• How do we install Unity-2D and dependencies offline?

  We have installed 11.04 32-bit on an old machine that has no internet connection and with a graphics card that is not suitable for running Compiz or Unity. Still, we would like to run Unity-2D on this machine. We are aware of answers to this Question. Sadly Keryx will not run on 11.04 32-bit because of unmet dependencies. Building an offline repository is not an option because of limited storage capacity. Is there any convenient other way to find, download, install, and eventually update unity-2 and all dependencies (preferably from an OS independent download path)?

  I've been programming in C++ for a while now, but mostly thinks centered around the low-level features of C++. By that I mean mostly working with pointers and raw arrays. I think this behavior is known as using C++ as C with classes despite me only having tried C recently for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised how languages like C# and Java hide these details away in convenient standard library classes like Dictionaries and Lists. I'm aware that the C++ standard library has many convenience containers like vectors, maps and strings as well and C++11 only adds to this by having std:: array and ranged loops. How do I best learn to make use of these modern language features and which are suitable for which moments? Is it correct that software engineering in C++ nowadays I'd mostly free of manual memory management? Lastly, which compiler should I use to make the most of the new standard? Visual Studio has excellent debugging tools, but even VS2012 seems to have terrible C++11 support.

  I've made a script that preforms various system tasks, that I run regularly, but I have to use sudo to run the script, despite the fact that I own it because it runs root privileged commands. How can I add make sudo let me run this one file without having to enter my password every time I run it? I know that there are questions regarding running commands without a password, but I wasn't able to find one on running a file without a password. I am aware of the security risks, but I'm at home on a computer that I trust.

I am confident that our region has many professional developers as well as many graduating students whom who really benefit from a conference. I would like to ask the following questions: What steps or advice would one take if the task was given to set up a local developers conference? What would the costing look like? (excluding building/hosting of website(s)) How would one build interest and promote this? How would I approach, Local Companies & Universities to collaborate with them? • Design Pattern Books, Papers or Resources for Non-Object Orientated Paradigms?

  After viewing this video on InfoQ about functional design patterns I was wondering what resources are out there on design patterns for non-object orientated paradigms. There are plenty out there for the OO world (GOF, etc, etc) and for architecture (EoEAA, etc, etc) but I'm not aware of what's out there for functional, logic, or other programming paradigms. Is there anything? A comment during the video suggests possibly not - does anyone know better? (By the way, by design patterns I don't mean language features or data structures but higher level approaches to designing an application - as discussed in the linked video)

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

  Possible Duplicate: How do I get rid of “U3 System” on my USB drive? SanDisk Cruzer come with a "U3" malware built into them. Its intended for windows, but on Ubuntu it shows up as a "U3 System" CD on the desktop and as /dev/scd1 -> sr1 My question - How do I permanently delete this from the device without windows? I'm aware of the windows program, but I don't have access to any, and in any event, I wouldn't want to insert the stick into a windows box because it automatically installs its malware to any windows box comes into contact with! A friend of mine realized you could delete the cdrom via sudo echo "1" > /sys/class/block/srXXX/device/delete But it will come back if you reboot.

  One of my goals for next year is to participate in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. As far as I'm aware, it is not too different from Informatics Olympiads in other countries. What would be the best way to study for this? What content should I pay particular attention to while learning in Python? I am currently using the book 'Learn Python the hard way', but are there any other books worthy of a mention? • Is imposing the same code format for all developers a good idea?

  We are considering to impose a single standard code format in our project (auto format with save actions in Eclipse). The reason is that currently there is a big difference in the code formats used by several (10) developers which makes it harder for one developer to work on the code of another developer. The same Java file sometimes uses 3 different formats. So I believe the advantage is clear (readability = productivity) but would it be a good idea to impose this? And if not, why? UPDATE We all use Eclipse and everyone is aware of the plan. There already is a code format used by most but it is not enforced since some prefer to stick to their own code format. Because of the above reasons some would prefer to enforce it.

• What can I use to set up a 100% cloud based python IDE + Hosting environment?

  I'm working a side project and I can't always be on "my" machine to code/deploy the web application. I am aware of various cloud IDEs (e.g., Cloud 9 IDE) and independent Django/Flask etc., hosting services (e.g., Heroku). What is the best way to completely shift my development/deployment environment to the cloud so that I can code/deploy from anywhere? I don't mind using paid services but I'm not sure which cloud IDEs play nice with which hosting services. Has anyone tried this setup before? What has or hasn't worked? I want to minimize the manual intervention in 'connecting the two services' as much as possible. I'm going to be using Django, MySQL and Redis for the web-app

• Non-Full-Screen Application Launcher in Gnome 3?

  I'm trying out Gnome Shell in 11.04. You can push the "activities" key to get into the overview where you can launch applications. I like the idea of the overview as an aid in switching focus, but it's too slow for just launching an application. Is Gnome Shell going to implement, or does it have, a way to launch applications (besides the alt-f2 command launcher) that is as quick as Gnome-do? edit: To be clear, I'm aware of several Gnome application launchers. I'm curious about the Gnome Shell and any packages it includes (not add-ons like Gnome-do or Synapse).

I'm aware that there are several CMSes that have this capability, but this particular one was built specifically for that task.   Im creating an iPhone game with Adobe AIR, and I want to be able to load a simple text msg into an dynamic text box on the games front screen from my server (and then be able to update that text file on the server, so it updates automatically in the game after the game is on the app store) How would I go about acheiving that? is it as simple as using a getURL? are there any specifical issues with trying to do this on the iPhone via AIR that I should be aware of?   Possible Duplicate: Which Ecommerce Script Should I Use? We're looking to develop a simple e-commerce solution to sell 5-6 products. We'd rather not have to use PayPal's buttons (buy it now!) if there's an existing alternative, but would also for budget/time constraints don't want to roll our own. Are there any small, basic ecommerce solutions available that would allow this? I did look at Foxy Cart but the monthly fee was a bit of a turn off. (I must sound extremely fussy I'm aware!)   I was wondering what is the general idea about code review and pair programming. I do have my own opinion but I'd like to hear from somebody else as well. Here are a few questions, please give me your opinion even on some of the point First of all are you aware of way to measure the effectiveness of this practices? Do you think that if you pair program, code reviews are not necessary or it's still good to have them both? Do you think anybody can do code review or maybe is better done by seniors only? • Alternative to Firefox's Tab Groups feature for Chromium/Chrome

  Firefox keeps crashing the whole time on my Lubuntu 12.04 since version 12, I don't know why, I am running it on a Pentium IV desktop so might be CPU shortage, however I use the same set of extensions and configurations that I have on Windows' Firefox and it rarely crashes, runs smoothly and besides on Windows it can handle much more tabs opened before some freeze actually happens. Chromium is working better so far on Lubuntu, but I really do miss the Tab Groups Firefox feature, which is great to group tabs and organize them, it really is a boost on my productivity. Are you aware of any add-on which is similar for Chrome/Chromium? I've searched around on Chrome's Web Store but no luck at the moment.

  I want to experiment with the idea of an html based ad that utilizes my company's search API, is anyone here aware of any rules or documentation (general or per network) that explains the guidelines for creating such ads - ie markup, delivery etc - note this is not a question on how to use my company's api, I already know how to do that. For example, I would like to access the api with jsonp, probably via jquery? Can this be done? Would I host the ad and have loaded via an iframe? I just don't know these things.   A couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. • Getting "System program problem detected" pops up regularly after upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

  This started to happen immediately after I had rebooted the first time after doing a system upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10. It first starts with a dialogue that says "System program problem detected". Then when I try to hit 'report problem' not much happens. I am led through a dialogue that always ends up the problem cannot be solved. I am running a MacBook1,1 I am aware this is not a lot of information, however I'm not sure which information I need to publish and how should I obtain it to debug this problem. Here's a screenshot!
