  • Should I use events in this case?

    I'm creating a video player, like a custom YouTube player. All of the GUI elements (progress bar, video player, play button, ...) are different classes, but I obviously need them to communicate. When the progress bar is clicked, or the slider is moved, it needs to send a "seek(x)" command to the video player. Similarly, the video player needs to update the progressbar every frame. Currently I'm doing this by having almost all elements have a link to each other. So when I create the progress bar, I'm telling it where the video player is. But after a while this becomes more and more complicated, and I'm wondering if events would be a better way to do this. Or a main controller class that has all the connections. What should I do?

    The other day I used apt-get install python-pyexiv2 on my ubuntu server, but it seems to have given me an old version. It's not compatible with the code I wrote in my local development environment so I'd like to update it. I downloaded the latest tar.gz from the website, extracted it and ran scons as per the readme. But it will not build, I get the error src/exiv2wrapper.hpp:32:29: error: exiv2/preview.hpp: No such file or directory I've also user apt-get to install libboost-python-dev and libexiv2-dev Can anyone help me on this?

  • Detect if a hudson build is manually or schedule (periodically) invoked

    Ive set up deployment in hudson. SVN Build copy to production. I need to set up a schedule build to test for build error which is running every hour or so. What i dont want is the schedules builds to deploy to production. Is it posible to detect, in nant, if the current build is a scheduled build or a manually started build. Or should i create a seperate project for the schedule build?

  • I think "/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build" points to incorrect folder

    I compile/create my own deb packages of kernel with: make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd --append-to-version=$version --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers But when I install both packages, in /lib/modules/(*name_kernel_compiled*) it creates two links, sources and build, pointing to folder with sources, from I've compiled. sources link is correct but build should point to /usr/src/linux-(version kernel), don't you think?

  • Series On Embedded Development (Part 2) - Build-Time Optionality

    In this entry on embedded development, I'm going to discuss build-time optionality (BTO). BTO is the ability to subset your software at build-time so you only use what is needed. BTO typically pertains more to software providers rather then developers of final products. For example, software providers ship source products, frameworks or platforms which are used by developers to build other products. If you provide a source product, you probably don't have to do anything to support BTO as the developers using your source will only use the source they need to build their product. If you provide a framework, then there are some things you can do to support BTO. Say you provide a Java framework which supports audio and video. If you provide this framework in a single JAR, then developers who only want audio are forced to ship their product with the video portion of your framework even though they aren't using it. In this case, support providing the framework in separate JARs...break the framework into an audio JAR and a video JAR and let the users of your framework decide which JARs to include in their product. Sometimes this is as simple as packaging, but if, for example, the video functionality is dependent on the audio functionality, it may require coding work to cleanly separate the two. BTO can also work at install-time, and this is sometimes overlooked. Let's say your building a phone application which can use Near Field Communications (NFC) if it's available on the phone, but it doesn't require NFC to work. Typically you'd write one app for all phones (saving you time)...both those that have NFC and those that don't, and just use NFC if it's there. However, for better efficiency, you can detect at install-time if the phone supports NFC and not install the NFC portion of your app if the phone doesn't support NFC. This requires that you write the app so it can run without the optional NFC code and that you write your install app so it can detect NFC and do the right thing at install-time. Supporting install-time optionality will save persistent footprint on the phone, something your customers will appreciate, your app "neighbors" will appreciate, and that you'll appreciate when they save static footprint for you.   • In C#, what thread will Events be handled in?

    Hi, I have attempted to implement a producer/consumer pattern in c#. I have a consumer thread that monitors a shared queue, and a producer thread that places items onto the shared queue. The producer thread is subscribed to receive data...that is, it has an event handler, and just sits around and waits for an OnData event to fire (the data is being sent from a 3rd party api). When it gets the data, it sticks it on the queue so the consumer can handle it. When the OnData event does fire in the producer, I had expected it to be handled by my producer thread. But that doesn't seem to be what is happening. The OnData event seems as if it's being handled on a new thread instead! Is this how .net always works...events are handled on their own thread? Can I control what thread will handle events when they're raised? What if hundreds of events are raised near-simultaneously...would each have its own thread? Thank in advance! Ben

    The problem is very simple. An object needs to notify some events that might be of interest to observers. When I sat to validate a design that I cooked up now in Ruby just to validate it.. I find myself stumped as to how to implement the object events. In .Net this would be a one-liner.. .Net also does handler method signature verification,etc. e.g. // Object with events public delegate void HandlerSignature(int a); public event HandlerSignature MyEvent; public event HandlerSignature AnotherCriticalEvent; // Client MyObject.MyEvent += new HandlerSignature(MyHandlerMethod); // MyHandlerMethod has same signature as delegate Is there an EventDispatcher module or something that I am missing that I can strap on to a Ruby class ? Hoping for an answer that plays along with Ruby's principle of least surprise. An event would be the name of the event plus a queue of [observer, methodName] objects that need to be invoked when the event takes place.

    I've been learning Mootools, but I'm having problems firing custom events. I'm sure it must be something simple, but I can't see it for the life of me. I wrote a simple class to nudge some list items using Fx.Tween.     OOW 2013 Summary for Fusion Middleware Architects & Administrators by Simon Haslam This September during Oracle OpenWorld 2013 the weather in San Francisco, as you see can from the photo, was exceptionally sunny. The dramatic final few days of the Americas Cup sailing competition, being held every day in the bay, coincided with the conference and meant that there was almost a holiday feel to the whole event. Here's my annual round-up of what I think was most interesting at OpenWorld 2013 for Fusion Middleware architects and administrators; I hope you find it useful and if you think I've missed something please add a comment! WebLogic and Cloud Application Foundation (CAF) The big WebLogic release of the year has already happened a few months ago with 12.1.2 so I won't duplicate that here. Will Lyons discussed the WebLogic and Coherence roadmap which essentially is that 12.1.3 will probably be released to coincide with SOA 12c next year and that 12.1.4, the next feature-rich WebLogic release, is more likely to be in 2015. This latter release will probably include full Java EE 7 support, have enhancements for multi-tenancy and further auto-scaling features to support increased density (i.e. more WebLogic usage for the same amount of hardware). There's a new Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder (OVAB) out already and an Oracle Traffic Director (OTD) 12c release round the corner too. Also of relevance to administrators is that Oracle has increased the support lifetime for Fusion Middleware 11g (e.g. WebLogic 10.3.6) so that Premier Support will now run to the end of 2018 and Extended Support until 2021 - this should remove any Oracle-driven pressure to upgrade at least. Java Mission Control Java Mission Control (JMC) is the HotSpot Java 7 version of JRockit 6 Mission Control, a very nice performance monitoring tool from Oracle's BEA acquisition. Flight Recorder is a feature built into the JVM which records diagnostic events into, typically, a circular buffer which can then be used for historical analysis, particularly in the case of a JVM crash or hang. It's been available separately for WebLogic only for perhaps a year now but, more significantly, it now includes JVM events and was bundled in with JDK7 Update 40 a few weeks ago. I attended a couple of interesting Java One sessions on JMC/Flight Recorder and have to say it's looking really good - it has all the previous JRMC features except for memory leak detector, plus some enhancements around operative sets and ECID filtering I think. Marcus also showed how you could add your own events into flight recorder by building your own event class - they are then available for graphing alongside all the other events in JMC. This uses a currently an unsupported/undocumented API, but it's also the same one that WebLogic uses for WLDF events so I imagine it is stable. I'm not sure quite whether this would be useful to custom applications, as opposed to infrastructure services or ISV packaged applications, but it was a very nice demonstration. I've been testing JMC / FR enabling on several environments recently and my confidence is growing - it feels robust and I think could very soon be part of my standard builds.   • Not all events appear in Nagios history (archive)

    in the "Host & Service history" of my check_mk interface I can see various events, but a lot of events are missing. On the default interface at "View Alert History For This Service" or in the logfiles /var/log/nagios/archives/*.log the same issue: I can see many events of the last days, but not all of them. In the /etc/nagios/nagios.cfg the options log_event_handlers, log_initial_status and log_passive_checks are set to 0, the other log_... options are set to 1. I don't think that any of these options causing the problem that not all events are logged. What could cause this problem?
