• Computer refuses to POST

  Computer refuses to POST. What it will do is the fan spins up, and the lights come on on the motherboard, but other then that it just sits there and laughs in my face! Here is what I have done... I have tried 2 different video cards, both known to work, 4 different sticks of RAM in all four ram slots, 2 processors (known to work), and 2 power supplies (known to work). The only constant is the motherboard... The Motherboard is a Asus m3a3-mvp deluxe. Anyone have any other ideas? Also, I have bread boarded it to make sure there where no shorts (taken everything out of the case and tried again).

• Overheating on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron Q17R with two graphic cards and I noticed that it is overheating. I installed Bumblebee, Jupiter and Flashblock, and I followed this guide as well, but it still got up to 74C. Is there anything more I can do? It still doesn't really seem to be working well and the fan keeps spinning really fast. After performing the following test: sensors in the terminal, this is what I got: Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +75.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +75.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +68.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 0: +68.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) Core 1: +65.0°C (high = +86.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) it doesn't look good.

• Full computer freeze with audio stuttering after playing games for a period of time

  I've been having a problem with my computer freezing completely when playing games like LA Noire or SW:TOR (yay early access!). Basically, what happens is I will play for around an hour or so (depending on the game) and when the freeze happens, the entire computer locks up and any audio that was being played glitches out and stutters broken-record style (only much shorter. Very techno). I think it might be heat related and thought it might be my video card overheating, so I have been setting my video card (Nvidia Geforce 260GTX 216-core) fan to highest setting, but that has little to no effect. Now I'm beginning to think it's either my FSB or CPU overheating. Can anyone provide some insight or similar experiences? I'm really at a loss and don't wanna damage my rig beyond repair.

• Disable CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] to produce accented variations

  After an unknown config change, CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] has started producing common accented versions of [LETTER]. I'm not a big fan of this arrangement, seeing as I've memorized all my favourite ALT + [NUMPAD SEQUENCE] references and was used to using CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] for various other application-specific commands in my text editor. The prominent result from my searching suggests that this has something to do with a switch to an 'international keyboard', and says this can be removed in the control panel or toggled by hitting ALT + SHIFT, but I can't get my system to confirm this, and the solutions (or close approximations thereof) don't work. Specifically, I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings and switched the override for default input method from 'language list' to English and I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Language options and made sure that I only have my one input method (UK). Other than that I'm not quite sure where to look. Any ideas?

• LDAP loginShell on platforms with different paths

  I'm using LDAP to deal with users and authentication across my network. I'm now adding FreeBSD hosts and have hit a problem with login shells. on Linux, shells tend to be in /bin/$shellname, so setting my login shell in LDAP to /bin/zsh works perfectly. on FreeBSD, /bin/zsh doesnt exist, I need to use /usr/local/bin/zsh. is there a solution to this? I imagine I might be able to make some sort of login-shell.sh script that LDAP passes out as the "shell" and then use the script to determine the actual shell for the user, but I'm not a fan of that idea. I'm using Debian and FreeBSD, both with a standard OpenLDAP/PAM/nss setup. edit: it looks like using /bin/sh and adding an exec $shell to .profile would "work", but that doesnt scale very well.

• Upgraded to a GTX 580 - no video signal on boot

  I have: New Corsair 550w PSU (should be more than enough) AsRock H61M u3s3 mobo (with latest updated BIOS) Just replaced my faithful HD 7790 GPU with a refurbished EVGA GTX 580 1.5GB. When I boot, it sounds like the PC boots to windows, and the 580's fan is spinning, but I can't get any video signal from the card. Old card and integrated graphics still work fine (when I replace and use those instead). I am using the DVI ports on the card with a DVI-VGA adapter until I can get my hands on a mini HDMI adapter tomorrow. Anyone ever heard of a GPU needed something special to make the VGA signal work? Hold down a key on startup or something? I can't even find a manual for this card.

• Acer Aspire 5532 crashes with no warning

  I have an Acer Aspire 5532. I don't have more specs off the top of my head but from what I've looked up it has all the factory stock stuff in. My keyboard is completely shot and doesn't work at all. It was working fine for quite a while, however I go to get on it Thanksgiving night and all of a sudden it just crashes with no warning. I try to restart it and it beeps 3 times with about 15 seconds in between each beep. After that it will go to start up and get to the log in screen, and about 3 minutes later it will crash again with absolutely no warning. The same thing happens every time I try to start it up. I've taken it completely apart and cleaned the fan and all the airways. I made sure all the connections are good (or at least all the ones that I can get to above the mother board), put it back together and I get the same problem.

• Opening notebooks

  I have a Compaq CQ40 which has a defective CPU fan, it seems unable to cool the notebook enough at this time, it is constantly running, and if you move the pc up/down to look under it, it makes some sort of chainsaw sound. I have tried to take out all the screws underneath, but I still have a problem with the plastic cover on the above; I am afraid I might break it since it seem to be connected with plastic clips underneath. I have fixed notebooks before, but this one seem new, how can I open the plastic cover above without breaking it? Any advice, tips and tricks would be so nice to have, not only for this notebook, but any future notebook also I might need to repair. It would be nice if anyone here knows a place with video tutorials on this subject as well.

• Laptop wont start after BIOS update

  I have a HP Probook 4540s i recently update its BIOS from HP's site after the installation the notebook re started but since after that there is no display i waited for an hour until the battery ran off after when i plugged in its same: Capslock is contunously blinking Fan is running faster than the usual speed i can tell this from the sound And no display i waited for more than hour for any response but no gain. Searched Internet and find out that alot people fails to update their BIOS in HP laptop i dont know why official HP sites has such updates even avaialble. Is there a way i can reset the BIOS, Hard reset, through USB of something i have another PC over which i can download anything if its required? Can anyone please help.

• No Cure for a Slow Computer?

  I have a laptop with the following specs: 2.2gHz dual-core processor. 4gb of DDR2 Ram. 180gb HDD space. I have tried everything. I have reinstalled the OS. Installed Ubuntu with Lubuntu, LXDE, Gnome Classic, Unity 2D desktop. I have even tried downgrading to XP with all non-critical processes and services turned off. Even with the most stripped down version of Ubuntu it heats up and the fan starts churning. I'm out of ideas. I have tried everything. If you have any tips, please help. :'(

• Is there a way to get x-mouse-type scrolling under the cursor for child windows within one program window?

  I've been messing with X-mouse setups, to enable scrolling for whatever is under the cursor, regardless of whether it has the focus or not. I've found several ways to get this to work between various 'parent' windows (Win7's built-in mouse options, WizMouse, etc), but I've found nothing that will do the same thing with (for example) several child windows with spreadsheets, open at the same time in one parent Excel window. I have the spreadsheets set up so that two are visible in the window at the same time, but I always have to click on either one to scroll it up and down. I'd love to be able to scroll these just by moving the mouse and doing the scroll, without the extra focus-change-click. I am not a big fan of running separate parent windows for each spreadsheet, which I realize would be something of a workaround. I'd rather keep the single parent Excel window, but still have X-mouse functionality within it. Anyone know of any way to achieve this? I'd call it "XMouse for Child Windows".

  I've been a long-time Nokia fan, but finally succumbed to the Samsung Galaxy S3's amazing screen, & Android's Open community. One feature I use a lot (about a hundred times a day...) is Nokia PC Suite's ability to send SMS via the phone. It: Uses my phone's contact list. Notifies me when I get an sms. Allows me to send SMS using my PC's keyboard. Essentially turning SMS into just another IM medium I use on the PC. How will I do this with the Samsung Galaxy S3 + Windows 7?

• My CPU hits 100°C... Help me!

  The safe limit for processors is typically 50°C or so, but I have found that my CPU likes to do up to 100°C. I have got these readings from SpeedFan 4.42. I have a Intel Quad Core unclocked. I am using the standard intel fan with heatsink that came with the prossesor My case is a Cooler Master and I have two fans installed on the case. I took the side off to see if that helped. It lowered the temp be 3C. I don't really want to blow the processor and I don't know how to cool it down.

• Sony Vaio Sleep Mode

  I have a problem with the sleep mode on Sony Vaio F Series and Windows 7 x64. If I wake it up by opening the lid and pressing power button everything works fine. However, if I wake it up on some other way (e.g. move the mouse), power light turns green and fan starts spinning, but LCD is dark and I cannot use keyboard (well, actually there is no sign that anyting works). Only thing I can do is to reboot it by pressing power button. Does anyone know what could be the problem?

• Is it possible to power off a PCIe video card/slot? (eg. hot-plug)

  I'm looking at building a system that supports VT-d so I can pass through a high powered loud video card to a Xen/KVM/whatever VM (host will be Linux based). However, when I'm not using the VM I want to turn the video card off so its fan does not run. The card will not be used when the VM isn't running. Anyone know if this is possible? The PCI-Express hot-plug specification allows cutting power to specific slots but I have never heard of anyone doing it with a video card and my searches for information have turned up nothing.

• Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

  I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

  Aircel, one of the leading wireless mobile services provider of India has just announced that iPhone 4S will be available to its customers on November 25. You can start pre-booking the phone from November 18 through Aircel website or walking into an Aircel showroom near you. My multiple calls to Aircel customer care division were no use to get the details on the price information. Three times the call got disconnected before a customer care executive tried fetching the details on price and models. We hear from BGR India blog that iPhone 4S price is going start at Rs. 40,000 for a 16GB model and may go up to Rs. 50,000 for a 64 GB model. Airtel, another leading mobile service provider in India, who sells iPhone in India is not sure when they are going to start offering iPhone 4S to its customer. I reached customer care regarding the iPhone 4S and they don’t have any details to offer at the moment. It’s good to see Apple releasing iPhone 4S to India markets just after couple of months of International release. Apple was earlier criticized for releasing iPhone 2, iPhone 3G in India almost an year after the international launch while companies like Nokia release their flagship models just after weeks of international launch.   Think about this: By reading this blog, you and I are connected. We have this blog and its topics in common, so there's a chance we have other things in common as well. In any relationship there is a degree of trust and influence. If you trust me, at least in terms of particular subjects, then I have some influence over you. If I buy an iPad, then there's an opportunity for me to influence your possible purchase of an over-hyped tablet that you don't really need. So what could a retailer do with this? Retailers that have fans and followers should assume that the friends of those fans and followers are more susceptible to their marketing efforts. If I'm a fan of Apple, then Apple will be more successful marketing to my friends than marketing to random people. Intuitively that makes sense, at least to me. Companies like 33Across and Pursway are already putting this theory into practice, and achieving some interesting results. Jeff Jarvis, who by-the-way is speaking at CrossTalk this year, has been discussing the power of influencers in social networks. In his blog he rails against marketers and says "messages and influence aren't the future of marketing; conversations and relationships are." Valuable messages will be passed on because they are valuable, not because someone has the power to exert influence. True enough, but that won't stop the efforts underway to leverage social networks for more targeted advertising. From a business perspective, this sounds like a goldmine to me; on a personal level, it's a bit creepy.

Even though there are not many new features in Firefox 5, many of us would like to install the latest version for being up to date with the cutting edge web browser. If you upgraded to Firefox 5 and found few of your favourite Firefox plugins are disabled as they are not compatible with the new version here is what you need to downgrade it to Firefox 4. Downgrading to Firefox 4 is simple, you just need to get the latest installer and run it. Here are detailed instructions: 1. Point your web browser to the FTP servers of Mozilla that hosts the latest version of Firefox 4. Here are the links to various various OS flavours of Firefox: Windows 32 Bit, Apple Mac, Linux – i686 or Linux – x86 64 Bit. 2.  Then navigate to the desired language (direct links for Firefox Windows UK & USA English versions) 3.  Download the setup file 4.
