• Assembly Version Conflicts with What is Already Bound

  I'm running Microsoft LightSwitch Beta 1 and have been creating an application which has been going great, but then I tried debugging after making a few minor changes and received the following error: "Could not load file or assembly 'SW_Resources.Commom, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The requested assembly version conflicts with what is already bound in the app domain or specified in the manifest. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131053)" I've tried emptying my cache in Firefox and IE but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I did discover if I right-clicked on the Solution and changed the version from 0.1 to 1.0 then it works fine. I had changed it to 0.1 b/c I wanted to reflect that it wasn't a release version...any thoughts on how to get around this issue the right way?

• Top tips for designing GUIs?

  A while back I read (before I lost it) a great book called GUI Bloopers which was full of examples of bad GUI design but also full of useful tidbits like Don't call something a Dialog one minute and a Popup the next. What top tips would you give for designing/documenting a GUI? It would be particularly useful to hear about widgets you designed to cram readable information into as little screen real-estate as possible. I'm going to roll this off with one of my own: avoid trees (e.g. Swing's JTree) unless you really can't avoid it, or have a unbounded hierarchy of stuff. I have found that users don't find them intuitive and they are hard to navigate and filter. PS. I think this question differs from this one as I'm asking for generalist tips

• Is this ISession handled by the SessionScope - Castle ActiveRecord

  Can I do this? I have the following in my code: public class ARClass : ActiveRecordBase<ARClass> { ---SNIP--- public void DoStuff() { using (new SessionScope()) { holder.CreateSession(typeof(ARClass)).Lock(this, LockMode.None); ...Do some work... } } } So, as I'm sure you can guess, I am doing this so that I can access lazy loaded references in the object. It works great, however I am worried about creating an ISession like this and just dropping it. Does it get properly registered with the SessionScope and will the scope properly tare my ISession down when it is disposed of? Or do I need to do more to manage it myself?

• Need help using the Windows IP Helper API & ParseNetworString in C#.

  I'm attempting to rewrite some C# web service code that uses the Windows IP Helper API call "SendARP" to retreive a remote system's MAC address. SendARP works great - until you cross a network segment as Arp requests aren't routed. I've been looking at the "ParseNetworkString" documentation after happening across its existance on StackOverflow.   Hi All, I am very new to Blackberry development. I am trying to access the Blackberry Events (Calender) list. Currently, I am able to read the basic information from the event list. I am stuck in getting the info regarding the RepeatRule. • Would you use Code Bubbles?

  I've read this question mentioning Code Bubbles and I've watched their video presentation. The video is impressive, and does seem a little bit futuristic, but apparently it's somewhat real. But that kept me thinking... Would a developer really use such tool? We, as developers, are used to deal with code files, organizing them in directories, in one way or another, some common IDE (for those language that has them). It would be a great leap to use something like Code Bubbles, as they propose. I, personally, am not sure if I could work in such environment... although I think I would just need some adjusting... but I really don't see my mind working out the kinks of it. What are your thoughts on this?

• JS 2 minute countdown then execute a function?

  I'm not that great at Javascript, for the record! I DO know how to use ajax. I just need a bit of help. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to display a 5 minute countdown, and once the countdown hits zero, to run a function. I need to pass a variable to the function that needs to run. I tried SetInterval but this isn't exactly my strong suit. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can post the code I've got, but I would equate it to a gorilla fumbling in the dark at a typewriter!

• Is there a way to avoid IE7 quirks mode while rendering XML + CSS?

  I've got some DocBook documentation styled with a CSS xml-stylesheet declaration. It looks great in Firefox, but IE7 doesn't seem to understand the CSS child selectors (e.g. section > title { ... }). I think this is because IE is running in quirks mode to render this XML, and older versions of IE didn't support that CSS syntax at all. The pages I found on the web all seem to focus on HTML and XHTML doctypes and how IE will behave given various permutations of these values. I couldn't find any information about straight XML + CSS. Worse yet, it seems that random XML documents always end up in quirks mode, no matter what format or stylesheet directives they have. Is XML rendering in IE doomed to be IE5.5 compatible? Will I really have to rewrite my CSS?

• Diff tool that can compare sub-sections of files

  I'm looking for a diff tool that will allow me to compare just a sub-section of a file with a section of another file, or even of itself. Preferably eclipse based but will take all suggestions. Yes I know I can copy out the two sections into different files and compare those, but that is very tedious when you are trying to do a large amount of refactoring. Basically I'm trying to remove as much duplicated code as possible from a code base that is suffering from a great deal of ctrl-V 'inheritance' ;-) However the pasted parts have evolved apart a little over time.

• Generating PDF's via Delayed Job while maintaing a RESTful pattern.

  Hi, currently I am running a Rails app on Heroku, and everything is working great with exception of generating PDF documents that sometimes contain thousands of records. Heroku has a built-in timeout of 30 seconds, so if the request takes more than 30 seconds, it's abandoned. That's fine, since they offer delayed_job support built-in. However, all of the PDF's i generate follow a typical restful pattern. For instance, a request to "/posts.pdf" generates a pdf (using PRAWN and PRAWNTO) and it's delivered to the browser. So my basic question is, how do I create dynamically generated PDF's with delayed_job while maintaining the basic RESTful patterns Rail's so conveniently provides. Thanks.

• Shader vs Shader Material , papervision specific , general insight welcome.

  hello overflow. I asked this question on the pv3d forum and not a single person could, or cared to answer it. Im relatively new to 3d so i apologize if this is common sense to some. I have a sphere , in which i am applying a CellMaterial to. Looks great. I noticed that in the papervision sdk , there is also a CellShader. Should I be using this in congruence with the CellMaterial ? Should it be one or the other ? Is shader , a deprecated practice to Shader Material ? My initial thoughts were that the shader applies to the whole scene , while materials can be applied uniquely to objects. The documentation seems to show otherwise. What benefit if any could be gained by using both a CellShader and a CellMaterial ? id really love to get some ambient inclusion in there some how.

• Creating a jQuery plugin: best practices regarding functions' visibility?

I don't want the user to be able to go $("p").doSomething(), but I do need to use them. I could move everything in the myMethod function, but it would create a 100 lines long function and people would hate me for it. What's the best practices in this situation? Are there any great tutorials out there regarding this?

  We have a youtube player embedded in a plage in Mobile Safari and it works great. But we need to be able to launch the youtube player by a means other than user tapping the video itself, for various reasons. So I am trying to figure out what event to trigger in javascript to make it happen with no luck. None of the following appear to work. var vid = document.getElementById('vid'); vid.click(); vid.onclick(); vid.ontouchend(); vid.ontouchstart(); vid.focus(); I tried to find an event handler added to the embedded object with this snippet, but didn't find anything. for (var key in vid) { if (typeof vid[key] == 'function') console.log(key +': '+ vid[key]); } Is this just so wrapped up in a custom plugin there is no way?

• Extracting Information from Images

  What are some fast and somewhat reliable ways to extract information about images? I've been tinkering with openCV and this seems so far to be the best route plus it has Python bindings. So to be more specific I'd like to determine what I can about what's in an image. So for example the haar face detection and full body detection classifiers are great - now I can tell that most likely there are faces and / or people in the image as well as about how many. okay - what else - how about whether there are any buildings and if so what do they seem to be - huts, office buildings etc? Is there sky visible, grass, trees and so forth. From what I've read about training classifiers to detect objects, it seems like a rather laborious process 10,000 or so wrong images and 5,000 or so correct samples to train a classifier. I'm hoping that there are some decent ones around already instead of having to do this all myself for a bunch of different objects - or is there some other way to go about this sort of thing?

• Send Confirmation Email with Google Forms / Spreadsheets

  I know that Google Spreadsheets includes a mass mailout option with its MailApp.sendEmail function, but, as far as I know, it can only run once a form is opened, or by manually clicking "run". I have a Google form which includes an area for someone to put their email address. Is there a simple solution to send this data to its Google Spreadsheet and send it as a confirmation to the specified email address? It would be great if I could somehow incorporate MailApp.sendEmail into the form, instead of into the spreadsheet (which would be after the fact and manual, instead of instant and automatic). Also, note that I will be posting with jQuery. Any ideas?

• How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

  I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

  I've implemented a jquery counter script (count up from say 50 to 100 with different increments) that I found from this question: jQuery counter to count up to a target number The scripts works great except for in Internet Explorer 8 (and possibly other IE versions?). Here's an error message from IE with the URL to the creator of the script's demo. Message: 'undefined' is null or not an object Line: 32 Char: 17 Code: 0 URI: http://www.ulmanen.fi/stuff/counter.php I'm just wondering if anyone know how this can be fixed. I'm guessing it has to do with el.html() not finding any data but I can't really figure this out. • VB.NET 2.0 - StackOverflowException when using Thread Safe calls to Windows Forms Controls

  I have a Windows Forms app that, unfortunately, must make calls to controls from a second thread. I've been using the thread-safe pattern described on the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171728.aspx. Which has worked great in the past. The specific problem I am having now: I have a WebBrowser control and I'm attempting to invoke the WebBrowser.Navigate() method using this Thread-Safe pattern and as a result I am getting StackOverflow exceptions.   If I have a Customers table linked to an Orders table, and I want to delete a customer and its corresponding orders, then I can do: dataContext.Orders.DeleteAllOnSubmit(customer.Orders); dataContext.Customers.DeleteOnSubmit(customer); ...which is great. However, what if I also have an OrderItems table, and I want to delete the order items for each of the orders deleted? I can see how I could use DeleteAllOnSubmit to cause the deletion of all the order items for a single order, but how can I do it for all the orders?

• what to do with compile fcgi executable

  I have fastcgi installed and running. I downloaded a developerkit from fastcgi.com. It had some examples in it. One of the example files echos some stuff. It required a .libs and a .deps I put those folders along with a echo.fcgi file and into the webroot/cgi-bin. If I got to the echo.fcgi url, it works great. I created a simple c file that prints hello world. I compile it using gcc -Wall -o main -lfcgi main.c What do I do with it now? Does it require something like a perl script or php script to be executed. Or, should I just be able to put it in the webroot/cgi-bin folder and go to it's url?

  Hello everyone! I'm always really picky about memory leaks and I cannot understand why my garbage collected application leaks. My code is entirely memory-managed and it runs great without garbage collection, not a single leak. However, as soon as I turn on garbage collection it leaks! Just to prove a point, why does this leak in a garbage collected app? (place this dummy code at applicationDidFinishLaunching:) NSOpenPanel *panel = [NSOpenPanel openPanel]; [panel beginSheetModalForWindow:window completionHandler:^(NSInteger result) {NSBeep();}]; Also, is there a way to prevent leaks in apps (garbage collected or otherwise) that use Scripting Bridge? it seems as if they all leak, even the sample ones in xcode. • How can I create a collection of references in C#

  Ok I am having a cross language hiccup. In C# with it's great collections like List and I have: a Map class with properties of: List<byte[]> Images; List<Tile> Tiles; a Tile Class of: byte[] ImageData; int X; int Y; Now I want to add an image to the Map class and have the ImageData property of the Tile Classes to "reference" it. I have discovered I can't just assign it Images[0]. You can't have a reference to an object of a List. My fix was to create a Dictionary. Is this the best way or can I somehow have a "pointer" to a collection of objects?
