  • Laptop choice for development: MacBook Pro 17 vs Dell Studio XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15

    Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life?   • Why does outlook 2013, after initial setup, always fail to connect to an Exchange server/always ask for a password?

    After installing Outlook 2013 configuring it to connect to an exchange server (details about which, e.g., version, etc., I do not know how to provide) was stressful and the user used outlook without issue for a session. The next time outlook is started this error (Re. subject) occurs. The answer to this question solves the issue, or explains why it is happening (i.e., no one could provide a solution). It is only after outlook is closed and re-opened that it will not connect again to the server. Has it also got that ease of use like swapping drives on the go, simply extend capacity by plugging in new drives, notify me of drive errors, disk failure protection, dynamic space of "partitions", better/worse effective capacity, etc. Which is more secure? Am I able to simply replace a bad drive with a new one on unraid? What happens if my pc fails? Lets say the cpu overheats. Since I have a complete pc which is going to be replaced, I only have to pay the software to use unraid. I am going to use my nas for: music library (how well does it integrate with iTunes? ) picture library movie library development (i need to be able to be to use time machine) I am going to use this nas with a MacBook pro. My current disks: 2x 500Gb 1x 1.5Tb 1x 2Tb On a drobo fs I would have 2.26 Tb of space. What would it be on unraid? Is FreeNAS also an alternative?

  • How to preview any files inside a Java application ?

    I'm using a JTree to browse the content of a folder and I want that when a user click on a file, the software shows a preview of it (a screenshot of its first page). The files are mostly Office documents and PDF. I manage to do it for PDF file using a module downloaded from Sun, but I'd like to know if there is a way to do it using any software (JARs preferably) or even the built-in Windows API. I was thinking of converting the file to PDF then do a preview of this PDF but this isn't optimal. Any ideas ?

Also the public IP address will be configured directly on the machine,,, so we will not translate private/public IP addresses. If we use NAT,, we would have to translate the public IP on the WAN to the public IP on the LAN. The only security feature I expect on the gateway is an access list. I don't really know much about networking, so I am sorry if this question is generic.

  • No compatibility tab for Devenv.exe (VS 2010 and VS 2012) on Windows 8

    I've tried checking the "Run as Administrator" on the shortcut, but that doesn't always seem to work, like when I open the solution through the jumplist. I browsed to the devenv.exe file, but when I open the properties for the file the Compatibility tab is not there. It is there for other executables in the same directory. Does anyone know how I can get the tab back so that I can set the Run as Administrator open on the executable?

Now, as I learn, I see it was not the best solution, but it is what I have till I learn more and it is working.   • Informing Googlebot for deprecated pages

    I publish timetables in my website. For example last year I published Number 2 bus Summer 2013 timetable. I has pretty good ranking on Google SERPs for number 2 bus timetable But this year I added a new page with the name "Number 2 bus Summer 2014 timetable". When users search number 2 bus timetable in Google, they find 2013 timetable in first page of SERPs. But I want them to find 2014 timetable. Thy can reach 2014 page with the keywords number 2 bus timetable 2014. But most of the users doesn't write year name. So what's the proper way to say Googlebot that 2013 page is deprecated and newer version is 2014 page ? I created a link from 2013 page to 2013 page and added a deprecation alert for visitors. But I still see 2013 timetable in first page of Google SERPs. Of course it is possible to 301 redirect, 2013 page to 2014 page. But I want users to reach old pages to compare the differences between years. (As you would guess I have many pages like this.) Edit: Why I don't put timetables on same page and show different years' timetables with sorting. Because my old pages has good pagerank scores or SERPs. Removing these old page will remove them.

  • VS 11 Beta merge tool is awesome, except for resovling conflicts

    If you've downloaded the new VS 11 Beta and done any merging, then you've probably seen the new diff and merge tools built into VS 11.  They are awesome, and by far a vast improvement over the ones included in VS 2010.  There is one problem with the merge tool though, and in my opinion it is huge.Basically the problem with the new VS 11 Beta merge tool is that when you are resolving conflicts after performing a merge, you cannot tell what changes were made in each file where the code is conflicting.  Was the conflicting code added, deleted, or modified in the source and target branches?  I don't know (without explicitly opening up the history of both the source and target files), and the merge tool doesn't tell me.  In my opinion this is a huge fail on the part of the designers/developers of the merge tool, as it actually forces me to either spend an extra minute for every conflict to view the source and target file history, or to go back to use the merge tool in VS 2010 to properly assess which changes I should take.I submitted this as a bug to Microsoft, but they say that this is intentional by design. WHAT?! So they purposely crippled their tool in order to make it pretty and keep the look consistent with the new diff tool?  That's like purposely putting a little hole in the bottom of your cup for design reasons to make it look cool.  Sure, the cup looks cool, but I'm not going to use it if it leaks all over the place and doesn't do the job that it is intended for. Bah! but I digress.Because this bug is apparently a feature, they asked me to open up a "feature request" to have the problem fixed. Please go vote up both my bug submission and the feature request so that this tool will actually be useful by the time the final VS 11 product is released.

  • Changelog file: YAML vs JSON vs CSV

    Hello everybody. I am creating a simple Changelog lib in CodeIgniter that will basically log a message everytime someone adds, deletes, changes or publish a blog post. I will log messages in files by batches of 300. So every 301st message will go in a new file. At first I wanted to write the logs to simple .log files but then I got the idea to actually style the thing and I had to seperate each "attribute" of each message (ie: the user, the message, the type of the log, etc.). So .log files are out of the question since extracting the info would be a pain. What is the most appropriate format for such a task? I already ruled out MySQL and XML because they are too heavy (especially considering that the log files won't exceed (about) 300 lines). I suggested YAML vs JSON vs CSV in the title, but is there yet a better alternative?

  • Asynchronous vs Synchronous vs Threading in an iPhone App

    I'm in the design stage for an app which will utilize a REST web service and sort of have a dilemma in as far as using asynchronous vs synchronous vs threading. Here's the scenario. Say you have three options to drill down into, each one having its own REST-based resource. I can either lazily load each one with a synchronous request, but that'll block the UI and prevent the user from hitting a back navigation button while data is retrieved. This case applies almost anywhere except for when your application requires a login screen. I can't see any reason to use synchronous HTTP requests vs asynchronous because of that reason alone. The only time it makes sense is to have a worker thread make your synchronous request, and notify the main thread when the request is done. This will prevent the block. The question then is bench marking your code and seeing which has more overhead, a threaded synchronous request or an asynchronous request. The problem with asynchronous requests is you need to either setup a smart notification or delegate system as you can have multiple requests for multiple resources happening at any given time. The other problem with them is if I have a class, say a singleton which is handling all of my data, I can't use asynchronous requests in a getter method. Meaning the following won't go: - (NSArray *)users { if(users == nil) users = do_async_request // NO GOOD return users; } whereas the following: - (NSArray *)users { if(users == nil) users == do_sync_request // OK. return users; } You also might have priority. What I mean by priority is if you look at Apple's Mail application on the iPhone, you'll notice they first suck down your entire POP/IMAP tree before making a second request to retrieve the first 2 lines (the default) of your message. I suppose my question to you experts is this. When are you using asynchronous, synchronous, threads -- and when are you using either async/sync in a thread? What kind of delegation system do you have setup to know what to do when a async request completes? Are you prioritizing your async requests? There's a gamut of solutions to this all too common problem. It's simple to hack something out. The problem is, I don't want to hack and I want to have something that's simple and easy to maintain.

  • help me pick the right iPhone audio class - MPMoviePlayer vs AVAudioPlayer vs MPMusicPlayer

    Does anyone know of a good tutorial on the distinction between the MPMoviePlayer vs AVAudioPlayer vs MPMusicPlayer? I want to play audio from an mp3 file available at an external URL. Ideally it is played in an iPod-like audio view. I toyed with MPMoviePlayer but it appears to be more suitable for video, as when audio starts a "movie playing" message displays, the controls disappear and a white quicktime splash page displays. I would like the standard ipod audio controls to display all the time, and to customize the image behind them.
