• ADF is YouTubed

  A blog post along the lines of "your wishes are our command". ADF developers are hopefully aware of our ADF Insider Essentials recordings, a page full of presentations from small to large topics on all-things-ADF.  A couple of customers have pointed out these recordings aren't accessible via the iPad and other Apple OSX devices thanks to the recordings being wrapped in an Adobe Flash applet.   As you are aware JSR-236, Concurrency Utilities for the Java EE platform, is now a candidate for addition into Java EE 7. While it is a critical enabling API it is not necessarily obvious why it is so important. This is especially true with existing features like EJB 3 @Asynchronous, Servlet 3 async and JAX-RS 2 async. On his blog DZone MVB Sander Mak does an excellent job of explaining the motivation and importance of JSR-236. • How to manage two video cards on a laptop (ATI and Intel)?

  I have a laptop with two video cards. One ATI and on integrated Intel. On Windows, I can choose which video card I want to use. For example, I use the Intel card for normal use and for gaming, I switch to my ATI card for better performance, but a shorter battery life. In Ubuntu 10.10, only the Intel driver is installed, the ATI driver for my card doesn't work at all and there's heat coming out of my computer all the time, like when I'm playing video games on Windows. I think both cards are active, but only the Intel one is usefull. How can I solve this by making sure Ubuntu is aware of the two video cards and by disabling my ATI. Or may be I am all wrong about this?

• Boot-Repair after messing up NTFS partition

  I posted this question explaining what happened after I tried to create a new swap partition on a Win/Ubuntu dual-boot machine. I have since created a live-boot USB and installed Boot-Repair. I had it "recommend repairs", after which it tried repairing the wubi filesystems, which as far as I'm aware was not necessary. I'm not sure where to go from here; I don't care very much about backing up my files, I just want to be able to boot the machine. In the Advanced Options the "Repair Windows boot files" box is uncheckable both GRUB tabs are unclickable (I do have GRUB installed) Here is my Pastebinit with the details from the Boot-Repair. Please be as explicit as possible, as I am proving to be disproportionately bad at this type of task. Thank you! P.S. • J2ME character animation with multiple sprite sheets

  I'm working on a J2ME game and I want to have walking animations. Each direction of walking has a separate sprite sheet (i.e. one for walking up, one for walking right etc), I also have a static idle image for each direction held together in a single file. I've tried to hold an array of sprites in my player class and then just drawing the sprite corresponding to the current direction, but this doesn't seem to work. I'm aware that if I combine all the animations into one sprite sheet I could set up different animation sequences, but I want to be able to do it with separate images for each animation. Is there a way that anyone knows of to achieve this? And ideally without too much extra code (as opposed to combining the sprites into one sheet)

• How to migrate from Banshee to Rhythmbox?

  As it has been decided, Ubuntu Precise 12.04 will feature Rhythmbox as the default music player. I am aware, that it does not mean that I will not be able to use Banshee, nevertheless I would like to switch to it. I have been a Rhythmbox fan for a long time, but after the switch to Banshee in Natty I decided to give it a try and completely migrated to it. However, I am not very happy with it, it lags for me a lot and has some other issues. I would like to export all Banshee data to Rhythmbox. That includes: Music library Playlists Preferably playcounts and ratings Radio stations Cover pictures What should I do to move all this data to Rhythmbox, get it to work as the default music player, and smoothly switch completely to it?

• MAMP Pro Installed On Mavericks 10.9

  I have MAMP Pro Installed. I'm well aware with the advanced features of MAMP Pro I can change to different types of Hosts, but I wanted to know why my previous method would not work within mavericks. This was my usual working method in 10.8, but now with 10.9 it's a headache. The previous method would: Write a custom address with the host address: "#Virtual Hosts" 127.0.0.1 nameofsite.local go to /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache and open the httpd.conf file, scroll to the bottom and then add NameVirtualHost * DocumentRoot "/Applications/MAMP/htdocs" ServerName localhost DocumentRoot "/Users/Klimt/Sites/siteoffolder" ServerName clientA.local make sure the ports is set to 80, 443, 3306. reset MAMP PRO and then usually type in the url address and it's gold from there. any help?

• Dependency Injection Confusion

  I think I have a decent grasp of what Dependency Inversion principle (DIP) is, my confusion is more around dependency injection. My understanding is the whole point of DI is to decouple parts of an application, to allow changes in one part without effecting another, assuming the interface does not change. For examples sake, we have this public class MyClass(IMyInterface interface) { public MyClass { interface.DoSomething(); } } public interface IMyInterface { void DoSomething(); } How is this var iocContainer = new UnityContainer(); iocContainer.Resolve<MyClass>(); better practice than doing this //if multiple implementations are possible, could use a factory here. IMyInterface interface = new InterfaceImplementation(); var myClass = new MyClass(interface); It may be I am missing a very important point, but I am failing to see what is gained. I am aware that using an IOC container I can easily handle an objects life cycle, which is a +1 but I don't think that is core to what IOC is about.

• Turning off XON/XOFF when SSHing via PuTTY

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 on a rented dedicated server. When I ssh to it using PuTTY (on a Windows machine), I find it responds to Ctrl+S and Ctrl+Q as XON/XOFF transmission control (i.e. the terminal freezes everytime I type Ctrl+S until I type Ctrl + Q). This hasn't been a problem on other remote servers, and I realise I don't really have much idea about how this is determined. Is this something that is negotiated at the start of the terminal session, something that is set by the choice of terminal emulation (TERM=xterm, if that helps) or - as I suspect - some setting on the server I am not aware of. How do I tell Ubuntu that it is 2011, and no-one has terminals that rely on XON/XOFF any more?

• Questions about software licensing

  I've been having a discussion about licensing and open source software. Basically - the other guy is saying that licensing is easy, if you're going to build a product you can use an (any) open source project and make money by selling that code. My issue is that say I create a website or app with a project that uses a GPL license the restrictions aren't so straight forward - correct me if i'm wrong on each of these scenarios: 1 - i create an iPhone app using GPL code and put that app into the appstore - the code must be freely available to people buying that app. 2 - i create a website that my client hosts - they must have access to the code. 3 - i create a website as SaaS that my client "leases" but does not own - though it is hosted on their infrastructure - they must have access to that code Am i right on each of those assumptions? Are there any other issues i should be aware of under any other licensing terms for other licenses?

• What is the next promotion for a scrum master

  I'm currently a scrum master. I have been offered a promotion to a role that will allow me to have a wider impact. (more involved in company wide architectural decisions, possible secondment to kick start major projects, etc). The role and title of the job has yet to be decided but my company are open to guidance from me. I'm happy I can mould the role to suit me and the company but I'm unsure about the job title that fits this role. Technical Evangelist has been suggested but i'm not sure that is the correct title. I'm keen to proceed down the technical route. What would you suggest? What other roles do people take after scrum master/technical lead? EDIT: (I am aware that my current role is a mix of a technical lead and scrum master role, but that's how we do it in my company :) )

• Removing mdadm array and converting to regular disks while preserving data

  I have a 6 disk (2TB each) mdadm RAID 5 volume created in Ubuntu 12.04 Server. However, I'm moving to a different solution and want to "unraid" my disks but keep the data. Only 50% is in use. From what I can surmise I basically have to do this recursively for each physical disk. Fail the disk Format the failed disk Move a portion of files to the new disk. Reshape the array Shrink the logical volume md0 This seems like a very time consuming process. Is there an easier way to do this (automatically perhaps) without buying new disks to temporarily hold the data? I am also aware that during this processing my RAID volume will be degraded and vulnerable the entire time. I am not too concerned about this and will be using battery backup and moving the most important files off first. Thank you for your help!

  Question: Is there an open source license that requires that my name (or a name that I want to promote) will always be associated with a project and derivations of it? (Either within the copyright notice (©) or other.) Motivation: - My main motivation is to gain reputation. If it gained wide use, it could look very good on resume (I understand this is a long shot). - An additional benefit is that it would explicitly state to prospective employers that this code was used by myself before I started with the company and will continue to be used when I leave. It is my understanding: I am aware that 99.9% of open-source projects never take off, and that I am taking a long shot in regard to advancing reputation/career. I understand that many don't read/respect licenses. I understand that open source projects take a lot of time to manage. I understand that 'Concensus-Based Development' is the best chance at motivating a community and that I may/will loose substantial control.

• Mount encrypted volumes from command line?

  If I have an encrypted external disk (or an internal disk that is not in fstab), I see an entry for it in Nautilus -- with an entry like "X GB Encrypted Volume". I can click on this volume, and am prompted for a password to decrypt and mount the device. But how do I do this from the command line? This wiki page, and other docs I can find, only refer to GUI methods of decrypting the device; but this won't do in the context of headless servers or SSH logins. Is there a simple way to get devices to mount to automatic locations in "/media" just like they would with the GUI? (I'm not asking about encrypted home directories -- I'm aware of ecryptfs-mount-private. This question is about additional encrypted volumes.)

• Transition to new site

  I'm almost finished rewriting the website for a non-profit organization. The existing site receives ~5,000 a month. The new site is being written in ASP.Net and the existing site is PHP. The current hosting provider does not support .Net hosting, so I'll be switching providers. My question revolves around the transition from the old site to the new. I would really like to get the new site up at the new hosting provider and do thorough testing before changing the DNS records for the domain. Question: How can I put the new site up, test it, make any changes/additions necessary before updating the domain DNS to point to the new IP without Google indexing the content? Also, what SEO repercussions should I be aware of when making such a drastic change to the content that exists under the domain name?

• New Pluralsight app for Android will bring variable speed

  Usually, it is very interesting to compare the 'same' software applications and apps between various platforms, and the Pluralsight offline players are an outstanding example to have a closer look at. The original Silverlight desktop offline player, the iOS app of Pluralsight and the new HTML5 online player all have variable playback speed. Just the Android app doesn't. But not for long. A couple of days Pluralsight finally announced that their development department found a reliable solution to provide flexible speeds. While there are a number of on-going asteroid search programs, these are all Earth-based at the moment. The limitations of them are:Each telescope can only observe for a maximum average of 12 hours per day.As far as I am aware, all these programs are in the visible light only. (Once an asteroid is found, then radar tracking is possible when it is close.)Being Earth based they cannot see inside the Earth's orbit.The Asteroids being generally dark, do not show up well in visible light.A private group are proposing a radical alternative to this by orbiting an infra-red telescope in the orbit of Venus.   Last year, me and three good old friends of mine founded a small web/mobile development team. Things are going pretty well. We're learning a lot, and new people are joining the group. Keeping knowledge always updated and in-sync is vital for us. Long emails threads are simply not the way to go for us: too dispersing and confusing, and hard to retrieve after a while. How your team manages and organizes common knowledge? How do you collect and share useful resources (articles, links, libraries, etc) inside your team? Update: Thanks for the feedback. More than using a wiki to share team common procedures or informations, I'd like to share external links, articles, code libraries, and be able to comment them easily within my team. I was particularly interested in knowing if you're aware of any way/webservice to share a reading list with a team. I mean, something like Readitlater/Instapaper, but for teams, maybe with some stats available, like "# of coworkers who read it".

• How do I set a system wide proxy?

  I'm trying to set a system wide proxy, and I'm specifically having difficulties with apt-get for installing applications on my Ubuntu. I'm in a university using a proxy server with username/password. I'm aware of setting a proxy with username and password in the following manner: http://username:[email protected]:8080/ But it fails, as a critical example with apt-get. Username contains backslash( \ ) in it and I'm wondering whether that could be a problem for failing. I'd be grateful with any input on this. P.S I'm on Ubuntu 11.04
