted name for these types of connection strings? I don't even know what to Google to get more information about how to format one properly How would I troubleshoot the connection string if I think it looks correctly formatted, but it isn't working? Thanks!

• Adventures in Lab Management Configuration: CMMI Edition Part 1 of 3

  I remember at one point someone telling me how close Migrate was to Migraine. This was a process that included an environment from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010, needed to be migrated too as far as the process template goes.  Here we are talking about CMMI v4.2 to CMMI v5.0.  Now, the process to migrate the TFS Infrastructure is one thing, migrating the Process Template is a different deal, not hard … just involved. Followed a combination of steps that came from a blog post as the main guidance and then MSDN (as suggested on the guidance post) to complement some tasks and steps. Again, the focus I have here is CMMI. The high level steps taken to enable the TFS 2008 CMMI v4.2 migrated to TFS 2010 Process Template are: 1)  Backup the Collection, Configuration and Warehouse Databases. 2)  Downloaded the Process Template using Visual Studio 2010. 3) Exported, modified and imported Bug Type Definition 4) Exported, modified and imported Scenario or Requirement Type Definition. 5) Created and imported bug field mappings. Now, we can attempt to connect using Test Manager, and you should be able to get this going. After that was done, it was time to enroll VMs that already existed in the environment.  This was a bit more challenging, but in the end it was a matter of just analyzing the changes that had been made to had a temporary work around from the time we migrated to the time we converted the Work Items and such and added fields to enable communication between the project and the Test and Lab Manager component. There are 2 more parts to this post, the second will describe the detailed steps taken to complete the Process Template update and the third will talk about the gotchas and fixes for the Lab Management portion.

• So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit?

  Google recently announced that they will no longer support older browsers on Aug 1st: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13639875 http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/our-plans-to-support-modern-browsers.html For this reason, soon Google Apps will only support modern browsers. Beginning August 1st, we’ll support the current and prior major release of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis. Each time a new version is released, we’ll begin supporting the update and stop supporting the third-oldest version. There is nothing worse than looking at the patching of code that takes place to support older browsers. If we could all move towards a standards only web (I'm looking at you IE9) then surely we could spend more time programming good web apps and less trying to make them run equally on terrible non standards compliant older browsers. So when can the rest of us expect to be able to tell our clients that we no longer support older browsers? Because it seems that large corporates will continue to run older browsers and even if google chrome frame can be installed without admin privileges (it's coming soon, currently in beta) we can't expect all users to be motivated to do this. I appreciate any thoughts.

I beleive we need to add the role "SAMBA File Server" to the server so we can mount the drive as a network share that we can access from Windows. Is it possible to add the SAMBA role to a SCO Unix operating system? Are there any gotchas or concerns? Thanks
