  • RAID Read/Write Speed Gradually Slows

    - by Nalandial
This is actually a server at home, but I felt it was sufficiently complicated as to not have it on SuperUser and could easily apply to a professional situation. I have a file server running Debian (Lenny 5.0.4), and it has an XFS LVM on top of a RAID 5 with the OS drive separate from the RAID. It's also running apache, samba, and postgresql. Side note: before anyone asks, I'm using RAID5 because I get more bang for the buck on raw drive space, and still have some fault tolerance. When the box is started (via shutdown or reboot) reading/writing to it's samba share maxes out the gigabit network connection. Over time, this slowly degrades eventually becoming < 10MB/s; however, when rebooted the speed returns to maxing out the connection. Why is this happening, and is there a way to 'clear' out whatever's causing it without taking the server down? Thanks in advance!

  • Sftp via shell - how it is possible

    - by Tomasz Zielinski
(Moved from StackOverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4589725/sftp-via-shell-how-it-is-possible) How is it possible for tools like http://mysecureshell.sourceforge.net/ to provide SFTP access by merely specifying them as shell by typing: usermod -s /bin/MySecureShell myuser ? I'm on Debian Lenny, with default sshd/OpenSSH. Is this e.g. a feature of SSH protocol that allows user shell to handle sftp commands? I can't wrap my head around this because usually OpenSSH needs sftp-server module (or the internal one in newer versions) - and this makes me think that sftp commands don't even hit the shell and are handled earlier or by different code path..

  • Unmounted root partition

    - by Jack
My server running Debian lenny has just had a power cut recently and its come back up with the root partition in read only mode. I tried to remount the filesystem in read write mode with mount -n -o remount,rw / which then gave the output mount: block device /dev/hda1 is write-protected, mounting read-only. But now the root filesystem isn't mounted at all so I can't run anything to mount the partition again or any other command for that matter such as shutdown because /bin/ isn't there. Is there anything I can do remotely?

  • how to limit upload bandwidth per user in linux?

    - by Gihan Lasita
Can anyone provide the tc command to limit upload bandwidth per user in Debian Lenny? I found that to mark packets per user with iptables I can use the following command iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp -m owner --uid-owner testuser -j MARK --set-mark 500 but I have no idea how to use tc update by running following commands, i managed to limit testuser upload bandwidth to 10Mbit iptables -t mangle -N HTB_OUT iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING -j HTB_OUT iptables -t mangle -A HTB_OUT -j MARK --set-mark 30 iptables -t mangle -A HTB_OUT -m owner --uid-owner testuser -j MARK --set-mark 10 tc qdisc replace dev eth0 root handle 1: htb default 30 tc class replace dev eth0 parent 1: classid 1:1 htb rate 10Mbit burst 5k tc class replace dev eth0 parent 1:1 classid 1:10 htb rate 10Mbit ceil 10Mbit tc qdisc replace dev eth0 parent 1:10 handle 10: sfq perturb 10 tc filter add dev eth0 parent 1:0 prio 0 protocol ip handle 10 fw flowid 1:10 now the problem is, i do not want to limit testuser's FTP bandwidth but by running above commands FTP speed also limited to 10Mbit. • open-iscsi does not login into targets on boot

    - by Creshal
We have a Debian Lenny server with open-iscsi that's configured to log into a target automatically: hostname:~# grep \\.startup /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf node.startup = automatic hostname:~# grep \\.startup /etc/iscsi/nodes/iqn..../the.correct.ip.address\,port node.startup = automatic node.conn[0].startup = automatic hostname:~# If I issue a restart of open-iscsi via init.d, it works fine. But if I reboot the machine, iscsi starts, but does not even search for targets. I have to manually restart it before it works. Any ideas how to make it find the target on boot?

  • VMWare Server :: VM set to 2gb RAM but vmware process shows 100mb physical, 1900mb virtual

    - by brad
I've set up a VMWare instance to run CastIron Integration Appliance. I allocated 2gb of memory to the instance, assuming it would take this as physical memory (my server has 8gb total). When I view top however on the server, the vmware-vmx process has about 100m Resident memory and 1900m Virtual. Running CastIron it reports that the appliance often hits 50% memory usage. Does this mean I'm using 900mb of harddrive space as memory? I wanted VMWare to use 2gb of physical memory, no swap. Can anyone tell me how to achieve this? Setup Debian Lenny 5.0.3 VMWare Server 2.0.2

  • How to change password schema for Dovecot user authentication for an already existing mail server

    - by deb_lrnr
Hello, I have an email server setup on Debian Lenny with Postfix, Dovecot, SASL and MySQL. Currently, the password scheme in my dovecot-sql.conf file is set to: CRYPT default_pass_scheme = CRYPT I would like to globally change the scheme to something stronger like SSHA, or MD5-CRYPT and re-hash all passwords with SSHA. What is the best way to do this? The Dovecot wiki mentions how passwords that don't follow the default scheme defined in dovecot-sql.conf can be prefixed with "{ssha}password", but I couldn't see anything regarding changing an already-existing scheme to a new one for all passwords that are already in the database. Thanks for your help!

  • domain works randomly

    - by mthenw
Hi, I have problem with configuring bind9 on debian (lenny) server. Generaly speaking everything is working ok but sometimes I get 404 on few domains (eg. 4stopnie.com but after few refreshes in browser site loads) or I can't validate site with validator.w3.org (error '500 Can't connect to 4stopnie.com:80 (Bad hostname '4stopnie.com')'). Domains were moved from other server. After moving I changed serial number in zone file. $ttl 600 @ IN SOA ns.wpoznaniu.info. xxx.4stopnie.com. • Daemonize() issues on Debian

    - by djTeller
Hi, I'm currently writing a multi-process client and a multi-treaded server for some project i have. The server is a Daemon. In order to accomplish that, i'm using the following daemonize() code: static void daemonize(void) { pid_t pid, sid; /* already a daemon */ if ( getppid() == 1 ) return; /* Fork off the parent process */ pid = fork(); if (pid < 0) { exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } /* If we got a good PID, then we can exit the parent process. */ if (pid > 0) { exit(EXIT_SUCCESS); } /* At this point we are executing as the child process */ /* Change the file mode mask */ umask(0); /* Create a new SID for the child process */ sid = setsid(); if (sid < 0) { exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } /* Change the current working directory. This prevents the current directory from being locked; hence not being able to remove it. */ if ((chdir("/")) < 0) { exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } /* Redirect standard files to /dev/null */ freopen( "/dev/null", "r", stdin); freopen( "/dev/null", "w", stdout); freopen( "/dev/null", "w", stderr); } int main( int argc, char *argv[] ) { daemonize(); /* Now we are a daemon -- do the work for which we were paid */ return 0; } I have a strange side effect when testing the server on Debian (Ubuntu). The accept() function always fail to accept connections, the pid returned is -1 I have no idea what causing this, since in RedHat & CentOS it works well. When i remove the call to daemonize(), everything works well on Debian, when i add it back, same accept() error reproduce. I've been monitring the /proc//fd, everything looks good. Something in the daemonize() and the Debian release just doesn't seem to work. (Debian GNU/Linux 5.0, Linux 2.6.26-2-286 #1 SMP) Any idea what causing this? Thank you

  • PHP Error / Mk-livestatus in Nagvis

    - by tod
I have Nagios and Nagvis installed via Debian packages, but when I run Nagvis and try to get into the "General Configuration" menu I get this error Error: (0) Array to string conversion (/usr/share/nagvis/share/server/core/classes/WuiViewEditMainCfg.php:126) #0 /usr/share/nagvis/share/server/core/classes/WuiViewEditMainCfg.php(126): nagvisExceptionErrorHandler(8, 'Array to string...', '/usr/share/nagv...', 126, Array) #1 /usr/share/nagvis/share/server/core/classes/WuiViewEditMainCfg.php(44): WuiViewEditMainCfg->getFields() #2 /usr/share/nagvis/share/server/core/classes/CoreModMainCfg.php(56): WuiViewEditMainCfg->parse() #3 /usr/share/nagvis/share/server/core/functions/index.php(120): CoreModMainCfg->handleAction() #4 /usr/share/nagvis/share/server/core/ajax_handler.php(63): require('/usr/share/nagv...') #5 {main} I'm also having an issue with backends in Nagvis. check-mk-livestatus is installed, but I get this error when hovering over items: Problem (backend: live_1): Unable to connect to the /var/lib/nagios3/rw/live in backend live_1: Connection refused Or when trying to add things: Unable to fetch data from backend - falling back to input field. /var/lib/nagios3/rw/ exists, but there is no "live" file. I'm really not sure what is going on, especially since these were all Debian packages... Here is the most relevant part of the nagvis.ini.php: ; ---------------------------- ; Backend definitions ; ---------------------------- ; Example definition of a livestatus backend. ; In this case the backend_id is live_1 ; The path /usr/local/nagios/var/rw has to exist [backend_live_1] backendtype="mklivestatus" ; The status host can be used to prevent annoying timeouts when a backend is not ; reachable. This is only useful in multi backend setups. ; ; It works as follows: The assumption is that there is a "local" backend which ; monitors the host of the "remote" backend. When the remote backend host is ; reported as UP the backend is queried as normal. ; When the remote backend host is reported as "DOWN" or "UNREACHABLE" NagVis won't ; try to connect to the backend anymore until the backend host gets available again. ; ; The statushost needs to be given in the following format: ; "<backend_id>:<hostname>" -> e.g. "live_2:nagios" ;statushost="" socket="unix:/var/lib/nagios3/rw/live" There is nothing relating to 'backends' or 'mklivestatus' in /var/log/nagios3/nagios.log Any help would be much appreciated

  • Authenticate Teamcity against LDAP using TLS

    - by aseq
I am running a 6.5 version of Teamcity on a Debian Squeeze server and I use OpenLDAP to authenticate users. I know I can use SSL to be able to use encrypted password authentication, however this has been deprecated by the OpenLDAP developers, see: http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/605.html I would like to know if there is a way to configure LDAP authentication in Teamcity to use TLS on port 389. I can't find anything about it here: http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/TCD65/LDAP+Integration Or here: http://therightstuff.de/2009/02/02/How-To-Set-Up-Secure-LDAP-Authentication-With-TeamCity.aspx

  • Repair OS From Within VMWare

    - by Zurahn
I've got a Debian installation in an installation of ESXi that won't boot due to the deletion of a few system files that need to be restored. It would be preferable to at least access the files on the instance, if a repair is impossible. To complicate matters, there isn't enough room on the drive to upload a full distribution to boot from with VMWare disk utility. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

  • xterm not wrapping text properly

    - by mulllhausen
I'm configuring both my gnome-terminal and xterm columns (i still haven't picked which of these I will be using) and I have a couple of issues I would like to fix: the typing area seems to be smaller (fewer columns) than the display area the typed text is not wrapping to the next line when it reaches the end - it just continues back around on the same line, overwriting the prompt (i have set a custom bash prompt with PS1 in case this is relevant) $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Debian Description: Debian GNU/Linux 7.1 (wheezy) Release: 7.1 Codename: wheezy $ echo $TERM xterm $ stty -a [peter@pc ~] $ stty -a speed 38400 baud; rows 52; columns 126; line = 0; intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol = M-^?; eol2 = M-^?; swtch = M-^?; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W; lnext = ^V; flush = ^O; min = 1; time = 0; -parenb -parodd cs8 hupcl -cstopb cread -clocal -crtscts -ignbrk brkint -ignpar -parmrk -inpck -istrip -inlcr -igncr icrnl ixon -ixoff -iuclc ixany imaxbel iutf8 opost -olcuc -ocrnl onlcr -onocr -onlret -ofill -ofdel nl0 cr0 tab0 bs0 vt0 ff0 isig icanon iexten echo echoe echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop -echoprt echoctl echoke $[peter@mine ~] $ # the column width only goes up to here ------------------------------------------------> the results are identical in both the xterm and in gnome-terminal 3.4.1.1 and as you can see, the output of the stty -a command goes right up to the edge of the screen, while the typing does not go that far. I have found that I can get the desired result by setting the columns to a very large number, eg: $ stty cols 1800 this fixes both problems. Is it the right way to go about solving this problem? Will this "break" any of the output from programs? So far I have tried top and stty -a and these seem OK. more info as requested in the comments i found that if i cat some input into a file then the columns actually strech the full width of the terminal window: [peter@mine applications] $ cat > /tmp/asd aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq qqqq does this imply that it is actually bash that is restricting the number of columns and not the terminal? if so then how to alter the number of columns in bash?

  • Limit rate of outgoing UDP packets per second

    - by tim82
Hi, since Teamspeak version 3 sends lots of packets per user and our provider is getting problems with his infrastructure above 20.000 packets per second we have to limit it that our servers are not going to be shut down. Red a lot about iptables but was not able to find the right rules. Could you give me an advise how to manage that the server is not going to send more than 19k packets per seconds? We are running on debian 4 Thanks in Advance Tim

  • Machine check events logged

    - by GoldenNewby
In /var/log/messages, this error occurred: Sep 19 13:18:15 wdc kernel: [2772302.630416] Machine check events logged Shortly there after, the entire server became unresponsive. This is in the log of the Dom0 for a Xen Server (running the latest version on Debian Squeeze). Can anyone shed some light on what this error means? Should I be ordering new hardware? Edit: Also, it seems to imply it logged something, where can I find that?

  • KVM network bridge and public static IP for both host and guests

    - by Javier Martinez
I have a Debian Server with 4 public static addresses. There is a KVM guest (also Debian) installed and running. • KVM network bridge and public static IP for both host and guests

    - by Javier Martinez
    I have a Debian Server with 4 public static addresses. There is a KVM guest (also Debian) installed and running. What I want is to give the guest an IP of the host, so that both machines have public IPs. IP 1: 188.165.A.B IP 2: 178.33.CCC.D IP 3: 178.33.CCC.E IP 4: 178.33.CCC.F What should I do to have connection for host and guest ? This is network conf: # ifconfig br0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e8:40:f2:0a:cc:28 inet addr:188.165.A.B Bcast:188.165.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::ea40:f2ff:fe0a:cc28/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:3618 errors:0 dropped:4 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:4853 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:599562 (585.5 KiB) TX bytes:1693443 (1.6 MiB) eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e8:40:f2:0a:cc:28 inet6 addr: fe80::ea40:f2ff:fe0a:cc28/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:4274 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:4879 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:720045 (703.1 KiB) TX bytes:1715641 (1.6 MiB) Interrupt:20 Memory:fe500000-fe520000 eth0:0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e8:40:f2:0a:cc:28 inet addr:178.33.CCC.D Bcast:178.33.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:20 Memory:fe500000-fe520000 eth0:1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e8:40:f2:0a:cc:28 inet addr:178.33.CCC.E Bcast:178.33.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:20 Memory:fe500000-fe520000 eth0:2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e8:40:f2:0a:cc:28 inet addr:178.33.CCC.F Bcast:178.33.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:20 Memory:fe500000-fe520000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:27932 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:27932 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1820862 (1.7 MiB) TX bytes:1820862 (1.7 MiB) vnet0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr fe:54:00:87:40:ec inet6 addr: fe80::fc54:ff:fe87:40ec/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:18 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:204 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:500 RX bytes:1452 (1.4 KiB) TX bytes:16958 (16.5 KiB) #route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default aa.bb.cc.eu 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 br0 188.165.255.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 br0 # brctl show bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces br0 8000.e840f20acc28 no eth0 vnet0 There is no firewall enabled and DNS is configured properly.
